2025 Sale Order: Breeds sell in catalogue order Heifers, Charolais, Simmental, Gelbvieh, Hereford, Angus
For information on when individual lots sell, check the sale order posted on DLMS. All Breed Group Consigners will sell 1 bull of their choice in Round 1. In round 2 they will have the opportunity to sell 2 of their bulls, then in round 3 breeders will sell all of their remaining bulls.
CE: Calving Ease BW: Birth Weight WW: Weaning Weight YW: Yearling Weight Milk: Daughters’ Milk MCE: Maternal Calving Ease Canadian Angus EPD’s are updated monthly by the CAA. EPD’s listed in this catalogue are as of February 2025. Please ask consignors directly for updated information.
Example of EPD
Use:
To use EPDs effectively you must understand how they work. Imagine you are interested in purchasing a couple of bulls for your herd. You are looking at the EPDs in a sale catalogue. Bull A has a weaning weight EPD of +10 and Bull B has a weaning weight of +60. What does that mean? How can you use the EPDs to choose between the two bulls? If these animals were randomly mated with 10 similar cows, we would expect the group average weaning weight of Bull A’s offspring to be 50 lbs lighter than that of Bull B’s (60-10=50).

A Brief History of the Vanderhoof All Breeds’ Bull Sale
The Vanderhoof Bull Sale was started in 1976 by Larry Shantz, then owner of the Vanderhoof Auction Mart. For the first three years Mr. Shantz brought Hereford and Angus bulls in from the Wetaskwin, AB area. Around 1978, he was approached by a few BC purebred breeders, and he accepted entries from the Fraser Valley, Vancouver Island and Interior. Entries were well received by ranchers from Quesnel to Smithers, which is still the main market area.
After a few years of successful sales, the BC Angus, Hereford and Simmental Associations requested participation. After some hesitation by Mr. Shantz, a committee was formed to govern the Vanderhoof Bull Sale; Angus, Hereford, Simmental and Shorthorn each had a representative, with Larry Shantz still having the final say. Henry Dyck bought the Vanderhoof Auction Mart in 1994. In 1996, a record 127 bulls of 6 different breeds from 37 consignors came to the sale from Vernon to Queen Charlotte Islands. The popularity of the sale was so great, from 2002 to 2013, the name was changed to the Vanderhoof Invitational Bull Sale to limit the number of entries. In 2006, the Auction Mart was purchased by BC Livestock Co-op. Despite changes in ownership, the Bull Sale has continued on in the same format.
The Committee took over the running of the sale and expanded committee representation to include Charolais and All Other Breeds. The intent of the sale has always been to provide a venue for both consignors and buyers. The Vanderhoof All Breeds’ Bull Sale Committee thanks everyone for their support in achieving this milestone of 50 years.
