UP GPs Executive Committee '22-'23

In a significant development, the UP Gears and Pinions has revised its constitution during the second semester of school year 2022-2023

Consti Revised, Plebiscite Approves Changes Grieves Back and FW, Launched to Empower Transparency and Voices

The revisions, made by the Executive Committee, were recently approved through a plebiscite held by the Organizing Body. The decision to revise the constitution was prompted by the previous term's recommendation to address potential errors or deficiencies present in the constitution’s initial publication Originally drafted in the academic year 2020-2021 and published last term, the constitution underwent scrutiny as part of a "test run" to identify any shortcomings

Key amendments include the introduction of a probationary status for ineligible members, who did not

qualify for the membership or subject to certain conditions and the formation of an Ethics Committee to handle matters related to probationary members, impeachment, and expulsion ensuring a transparent process for dealing with disciplinary actions within the organization. Additionally, the revised constitution outlines procedures for special elections and appointments within the Executive Committee aiming for a wider involvement of the organization's members

The revised constitution will serve as a new chapter, a better framework that addresses potential shortcomings but still remains committed to its mission and looks forward to continue its growth and success on its future endeavors

UP GPs Achieves University-Level Recognition

The UP Gears and Pinions, a premier mechanical engineering student organization in the University of the Philippines Diliman, has recently attained university-level recognition through the Office of Student Projects and Activities during the second semester of the school year 20222023 This marks a significant milestone, boosting the organization's credibility for future collaborations with companies and external partners.

The recognition serves as a noteworthy event since it is the first time in a considerable period, if not

ever, that the organization has received such distinction at the university level which demonstrates the organization's commitment to expand excellence and camaraderie and positions it as a respected entity within a wider academic community UP Gears and Pinions aims to leverage this achievement to expand its network, attract industry collaborations, and provide enhanced opportunities for its members. The recognition serves as a testament to the organization's dedication and sets the stage for continued growth and success

In an effort to foster openness and anonymous expression, the UP Gears and Pinions Executive Committee has launched two initiatives: the Grievance Form, known as "GPs Grieves Back," and the Freedom Wall.

The Grievance Form, established in the first semester through Google Forms, offers a confidential platform for members to share concerns directly with the committee It allows members to raise grievances without fear of repercussions By providing this channel, the committee hopes to trust along with the members and address certain issues viable to change

During the second semester, the Freedom Wall was introduced in the FB group as a space for members’ anonymous sharing of thoughts and insights With proper monitoring, this medium will help members to express themselves enabling a range of perspectives to emerge The ExeComm reviews submissions from both platforms, taking necessary actions to address raised issues

By embracing these initiatives, the UP GPs set a new standard for org transparency and engagement, fostering a culture that embraces diverse opinions and collective voices

mission

Our mission is to pursue the highest degree of competence in Mechanical Engineering and its affiliated branches, for the advancement of technology, and for the benefit of mankind It is also to imbue on its members the importance of camaraderie, loyalty, and discipline, to succeed in our chosen profession We aim to work for a total education to be a worthwhile member of the GPs

history

It all began with a great idea from the mechanical engineering students of class '56 These men envisioned an organization that would promote camaraderie and unity among mechanical engineering majors while also fostering academic excellence

In 1955, UP Gears and Pinions was founded as a platform for social and co-curricular activities, providing a balance to the rigorous demands of the course

Throughout the years, the organization has undertaken various projects that benefit its members, the college, and the community

One notable event in the past was RevUP!: The Diliman Motorshow, where car enthusiasts showcased their automobiles and maintenance skills Another initiative was the Great Cover UP, which involved various organizations in re-covering worn-out books from the engineering library In recent years, the organization has continued to expand its endeavors One of these initiatives is PETIKS, a bonding program designed for freshies, shiftees, and transferees in the BS ME program Additionally, GPs Gives Back has become an annual charity event, benefiting orphanages, DME staff, and the Engineering library These initiatives demonstrate the members' diverse capabilities beyond academic challenges, making them well-rounded individuals poised to become versatile engineers of the future
