Discover Military Careers
Exploring military opportunities can be a valuable path for graduating high school students The military provides training, benefits, and career advancement, emphasizing education and professional development For example, NC1 Jacquelynn LaScala joined after earning her degrees and utilized educational benefits like the Forever GI Bill and tuition assistance for further education.
Military skills transfer well to civilian careers in diverse fields, including law enforcement, medicine, and culinary arts. LaScala transitioned from law enforcement to recruiting, highlighting the variety of opportunities. SSGT Patrick Blake notes the endless job skills available through military service. Choosing a branch, like SSG PaganEstrada's decision to join the Army, can significantly impact a student's future, often sparked by recruitment encounters
“The military provides training, benefits, and career advancement, emphasizing education and professional development.”
The military lifestyle offers exciting opportunities, with members of the military stationed in diverse locations like Japan or Spain, and access to recreational programs such as the Navy's Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) and the Marine Corps' Single Marine Program. Financial stability is a key benefit, providing guaranteed pay and coverage for housing and medical expenses, which is attractive for students Serving as a recruiter allows for a positive impact on others’ futures
Overall, the military provides high school students with education, career advancement, healthy lifestyles, and financial security, making it a valuable option for life after graduation

The Impact of Big Panthers on Young Learners
By Carolyn Sanchez
In many schools, mentorship programs play a crucial role in supporting students’ growth, and the Big Panther, Little Panther program at Pocono Mountain West High School is a stellar example of this. The advisors are Mrs. Behr, Mrs. McClelland, and Mrs. Nimtien, who guide high school students serving as role models. High school students known as Big Panthers engage with younger kids, referred to as Little Panthers, by providing guidance, support, and a positive influence. During a recent visit on January 22nd to Clear Run Intermediate and Clear Run Elementary, I had the opportunity to witness firsthand how these interactions foster inspiration and personal development.
Talking to several Big Panthers and their Little Panther counterparts revealed striking insights about the mentorship experience Hannah Bossett, a dedicated Big Panther, expressed that her primary motivation for joining the program was to become a positive role model for younger students For the Little Panthers, the experience is equally impactful They admire their Big Panthers and express a strong desire to emulate them Many young students, including Genesis Washington, Josie Cai, Justice Ivy, and Madison Mejia, shared how their Big Panthers inspire them to aim for greatness and to consider taking on leadership roles as they progress in school
The connection between the Big and Little Panthers is palpable Little Panthers appreciate the time spent coloring, helping with homework, and even having lunch together. These moments, filled with laughter and learning, create a safe space where younger students feel supported and encouraged. The ambitious feelings of wanting to be a Big Panther one day resound clearly among the Little Panthers, as they look forward to stepping into similar mentorship roles.
As the day came to an end, heartfelt gratitude flowed from the Little Panthers. They thanked their Big Panthers for being there for them and making them feel secure during their elementary school journey. This sentiment of appreciation is a testament to the impactful nature of the Big Panther program, proving that mentorship can leave a lasting impression on young minds Such memories and lessons shape the immediate school environment and inspire future generations to thrive academically and personally

Theodore Roosevelt
At Pocono Mountain West High School, a project in a few civic classes includes helping the community. This project is known as the Active Citizenship Project or ACP. It’s a great way to help promote students to help their community. There are so many different ways that students choose to fulfill this project. Some decide to help with school events, some help out at soup kitchens, and more! This article serves as a way to highlight some of those amazing projects and hopefully encourage even more students to help their community out!
“She gave back to her community and helped citizens stay warm during the winter!”
Catherine Gesualdi: A True Example of Active Citizenship
Catherine Gesualdi decided to help the community by cutting wood at a religious retreat for those who live and camp on the retreat’s property! She chose this activity since she was curious about how the process would work and wanted to contribute to her community. This was a great way to demonstrate active citizenship, since she gave back to her community and helped citizens stay warm during the winter!

The Senator for a Day seminar is a yearly event by Senator Rosemary Brown at Northampton Community College This event is an excellent opportunity for all students to learn what being a senator is like It has a positive and respectful civic discourse that allows students to share ideas and opinions about law-making Attending the field trip can also lead to fantastic internship opportunities with Senator Brown for seniors.
At Northampton Community College, the Pocono Mountain student group went to a meeting room to learn more about the process of what they’re doing. After the meeting was dismissed, everyone split off into their committees. Following the Health and Human Services Committee, they talked about two bills, Recreational Use of Marijuana and Drug Testing for Welfare Benefits Students split off into two groups, the majority and the minority, before discussions After lunch, the whole committee decided together whether or not to amend, pass, or kill each bill Then, the general session began, and all the committees returned to the meeting room to discuss all the amended and passed bills They were amended, passed, or killed once again.
