alentine’s Day can be great for people in relationships but difficult for single people. Single people must go the whole day alone while they watch couples doing romantic activates and getting romantic gifts for each other, but Roosevelt students want everyone to have great Valentine’s Day.

Here are some tips and tricks and words of advice from are fellow students and staff members.

Valentine’s Day is a completely different experience for people in relationships. Maddie Thomas, a taken person said, “chocolates and flowers go along way”. Talking about what guys should do for their Valentine, Danny another taken person said, “just get her what she wants”. Solid advice. Kenny Brooks said, “just get them 2K” when he was talking about what the girl should do for the guy on Valentine’s Day. This day can be an interesting and fun day for people who are in a relationship.

“Buy him 2k.” -Kenny Brooks

Mrs. Olsen, a math teacher at Roosevelt said, “I’m old school, like when a guy gives presents the the girl,” so there are some people who like the romantic side to Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day isn’t just for girls, guys like a little recognition, too.

Leo Gaukel, a single freshman at Roosevelt said “frankly do what you want”. This is great advice for a single person because that day isn’t just about people in relationships, so single people do what you want on Valentine’s Day, like watching movies or playing video games or any fun activities. Kenny Brooks said, “you could make a poster or get some chocolates.” You don’t need to spend a lot to make a

big impression! Talking about what single people could do to not be single after Valentine’s Day or how to make your valentine happy if you are taken. Single people still can have fun Valentines’s Days, and maybe even get up the nerve to ask someone out!

In conclusion, Valentine’s Day is a completely different experience depending on whether you are single or taken. Many of the staff and students had comments on Valentine’s Day, giving their advice and tips for both taken and single people. Good luck and have a good Valentine’s Day Roosevelt!

Couple Compatabil Do you ever wonder who you’d be most compatible with? What sign will be the best match for you for Valentine's Day. If you’re an Aquarius, your most compatible sign is the strong-willed Leo. These signs are open to people willing to take risks with them, they’re very complex. Both are very committed and honest with one another.

The second most compatible signs are the Aries and Libra. This would also be a power couple. Aries and Libras are very expressive without thinking too much about it, it comes naturally. These two are adventurous and always passionate. The best part about their exciting adventurous relationship is how they express their love for each other without thinking. This relationship will never have a dull moment. There is always a downside to a relationship and with this one is the trust. Libras are not trusting people and sometimes Aries can be too harsh when speaking about trust.

Between the Gemini and Sagittarius, communication is key. you must be able to speak witY each other to work out issues. The biggest challenge is to find feelings that’ll last. Both signs have a non-emotional feel to them, but their contact develops so much emotion that maybe neither one of them will be able to cope with it. Pisces and Virgo can both be very gentle with each other relationship, and these signs are also very passionate, and don’t enjoy short term. They complement each other best through communication and intellectual stimulation. When they start their relationship, they are bound to realize how similar they are, even though they seem so different. The mutable quality of their signs will allow them to jump from topic to topic, both staying interested in the flow and the outcome of their conversations.

PIsces and Libra, apparently another compatablity

ity

The Taurus and Scorpio relationship takes patience from both signs, you must pay attention to the little details. Both signs can be very needy but still it can work very well. There is a deep understanding of everything natural going on between the two. The Taurus partner is really closed, unreachable and too quiet. This could wake the suspicious nature of a Scorpio. The two C’s, Capricorn and Cancers compatibility must include feelings and emotions. They have a very mutual affection towards each other, even though their circumstances might be completely different. This could make them able to talk about anything. Capricorn could be very difficult to talk to from Cancer’s perspective. They both need stability in their lives and will value people who give them the sense of security. something they will value most in each other, the ability of both not to quit or give up, however hard These are only suggestions. Your belief in astrology is up to you. The suggestions don’t matter if you’re with somone you love and cherish.

Valentine’s Day. A day of love and affection with boxes of chocolates and teddy bears. Lots of people love Valentine’s Day because it is a holiday that celebrates relationships, and couples all over the world get to give gifts to each other and go on romantic dates. People all around the world celebrate Valentine’s Day, but how many people actually know where the holiday originates? Alyssa Kunz, a senior says, “Valentine’s Day means a lot to me. I love giving gifts to my friends and family and just spreading love in general. I’ve always celebrated Valentine’s Day with friends and family.” Valentine’s Day is a

holiday when lovers express their views with greetings and gifts. It was from the Roman festival in Lupercalia that the party celebrated in mid-February. The festival, which celebrated the arrival of spring, included female fertility ceremonies and lottery coupling. The first Valentine’s Day was held in the year 496. February 14th was the beginning of the birds mating season so that added to the idea of having Valentine’s Day on the 14th. Writing Valentines didn’t start to appear until after 1400. However, it is believed that Americans exchanged valentines in

the early 1700’s. Maguire Dillon, a sophomore says, “I have mixed feelings about Valentine’s Day. It is annoying to see couples kissing in the hallways and it makes everyone uncomfortable. Other than that, though, I think it is a fun holiday.”

ove makes the world go ‘round. But can love be more difficult for students who are are LGBTQ? Valentine’s Day is a special day for many people because it is when people give gifts to that special person in their lives. Many people have different opinions about this holiday and some students in the LGBTQ community tend to have different opinions about Valentine’s Day. Being LGBTQ can have some dating challenges while in high school. While Roosevelt High School staff and students are supportive allies, dating can sometimes be a concern. One issue is the smaller population of eligible students. Often, there just arents as many people to pick from. Many LGBTQ students may look outside of their own school when dating. Another very real issue is when LGBTQ students are not “out”. High school relationships can be complicated no matter who is involved. According to the site loveisrespect.org, there are some tips to

VALENTINE’S DAY

having a healthy LGBTQ relationship. Things to look for are:

Partners who: “Respect your chosen gender pronouns or name. Respect your boundaries. Give you space to hang out with friends and family without thinking you’re cheating. Never threaten to out you to people”.

By Kimberlin Rosas, Levi Hankenson, and Staff “It feels alright [being LGBTQ], like nobody really says anything, they just stare at you.” -Terrion Cunningham

Two Roosevelt students were interviewed for this topic; Terrion Cunningham and Isaiah Wade both 10th graders at Roosevelt High School. Both students do not currently have a Valentine. When asked about the hardships of dating, Wade commented “Well, it’s not as though Roosevelt has the best options, does it? Yes. It’s hard.” Staff member and advisor of the Gay Straight Alliance (GSA), Mrs. Sutton, said “I think [Roosevelt] is safer than most schools [for LGBTQ], but we have a way to go to make it better”.

Isaiah Wade (left) is a student at Roosevelt High School. He is part of the LGBTQ community. When asked about Valentine’s Day he responded “Valentine’s Day is a corporate holiday. The fact that we have one day to show our ‘love’ when we should be loving everyday is dumb. It’s all about money.” Isiah belives being LGBTQ is no different from being heterosexual at Roosevelt.

Fun at the Formal

Fancy Footwork at Formal By Daniel Pradovich, Hunter Andersen, and Staff

On January 25th in the Roosevelt gym Winter Formal, All of the Lights, took place. It was open to all Roosevelt students. Student council sanctioned events like the winter formal help develop a sense of school community. Many students enjoy themselves and have a great time at school dances, they are a key part of the high school experience. Dances are also a great way for the Roosevelt Student Council to fundraise, allowing them to put on other events.

There was a small turnout at the formal, but it did not affect the positive atmosphere present at the dance. Roosevelt shut off the lights and placed glowing balloons and disco balls across the gym, to add to the feeling of excitement. The DJ played popular music that the crowd of students enjoyed listening to. Carter Ballard a freshman on the swim team stated that his enjoyment at the dance was 11 out of 10 and said he looks forward to attending the next dance. Levon Stanfield a sophomore who attended the formal said his enjoyment was 5 out of 10 and he said “I hate the advertisements for the dance.

The more entertainment you can offer the kids, the better Brent Wooters

The school could improve turnout at the dance by better advertising, many students were not aware of the date of formal until that day. Brent Wooters the faculty member in charge of organizing the formal said, he believed the dance went well and he thought the variety of music was good but referred to the students for their feedback. School dances are a great opportunity for students to feel more involved in the school community while at the same time providing funds to our student council.

wkward dating stories. Students have them and believe it or not, teachers have them, too. Whether its getting caught in a lie, getting hit with a shoe or holding in a fart for two hours, we ALL have dates that went terribly wrong. ANDREW KNAPP: “Me and this girl went and got tacos for dinner, and as we sat in this movie for three hours and I had to fart the whole time. Right as this movie got done, she left in her car and I left in mine. I went home to the bathroom and I sat on the toilet for over an hour farting the whole time and she tried to facetime me three times and I had to act like I was in my room”. NAHIEM TILLMAN: “I was in an apartment with a friend and I was asleep and these girls walked in the room and opened the door, so we went into the room and she started kissing me and we ran into the shoe rack and it fell over and a 10 inch heel hit her in the eye and she yelled “ahh stop” so our night got cut a little short”. MR. McGHGHY “This was in college, and my girlfriend from high school showed up to the college where I played football on my birthday. She handed me a card that said happy birthday and I said ‘ahh thank you’ and then she kicked me because as I opened it I realized that it had been left on my car by my college girlfriend. So, she had to get in her car and drive all the way back to Cedar Falls. I’m kind of bad for that one”.

MS. MCCANN: “ I was set up on a blind date by a friend and I talked to the guy on the phone for a while before we ever had a chance to meet. We finally met to go golfing and when I showed up, he had rotten teeth. I bailed”. MR. DOWLER: “I sent my ex-college crush anonymous flowers and another guy took credit for it”. MRS. CRAWFORD: “My college boyfriend and I went out to dinner. I ended up getting food poisioning and it came on VERY fast. We had to stop on the side of the highway while I totally barfed my guts out for an hour. I ate shrimp, it wasn’t pretty. Clearly, there was no kissing after that”.

uring Valentine’s Day in China, young women prepare offerings of melon and other fruits to the god Zhinu in hopes of finding a good husband. Couples also go to temples to pray for happiness and prosperity. At night, people look at the sky to watch as stars come close during the star-crossed annual reunion. Valentin’es Day is differnt around the world. An Italian Valentine’s Day tradition was for young unmarried girls to wake up before sunrise to spot their future husbands. The belief was that the first man a woman saw on Valentine’s Day was the man she would marry within a year or he’d at least strongly resemble the man she would marry. Today, Italians celebrate Valentine’s Day with gift exchanges between lovers. One of the most popular gifts in Italy is Baci Perugina, which are chocolate covered hazelnuts wrapped with a romantic quote printed in four languages. Brazilians skip the February 14th celebration and instead celebrate Dia dos Namorados or “Lovers day” on June 12th. In addition to the usual exchanges of chocolates, flowers and cards, music festivals and performances are held throughout the country. People also celebrate this day of love by exchanging gifts and sharing dinner with friends and relatives too. The following day is Saint Anthony’s day, on this day single women perform a ritual called simpatias (a love spell) in hopes that St. Anthony will bring them a husband. Like many parts of the world, South Africa celebrates with festivals, flowers and other tokens of love. It’s also customary for women in South Africa to wear their hearts on their sleeves, women pin the names on their love interest on their

shirt sleeves. In some cases, this is how south African men learn of their secret admirers. Maybe Roosevelt students should pin names on their sleeves this year? Just like manypeople in the world, men and women in India, particularly young couples, celebrate Valentine’s Day in a big way. They dress in fine clothing and show their loved one how they feel about them. Hotels and restaurants are fully booked to accommodate couples who are expressing and celebrating their love for each other. Post offices are filled with flower deliveries, packages and letters. Although Valentine’s Day is a relatively new holiday in Denmark, the country has embraced February 14th with their own twist. Rather than roses, friends and couples exchange pressed white flowers called snowdrops. Another popular Danish Valentine’s Day tradition is for men to give women Gaekkebreu, a letter consisting of a funny poem or rhyme written on cut paper and signed only with anonymous dots. If a woman who receives the Gaekkebreu can correctly guess the sender she gets an Easter egg later that year. Valentine’s Day is a holiday celebrated through many countries across the world, the holiday is meant to cherish loved ones and family members as well as an opportunity to exchange gifts, eat good food and celebrate family.

Horrors of Valentine’s Day: Sexually Transmitted Diseases at Roosevelt

The Hidden

S

By Keila Almendarez, Katrin Klassen & Staff

exually transmitted disease is a phrase that students have come to recognize over the last few years, but how close to home is it to Roosevelt students? With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, the number of STDs affecting the youth only continues to skyrocket, from chlamydia going to as high as 14,695 cases in Iowa to gonorrhea with a reported 4,839 cases as of 2018. How dangerous are these sexually transmitted diseases? They cause an average of 28 deaths every year and have many physical side effects. Some of these long-term side effects are pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, tubal or ectopic pregnancy, cervical cancer, and even death. Along with the physical effects, STDs have extremely negative effects on someone’s mental state. For example, those suffering from STDs report having anxiety, fear of rejection, guilt, and embarrassment.

In high schools like Roosevelt, sexually transmitted diseases can be easily spread, so students need to be educated about the dangers so they can hopefully be prevented. Laws in Iowa require that students are taught about the risks of STDs, such as HIV and AIDS, and how to avoid getting one. The school nurse at Roosevelt, Nicole Cable, says, “In the state of Iowa, there’s actually a network for treatment...”, so there are opportunities to get properly tested and treated. In 2017, 46 percent of high school students in America report having had sexual intercourse, and all 46 percent have the possibility of contracting an STD. Today, that number

is probably even higher, so if someone is participating in sexual intercourse, it is important to be safe by using condoms and getting vaccinated for STDs. One Roosevelt student, who asked to remain anonymous, discussed their concerns about STDs. “I believe I’ve heard three or more rumors of STDs at Roosevelt. I’ve also had a loved one who was affected by a sexually transmitted disease.” Lastly, students said that some ways Roosevelt can help its students struggling with STDs would be to create a health class where they can receive support and educate themselves on ways to get treated.

“In the state of Iowa, there’s a network for treatment.” -Nurse Cable

If someone thinks they have an STD, it can be difficult to admit it. They should find a trusted guardian or parent who can help the person find the next step. Even a Roosevelt staff member, such as a close teacher or school nurse can help. Ms. Cable said, “...I think it’s really important to be open to students when they have questions.” Staff members, such as Ms. Cable, are always willing to listen and have the students’ best interests in mind. Roosevelt staff can help make suggestions for where to go to get tested or treated and have the student shealth and best interest in mind. Although some might be embarrassed or ashamed, it is better toknow and get treated, both for yourself and your partners. In Iowa, a minor can be tested and treated for an STD confidentially, so even though it may be difficult, getting help is the best option.
