SUNSETS BEACHES AND BOATS Here are the Best Lakes in Iowa! D

o you enjoy the warmth of the sun on your back as you are fishing or boating at your favorite lake? Have you also been looking for a new lake to spend your free time at? Are you looking to throw a party and need a shelter with enough things to do surrounding it? Here are some of the best lakes in Iowa and the best ways to spend your time there! The first spot on our list is Grays Lake! It is located on Fleur Drive in Des Moines Iowa. It is about five miles away from Roosevelt High School. Grays Lake has many fun amenities like boat access and rental, there are picnic tables surrounding the lake, a beach specifically for dogs and another just for people. They recently put in a concession stand where you rent the boats and other watercraft rentals. Grays Lake was last stocked with fish in 2019 according to the DNR website. The website also said the maximum depth is only 16.4 ft and its surface is 96 acres. Grays Lake has many different trails surrounding the lake, most of them being paved. The main path is 2.10 miles long and connects you to both Downtown and Waterworks

Park. The path also partially goes over the water and the bridge that takes you across has beautiful lights. The connecting part that brings Waterworks into Grays Lake has just recently been constructed to go underneath Fleur which makes it an easy and safe way for pedestrians to cross. The main path is very smooth and would be perfect for skating and riding bikes! Lily Vande, a sophomore stated “My favorite lake to go to is probably Grays Lake because I have a bunch of good memories of me and friends hanging out there. I always liked riding my bike or walking on the bridge with my friends and family. It has some beach-y areas but I never went there to go on the beach or to fish it was always just to walk or ride bikes. My favorite time to go to Grays Lake is probably the summer because even though it’s almost always super hot we usually got to get ice-cream and dinner afterwards to cool off.” Next up is Saylorville Lake! Saylorville acts as a reservoir for the Des Moines River and controls flooding. It is located in Polk County and is about 30 minutes

north of Roosevelt High School. One of the main attractions to Saylorville is the road that goes across the top of the 105-foot-tall dam. This road provides the perfect spot to watch the sunset or watch the water fall out of the spillway. On the south side of the dam there is a campground and a park. It also has another pond on opposite side which is more of an overflow, yet you can take your boat out on it to fish. There are multiple volleyball nets and many different shelters which are perfect for parties. On the north side of the dam there is 26,000 acres of water where you can have boats, jet skis, kayaks and whatever else you can think of! There is also a marina where you can rent boats. There are separate campgrounds that surround Saylorville, some have very easy access to the water. Saylorville also has paths in its wooded areas including a butterfly garden. “I think my favorite lake is Saylorville because that’s the lake I’ve always gone to since I was little. I mostly just boat and kayak with my friends, I like swimming too. My favorite time to go is in the summer because the weather is usually perfect when it’s not windy.”

Said Sydnie Greer, sophomore. Roosevelt’s teacher and their families love lake time too! “One of my favorite lakes to visit in Iowa is Saylorville. It’s not too far away, there are plenty of beaches to lounge on, and my dog LOVES to run around there. The trails around the lake are also great for walks with the family. I love to play fetch with my dog at Saylorville. I’ll throw a stick or a ball into the water and he swims out to get it. It’s a great way to keep him cool on hot summer days! I prefer to go during the week, since there are usually less people.” Ms. Farho, an English teacher at Roosevelt stated. Another teacher, Mrs. Beck, who specifically teaches math stated “My family typically visits Lake Ahquabi in Indianola, IA. It’s a nice little escape from Des Moines. We typically spend the day grilling, swimming, and walking the paths around the lake. Sometimes we’ll rent a paddleboat or canoe. Definitely go during the week in the summertime. It’s pretty busy on the weekends.” Lake Ahquabi is another very

popular lake in Iowa. This 115-acre lake is filled with many different attractions. Not only do they have trails all throughout the wooded parts surrounding the lake, but they have very cheap rentals and a decent sized shelter great for parties. They also have a fishing house which has a hole in the center of it and provides shelter from weather and sun while you fish. The trails are best for people who really enjoy hiking. They are a no-wake lake which means very low speeds are the only thing allowed. The beach is perfect size for families and has a rope enclosing how far out you can go. This lake is about 35 minutes away from Roosevelt, on the south edge Indianola. Last on our list is Rathbun Lake. It is located in Appanoose county which is about one hour and 45 minutes south of Des Moines. This lake is prefect for a weekend getaway and even has a resort on the lake! The resort is called Honey Creek and has an indoor water park. It also has a golf course! Honey Creek State Park is attached to Rathbun lake and has both trails and camping! The lake is 26,000

acres which for comparison is about 26,000 football fields. The deepest part of the lake is 50 feet which makes it excellent for fishing. The size and the prevailing winds make Rathbun one of the best places to sail. Rathbun also has a marina where you can rent a boat for the day. “My favorite lake is Rathbun Lake. It’s attached to a resort so there is lots to do including a trampoline on the lake you can go on. There is a beach but most people like to go boating and fishing. It’s best to go there in the summer, that’s when the best stuff is open and there’s lots of people there, which honestly makes it more fun!” Maya Lint, a sophomore stated. So, this summer when you’re trying to figure out what to do with your friends, try one of these lakes out! Grays Lake, Saylorville Lake, Lake Ahquabi and Rathbun Lake all provide many different reasons to stay outside. Don’t forget your hiking boots and bug spray or your flips flops depending on what you’re going to the lake for!

THE CELEBRATION

OF CINCO DE MAYO WRITTEN AND DESIGNED BY ZARAI HERNANDEZ AND STAFF

Cinco de Mayo, the day many Mexicans are out with family or friends celebrating all day. Everyone is dancing, eating, having fun and enjoying the day.

What is Cinco de Mayo? Cinco de Mayo celebrates the Battle of Puebla which was fought on May 5, 1862. It was one of the victories Mexico had during France’s attempt to conquer Mexico. It celebrates Mexican heritage and Mexico’s freedom from France. “It is meaningful because Mexico fought so France couldn’t take the land.” said Roosevelt senior Victor Perez.

It is celebrated all over Mexico and the United States. People celebrate it in many ways such as having parades, mariachi performances, and street festivals. Perez used to live in Osceola, and they would have carnivals to celebrate with bull rides and horse races. Another way Perez says he celebrates is by having family gatherings. “We just party, make food and have pinatas for the kids,” said Perez. “I like it because I feel like it’s a day where all Mexican people come together to celebrate,” said Roosevelt senior Juliana Cervantes.

There are many traditional foods that people usually eat on that day like carne asada (steak) tacos, tamales, enchiladas, quesadillas and gorditas which is a pastry made with masa stuffed with cheese, meat or other fillings. “My favorite foods to eat on Cinco de Mayo are tacos and menudo,” said Perez. Menudo is a Mexican soup made from tripe. Which is a cut of meat from the stomach part of an animal.

Cinco de Mayo is all about traditional things. Something very common you’ll see at parties are candy, sombreros, and serapes, which is the colorful cloth on the table.

Roosevelt Junior Diego Lopez says his favorite food to eat is tacos. Cervantes says her favorite food to eat on that day is “Mexican salads, carne asada and mole”. Mole is a very traditional food in Mexico and is a dark sauce that is either sweet or spicy made from many different ingredients.

This year there was a Cinco de Mayo 5k race in Davenport, Iowa, and was held Saturday May 1 at 9:00 A.M at Ganzo’s Mexican Restaurant. After the race they hosted a party and according to their website it was “one of the largest Cinco de Mayo fiestas in the Midwest”.

Cinco de Mayo is a very significant holiday celebrated in all across Mexico and the United States. There is also a restaurant called 5 de Mayo located here in Des Moines at 5118 SE 14th St. They serve many different types of good, tasty and traditional Mexican foods. Celebrate Mexican history and heritage with friends and family this Cinco de Mayo!

Coca-Cola

Coca-Cola Vs. Pepsi: The Cola competition By Jack Harrington and Staff

“I like Coke with a little bit of lime or lemon, it’s European to me.” -Mr.Dowler

I

n over 100 years of competition, Coca-Cola and Pepsi have become a heated topic of discussion for people all over the world. Roosevelt seems to have a pretty clear opinion on which one the students prefer. Now in 2021, these brands are two of the most iconic and recognizable companies in the world. They also can be the start of many arguments over which one people want to drink more. “Coke is better, it’s just better. Plus, you’re just automatically cooler than people who drink Pepsi.” said Sophomore Ben Jones. Jones with a hot take pushing his opinion across on Pepsi drinkers.

Both companies, which do a lot more than just soda, have estimated net worth’s of over $200 billion. That kind of money means both brands have done very well for a very long time.

relatively big scandal at the time.

“I like Pepsi more. There’s not that big of a difference, but I personally think it tastes better because it has like more flavor to it, it’s not as flat,” said sophomore Sophia Wagler.

Both Pepsi and Coca-Cola are known for their many other types of sodas other than just classic original flavor. They both have diet versions along with all kinds of flavors like cherry, vanilla and so many others. It also seems like every few months they come out with some crazy new flavor that is like a mix of different things, like recently the orange vanilla CocaCola that has actually been pretty popular but is a kind of odd mixture of flavors. Some people even choose to drink their soda’s with peanuts

Pepsi and Coca-Cola both have a lot of haters, too. Many students find Pepsi to be too sugary and other people think Coca-Cola isn’t sweet enough. Two very different kinds of people right there. A few people also have issues with Coca-Cola’s history. Coca-Cola is known for having cocaine in their old recipe was a

“I used to prefer Pepsi, but no, I like Coca-Cola now because it’s not as sweet as Pepsi.” said Roosevelt teacher Mr. Dowler.

Roosevelt overwhelmingly choose Coca-Cola over Pepsi in a recent Instagram poll. CocaCola won 67% to Pepsi’s 33%. In over a century of battle, these two brands have become more recognizable, noticeable and iconic than almost any other brand. Coca-Cola sells over 500 billion bottles per year and Pepsi makes $18 billion in revenue each year, both companies similar in numbers to both figures. Very few brands are more beloved but also argued over by as many people. As for Roosevelt, Coca-Cola is king.

Central Campus If you have been looking

to start your perfect spring garden but don’t know how to begin; The Central Campus Greenhouse is a great match for you. The greenhouse is almost entirely run by students ranging from ninth to twelfth grade, who come from various Des Moines Public High Schools. The greenhouse is open through the month of May and is located just next to McCombs Middle School. This wonderful establishment provides its students with hands on activities, real world experiences, and has amazing plants available for purchase! There are many different

plants to choose from flowers all the way to vegetable plants. The profits made go back into the greenhouse to help continue it in the years to come. The students who partake in the greenhouse are in Central Campus’ Animal Science and Horticulture class and have nothing but good things to say about it. “We do most of the potting and stuff so it’s nice not being in a classroom and getting out into the greenhouse and actually doing hands on work instead of like at normal school” said Ivy Lawson, a junior. The Animal Science and Horticulture course is a very non-traditional class that is not commonly advertised.

Throughout this course students get to learn and have hands on activities with animals and plants. Students spend half of their class time learning everything about plants and the other half is spent learning about the other aspects of the course. Many of the students enjoy the class and recommend it to others. Students who take this course are provided with several advantages and benefits. “We work with both DMACC, ISU, and Kirkwood CC to align our curriculum and college credits awarded to our students. We also offer an internship or apprenticeship program working closely with government agencies and private family

Service with a SMILE: The Importance of Service and Upcoming Outdoor Service Opportunities Written and designed by Grace Smith, staff Service not only helps the growth of a community and strengthens the relationships of those involved, but it can provide an incredibly insightful experience for those who offered their time and effort to volunteer. Helping others and your community provides a sense of gratitude and appreciation that nothing else can. It leaves people with new knowledge and life-skills, not to mention the lasting, positive impact on society. person and given her a new outlook on life and the beauty of service. She credits a lot of her experience to her involvement in Roosevelt clubs. “I think joining Silver Cord is a great way for students to find ways to volunteer and find service opportunities. NHS is also a great way to find cool opportunities that you can do with your peers which I have never experienced before, and it’s really great,” Busick said. Not only does Busick encourage her peers to find opportunities through the clubs at Roosevelt, but so does junior, Mary Kitundu. “I think sometimes it’s really a challenge to know where to start or even get up and do it. A way I get around this is asking around for volunteer opportunities and using the stuff that’s emailed ot me through clubs and through the school,” Kitundu said. Kintundu acknowledged the difficulties that some students face with finding and participating in service opportunities. Some students may not know how to find these opportunities, and some may not necessarily want to take the time

Upcoming Outdoor Service Opportunities

1. Skate Park volunteering during the Dew Tour (May 20th-23rd) 2. Volunteering at the High School Girl’s State Soccer tournament(June 8th-11th) 3. Volunteer at the Des Moines Ironman Race (June 17th-23rd) 4. Volunteering at the High School Girl’s State Soccer tournament-June 8th-11th

out of their day to help. Kitundu admits that sometimes it may feel like a job or a task that needs to get done but it is important to remember that it is giving back to the community and to those who are less fortunate. Kitundu also provided some insight on upcoming outdoor opportunities for people to consider. “The state soccer tournaments are coming up and that is a great way to give back to the community and a great chance to watch soccer. And I believe the botanical garden is also looking for volunteers,” said Kitundu.

“I think we encourage students to volunteer by giving them multiple options for volunteer opportunities on the canvas page and continuously send out canvas announcements and Instagram posts about opportunities. This is the first year we’ve really used both of those options to get information out and it has been highly successful”, said NHS faculty advisor Casey Dunley. Dunley oversees NHS as well as represents environmental club, CORE, and Young Feminists Club. She is highly involved in the school and is constantly

overseeing service projects in and around the community. She encourages students to stay up to date on announcements and social media posts in order to find service opportunities in the community. She also believes that outdoor service work is a great way to uplift the community and others around you. “I think normally outdoor service work is beneficial for students because it gives them a chance to be outdoors and doing service for the community is both uplifting and affirming for students,” Dunley said. Participating in service opportunities in the upcoming months is not only a great way to get outside and enjoy the weather, but a great way to give back to the community. Gain knowledge from new experiences, volunteer with friends, help the environment and people within the community. Be sure to join clubs that give you many volunteer opportunities such as NHS or Silver Cord. Happy Volunteering!
