I am delighted to be writing an introduction for our final year interior design students end of year book, here at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU). This year’s cohort have been a pleasure to teach and it has been an exciting year seeing them grow as designers, gaining in confidence and skill in readiness for their next chapter, working in design or studying at a higher level. Since moving back to ‘in-person’ teaching full time, the cohort have connected as a year group supporting each other and sharing their final year experience together. This year’s cohort have demonstrated their commitment and determination to succeed and make the most of the tutors, their peers and the resources provided, this can be seen in the quality and variety of work produced. The Major Design Projects (selected by students) this year have covered a variety of topics including climate change and

sustainability as well as projects of a more light-hearted nature, such as travel-inspired leisure environments and spaces in which to relax, socialise and leave the urban chaos behind. These projects demonstrate the range of students interests and design ambitions coupled with the ability to work with and select interesting buildings which have the capacity to be reimagined. This approach encourages students to push the boundaries of design and aims to create industry ready well-rounded designers.

It is an absolute privilege to be part of the students learning experience at DMU and on behalf of the Interior Design programme team we would like to congratulate our final year students on their achievements and wish them well for a bright and successful future working in this exciting discipline.

The Crescent is a serene space designed for focused study and personalisation. With various amenities, visitors can study for their specific needs with a fun feature to take a break and play four different games, allowing for a quick mental rest before diving back into their work. Overall, the project’s purpose is to create a welcoming and inspiring space that supports visitors’ personal growth and development, tailored to their needs through customization.

An Afro-Caribbean hair salon, fused with a beauty retail space that aims to build a community; as well as provide customers with an experience and not just a service. The salon also aims to educate customers about their hair types and celebrate different skin tones.

Welcome to Indoor Camping. A place where people can come together and have their camping experience, but in an indoor space. The place offers all sorts of activities for children and even the experience of a BBQ. The place is located at 11 St George Street, in the Mercury Place building.

A disruptive brand, with a counter-cultural attitude redefining customer choice. NOLO, an abbreviation for No and Low, is an idiosyncratic bar, gym, and café concept. By excluding the common transactions of alcohol, caffeine, and elevated heart rate exercise, NOLO aims to shake up the concept of existing business models. A fun, positive, social setting geared towards a natural high. It will allow a different social setting to grow, becoming a regular and excepted alternative.

Located in Watford, Hertfordshire. A modern redesigned Christian church and community hub inclusive to all, inspired by the natural elements. The sense of grandeur and tranquillity created, provides a sanctuary for all members of the community, as well as paying homage to the church’s spiritual significance.

Metamorphosis is a sculpture-based immersive exhibition that educates visitors on the vital role of bees in our ecosystem. It offers a captivating sensory experience highlighting the impact of declining bee populations, promoting conservation efforts, and encouraging visitors to create suitable bee environments in their homes and gardens.

For political systems to be representative, all parts of society must be included. The youth are currently underrepresented and disengaged from political processes, undermining political systems’ representativeness. To make a difference in the longer term, it is essential that young people are engaged in formal political processes. Phase43’s concept aims to open doors for decision making spaces for the youth whilst strengthening youth parties and exhibiting them in a positive light.

The Abbey Pumping Station Retreat is an innovative spa and wellness space. It allows users to escape from daily stressors, with the choice of two journeys and an overnight stay. It draws inspiration from the history of the building through the use of hot and cold steam and water immersions.

An educational hub designed to engage people with the issues surrounding plastic pollution, providing an experience that educates, through an interactive outlook. Creating personalised journeys by using the brand’s watches, scanned throughout the Immersive Experience, or recycling plastic through the on-site workshop, a community hub built around change.

The Middle Ground is an educational sustainability centre which helps visualise the effects of waste pollution on the environment. It consists of two parts, an exhibition and a learning area with workshops. It is aimed for people between the ages of 18 to 30.

All Inclusive Resort is located in North West Croatia. What makes the location so different is the fact that it’s built on the cliff. The main goal behind this project is to offer a free holiday to all disabled children aged 10 16 in Croatia. Success would mean children having a carefree holiday in a fully accessible resort that looks like any other typical hotel. The building itself is connecting outdoor and indoor space without taking away from the view. The resort is supposed to only be a vehicle, children are the ones making the space feel special.

The Fair Chance Youth Detention Centre repurposes a currently derelict set of buildings on the Fair Charm Industrial Estate in to a safe, bright space for 28 12-17 year old male youth offenders. The centre is designed with rehabilitation at its core, with a focus on preparing the children for life after release.

The project goal is to develop a space that is still relevant to the old façade of the building, but to be made with modern elements. The ambition is not to change it completely ,but rather harmonise it with the existing facade. The project is to be developed in the context of heritage conservation, in which each building should be a unique entity, rather than existing as a row of identical buildings that could be replaced for one with another. Reimagining an old building into a modern boutique hotel.

‘Tough Love’ is an exhibition that hopes to break LGBTQ+ stereotypes through historical information and emotive storytelling; providing representation that is lacking in this location for a community that is currently needing it the most, due to recent rises in hate crimes. Educating society on the vast history and story of the LGBTQ+ community hopes to highlight these current backward statistics and prevent any form of phobic hate and anxiety based on the lifetimes of hurt and hope that will be witnessed during this exhibition.

Level Up Is a new and innovative way to approach the blind dating scene where individuals who are looking for love, book online to take part in a dating night with no prior knowledge of who they may meet. The date night consists of various activities to promote a light-hearted and fun take on dating. The idea is you go through each stage of the experience starting in a large group and eventually end up with a special connection with someone. The dating space is situated in a multi storey car park which is the main design influence through out the interior.

A Leicester City centre multi-functional women’s dedicated space. The ground floor consists of a relaxing cafe, whilst the first floor has a vintage shop. The main purpose of the project, however, is hidden behind a secret door which leads into a rape crisis centre where women access help and counselling.
