Fashion Design at DMU

Fashion Design at De Montfort University (DMU) is a dynamic course which inspires students to explore the relationship between design and technology. We blend theory with practice, fostering creativity within a theoretical and philosophical framework, supporting the students as they develop technical skills and understanding.

Our graduates meet the demands of the fashion industry and can confidently navigate the boundaries between creativity, technology and design. As an acknowledged leader in creative education, we work tirelessly to give our students a rich and rewarding experience. With our support, they realise their full potential and enter the workplace ready to make a valuable contribution from the start.

Our students have many opportunities to work on project briefs set by industry and to enter prestigious national and international competitions. They gain design and technical expertise relevant to a range of fashion activities, particularly womenswear, menswear and fashion knitwear.

We nurture their talent, develop their creativity and encourage them to exceed their own expectations.

GRADUATE FASHION FOUNDATION X CRISIS X LOVE NOT LANDFILL UPCYCLING, SIZE-INCLUSIVE DESIGN COMPETITION

The sustainable fashion competition was a partnership between the Graduate Fashion Foundation (GFF), homelessness charity Crisis and Love Not Landfill, a campaign to reduce fast fashion and encourage recycling. Sustainable designs by DMU Fashion Design students, Sasha Treimane, Kaci Horseman and Byron Davalos III were sold in London stores after their win in the national fashion competition.

FASHION DESIGN KNITWEAR SUCCESS STORIES 2023

Knitwear design is offered within the Fashion Design curriculum at DMU. Students have creative control over the design and creation of their knitted fabrics and garments practising both digital and traditional techniques to produce innovative and creative responses to live industry briefs and competitions.

Sara Roudbari - Highly Commended

Sara’s project “I woke up like this” is inspired by the safe space of one’s bedroom. I’ve explored creating textures and shapes that will make you feel like you are still in bed, comfy and dreaming.

Rags

Kaci’s concept aims to bring awareness to the energy crisis and the gap between the most affluent and the poorest in society. Secondhand garments were transformed into an all-in-one which converts into a jacket with functional detailing.

Sasha’s concept visually captured the feeling of happiness, when positive emotions are so strong you can physically feel them, translating this state of mind into clothing.

The Worshipful Company of Framework Knitters

Clifford Amponsah - Awarded £3,000 bursary

Clifford’s project, ‘Who Am I?’ considers the practicalities of working with leather, woven material and knit for menswear in an effort to reduce waste and promote sustainability

Collaboration with Pantherella Luxury sock manufacturer

Ana’s collection, ‘Through Your Eyes’ is inspired by her sister and her love for socks. Pantherella provided waste socks which were repurposed to produce the collection promoting a sustainable practice.

Weight

Byron designed a purposeful travel outfit for all weathers and for comfort whilst keeping the idea of carrying “weight” the focus with all that this encompasses, both physically and metaphorically.
