Episcopal Greeting
We extend our warmest greetings, filled with the joy of Jesus and a spirit of anticipation, as we embark on the 5th Episcopal District Planning meeting and the work that lies ahead. Having had the privilege of meeting many of you in person, sharing laughter, tears, and experiencing the Holy Spirit's movements together, our hearts are truly gladdened.
Mental Health, Music, and Mission
Inspired by Acts 16:25-26, our theme of Mental Health, Music, and Mission has blossomed in unexpected ways:
Spiritual Clinical Healing: Chaplain Addison's teachings have opened our hearts and minds to new perspectives on spiritual and clinical healing.
Mental Health Ambassadors: We've discovered the wealth of human resources within the 5th District as we develop this crucial program.
Safe Spaces: We recognize the immediate need to create environments conducive to our own spiritual and clinical healing.
We have only just begun to sing together. As we intentionally unite in song and prayer as an Episcopal District, we eagerly anticipate God's transformative power breaking unknown chains and shifting atmospheres through our collective presence.
Facing Challenges Together
We've confronted difficult realities regarding shrinking memberships and neglected infrastructures, fickle insurance companies and an ever-changing climate. However, God has used these challenges to sharpen our Mission:
Mission Possible: Initial board meetings have commenced, with timelines set to address these issues collaboratively, utilizing our best internal resources.
Mission Possible Metaverse: We're excited to announce the official launch of Mission Possible Metaverse Mission in the Missouri Annual Conference. Under the leadership of Rev. Roger Richardson, Ph.D., this initiative will explore what it means to be an AME Church in the digital realm.
Standing Strong in Faith
As we approach a critical juncture in U.S. history with the upcoming presidential election, our faith remains firmly rooted in Jesus Christ of Nazareth. We stand ready to make a difference through our VOTES in every election. Let our prayers and songs propel us to victory in every battle we must fight with our hands and feet!
Perfect submission, perfect delight, Visions of rapture now burst on my sight; Angels descending, bring from above, Echoes of mercy, whispers of love. Blessed Assurance, Jesus is mine!

PRESIDING PRELATE, 5th EPISCOPAL DISTRICT AMEC
22 Churches | 5 States
Greeting from the Presiding Elder
Greetings Mountain Valley District!
Six months ago, we voted as a conference to combine the two presiding elder districts of the Desert Mountain Conference into one district, which we called the Mountain Valley District. As we embarked on this journey, we found that it indeed is steeped in mountains and valleys, extreme highs and lows as we sought to execute the vision that all would sense that God is up to something new, big, and wonderful in and for the Desert Mountain Conference. The initial excitement was quickly tested by the number of challenges and opposition that were presented from without and within. And yet, God was faithful!
Our vision remains simple yet powerful: to work together as a unified team, leveraging our collective strengths, talents, and resources to further the mission of spreading God's love and grace. By embracing a team leadership approach, we can amplify our impact, foster a spirit of cooperation, and inspire one another to reach new heights of service and ministry.
As we come together for this District Conference, I desire that the agenda curated with you in mind will create space for the Spirit to move in and through all who attend, whether in-person or virtually. The intention set for our time together can be organized into five pillars:
They are:
1. Connections – we are not alone in the work we do, there are no silos. Taking the time to get to know each other will build community and allow greater synergy in ministry efforts and initiatives. We win when we are connected to God and each other.
2. Trust – we build a community of trust where collaboration flourishes and competition rooted in distrust is eliminated, providing increased support and encouragement for all members of our district. We win when we trust God and each other space to grow with grace.
3. Hope – the work we do makes a difference. As people return to the Church, the hope we steward will allow them to find space to believe again. We win when we place our hope in God.
4. Possibilities – Do we still believe that all things are possible? As we face untenable situations in our churches, homes, and communities, it will be crucial that we ascend to the realm of possibilities and draw strength, courage, creativity, and resolve to keep pressing forward. We win when we don’t give up.
5. Self-care. The efficiency and effectiveness of our ministry must be balanced with self-care. in achieving our shared goals. So enjoy the process. Have Fun!
Please know that I see you. You matter. Your presence is not taken for granted. As a vital member of this district, I invite you to lean in with confidence, knowing that we are ministry partners and together we make a difference!
Here’s to an amazing year!

Compare and Contrast
Creating a deferred compensation package utilizing cash value life insurance called Indexed Universal Life Insurance (IUL)
IULs allow cash value within the policy to grow tax-free overtime. IULs are funded with post-tax dollars which allow clients to withdraw money tax-free at any age
One of the main advantages of IULs is that the cash value is protected from drops in the market. An lUL is a cash value policy that has both a death benefit and saving portion.
There are no Restrictions on when the money can be taken out, unlike an IRA. Also, the money inside an IUL can be taken out at any age by the client tax free and without extra fees

Understanding Boundaries for Healthy Ministry
Why Boundaries Matter
• Boundaries are essential for preventing burnout and maintaining emotional, spiritual, and physical health.
• Without boundaries, ministry leaders risk being overwhelmed by the demands of others, leaving little time for self-care and personal well-being.
• Boundaries help you create a sustainable pace in ministry, ensuring long-term effectiveness.
Setting Boundaries in Ministry
Recognize Your Limits
• Understand your emotional, physical, and spiritual capacity.
• Set realistic expectations for yourself and communicate them clearly to others.
Practical Tips
• Schedule personal time and make it non-negotiable.
• Say “no” to requests that compromise your well-being or priorities.
• Delegate responsibilities and trust others to help.
The Impact of Healthy Boundaries on Self-Care
• Spiritual Health
Boundaries protect your time for personal prayer, study, and reflection.
• Emotional Well - Being
Setting limits fosters emotional stability, reducing stress and anxiety.
• Relational Health
Boundaries strengthen relationships with family, colleagues, and the congregation by creating respect for your time and needs.
Biblical Foundation for Boundaries
• Mark 1:35 - Time Alone
• John 6:15 - Jesus Withdrew from the crowd
• Proverbs 4:23 - "Above all else, guard your heart...“
• Matthew 18:15 - 17 - Confrontation and accountability.
Reflection Questions
• Where do I need stronger boundaries?
• What’s stopping me from setting them?
• How can I respond when boundaries are ignored?
Closing Thought
Boundaries are NOT selfish, they are the structure of HEALTHY love.
Boundaries Summary
fourminutebooks.com
1-Sentence-Summary: Boundaries explains, with the help of modern psychology and Christian ideals, how to improve your mental health and personal growth by establishing guidelines for self-care that include saying no more often and standing firm in your decisions rather than letting people walk all over you.

Favorite quote from the author:
A day without boundaries looks something like this: You wake up early to make breakfast for your kids. Even though you’re doing a presentation at work that you really need to prepare before leaving, you still don’t ask your husband to help you cook for the kids.
Once you get to work, the presentation equipment isn’t ready, so you go get it yourself, even though it’s not your job. Your boss asks you to run the Christmas party, and you agree, even though you’re probably too busy. And your day is just getting started! If any of this sounds familiar, you could probably use boundaries. Life without them can be draining!
Boundaries: When to Say Yes, How to Say No to Take Control of Your Life by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend is a classic guide on setting healthy boundaries and finally taking the reigns in your own life. Using both Christian faith and contemporary psychology, the authors create a strong argument for why healthy boundaries are essential for your emotional and spiritual health.
Here are the 3 of the most helpful lessons this book taught me:
1. Boundaries are all about kindness to yourself and others.
2. It won’t be quick or easy, but setting boundaries is always worth it.
3. Boundaries will help you in both your personal and professional life.
Let’s get right into these ideas and learn how to take better care of ourselves!
Lesson 1: It is an act of kindness to yourself and those around you to set boundaries.
From concrete walls to “No Trespassing” signs, we find physical boundaries all around us. Usually, these exist for a good reason. A tall chainlink fence around an electrical plant is there to protect us from walking inadvertently into a dangerous area.
Personal boundaries are likewise necessary for protecting your emotions and spirit. But unlike physical boundaries, others can’t always see them. This makes it hard to establish boundaries and to recognize the boundaries of others. It also is hard to enforce them because it can make you feel mean. But it shouldn’t.
Setting boundaries entails taking ownership of your own wants, needs, and feelings. It means prioritizing you, but often people feel like it means they are neglecting others. But the authors emphasize that setting up healthy boundaries doesn’t mean you don’t care about other people’s concerns or problems. All it means is that you aren’t solely responsible for them.
Take the O’Riley family. Unfortunately, their son Peter has gotten involved with drugs and was expelled from school. His parents could take responsibility for his problems by enrolling him in a new school and paying his fines, but it’s likely this isn’t going to solve the problem. In this case, his parents would shoulder the whole problem for him.
On the other hand, they could hand the responsibility to their son instead. They could listen and support him in becoming sober and do all this without stepping in to fix his problems. In this case, they are taking care of themselves by establishing boundaries and still taking care of Peter. Setting boundaries like this is an act of kindness to yourself as well as to everyone around you.
Lesson 2: It can be hard to set up boundaries, but it will make your life much better.
Before you are comfortable enough to assert boundaries, you might make excuses for other people violating your boundaries. You might say stuff like, “Jeff always puts me down when he’s with his friends. He’s only joking, though.” But over time, you start to get resentful. This resentment can be a good thing! If it means you’re done being complacent about boundary violations, so pay attention!
This will be your first step to healthy boundaries. But it won’t be easy. When you try to set boundaries with a controller or manipulator, they are set on using you and won’t let you say no. Their insistence on using you can be addictive for you because it makes you feel needed. Friends who don’t make a fuss if you can’t make it to lunch won’t give you the same high. But this is the time to seek out these types of friends.
Next, learn how to love and value yourself. When our boundaries are constantly being violated, we start to treat ourselves like these people treat us. We can’t use our thoughts, feelings, talents, and bodies like God intended us to. If we can’t love these things in ourselves, we will have a hard time loving these things others. This is why finding value in yourself is key to creating and recognizing healthy boundaries.
After that, you can start setting small boundaries like telling your partner you don’t want to be left with taking out the garbage all the time or accepting your friend’s offer to bring a dish to your party. Ultimately, you’ll find out that you enjoy having your new healthy boundaries and the peace they can bring to your life.
Lesson 3: Boundaries are essential in both your personal life and your work life.
It’s important to establish, maintain, and respect boundaries within a marriage. The authors say it is the key to a fulfilling romantic relationship and is something couples should work on together. It’s also important in friendships, where it can be harder for people to assert their boundaries.
Many times there are friendships with a compliant person and a controller. An example of this is that friend that wants you to cancel all of your plans to spend time with them. In situations like this, one person walks all over the other, and both are left unhappy. Being a natural compliant or controller isn’t necessarily bad, but you need boundaries to make sure the friendship stays within the bounds it should.
It’s also equally important to assert boundaries at work as it is in your personal life. Many people find it hard to say no in a professional setting. But just because you are clocked in doesn’t mean your boundaries have disappeared.
You might be the type that steps in and takes responsibility for your colleague’s poor performance. If this is you, it’s time to step back and only take responsibility for your own tasks and let them figure it out.
You might also be an overworker, but often this is the fault of a boss who doesn’t know how to allocate work. Don’t take responsibility for this problem if it’s not yours!
At the end of the day, remember that you need to create a boundary that separates your work and home. Stress from work should be left at work, and stress from home should be left at home. Of course, you’ll always have things you need to do. But if you never say no to work, you’re probably missing out on the things that make life worth living.
Boundaries Review
Boundaries is really eye-opening. It makes you realize that you need to lay down some boundaries for your own health and that you shouldn’t feel guilty about doing so! It also helps you recognize other people’s boundaries and hopefully become a better person for that, which the world could use a lot more.
Who would I recommend the Boundaries summary to?
The 47-year-old who always feels mentally drained and isn’t sure why, the 29-year-old that lets people walk all over them, and anyone who wants to discover a crucial component of selfcare.
THE BI - VOCATIONAL PASTOR AND CONGREGATION
A Growing Reality:
Creating a Partnership for Ministry Sustainability
Presented to Mountain Valley District Conference April 4, 2025
Elder Sheriolyn Hodge
WHAT IS BI - VOCATIONAL MINISTRY?
• Bi-vocational ministry refers to a model of church leadership where a pastor or minister holds two jobs: one as a church leader and another in a secular profession. This arrangement allows the pastor to fulfill their pastoral duties while also earning income from a separate job outside the church.
• SUCCESS is often tied to effective time management, strong communication between the pastor and lay leaders, and the willingness of both the pastor and the congregation to adapt to this model.
Presiding
Rev. Gerald Richard, Esq.
INCREASE IN BI - VOCATIONAL PASTORS
• Over the last 5-10 years there has been a notable increase in the number of bi-vocational pastors in the U.S.
• Factors:
• Declining church attendance
• Financial constraints within the congregation
• Changing landscape of church leadership
KEY POINTS REGARDING STATISTICS AND TRENDS
1. 2020 National Congregations Study – 25% of pastors were bivocational, compared to around 10% a decade earlier.
2. Many smaller congregations have increasingly turned to bivocational pastors as a means of financial sustainability.
3. Younger pastors are more likely to embrace bi-vocational ministry as they seek to balance work-life realities.
4. Various denominations have reported growing numbers of bivocational pastors are needed to supply churches in transition.
5. Future projections suggest that new pastors entering ministry may embrace a bi-vocational model as a viable option to fulfill a Call to Ministry and have economic stability.
TRANSITION TO BI - VOCATIONAL PASTORATE
• Bi-vocational pastors will have limited availability due to their commitment to a second job.
• The stress of balancing two roles can impact leadership relationships.
• Salary and compensation adjustments may be necessary to reflect the bivocational nature of the pastorate.
• Church programs and events may need to be adjusted to accommodate the pastor’s schedule, or the pastor may miss some events.
• The success of a bi-vocational pastorate hinges on mutual understanding, support, and open communication between the pastor and the congregation.
BENEFITS OF BI - VOCATIONAL PASTORATE
• Diverse skill sets
• Increased Community Engagement
• Financial Flexibility
• Encouragement of Lay Leadership
• Broader Perspectives
• Enhanced Relatability
• Resourcefulness
• Increased Accountability
• Sustainability for Smaller Churches
• Flexibility in Ministry Activities
While there are challenges associated with bi - vocational ministry, the benefits can lead to a more dynamic, engaged, and resourceful church community.
CONSIDERATIONS OF BI - VOCATIONAL PASTORATE
• PASTOR
• Time Management
• Availability
• Compensation and Benefits
• Self-Care
• Continuous Learning
• Feedback Mechanisms
• CONGREGATION
• Understanding the Role
• Communication
• Engagement in Ministry
• Support and Encouragement
• Salary and Compensation

About Our Church
1. What is the Church’s Theme for this year? Rebuild, Trust, Unity with the Community.
2. How has the theme been incorporated by the Church’s organizations?
As a church in the process of finding solid grounding, we continue to work toward implementing our theme through all organizations We started our rebuilding process with our annual Harvest
Rally celebration. This program unites the members with each other as we prepare for our winter season which included a fellowship dinner immediately following the Sunday worship service. The Lay organization once again sponsored a church activity to help rebuild our relationships with the members by attending the Martin L. King, Jr. Black Rodeo in January. We incorporated the community with our 16th annual Afternoon Coffee with the Authors sponsored by the Young People’s Department under the missionary society. We invited the community to come into our building as we host local authors The usher board continues to support the church financially with their annual fundraiser from the Shades of Color catalogue. Our food bank provided support to the community with gift cards to local grocery stores for people in need during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons and the missionary society provided cheer baskets to our elderly and sick and shut-in members of the church. About Our Church
1. What is the Church’s Theme for this year? We have embraced/publicized the 5th district theme of: Mental Health, Music, & Missions and each organization has incorporated Mt. Moriah’s goal to be “On Assignment to Win, Deepen, & Sustain Souls for Christ”. We are On a Mission for the Lord.
2. How has the theme been incorporated by the Church’s organizations? Some of the ways the theme has been incorporated is with our Sons of Allen mentoring/tutoring program for young men; the YPD youth explosion providing bible based instructional experience, while allowing the youth to discuss things like peer pressure, suicide, or being ostracized for being
different. The Lay organization are on a mission by providing some of the needs of community, such as school supplies, and our weekly prayer line to intercede for those that would like prayer. Our shepherd Pastor Jackson feeds us with sermon subjects like “For Such a Time as This” emphasizing to move deeper in your assignment from the Lord by fasting; “You Are the Watchman/Watchwoman”, to understand we are to be at our post, and recognize that God expects us to speak on His behalf.
3. How has the Church aligned with the 5th District Theme of Mental Health, Music, and Mission?
Mental Health: We have one of our members assigned as an Ambassador on the Bishops mental health team and we are anticipating the programs that they are developing.
Music: We incorporate music in all of our worship services, and on Sunday mornings we have 15 minutes of praise and worship. We also occasionally have praise dance or liturgical dancers perform. I believe music is just as important to service as the sermon, its another way of ministering.
Mission: We are intentional about befriending those who do not follow Jesus, with love, actively sharing the good news. Engaging in volunteer work in the community, going outside the walls of Mt. Moriah, being a light in this dark world and bold enough to not hide when the ugliness prevails. Letting our light shine by living with joy, peace, love, faithfulness, kindness, and self control. This is our intent and belief.
4. Describe the worship experience at the Church? The worship experience at Mt. Moriah is very lively, spirit filled, down home environment, welcoming and bible lead. We allow the Holy Spirit to have its way, and we love on everyone who attends.
5. What is your overall opinion of the Church and its work? My opinion of Mt. Moriah is we are on fire for the Lord, looking forward to being fed, growing spiritually as well as physically. We have filled our church walls and looking forward to phase 2 where we can reach more sheep to get that same spiritual food we are receiving.

About Our Church
1. What is the Church’s Theme for this year? BACK TO THE BASICS: INCORPORATING JESUS, JUSTICE, AND JOY FOR A HURTING COMMUNITY (Reference Scripture: Micah 6:1-8)
2. How has the theme been incorporated by the Church’s organizations?
Combining and incorporating both our church theme and Bishop Francine Brookins’ quadrennial theme, we have shifted our focus to ensure that we, as Owen Chapel, go and
serve the least, the less, and the lost while being integral parts of the justice system to ensure fair and equitable “blind justice” is truly lived up to, holding county assistant district attorneys accountable for mishandling cases in court through jury service, to fighting for justice of a 17-year-old teenager shot and killed by deputy sheriff while walking back to his reservation. In addition, the Women’s Missionary Society assisted three families in getting both the basic necessities as well as extra toys and clothing during the Christmas holiday season. Finally, ensured 100 percent participation in several aspects of the 2024 Primary and General Election season, ensuring that voter suppression did not occur at any of the polling locations, ballots tabulated correctly, and timely audits were completed with 100 percent accuracy.
We look forward to seeing what the 2nd half of the 2024-2025 conference year brings to us as together, under the leadership of the dynamic duo of Pastor Eve and Rev. Michael, we continue to march forward, letting nothing stop us as we continue to walk by faith and not by sight.
3. How has the Church aligned with the 5th District Theme of Mental Health, Music, and Mission?
Mental Health: Although Owen Chapel continues to strengthen its areas of ministry, we have yet to make accomplishments in the area of mental health at the time of this report.
Music: (1) Reintroduction of hymns from the AME Hymnal that have not been sung by the congregation in years as well as introduced new contemporary gospel music to the worship experience.
(2) Expansion of the Alamogordo Community Gospel Choir to include now 19 members of the Alamogordo community.
(3) Participation in the Alamogordo community-wide celebration with American Idol and Sunday’s Best finalist, Min. Odell Bunton, Jr.
(4) Planning for start of youth and young adult praise team in August 2025
(5) Planning for community-wide gospel music workshop in 2nd half of 2025
Mission: (1) Monetary assistance provided to victims of the California wildfires
(2) Strongly encouraged 100 percent church-wide voter participation in the 2024 primary and General Election process (registration, voting, curing, and audit of ballots).
(3) Assistance provided to three families during the Christmas season with basic subsistence and clothing necessities.
(4) Early stages of creating a non-profit Community Development Corporation to purchase abandoned and condemned buildings and land for development and revitalization of the Chihuahita community (i.e.: affordable housing and single family apartment homes within a 10-block radius)
4. Describe the worship experience at the Church?
Since being intentional about opening the front doors of the church during the worship experiences, the Holy Spirit has no longer been “shut out” of Bible study, the Sunday School
hour, or the worship experience. Incorporation of our theme of “Jesus, Justice, and Joy”, the impactful and challenging preaching by both Pastor Eve and Rev. Michael Hopkins has reinvigorated a spark within the body of Owen Chapel, which has produced seven reaffiliating family members back to “The Chapel”, one new family member (who has a passion for missions work both at home and abroad), and a flood of new and reoccurring visitors within the past six weeks, producing the largest in-person attendance seen in months.
5. What is your overall opinion of the Church and its work?
Despite the many health challenges our Pastor experienced in the first three months of the conference year, God has been faithful and we continue to undergird our Pastor Eve as she continues to fight on and leading us to improving the lives of so many within the Alamogordo community. And, as we experience the shift and movement of God, taking our service from inside the four walls of “The Chapel” to the community, we are poised and ready for the growth that is coming through the doors each Sunday to have the good old hand-clapping, foot-stomping, Holy Ghost filled worship experience that only God can provide…and we remain committed to the work of continuing to “…do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God…” knowing that the battle is already won because God is before us turning mountains into molehills.

ABOUT OUR CHURCH
1. What is the Church’s Theme for this year?
All We Do Is Win In 2025
2. How has the theme been incorporated by the Church’s organizations?
Each organization within the church has been focusing on ways to win by blocking out the distractions and noise in our lives. They also have incorporated a winning attitude in sermons and different discussions via Bible Study and Sunday School.
3. How has the Church aligned with the 5th District Theme of Mental Health, Music, and Mission?
Mental Health:
We have been focusing on different ways to improve our mental health by focusing on " hunting the good stuff", self-awareness, and improving our emotional intelligence.
Music:
We have been focusing on different genres of music that uplifts the spirit. Our music ministry tries to focus on the lyrics that are scripturally aligned to what we believe as a church as well as lyrics that uplift Kingdom Minded Principles.
Mission:
The church reached out to the youth by hosting a pajamas lock-in. This created an enviornment that allowed the youth to express themselves. We were able to incorporate a means for them to reach out if they were in trouble.
4. Describe the worship experience at the Church?
It is an authentic worhsip experience that is corporate in nature. We don't pattern ourselves after traditional systems but allow for our members to participate and engage in the experience via congregational worship and open discussion after the sermon.
5. What is your overall opinion of the Church and its work?
The church is a place of worship that fosters a family atmosphere. It is continuously seeking at ways to grow its membership, impact the community, and foster a sense of Chrisitian Identity for each individual that it comes in contact with.
