President’s Report:
Greetings to fellow Hereford breeders across the province.
It’s an exciting time to be in the beef industry recordhigh cattle prices are opening doors we haven’t seen in years, and the Hereford breed is positioned better than ever to lead the way into a strong future with the “Better Your Beef” strategy.
Herefords have long been known for their unmatched efficiency, docility, feed conversion, and the kind of hybrid vigor that drives profitability in commercial herds. And now, as buyers and feeders demand more consistency, performance, and carcass quality, the Hereford breed is poised to be a leader based on all the work that the membership has done to improve our breed over the past many years.
Across British Columbia and beyond, we’re seeing renewed energy and opportunity. This is our moment to promote what we’ve always known: Hereford genetics work. They work for ranchers, for feeders, and for the beef industry as a whole.
Let’s harness this momentum let’s showcase our genetics, support our breeders, and connect with commercial producers looking for reliable, profitable cattle. Whether it’s at sales, field days, or local events, every conversation is a chance to promote the value of Herefords in today’s marketplace.
Together, we’re building a future where the Hereford breed continues to thrive rooted in tradition, fueled by innovation, and driven by results.

Let’s make this year one to remember.

Our BCJHA members have been busy at the first BC youth show of 2025, planning for Bonanza and getting ready for their next fundraiser.
We had a meeting on April 16th where we discussed our plans for Bonanza 2025. Bonanza is from July 21st to 25th in Olds, Alberta. Entries are now open and close on June 1st. It looks like we will have a great group attending with a few trailer loads of cattle. Copper-T Ranch is having BCJHA t-shirts made for the juniors that are attending Bonanza.
We are going to have an online BCJHA Facebook auction from May 19th to 25th. Right now our members are collecting items for this auction. If you would like to donate any items to the juniors, please contact Delaney or Evan and we can add them to our auction item list. Our plan is to distribute as many items as possible at Cariboo Classic in Williams Lake to save on shipping costs.
Our members are excited about the 2025 Hereford Buckle Award. In 2025, youth up to the age of 22 will be able to accumulate points from a number of BC shows towards winning a BCJHA Hereford Buckle for the Top Hereford Influence Steer and Top Registered Hereford Heifer. Thank you to Richardson Ranch for sponsoring our 1st Hereford Influence Steer buckle and thank you to Kootenay Polled Herefords for sponsoring our 1st Registered Hereford Heifer buckle!
The first show that is eligible for this award was at the beginning of April, Prospect 2000 in Kamloops, BC. It was so nice to see many Hereford and Hereford Influence cattle in the barn! We are asking any youth that showed a Registered Hereford Heifer or Hereford Influence Steer at Prospect 2000, to please send Kari Lynn a copy of your registration paper for the heifer or a photo of your steer, RFID number and your class placing to accumulate points for the year.
The next youth show that many of our juniors will be attending is Cariboo Classic in Williams Lake on May 31 to June 2nd. We are planning to host an inperson BCJHA meeting so we can all visit inperson. We have challenged each of our members to introduce themselves to another youth at Cariboo Classic that is showing Hereford or Hereford Influence animal. They are going to chat with them and ask if they have heard about BCJHA, Bonanza and the Hereford Buckle Award!
Our B.C. Hereford breeders will be hearing from Evan or Delaney within the next couple weeks regarding the CJHA heifer lottery and calendar project. If you are a new breeder or haven’t participated in these programs before and you are interested in having an ad in the 2026 CJHA calendar or being a breeder in the CJHA Heifer Lottery program, please reach out to Delaney or Evan for more information. For all the breeders that contribute to these two programs, we sincerely appreciate your support of the CJHA!

In Memory: Alan Syme
The BC Hereford wishes to announce the passing of former BCHA President, Alan Syme of Kamloops on February 12, 2025. At one time the Syme family had a herd of 450 cows with 100 yearlings in Clinton. Alan was elected as a director of the BCHA the late ‘70s and subsequently served as the President in 1981. He became the BC director to the Canadian Hereford Association in 1983, a position he held until 1990. As in BC, Alan was well accepted by the CHA Board members from across Canada and served as the CHA President for 1984 and 1985. Alan and Marge Syme were recognized with a CHA Honour Roll award in 1995. Alan was also very active in the BC Livestock Cooperative. He was on their Board for 16 years, from 1986 until 2002, serving as the President in 1992. Provided by Member Hugh Fallis

CHA Report
April, 2025
Thespring cattlesaleswereexceptional with astrong sense of optimism for the future of the Canadian cattle industry. The uncertainty around global trade did create a few bumps in the road and we will need to be vigilant in our approach to international markets. Currently, our CUSMA agreement with the USA is in effect, and we are not seeing any tariffs on genetics, live cattle, or beef trade between countries, but that can change with little or no notice. The CHA will continue to work collaboratively with international and Canadian stakeholders to ensure our genetics have markets available and our members are able to capitalize on those opportunities.
AsofJanuary1,2025therewereseveral changesthat took effect regarding our genetic services. Neogen will store submitted DNA (hair/ TSU) for one year and then return those samples to the CHA who will continue to store them for a limited time. Hair samples submitted after January 1, 2025 will be stored for a total of five years, before being discarded.Samplessubmittedbeforethatdate willbe subject to different policy and stored for a longer period, approximately 10 years, as in many cases there was not an opportunity to collect DNA on those animals. The CHA will store the Allflex or other TSU brand samples for a total of two years from the date of submission, due to required cost and infrastructure of required freezers. Retrieval of samples stored at the CHA office will be assessed a fee of $20 per sample, which covers postage and other associated costs in sending them back to Neogen. Currently, samples still located at Neogen are not subject to retrieval costs, but which is subject to change. Samples submitted in hair format will be assessed an additional $5.00 charge by Neogen, which will be applied to your CHA account. Allflex TSU’s can be purchased direct from the Neogen website in packs of 10 or 100.
We are encouraging breeders to maintain an on-farm storagesystemforanimalDNA.Hairsamplesshould be stored in a paper envelope and clearly labelled with relevant animal identification information, in a dry cool space. There are additional benefits to storing on-farm as we have been able to resolve
multiple parentage issues in cases where breeders had hair stored on-farm. We are recommending sending the TSU to Neogen and storing a hair sample on-farm. To avoid the additional fee for submitting DNA in hair format to Neogen, we are recommending that DNA samples are submitted using the Allflex TSU which will avoid this fee and be placed in the ‘fast lane’ at Neogen. The cost of the hair charge is more than the cost of a TSU. More information will be available on the CHA website as it comes available or by contacting any of the CHA Member Service Team.
The teams have been selected for the Youth Competition at the World Hereford Conference in the USA this fall. The competitors underwent three rounds of selections including submitting a resume, multi-media presentation, and an interview. In total 10 judges, who are leaders in Canadian Agriculture, were challenged to select the best of the best that will represent Canada this fall. We anticipate a large delegation of Canadian producers who will be cheering on our youth and taking advantage of networking opportunities with Hereford breeders from around the world. We want to thank sponsors, buyers, and those who contributed to make the National Select fundraiser sale at Agribition a success.Proceedsfromthatsalewillgoto supporting our youth at the WHC. More information is available on the American Hereford Website regarding the event.
The CHA will be launching Hereford X, the new onfarm herd management program later this year. I recognize I have been promising it and the new registry system for a while, but it is a large project, and we are getting close to launch. Pricing and features are available on the CHA website, but feel free to call the office for more information or to get signed up. This is the first phase of a revamped registry and data collection process for the CHA as we move the Hereford breed forward by providing new digital tools for breeders as a critical component of the Better Your Beef Strategy. This year Bonanza will be held in Olds AB from July 21-25, 2025. The CHA will be holding their Annual GeneralMeeting theeveningofJuly 24and welcome all our members to attend. There will be updates on new Hereford initiatives and a status report on the Better Your Beef Strategy.

50th Vanderhoof All Breeds’ Bull Sale
BC Livestock Co-op & DLMS
April 12, 2025
The sun shone but the wind blew which meant the weather was cool for the 50th Annual All Breeds’ Bull Sale. The stands were packed as more people attended the sale than has been seen since before Co-vid. There were only three Herefords at the sale this year. Averages were up for most breeds. In celebration of the sale being the 50th, a BBQ was held on the Friday and buyers were entered in draws for rebates for each breed. Congratulations to Marla Williams, Horsefly, who received the rebate for the Hereford draw.
