LIDL to open second store in town

GERMAN discount retailer Lidl is set to open a second store in Letterkenny – resulting in even more competition between supermarkets in the town.

Work on a new €2 million store has begun on a site opposite the Rossview Business Park on the Port Road, less than 100 metres from the Polestar Roundabout on the town side.

The new single storey store building – with an off-licence – will have a retail sales area of 1,271 sq metres, with 116 car parking spaces.

According to documentation supplied with the planning application - a copy of which has been seen by the Letterkenny Post - the new store will “provide 15-20 direct full time jobs (generating up to €721,000 per annum locally in wages) in addition to further jobs created or supported indirectly and other construction stage employment.”

The detailed proposals suggest that the annual turnover of the new store will be in excess of €10 million.

This latest development is seen by business observers as another vote of confidence in the long-term future of the town.

Letterkenny already has two Dunnes Stores, two Aldi premises, one Tesco, two Centra’s, one Eurospar, discount stores like Happy Days and Dealz and a number of smaller convenience stores.

Letterkenny native Gabriel Flood recalls how some Hallowe’en traditions are disappearing

The changing face of Hallowe’en THE Hallowe’en season has arrived again and one cannot help but notice how the ancient traditions are slowly disappearing while being replaced with a more American culture of expensive costumes, discos, dining out and large legal fireworks displays.

In the decades before the urban sprawl in Letterkenny and in other parts of Donegal children would be seen gathering firewood tyres etc from early October to build their bonfire that was the highlight of this festive season.

Unaware to us as we went about this very busy task was that we were carrying on a tradition handed down from the ancient Celts who would light large fires to mark the end of the harvest time and the beginning of winter.

With the arrival of Christianity to Ireland this Celtic Pagan festival influenced a new season called Hallows’ Eve for remembering the dead that included saints, martyrs and the faithful departed.

As children growing up in different areas of the town and surrounding areas our main focus was on who would have the biggest bonfire on the night.

A round the clock watch was kept in each area to prevent the theft of the bonfire material by rivals from other estates.

We lived in Ard Colmcille/Iona Road so our two biggest rival gangs were the boys and girls from Ard O’Donnell and those from Glencar.

The Ard O’Donnell kids were known throughout the town as the Burmah Apaches and they were very good at carrying out undercover raids just like the real Indians in the films.

Around this time of year the Mummers would visit the estates calling on the houses and putting on their short plays which included reciting verses.

Top carried out this tradition that dates back in Ireland to the 16th century.

Hallowe’en would be celebrated in the houses with games like ducking for apples in the basin of water along with the telling of ghost stories while barmbrack apple-tart and sweets would be served out.

The occasional firework was an addition but beyond doubt the lighting of the bonfire was the highlight of the night and from a good vantage point you could see the many bonfires ablaze around the town and the neighbouring townlands glowing in the night air .Sadly to say sights like this are no more as we live in a new time of environmental awareness and focus on health and safety, The traditions of the past have been replaced with a more modern way of celebrating Hallowe’en

which I am not that sure is entirely for the better as it can involve more expense and the culture of underage and over drinking.

For us who grew up in the simpler Hallowe’en time the memories are still fresh and the stories we share in common help keep alive the friendship and sense of community in a much changed town.

NEWS New €12m school nears completion

“It’s wonderful!

LETTERKENNY’S new Colaiste Ailigh Irish language secondary school is set to open next month.

Last week staff got their first real glimpse of the new building which is nearing completion.

And they were absolutely bowled over by what they saw.

“It’s really emotional,” commented art teacher Ann Marie Ní Chanainn.

The original school opened back in September 2000 in an old

house beside the Orchard Inn on the High Road. Numbers have grown but the facilities have been largely inadequate.

By contrast, the staff and pupils are now preparing themselves to move into a striking modern, maginifcently equipped new school with great facilities.

The new school has been designed to accommodate 350 pupils. The currrent enrolment is 235 – so there is plenty fo scope for growth.

Colaiste Ailigh is set to be the envy of all other schools in the county.

NEWS Survey finds significant deposits

Going for gold in Donegal

By Chris Ashmore and Laura Glenn DONEGAL could be facing a “gold rush” from prospectors following a major survey that has revealed that there are concentrations of the valuable metal in several parts of the county.

The areas seen with the greatest potential include Termon, Glencolumbcille and several parts of Inishowen, notably near Carndonagh.

The extensive Tellus Border Project, which involved the collection of scientific data on soils, waters and rocks across the border counties, identified anomalous gold concentrations in stream sediments in areas previously unknown to contain them.

Minister for Natural Resources, Mr Fergus O’Dowd TD, said the results of the cross-border initiative “will assist mineral exploration in the border county region.”

As previously revealed in the Post, a number of companies already hold prospecting licences to look for a variety of precious metals.

The new occurrences are

expected to boost the Irish economy, after a previous gold map for Northern Ireland led to a significant increase in mineral exploration licences.

Mr. O’Dowd added: “Since preliminary data from the Tellus Border project was released in February 2013, the border region of Ireland has seen an increase in prospecting licence applications, with a committed spend of up to €1m over a six year period in the Irish economy if the applications are successful.

“The gold map, along with other maps released today, will add to that economic investment already beginning in the Border area.”

However, before people get carried away with thoughts of a gold rush, it is worth pointing out that significant indicators do not always lead to commercially viable discoveries.

Indeed, in Inishowen, there were high hopes back in 2002 that a major diamond discovery was on the way.

Shares in British mineral exploration company Cambridge Resources Limited soared by 60% at one stage – but no actual mining ever

began.

The Tellus project, which involved a land-based geochemical survey and an airborne geophysical survey, collected new information about the natural resources of the border region – namely counties Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Cavan, Monaghan and Louth.

Managed jointly by the Geological Survey of Ireland and the Geological Survey of Northern Ireland, Tellus Border is ‘one of the most significant mapping projects ever to take place in Ireland’ and, in conjunction with its forerunner, Tellus, covering Northern Ireland, makes the region one of the most surveyed on the planet.

Along with the results from the two surveys, findings from 13 applied research projects were revealed, indicating new and innovative uses for the data in environmental management, mineral exploration and agricultural productivity.

The survey also contributed to the accuracy of maps showing areas with naturally high levels of radon. Working in conjunction with the Radio-

“Young Scientists” numbers up

A record number of entries were received for the BT Young Science and Technology Exhibition. Students from Donegal have entered 88 projects in the competition that is now in its 50th year.

The event aims to engage young people in science, technology, engineering, maths, innovation and commercialisation. It has grown to become Ireland’s biggest science event, attracting thousands of visitors and giving a platform to the country’s most innovative students.

A bursary has been set up to help participating schools.

The exhibition now includes a commercialisation boot camp and organisers promise a packed programme of events and activities for those attending.

The BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition takes place in Dublin in January 2014.

Donegal Assoc Martin McGettigan has been re-elected as President of the Donegal Association in Dublin following its agm last week.

THE 28th Annual Cleaner Community Campaign Awards will be staged in the Mount Errigal Hotel in Letterkenny next Monday at 7.00 pm with Junior Minister Deputy Dinny McGinley being the guest of honour.

Letterkenny has performed extremely well in the National Tidy Towns Competition in recent years, and the contribution made by local residents’ associations is signficant.

Towns Committee believes that the regular meeting of volunteers this year had a big impact on the town’s improved marks.

Indeed, the volunteers who went out around the town to do dedicated clean-ups not only enjoyed the evenings and their contribution to civic pride, but there was also a social side to it as well.

One area where the adjudicator suggested improvements can be made is the appearance of the recycling bottle and clothing

centres, some of which were not being maintained as well as they should be.

Letterkenny was awarded 313 marks out of 400 in the National Tidy Towns Competiton in 2013, just three behind the overall winner, Moynalty in Co. Meath.

Letterkenny again won the county award, a gold medal, regional award and it also won a National Tourism Town Award.

Numerous local groups will receive their prizes at the function.

rent Chairman of the BritishIrish Parliamentary body.

The Collins 22 Society was launched by members of Fine Gael in Ballingarry, Co. Tipperary in 2002 and was launched nationally in 2005.

The aims of the society include: to perpetuate the name of Michael Collins; to actively campaign for the erection by the State of his statue in the courtyard of Leinster House by 2022 (the centenary of his death); to be non-denominational and non-sectarian;

to extend the influence of Michael Collins by promoting an interest in his life, his work, his writings, and in the ethos he bequeathed to the Irish people, primarily among the youth of Ireland.

Tickets for the event can be purchased for €10 or you can pay at the door on the night.

Any profit will be used for the upkeep of Michael Collins’ grave in Glasnevin cemetery; the society put fresh flowers on the grave each Saturday morning.

“Unfortunately autism is becoming increasingly common and if we can do something, however small, to help children with autism and their families then it is our privilege,” louise added.

Powering Kindness Week

NOVEMBER will see the return of Electric Ireland Powering Kindness Week where simple acts of kindness will be transformed to much needed funds for three Irish charities, Special Olympics Ireland, Childline and Breakthrough Cancer Research.

During Powering Kindness Week (November 2nd – 8th), the public are being asked to do a good deed or an act of kindness and Electric Ireland will transform the good deeds into a donation for the three charities that are part of the campaign.

At the end of the week, the charity with the greatest number of good deeds done in their name will receive a donation from Electric Ireland for €50,000 with €30,000 and €20,000 for the other two charities.

Powering Kindness will start on Saturday November 2nd 2013 with the final on the evening of Friday November 8th 2013.

THE strategy to set a minimum price for alcohol must also apply across the border, according to Donegal North-East TD Charlie McConalogue (FF).

“We need an all-island approach to clamping down on the easy availability of cheap alcohol. Setting a minimum price on this side of the border alone will only drive consumers across the border to buy cheaper alcohol. Border counties like Donegal will suffer as a result and it will put major pressure on our local retailers,” he said.

Lose weight, be healthier – and wealthier too!

WHEN it comes to debating the merits of health versus wealth, few would dispute that good health is priceless – after all, what’s the use in building up your bank account if your health is in decline.

In those terms, every euro spent on achieving healthy, long-term sustainable weight is money well spent, especially when you consider that excess weight and obesity is at the root of many serious illnesses and conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, breathlessness, high blood pressure, increased risk of stroke and some forms of cancer.

Add to that the healthier lifestyle, increased confidence and happier outlook that so many people experience after they shed those stones, and it’s clear that a proven weight loss programme is one of the best investments you can make.

The good news is that at a time when we are all looking

for ways to cut the cost of everyday living, there are huge savings to be made as a result of losing weight that will ultimately repay your weight loss investment many times over. That’s because being overweight or obese doesn’t just carry a cost in terms of your health, self-esteem and well-being, it costs money too – lots of it.

newsbriefs Letterkenny Loreto students’ Garda on trial magnificent achievements The trial began in Letterkenny this week of a garda accused of sexually assaulting two female gardai at a garda station in the county.

The accused, who cannot be named in order to protest the identity of the two victims, is alleged to have assaulted the two females on seven dates over a period between November 2010 and May 2011.

Renowned string quartet to visit Letterkenny ■ The quartet is comprised of Rupert Thompson, violoncello, Elise Kuder and Colleen Jennings, violins, and Michael Kelley, viola.

THE internationally renowned Apple Hill String Quartet from New Hampshire is returning to Donegal for its 14th annual chamber music workshop and concerts.

The renowned quartet will also perform two concerts, in the Great Hall at the University of Ulster Magee Campus (today) Thursday, and in Conwal Parish Church, Letterkenny on Saturday, November 2nd at 7pm.

The concert programme is: Hayden string quartet Opus 74 no. 3 The Rider; three pieces for fiddle and string

quartet arr Dana Lynn, guest fiddle Meadbh Kinsella; Verdi String Quartet in E minor.

The Apple Hill String Quartet has earned accolades from around the world for their interpretive mastery of Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, Schumann, Beethoven, and Ravel. But the musicians are also dedicated to performing seldom-heard masterworks and contemporary music.

Education is an integral part of the quartet’s mission and they conduct miniresidencies in embassies,

communities, schools and universities around the world.

Local organiser Martin Meehan said: “The student performance concert at conclusion of this workshop is indicative of the professional coaching the students have received over the weekend the enjoyment is audible!”

Carer of the Year Announced GINA Grant (pictured) has been announced as Donegal’s Carer of the Year 2013. Gina is the mother of six children, two of whom have special needs.

The annual awards recognise the dedication and enormous contribution of over 7,000 family carers throughout Donegal.

She provides the highest level of care possible to Christopher (6) who has Downs Syndrome and Francis (4) has a rare mitochondrial progressive disease. Gina will be presented with her award at a special ceremony that will take place on today in the Clanree Hotel, Letterkenny.

The Carers of the Year Awards and Young Carer of the Year Award 2013, sponsored by Tunstall Emergency Response, celebrates the contribution of family carers across Ireland.

Gina Grant will now attend a special ceremony which will be held in Dublin on November 5th honouring award recipients from across the country. One family carer will be chosen as Ireland’s Carer of the Year 2013 and the Young Carer of the Year 2013 will also be presented.

The awards ceremony will be hosted by broadcasters and patrons of The Carers Association Mary Kennedy and Marty Whelan.

Get Your Hearing Aid Checked THE sound of a home security alarm being triggered is unmistakable. The loud noise from the alarm system is designed to warn those in the home while also alerting nearby neighbours that there is an intruder, fire, or some other emergency.

But what about those who can’t hear or can’t hear well enough to get this audible warning?

This month Hearing Aid Audiologist Pádraig MacGinty from North West Hearing Clinic is calling on those with a hearing aid to get it checked and is offering free MOT’s for hearing aid users along with free hearing tests for those concerned about hearing loss.

Hearing impairment, one of the most common and ignored health problems affects 17% of the population. The symptoms of hearing impairment vary among individuals and it is also dependent on the cause. Some people experience sudden, profound loss of hearing, perhaps because of a viral infection or an injury to their head or ears. Others experience a gradual decrease in their hearing over a long pe-

riod of time.

“Minding the health of your hearing is as important as visiting your GP for a regular health check or visiting your dentist. With the advancement of technologies it is a problem that can be very easily treated, however it is a problem often left unattended,” says Pádraig MacGinty.

“I am very well aware of how many people are living with a hearing impairment but who are reluctant to get it checked out. I have treated people who have put up with second rate hearing for many years before coming to me and discovering how a simple test and advice on hearing aid products can change their lives.”

Throughout the month of November North West Hearing Clinic intends to raise awareness of this increasing problem and help people identify, understand and deal with the difficulties of hearing loss.

“We all know that preventative check-ups are key to avoiding illness and in our case hearing impairment. Throughout November I will encourage everyone, young and old, concerned about their hearing

health, to make the move and avail of a free hearing test and assessment. We will also be conducting reviews of hearing aids,” says Pádraig.

The Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) is a Voluntary Organisation which has been working with and on behalf of people with physical disabilities for the last 52 years. Formed in 1960 by a group of wheelchair users has gone from strength to strength with services in all areas of the country.

Local Resource Centres in County Donegal In Donegal there are six Resource and Outreach centres in the following areas, Manorcunningham, Malin, Dobhar, Donegal town, Killybegs, and Carrigart. People with disabilities attending the Centres can avail of a wide range of activities which are jointly planned with the individual coming into the service. Individual supports as well as an engaging group setting are provided within people’s own community setting. The Resource Centres are open to people with a physical and/or sensory disability and for many it is an enjoyable day out with an opportunity to meet with others in similar situations and with the support of trained staff if required. It is important to note that all services are open to all with a physical and/or sensory disability and not only those who are wheelchair users.

It is essential to note that with the ever increasing cuts in home support hours this is one way in which individuals can avail of additional supports outside of the home environment and allow the Carer to avail of the respite that this time away affords them.

Personal Assistant Services - Another key service in Donegal is the Assisted Living Services. Within this service IWA provides individuals with personal assistant to support them in their daily lives. The Assisted Living Service is delivered by highly trained staff throughout County Donegal.

School of Motoring - IWA offers a wide range of Motoring services that support people in gaining increased independence and mobility. In Donegal, IWA have a dedicated driving school car and our experienced professional driving instructors provide tuition to drivers with a diverse range of conditions and or disabilities. The service is aimed at people who wish to learn to drive and people who are returning to drive.

Volunteering with IWA - IWA is a registered charity and is always looking for volunteers to assist the local services. Volunteers are involved in fundraising, which is vital to bridge the shortfall in funding necessary to maintain vital service for people with disabilities in Donegal.In the past 5 years we have received 5 reductions in our budgets , however to date we have managed by our own fundraising efforts and prudent management to maintain our services, this once again is our aim in 2013-2014.

Other volunteers are giving their time to help and support our local services and work with people with disabilities and assist our work in the Centres across Donegal. Volunteers often bring their own skills and talents to the service and share their knowledge, such as painting, story-telling, music, sports, etc., with the IWA Service Users.

Fundraising Initiatives - As IWA is part funded by the hSe the remainder must be found by fundraising, which has become increasingly challenging in recent years. Nationally we have the Church Gate collections, Angel Campaign (November) ,as well as individuals taking part in the Flora Womens Marathon and the Marathon at October Bank holiday. Locally fundraising takes many forms from donations, cake sales, tea parties, karaoke, sponsored walks, quizzes, raffles, etc. Our annual Angel Campaign gets under way 1st November and this year more than ever there is the need to maximise donations in order to assist us maintain our vital services in Donegal.

The Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers’ Association (ICSA) president Gabriel Gilmartin said withdrawal of banking services by ACC was cause for alarm.

“This is bad news for farmers and business, especially progressive enterprises that are expanding and increasing exports,” said Mr Gilmartin. “We are already seeing the impact on business of less competition where loans are harder to get and fees and interest margins are creeping up.

“The Government needs to urgently examine what can be done to ensure sufficient competition in banking and how to expand credit to export-oriented businesses such as farming. The news is a worrying development and it will be a big concern to businesses and farmers who will now need to deal elsewhere.”

Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney must deliver strong national co-financing for the Pillar II Rural Development Plan which will be a vital support to low income farmers’ future investment in farming and the agricultural industry as well as the rural economy.

Mr Bryan said schemes such as the Agrienvironment Programme, Disadvantaged Areas and Young Farmer measures, as well as investment aid for achieving Food Harvest 2020 targets are of critical importance to ensure that agriculture continues to play a key role in Ireland’s economic recovery.

Farmers face a tough 2014 – Ó Domhnaill

FIANNA Fáil Seanad Spokesperson on Agriculture Brian Ó Domhnaill said Donegal farmers will be badly hit by the €70 million cut in funding for Irish agriculture next year.

The Donegal Senator said the €37 million cut in the REPs and AEOS, along with a cut of at least €32 million in Single Farm Payments, effectively means €70 million is being taken from Irish farmers in 2014.

Senator Ó Domhnaill has also criticised the government’s failure to reverse previous cuts to the Farm Assist in next year’s budget.

“Unfortunately yet again, farmers in Donegal will see more money taken from their pockets next year.

In addition to the cuts in Single Farm Payments, which the Taoiseach agreed with Europe, the do-

mestic budget for farming has also been cut. And it once again it will have a disproportionate effect on farmers in Donegal,” said Senator Ó Domhnaill.

“Effectively, €70 million is being taken from Irish farmers next year.

This includes cuts to REPs, AEOS and the Single Farm Payment. On top of that, Fine Gael and Labour have failed to reverse cuts to the Farm Assist Scheme, which is a major support for farmers in Donegal and across the North West. 1,554 farmers in Donegal alone depend on this scheme to survive and previous cuts to payments have added to the financial pressure on many of these farmers.

“The only relief provided to some farmers in this Budget is the news

that following pressure from farming organisations and opposition parties, the government has finally agreed to a new genomics scheme for suckler cows, which will benefit Donegal farmers with suckler herds.

This new scheme will be the equivalent to an average payment of €287 per farmer per annum.

“I am now calling on Minister Simon Coveney to ensure that every support is given to these farmers so that they can avail of the new scheme. Having spoken to a number of Donegal farmers in recent days, many have no experience dealing with genomics and will need help to get started. The Minister must guarantee that they are supported in availing of the new scheme.”

Opposition to planned pay and file date changes IFA President John Bryan has made clear the IFA’s position to proposed changes to the current pay and file date.

“With future budgets scheduled for the earlier date of mid-October, the IFA are clear that the retention of the existing ‘pay and file’ date of October 31 for self-employed Income Tax is critical for the farming sector.

“As farmers we receive the majority of our Direct Payments and a significant portion of our income stream during the month of October”.

He said: “Bringing forward the

date of payment would cause serious cashflow difficulties for farmers and businesses depending on payments.

“Ultimately, it would put at risk farmers capacity to comply with tax regulation,” he said.

The Department of Finance has begun a process of consultation requesting submissions from relevant stakeholders in relation to “changes required to the Pay and File dates”, which will be reflected in the final Finance Bill. The consultation sets out three options in relation to self-assessed income tax:

• Moving the Pay and File date to June 30; • Move the Pay and File date to September; • Move the Pay and File date to September but introduce an arrangement to allow taxpayers to mandate from State payments such as the Single Farm Payment.

IFA Farm Business Chairman, Tom Doyle said: “None of the three proposals is workable for farmers.

“While future budgets are scheduled for October, the ‘pay and file’ date of October 31 for selfemployed Income Tax, and the

Paul: Worst of Sinners, Greatest of Apostles n Fred Barry, CEO of the National Roads Authority (NRA)

Border road projects THe Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement has heard that, despite the very limited funding currently available for road development, the improvement to key cross border routes remains a priority.

Fred Barry, CeO of the National Roads Authority (NRA) was addressing the Committee and said that the Authority has to ‘cut its cloth to measure’ a reduction in funding.

Committee Chairman Joe McHugh TD (FG) said: “Committee Members widely commended the NRA for its work in delivering a series of inter-urban motorway routes over the past decade. However, it was pointed out that the missing piece of the jigsaw remains the routes to the Northwest, which has led to an entire geographical section of the island being left behind.”

Deputy McHugh added that the committee took on board Mr Barry’s assertion that planning for roads under the NRA’s remit, such as the Lifford to Letterkenny section, will be sufficiently advanced so as not to provide any obstacles to development once the A5 project proceeds. “

He shaped Western civilisation more than we realise. Walking thousands of miles, he was responsible for the spread of Christianity out of the Middle east and into europe. He brought Christianity from its Jewish roots to us Gentiles. His writings were responsible for the reshaping of Europe fifteen centuries after his death.

Is it any wonder that one historian commenting on a Roman emperor’s condemnation of him said “that the day was to come when men would call their dogs Nero and their sons Paul”.

Paul is one of the most fascinating characters in the Bible. And this Sunday we will be starting looking at his life story. Let me invite you to come along to hear about this enthralling man. I want to whet your appetite: Do you doubt the truth of Christianity? Paul did too—yet his transformation from persecutor of Christians into preacher of Christ was because he was convinced against the odds of the truth of the resurrection of Jesus. Not only that, but Paul’s letters and the book of Acts, taking up a massive proportion of the New Testament ring true when tested against the historical record at every turn.

Do you want to know if there

is life after death? Paul is your answer. He believed Jesus was a fraud, until he met him alive after his crucifixion. This was no wishful thinking on his part, but the very thing he didn’t want to accept. Yet the appearance of Jesus to him changed everything.

Do you think you are too bad to be forgiven? Paul could have thought that too. After all he had a bloody history, one of torture, violence and murder against Christians. He had left a trail of

bloody destruction and grieving widows and orphans in his wake.

He describes himself as ‘less than the least of the apostles’ and ‘the worst of sinners’—not in exaggerated self-recrimination, but honest self-appraisal. Yet he says, “I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life.”

Are you hoping to go to Heaven

because of how good you are?

Paul would have thought that too—even given his persecution of Christians. He was the most devoutly religious man in his generation. He described himself as ‘blameless with regard to God’s law’. even his persecutions were done out of love for God. Yet he came to see that his own efforts were ‘dung’ and that salvation wasn’t by anything he could do, but by Jesus alone.

Do you think Christianity is for the foolish and naïve? Let me invite you to come and meet Paul, a towering intellect of the ancient world. This was no simple Galilean peasant, as some of the disciples were, but a man versed in Greek writers and philosophers, able to quote them at ease and critique the belief systems of the religious and non-religious of his day.

I’m excited about learning more about this giant of a man, and all the more because he was excited about Jesus. He had been ranked number seven by the Amateur International Boxing Association.

But the new rankings will show that he is now the number one.

Quigley confirmed the news on his own facebook page Go Jason Quigley.

Donegal boxers face Mayo On Sunday week, November 9th, the Donegal county boxing team will travel to The Dalton Hotel in Claremorris, Co. Mayo to take on the cream of Connacht boxers and county coach and match-maker John Elliot has pencilled in 12 star-studded contests in weights ranging from 52kgs to 91 kgs plus.

When they counties last met in Ballina in 2005, the westerners recorded an eight bouts to six bouts victory.

In the schoolboys division, Convoy’s rising young starlet Ryan Ward Mulrine will make his first appearance in a Donegal vest when he comes up against Jake Shaughnessy.

Mulrine’s stable-mate and National College’s Champion Lee Boyd faces a very stern task when he faces Westport’s seasoned Danny Coughlan at 60 kgs.

At 70kgs, Letterkenny’s National Cadet and European representative Brian Elliot will have it all to do as he is paired with the current national champion Phelim Halligan. Letterkenny brothers Michael McConigley (91 kgs) and Paddy (66kgs) will both face highly rated opponents in James Kelly and Dean McDonagh respectively.

Raphoe duo, Stephen Stokes, former national champion (91 kgs+) and the explosive Eugene McCauley (71 kgs) along with Carrigart journeyman Noel McCarron (85 kgs) and his clubmate Keelan Shields (57kgs) will also make the Donegal line-up.

Convoy’s double national champion Bryan MCNamee will lock horns with Mayo’s hottest property, three times national schoolboy champion, Martin Collins, of St. Anne’s, Westport, and will hope to make if five wins from five this season.

World boxing silver medal winner Jason Quigley is the toast of donegal this week following his record breaking performances at the World Boxing Championships in Kazakhstan.

The modest 22-year-old received a hero’s welcome on Monday night when he return home to the Twin Towns for a reception at the Finn Valley AC Centre at Millbrae, Stranorlar.

Not withstanding his excellent performances on the way to the world final, he is now the first Irishman ever to go better than bronze at the World Championships and is being tipped for gold at the olympics in Brazil in 2016. This was also the first defeat in 33 fights for Finn Valley ABC man.

Jason picked up the European title earlier this year and has now added World silver to his collection. He was also awarded a Sky Sports Scholarship earlier in the year.

Donegal Open Boxing Championships The Donegal Open Championships will be

staged by the Donegal Co. Boxing Board this Sunday, November 3rd in the Buncrana Youth Club premises.

The second championships of the new season, the event will be open to boxers from Donegal, Derry, Tyrone, Leitrim and Sligo.

If last year’s championships were anything to go by, it will be a feast of amateur boxing. On that occasion there was an entry of 162 boxers, 148 males and 14 females, with 38 contests on the day and 22 during the week.

The weigh-in will be from 9.30 am – 11.00 am with the draw at 12 noon and boxing from 1.00 pm. Boxing will continue during the week at the venue if required.

Southpaw Alimkhanuly proved an elusive character and got through for a few scores of his own to take the round and leave Jason heading into the biggest final round of his career to date.

There was no backing down as the Ballybofey boxer went head-to-head with the Kazakh for three punishing minutes.

He got the decision from one of the judges in the final round, but it was Alimkhanuly who took the prize to go top of the podium.

It’s still worth noting for the record that while Jason was slugging it out with semi-fibnal opponent Chebotarev from Hungary, Alimkhanuly had the day off after his opponent,

Englishman Antony Fowler, withdrew because of a hand injury. last Monday night’s homecoming was a very special affair and although not the first time he’s been welcomed as a champion at the Finn Valley venue, it was certainly an emotional affair.

All week the dynamic fighter captured local and national attention as he demolished opponent after opponent in Almaty.

He said he was ‘heartbroken’ after his fight “I give my whole life to this sport and I know, when I go away and look it, that I’ll be absolutely honoured to be the first Irish boxer ever to get this far.”

The huge crowds that turned out to watch his final bout last Saturday at the Finn Valley AC Cerntre included the boxer’s mother, Muriel, a member of the love family and daughter of Muriel and the late robbie from Meenadreen, laghey. She and husband Conor lived in donegal Town for a spell before moving to Conor’s home town of Ballybofey. Jason received his early primary education at the local Glebe N.S. “I’m so proud of him. He has given his life to boxing. It just wasn’t meant to be, but he has done so well to get to where he has,” she said.

Maybe the end of this emotion week s best summed up by Irish Head Coach Billy Walsh who was loud in his praise of the silver medalist.

“His semi-final was a grueller and to have to get back in the ring less than 24 hours later to do it all again, when his opponent had a walk over, that was a telling factor. We can’t ask for anymore. He has had five really tough contests through this competition. By God, didn’t he leave everything. He went to the soles of his boots. Hats off to him, he is a true legend,” he said With successes over Vijender Singh, Aston Brown, Zoltan Harsca and Chebotarev to win Quigley won silver… but he’s also still our Golden boy!

Jason Quigley is good enough to Ireland with gold romteh 2016 Olympics, - that’s the view of Michael Carruth, who won a gold welterweight medal at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992.

Quigley lost out on a gold at the Amateur World Championships in Kazakhstan last week, losing on a unanimous decision against home nation favourite Zhanibek Alimkhanuly in the middleweight final.

“The old saying in boxing is you avoid the host nation and the Cuban, and the bottom line was he got the host nation in the last fight. It is a good learning curve for Jason,” he told IrishBoxing.Com “He was dropped in the first round but he came back at him in the last couple and it shows how much has improved over the last year or so.

“He is a young man he is going to come into his prime come Rio.”

Living Stroke alert for women

More females than men die from strokes

THE annual number of stroke deaths in Ireland has fallen below the 2,000 mark for the first time in years following a 9% fall in mortality in the last four years, the latest national statistics have revealed.

Central Statistics Office figures showed the number of deaths nationally fell by 188 to 1,928 to the end of 2012 despite our ageing population and a dramatic increase globally in the incidence of the disease. The figures also confirmed that almost twice

as many women as men died from stroke.

Tuesday was World Stroke Day and the national charity fighting stroke and heart disease issued a “red alert” to women to be vigilant about the warning signs of stroke after the statistics revealed that 53% more women than men died from stroke here in 2012.

Chris Macey from the Irish Heart Foundation said: “The higher death rate from strokes among women is not widely

known. The fact is that stroke kills almost twice as many women as breast cancer in Ireland which is why we are particularly asking women to make a special effort to be aware of the FAST warning signs today on World Stroke Day. The F.A.S.T. acronym stands for: • Face – has their face fallen on one side?

• Arms – can they raise both arms and keep them there?

• Speech – is their speech

slurred?

• Time – time to call 999 if you see any one of these signs.

Mr Macey added: “By knowing the warning signs, people can have a huge influence on their outcome after stroke, but only if they act on them.

The average stroke destroys roughly two million brain cells every minute, so the quicker you get to hospital after a stroke, literally the more of your brain can be saved. But you have to call

an ambulance immediately. There’s no advantage in knowing the signs if you don’t act on them.”

The Irish Heart Foundation welcomed the statistics as further evidence of the dramatic improvement in acute stroke services in Ireland.

Pupils are being asked to submit a story (it should be no longer than 500 words) to be in with a chance of winning a voucher for Eason in Letterkenny.

Every two weeks, we’ll select a winner who will get a €25 Eason voucher.

And at the end of the year the overall winner will get a fabulous €500 voucher.

Plus, the pupil’s school will get a voucher for €2,000.

Now that’s a great incentive for all.

Last year, we ran a similar com-

petition – and were delighted with the response.

Indeed, the standard was so high that it made us expand the competitition.

Reading is great for the mind, and the imagination, and should be encouraged.

IT was so nerve-racking, waiting for the results. “Number 126 (that was my number) you are going to the World Championship in New York!” the announcer shouted. I was going to qualify for the worlds for Irish Dancing!

I just couldn’t believe it. My mum ran over and grabbed me. “Well done, darling!” she shouted, as she gave me the biggest hug ever.

Later, I rang my granny to tell her the great news. She screamed, a lot. When we went home to visit her, she asked me all these random questions. Weird.

She said she wanted to come with me to the worlds. I said I would love her to!

When the day finally came, we woke up at five to go to the airport. We had to be there at six-thirty. I grabbed my suitcase as mum called out everything I needed.

“Have you got your dress, pomps and heavies?” mum said.

“Yep!” I shouted from upstairs. It was time to go and away we went. We got on the plane, and five hours later, we arrived. We were in New York!

When we got to the hall, we went into the dressing rooms. I put on my dress, my makeup and my wig. Showtime! I went on the stage and danced my heart out. Later that day, the results were called out.

“And the World Champion for Irish Dancing 2013 is...” the announcer shouted. My heart was racing. “Jade Doherty!” he shouted. I couldn’t believe it! I went up to get my trophy. My hard work paid off.

Loads of pictures were taken of me. Later that day, we went to Fifth Avenue to go shopping. I got loads of Hollister stuff, and a new dancing dress.

Later, I rang my dad and told him. He was so proud of me! When I went home I told my friends about my little holiday. Best holiday ever!

This has been a crazy week for all of here in Joe’s Butchers, finally we are getting very close to opening our new shop in Glencar and it’s great to see it all coming together.

There’s a great community up in Glencar and we will be in the middle of a vibrant busy community up there, find us right beside the post office.

Our shop here in the shopping Centre will still be just as it always was, still the same great deals and customer service just more choice for where you want to shop.

Eugene did great in the marathon, he sent me a quick e-mail and this is

what he said: “I did it in 3 hours and 47 minutes, came in 3,740th out of 14,600! It was one of the worst and best days of my life, the crowd was really good all the way around, giving high fives to kids was one of the things that kept me going! I always said I would never do it again after this, but we are talking about it already on the way home and I think I am up for it next year again. It was worth every early morning and all the weekends I stayed in.

One of the best days of my life, bring on next year, 3 hours 30 here I come . Would highly recommend it to anyone!! You up for it next year Joe?” So well done Eugene. We are all very proud of him here in the shop!

Not sure about me doing it next year though!!

We want to say a big thank you to all of you who have voted and sent your best wishes for our nomination for the Chamber of Commerce award for Customer Services Excellence.

People tell us that they love to come into our shop because they know they are always going to be greeted with a smile and there’s always a good atmosphere among all the staff. They are a great bunch and I’m very lucky to have a team like them behind Joes butchers to make it the great wee spot it is.

How the right fabric and colour palette can just pull a scheme together but do you know how important that other little layer behind your curtains is? Curtain linings are one of the most over looked and undervalued components of any window dressing, behind the scences and discreetly playing back up to your curtains, lining can really make or break your finished curtains.

Often considered an optional extra expense, some wonder why we even need to bother with it, when you don’t even see it. Well while you may not see it while your in your home you can certainly see the lack of it in the body of your curtains when it is absent and your

neighbours and passers by can see the lack of it from outside your home. The great thing about lining is it gives your curtains all a uniform cream finish from outside, rather than a Technicolor disaster they would be otherwise.

Despite the need for external colour co-ordination linings really do add extra body and weight to your curtains, giving them a

more luxurious finish. While you can have loose linings for your curtains, best linings are sown into the curtains, to ensure they set perfectly and there is no lining peeking out from behind your curtains. This extra layer will also protect your curtain fabric from the damaging effect of the sun, so they will last longer and not fade as quickly or even disintegrate in strong sunlight.

When it comes to choosing a lining there isn’t just

one choice, there is a whole world of options that will just send your head spinning with choice. Sateen lining is lining you will find in most curtains, it gives extra weight to a curtain and gives protection against sun fading. Blackout lining despite its name is not black but cream and blackout refers to its ability to block out light making it great for bedrooms or rooms with extreme sunlight and is used a lot in roman blinds. Excitement – how dogs react EXCITEMENT is a normal reaction to certain events or happenings.

For humans it is associated with happy times outings, birthdays, surprises and things like that cause excitement. In the animal world there is excitement also. When an owner returns from shopping a dog or cat can get very excited. They anticipate treats or excited greetings. Owners are also excited to see them, so there is petting and fun going on. If it can be started and stopped then everything is OK but when the excitement goes into over-excitement then things can get out of control.

This is not good. Control is impor-

tant in the animal world. It is how they keep things in order so that everything runs smoothly. Over-excited dogs jump up, often scratching your legs with their nails. If they are not taught that this is wrong then people get hurt and annoyed. An overexcited dog jumping up on a young child or an elderly person is a very dangerous thing.

They can knock people over and seriously hurt them if they fall the wrong way, or on concrete. Sometimes owners don’t realise that they are not the only people that their dog will encounter in their lifetime.

Dogs need to learn how to greet peo-

ple properly.

This needs to be practised with excitable dogs. There is nothing more irritating to most people than a dog landing on them the second they come in the door or gate. If the owner wants the dog to jump on them then ask the dog to jump up otherwise make it wait until it is asked, or else sit down to greet the dog so it doesn’t feel the urge to jump. When some owners decide to go for a walk the dog gets very excited. It often runs to get the lead and then can barely stay still until it is put on.

The owner is then dragged to the door and off down the road. This is

mayhem and there is no need for it.

This is not the fault of the dog. The owner has taught the dog to do this by not correcting it for getting out of control.

When a few dogs get together and one of them gets excited, because the owner is petting it or putting on it’s lead, then the others will try to take control and often a fight breaks out because the owner allowed the first dog to get too excited in the first place, and the owner may have caused the fight because the owner probably said “Walkies” or something similar to the dog, which caused the dog to get wound up. Talking excit-

edly to a dog excites the dog. If you want a dog to be calm then you need to either create a calm atmosphere or else teach it to stop responding excitedly by staying calm and not reacting yourself.

Rewarding calm behaviour encourages calm behaviour. Wait for the dog to calm down and then reward it. Always check back to the source of the trouble to see who is really to blame for excitable behaviour in animals, before you take action.

The Importance Of Socialising Your Dog OVER the last few weeks we have discussed how essential it is to socialise your dog from puppyhood in order to ensure that your dog grows into a confident, trusted member of society and a beloved member of the family.

However, if you have never properly socialised your dog, you may find that your pet is timid, nervous or even aggressive around people or dogs that they are not familiar with.

It is an unfortunate fact that the number one reason why

dogs end up at rehoming centres is through a lack of socialisation or from the problems that arise because of it.

Socialising your dog is so easy that a lot of people fail to take it seriously. However, without adequate socialisation the result is their physical and emotional health can be irreversibly compromised.

If you fail to socialise your dog properly, you may end up with a pet that is an outcast to society, one that doesn’t fit-in and can’t be trusted.

Sadly there are many dogs in this very situation living out their days permanently confined to the back yard. Dogs that miss out on the critical socialisation period often exhibit aggression, timidity or fear towards people.

They are also often incapable of relating properly with other dogs and they may develop two of the most serious and hard-to-resolve problems; biting and fighting.

your dog, or you adopted an older dog from a rescue centre, there are things you can do to help the situation.

Although socialising an older dog is distinctly more difficult than with a younger pup, it is not impossible, provided that you are willing to put in the time, effort and patience required.

When it comes to socialising your dog with people, it is best to bring a friend around to the house and have them sit quietly in the same room as your dog. If your dog runs away and hides, allow them to come out in their own time once they’ve seen that the visitor poses no threat and they start to feel a little curious. It may also help to have your visitor give your dog some treats so your dog associates strangers with positive experiences rather than stress and fear.

You may find that it takes a few visits until your dog starts to feel comfortable around a new person, but never rush your dog and ensure they always have somewhere to escape to if they feel overwhelmed.

Once your dog seems content to have one guest in the house, gradually begin to introduce other new people to your dog.

It is important that all of your dog’s interactions with other people should be kept as positive as possible.

When your dog is interacting appropriately and calmly with other people, use praise and treats so your dog associates having other people around as a good thing.

When it comes to socialisation with other dogs, the goal should be to teach your dog to behave calmly in public and on walks.

If your heart is set on social time with other dogs, start by introducing your dog to one dog at a time.

Invite a friend to bring their well-socialised, gentle, easygoing dog on a walk with you and your dog. Allow polite distance between dogs while they get accustomed to each other. Take lots of small, tasty treats on your walks and reward your dog for walking calmly.

If both dogs appear relaxed throughout the walk, allow

them to sniff each other briefly. Keep leashes loose and each interaction short. If either dog appears to be tensing up, call the dogs apart with pleasant, relaxed voices.

If at any stage your dog seems overwhelmed or at all aggressive, then call it quits and try again on another day, as it can take a few sessions until your dog feels comfortable. When socialising your dog with people or other dogs it is important to remember that safety always comes first. The bottom line is that socialisation of any kind only benefits dogs if they find it enjoyable.

The Tower of Song: The Cohen Project at An Grianan Theatre LIAM O’Maonlai of the Hot House Flowers leads a show of what promises to be a great night of songs written by the legendary Leonard Cohen at An Grianán Theatre on Fri 1 November.

Thor: The Dark World continues the big-screen adventures of Marvel’s Thor the Mighty Avenger.

In the first movie Thor (Chris Hemsworth) was an outcast. One year on from the Avengers, he is heir apparent and keeping an eye on things in the name of Asgard.

But the future of the universe itself is under threat. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor is forced to embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet.

His journey will see him reunited with astrophysicist Jane Foster (Natalie Portman).

Their paths cross when a McGuffin is rediscovered and the Dark Elf Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) awakes from his slumber and joins forces with it. The Nine Realms are thrown into great danger by the return of this dark and ancient race, led by the vengeful Malekith.

At first Thor is happy to back in contact but with humanity and in particular Jane Foster.

However he is ultimately forced to make some big sacrifices in order to save the universe.

Game of Thrones director Alan Taylor has made a visually stunning film with some

beautiful scenes and just enough grime and rubble to make it feel real.

The usual superhero themes are there in abundance, with plenty of moral dilemma, envy and personal sacrifice. But the pace is blistering and there is a decent amount of action, interspersed with banter and some good comedy moments.

Fans of Marvel will not be disappointed.

GLENSWILLY will be hoping that they can make a mockery of Donegal’s miserable record when it comes to the Ulster Senior Football Club Championship.

Since the competition began back in 1968, only one Donegal club – the now defunct St. Joseph’s – has managed to lift the Seamus McFerran Cup. St. Joseph’s, comprised of players from Ballyshannon and Bundoran, were the dominant force in Donegal football between 1965 and 1976 during which time they won the Donegal Senior Football Championship on eight occasions.

But during this spell they only managed to lift the Ulster title on one occasion.

They became the ďŹ rst Donegal club to reach the Ulster Senior Football club championship decider in its inaugural year, 1968, but lost out to Bellaghy of Derry.

In 1973, they made it to the final again but were beaten by Armagh’s Clan na nGael. However, in 1975 they got to the ďŹ nal and defeated Castleblayney Faughs.

Since then, Donegal pickings have been few and far between. In fact, it wasn’t until 1991 that a Donegal club reached the ďŹ nal again. Killybegs endured a purple patch in the late 80s and early 90s.

They won ďŹ ve county championships between 1988 and 1996, not to mention losing in two other ďŹ nals. In fact, they reached the county ďŹ nal seven times in nine years.

But they too endured some rocky roads when it came to the Ulster championship and their solitary appearance in a ďŹ nal ended in defeat as they lost, ironically, to Castle-

blayney Faughs, in 1991.

A lean spell then followed with not one Donegal club managing to make it to the ďŹ nal for 18 years.

The barren run ended though in 2010 when Naomh Conaill got to the ďŹ nal only to come up against arguably the best club side the country has ever seen in the form of Crossmaglen Rangers. The Armagh oufit have won the Ulster title 14 times and when they beat the Glenties men (2-09 to 0-10), and it was in the middle of a run that saw them lifting the silverware seven times in a nine year spell. The Armagh side also won the All-Ireland

Senior Football Club Championship that year – and now hold six All-Ireland titles.

History has not been kind to Donegal in the Ulster club championship. You can’t change the past, but you can shape the future. How Glenswilly would love to give the championship a real old rattle and become only the second Donegal club to sample the taste of success at this level. First things ďŹ rst, though, and nobody underestimates the challenge. The quarter-ďŹ nal hurdle must be cleared. And that is all the players and management can focus on at this stage.

Glenswilly can edge it DONEGAL champions Glenswilly have had little time to celebrate their Donegal championship success as next Sunday they set out in quest of an Ulster club title when they entertain Antrim winners St.Gauls in Ballybofey with a 2.30pm throw-in, writes Pauric McShea.

Antrim club football is of a very high standard and it is hard to understand why this is not reflected in better results for their county team, but St.Gauls are seasoned Ulster club operators and they will provide a stern test for the men from the Glen, even in Ballybofey.

After winning the championship in style Glenswilly will have a degree of ambition about their prospects in Ulster this year, and they are a side that play with more than a little courage.

They have a number of talented players in their ranks and they must believe that a sustained run in the provincial campaign is well within their capability.

Events in Donegal will have underpinned belief in their prospects this year as distinct from two years ago when winning their first ever senior championship may have sated their appetite. They go into this game as slight favourites in the eyes of the bookies. They are quoted at evens while the Belfast side are on offer at 6/5.

The county men in the Glenswilly team have led from the front this year with Neil Gallagher and Ciaran Bonner back to their best while the Murphy factor will again have a huge bearing on the outcome of this match. Again on Saturday Michael Murphy was excellent when leading the Irish team to an emphatic win in Croke Park. He is playing superb football and no doubt the Antrim mentors

will have legislated in some way to dilute his impact, but no defence will stop Michael for 60 minutes.

Ulster club football means that the best nine teams in the province are in action so it is a real step up in standard from county championship. In what will be a very close encounter Glenswilly are good enough to prevail but they will have many anxious moments against Gauls.

Annmarie’s joy after marathon

From couch to marathon joy

FROM the couch to running a marathon – all in the space of nine months. It’s a tremendous achievement, and one that she can be truly proud of.

Annmarie Lowney Roche, like many others in the 14,000 strong field in last Monday’s Dublin City Marathon, was doing it for the first time.

The 33-year-old financial advisor, who hails from Killybegs, works in Ballybofey and lives in Glenswilly, leads a busy life.

But the mother of a 23 month old girl decided to give running a go this year – and she has never looked back.

Annmarie had no back ground in running, and readily admits that she never considered herself to be the running type.

“Was running a marathon a dream or an ambition of mine? No, only fit sporty people run and I was never one of those,” she recalls.

“I have been over weight all my childhood and most my adult life, always the last picked on a team at school! After losing all my baby weight, last Christmas, while stuffing myself with Cadbury’s Roses I said I was going to set myself a challenge! As running was the “in” thing I said I was going to run a half marathon.”

She picked out one in Dublin in August and that was her aim. Training started with Michael Black at Optimal Fitness in Letterkenny at the end of January. He gave her the training and confidence that she needed and she knew she could do it.

tears she did her first half Marathon in August, spurred on by another runner Stacey Blake who she trained with over some pretty testing hills around Donegal.

Anne Marie then completed another half marathon in Derry, on her own. She was well pleased with her time and thought to her herself, it would be a pity to stop there.

Several people warned her about the demands of doing a full marathon, especially as he had on ly really begun running this year. But she stubbornly decided to go for it.

“A month ago I found a fantastic running group ‘Run LK’ who were aiming to run in the Dublin marathon.

“They’re a fantastic group of people. I joined in with them and after a few long runs I entered!

Penning her thoughts, via facebook, in the aftermath of Monday’s marathon, she wrote: “ This morning as I lie in bed aching all over, toe nails missing, and problems I won’t share, I am so proud with what I have achieved. If I can do this anyone can.”

■ A hurling and camogie blitz for 4th class pupils in Letterkenny schools was held in Game last week.

The blitz was organised by Letterkenny Gaels with assistance from Martin McGrath, Donegal GAA schools hurling coach and Yvonne Byrne, Regional Camogie Development Officer. Boys and girls from Woodlands, Lurgybrack, Illistrin, Gaelscoil and Ballyraine took part in the competition. There were skilful and competitive matches throughout with all players getting their chance to participate. Player of the tournament awards went to David Kilcullen, Gaelscoil and Yasmin Gallagher, Woodlands. The winners of the hurling competition were Woodlands whilst the girls from Ballyraine taking part for the first time, won the camogie blitz. It was wonderful to see over 100 children playing at such a high level and enjoying every minute.

GYMNASTS’ DELIGHT THE Finesse Gymnastics Display Team, which trains and is based in Letterkenny, won an International medal after they took the team silver at the London Festival of Gymnastics.

The team comprises 15 gymnasts ranging in age from 8-17 from all over the county.

The team trains under the direction of head coach, Meganne Herron and team choreographer Linda Bennett.

The team qualified for the London festival of gymnastics back in May 2013. This qualification selected the top 60 teams from hundreds of teams across Ireland and Britain. This is the second year in succession that the Finesse Team had qualified for London a feat in itself.

They are also only the secondever Irish team to make the final stage of the festival in successive years.

Around 1400 gymnasts participated in this year’s festival.

They competed against extremely stiff competition from across Britain and Ireland.

The gymnasts performed to the very best of their abilities and executed an outstandingly solid and

precise routine.

The gymnasts were awarded with silver medals for their performance of their routine - Alice in Wonderland - just behind England’s Spirit who are coached by the same coaching team as Britain’s Got Talent winners Spellbound.

This placing was accredited to Finesse’s execution, precision and clarity of theme throughout their routine.

This is a huge feat for this young team especially as they are the first Irish team to receive this accolade.

The team is now looking to set their sights on Europe and are aiming to qualify for European Championships in Italy in July 2014. Who knows what the future may hold for this young and talented team of girls!
