Pre’s Rock Memorial Сontest project (honorable mention) I Eugene, U.S.A. I 2020 Team: Dmytro Shmatenko, Alina Nemolovska

On May 30.1975 Olympian Steve Prefontaine crashed his MG convertible into a rock outcropping and could not be freed in time to save his life. The location of the crash, known as Pre’s Rock, has been a site of pilgrimage since his death. Many visitors mark their visit to Pre’s Rock by leaving personal items.

The City of Eugene collects the personal letters, medals, uniforms, bib numbers and other items regularly. The Rock, itself can be hard to find in Eugene’s Laurel Hill neighborhood but the site’s hilltop location gives it a commanding view of Willammette Valley north of Eugene, Oregon. The primary task was to make this place more remarkable, while balancing the site’s dueling public and residential scales.

1. The main aim of the planning was to separate the pedestrian paths from the road. The stairs allow a person to make a circular detour around the memorial, thereby creating a walking area.

2. The triangular platform is located in a place free of large trees near Pre's Rock. Extending the platform beyond the tree crowns makes it visible from the surrounding area and, in turn, opens up a panoramic view from the platform.

3. The wide entrance to the platform makes it visible and accessible. At the same time, the platform's narrwoing endpoint becomes a place of solitude.

The asymmetry of the platform forms a pleasant connection with Pre’s Rock, while the platform distances itself from the Rock without overhanging it.

Additionally, an inflatable sphere with a mirrored gold surface can mark Pre's Rock during major athletic events, becoming a symbolic embodiment of the guiding star.

The Wall of Remembrance is a place where people can express their feelings. The relief and imperfection of the surface make manipulations easy, without fear of messing up : attach objects, create reliefs, write, engrave, make mosaics. With time, some artifacts will fade into the background or will be removed, and new layers will appear. Pre's Rock is the reflection of today's feelings, while the Wall of Remembrance - their archive.

The design site is located in a village, which was founded at the beginning of the last century among a young forest that has survived to our time.

This small square used to be a pedestrian hub in front of the movie theater, but now it is in bad condition. Today it is used for spontaneous parking and pedestrian transit.

As a result of an initiative by local businesses to rehabilitate the movie theater and children's cafe, there was a need to restore the square. The variety of planned and existing functions, combined with comfortable urban space, can make this place one of the main centers of public activity in the town.

In summer, the beaches around Toronto are full of life, which is not the same in the cold season. The organizers of the competition propose to correct this situation and build temporary installations on the theme "Beyond the Five Senses".

The Horizon is the line beyond which there is only suspense, same as beyond the human sences.

The endless road that goes beyond the horizon, embodies our desire to expand the boundaries of perception. Actually, it is nothing but a multiple reflection. It doesn't exist, just as the psychological ability to cross the line of our senses does not exist at the moment.

Competitive design of the square on the site of the former airfield, founded in 1915.

The site is located in the microdistrict where many former aviators live. The proposal to redesign the square was submitted by the Volyn Shield NGO and the Volyn aircraft amateurs’ organization.

1. Demand for well-organized public space The space is not attractive to pedestrians and is underutilized.

2. Transit Pedestrian transit is the basic function of the square, due to its location. Large objects, which create obstacles for pedestrian traffic, are to be dismantled in that square.

3. Zoning The memorial area is located in the central part of the square, at the intersection of pedestrian routes. The quiet zone is not crossed by transit pedestrian paths. The shrubbery makes this area more chamber-like, prevents the spreading of noise from cars, and regulates pedestrian traffic.

4. Erasing the border between the square and the library This will expand the library's functions and increase its popularity. As a result, the library can become a kind of square operator.

5. New trees Small trees bring back a human scale to the square.

6. Illumination Roadways take most of the perimeter of the square and spread the scattered light. Moderate floodlighting of tree crowns and elements of the memorial will allow to sufficiently illuminate the square.

About 30 years ago, a memorial stone was erected on the project area, with stated these words on it: "The monument will be built to the pilot KK Arceulov." Decades later, the monument has never been erected. However, the memorial stone became one of the arguments that prompted the creation of the Aviators Square on this site, and saved it from being scratched for new building development. Thus, it has already become part of the history of this place, although not quite as it was supposed during installation. This motivates to preserve it and as part of the new memorial.

A new metal tablet with the short history of Volyn aviation indicated on it is attached to the memorial stone with indents. That way, it does not hide the information indicated on the stone, but only takes it into the background, like a layer of history that has came to its logical conclusion.

The metal construction of the new memorial starts from the memorial stone and turns around the central part of the square, representing a kind of history trajectory, on which plates with information about the personalities and events in the history of Volyn aviation are placed in chronological order. While reading the plates, a person sees the skies reflected by metal, which makes the planes on the memorial look as if they're flying. The letters in the text are cut all the way through, so one may see the sky through them as well.

The project site is located in the center of Riga, in a dense residential area. This caused a lot of urban planning restrictions.

As a result the site was empty for a long time and functioned as a parking lot.

The task was to develop the simplest possible solution, observing the regulatory restrictions.

This neighbourhood appeared in the late XIX century as a residential area that had hardly any shops or commercial facilities.

Housing used to be the dominant function here. However, in the early 1990s the place became increasingly attractive for retail, so it gradually turned into a space for a totally new type of economy. The revolution happened when the booming IT industry came into play. All those changes set a new agenda for the architecture among other things as well.

Along its perimeter, the building has a strong connection with the surrounding urban context and everything it has to offer. There is a military school nearby with a parade deck that we partially flank.

Across the street, there are offices and apartment blocks.

The pyramid shape and the terraces gave us a way to adapt to the scale of the neighbouring houses and find a compromise in terms of lighting both for the neighbours and the new building we propose. Utilising the trapezoid form was the key moment here.

The use of terraces is a unique feature of the design. Each floor has its own “outside” space that can be used for working and organizing meetings.

Before designing, we thoroughly analyzed the current pedestrian traffic and potential connections that are likely to encourage the development of the canal to the west of the plot. This allowed us to find the most appropriate location for the school.

There is a recreational space in the western part of the project site. Sports grounds are located in the north and the area reserved for future territorial development extends to the south of them.

To preserve the scale, all the premises are distributed across the four levels of the school. The central axis connects the entrance, the main atrium, and the gym. The skylight faces the north and invites soft daylight into the school passages.

The eastern and western facades are made of prefabricated elements. The U-shape allows classrooms to have access to balconies and protects them from aggressive direct sunlight. The spacing of vertical facade elements of the western facade follows this principle too, as they protect classrooms from direct sunlight in the afternoon. The same approach is used in the northern facade as well.

The gym with an individual entrance has transparent walls that bring daylight into the passages. On the ground floor there are administrative offices and rooms available for rent. Classrooms are located on the other three levels along the perimeter of the building.
