mixing of cultures through inclusive conversation

facade sketch

Stairs

the essence of the u.s. lies in the mixing of different cultures, creating its' unique identity. my project aims to celebrate this and further kindle the mixing of cultures through inclusive conversation. the vertical scheme has a minimal footprint consisting of 11 offset floors with an atrium. this creates an environment in which conversation flows throughout the building and creates a visual connection without segregating floors visually or audibly. the program is hierarchically organized from bottom to top based on the time spent by the occupant, signifying their progress toward integration into american society. the horizontal scheme consists of a park that acts as a transition from the city grid to the building. the park paths address hotspots in the site context, letting people walk into the site from different entries. this is done to nurture a more inclusive environment that lets both immigrants and non-immigrants make use of the park. the parking is pushed underground to relate to the users' context and reduce local heat gain. in an urban context, most immigrants don't have a car, so it is tucked away to better address the site context and challenge the adjacent zoning norms. the facade of the building is derived from the interaction between floors and is manipulated to reduce solar gain on the south side, while opening up to the stairs on the north side.

sustaining joey ramone's punk influence fall'22

11/22 to 12/'22

this project's assignment was to create a stair in the upper east side in new york city, going from street level down to central park. these stairs had to engrave qualities of a musician. i chose joey ramone of the ramones, being that he grew up in low income public housing, i wanted to reflect his rebellious, punk-pioneer attitude. as though joey knows where he is, he "flips off" the upper class, whilst "pointing" to different parts of the site with the path of his stair. the premise of the project was to give a last "screw you" to the rich and make a statement about the socio-economics happening in his city. the stairs compress and become gritty and over-stimulating, which mimics cbgb, his go-to venue in the lower east side.

treehold light rail station

bringing equilibrium concept development

curve derivative

this project's assignment was to create a light rail station in freehold, nj. my concept was the establishment of equilibrium between the different demographics of freehold. the broadest demographic was between freehold borough and freehold township. the borough is a historic, human-centric walkable downtown, meanwhile the township is contemporary car-centric community. the second biggest demographic related to the site, with freehold's downtown on the northern side of the site, and freehold township's suburban development on the south side. the smallest demographic i took into consideration was that between blue and white collar workers. my building form started with derivation of a curve from the approach and exit of the rail line, and flipping it onto itself to relate to the notion of equilibrium in physics, where two waves that are equal but opposite to cancel each other out. i used the intersection of the curves to define programmatic "thirds", manipulating the form to fit the program & site context.

conceptual sketches

educational outreach is a GED and extracurricular educational space for people experienching homelessness. the concept of "educational outreach" is about the building reaching out and becoming a part of its community. it features a number of educational spaces for both GED and elective courses. It also houses temporary single and family housing units to let users focus on their learning. the atrium space intends to mimic the connections that happen in at the crossing of passyunk avenue and mifflin st vertically rather than horizontally, creating a visual connection between the users and the neighborhood they're learning in. the materaility extenuates the movement and activity happening within, aiming to represent people inside as organics moving through the space. the "parasite" and parametric building language causes incongruity in the user, which sparks curiosity within building and nearby residents. making it more than just a school.

the assignment of this project was to assess our given site conditions and draft an appropriate foundational system. our site mimicked a beach and was relatively flat, with a gradual change in grade of 6" along the length of the short side. the water table reached 2' below grade, and the bearing capacity was very poor because of sandy site conditions. the flood line reached 6' above grade, and the first floor needed to be 2' above that. because of these site conditions, i chose to do a driven wood piling system with bolted grade beams above grade. the wood pilings are sunk in 4'-6" with a concrete infill.

the assignment of this project was to create a detailed wall section. the wall section had to include a ground-floor/foundation connection, window sill/headers, as well as second-floor connections. my wall section consisted of a brick veneer curtain wall connected to a cmu backup wall. my foundation system was a concrete spread footing and foundation wall connected to the cmu wall with rebar. and my second floor was a welded steel connection, with a corrugated steel/concrete infill on top of a steel beam. my section also has flashing and rigid insulation.

this project's assignemnt was to create a dormitory for architecture students. during our research, i found that the communal/public spaces of a dorm were often dark and unwelcoming. my building sought to emphasize the public and private building programs, with the "private" &"public" sector using different proportioning systems and materiality to heterogenously combine them. the studio/game room space soughts to imitate the studio space students are familiar with, being able to relax and work in the same space while being acoustically seperated. the resident director's apartment is split between the two residental floors with an internal spiral stair to alleviate hieracrhy between student and administration. the resulting building aesthetics allow for the "private" sector to respond to the residental row homes, while letting the "public" sector respond to danzinger's deconstructivism, with the curve being derived from the change in grade adjacent to the site.

the assignment of this project was to create a day care, my concept being a nieghborhood within a neighborhood. thought that the connection between kids in the neighborhood, playing in the street, in their front yards, or in the playground was a strong feeling that i wanted to emulate. my floorplan sought to mimic a "neighborhood within a neighborhood", with hallways and classrooms surrounding the central multi-purpose room and playground. since a neighborhood isn't segregated by age, my building seeks to unify the children so they're able to learn from each other and not just in the classrooms, which leads to a more open floorplan. the second floor is offset 4' in order to create a stronger visual and audible connection with the ground floor and first floor. the building is also heavily sectioned off with vegetation for privacy and security. the materiality and sculpting of the building is made to look like a single family home. because of the concept and macro-context, i thought it was important to emulate the surroundings in order to create a stronger connection. this creates a more seamless connection between the micro neighborhood, the day care, and the macro neighborhood, red bank, nj.

film photography

exploring new mediums

all shot on a yashica fx-3 super 2000 from june to august 2023

this past summer i was going through a rough point in my life. feeling burnt out from the spring semester, and going through things in my personal life. after years of hesitation, i decided to pick up film photography as a new hobby. i felt that the mechanical attributes of a vintage camera, the limit of photos you can take on a single roll of film, as well as the physical process itself really changed the way i took photos. i had to take each photo with the "perfect" composition. as a result these photos come out with more intent and emotion, compared with snapping it on your iphone. i feel that photography can also translate well into architecture. helping with capturing things like site context or project renders.

screen printing

exploring new mediums

when i was in highschool, i would get out to new york to hangout out with my friends. seeing graffiti on every empty wall, bridge, even a truck, naturally i grew acustomed to it. after years of financial hesitation, i decided to explore screen printing. the tag name i chose freshman year of high school was "shima", which is japanese for island. i believe that throughout all of our experiences, yet painful, helps us grow our "island" bigger and more lucious than before.

i took my tag name and character, and screenprinted on upcycled clothing. i think it more authentically carries over the notions of graffiti onto a new medium, rather than just a blank t-shirt. graffiti at it's core is about writing over someone else's work, whether that be someone else's tag or a blank wall. the shirt's maintain their individuality, while also being my new canvas.

experimentation is important to any student, and exploring new mediums opens your perspectives
