To all of our LSCS members, welcome to La Salle Computer Society!

As you all may know by now, La Salle Computer Society (LSCS) is known as the pioneering organization in the College of Computer Studies (CCS). And since 1986, we have been constantly striving to develop our members to become competent and well-rounded Lasallians who are aware of the numerous advancements in computer technology, providers of academic support to members of the organization, and liaison between the faculty and students.

This year, as LSCS enters its 35th year of service, we aim to serve our members by providing events that are geared towards the interests and needs of our members. We also aim to offer more external opportunities in line with the goals and beliefs of the organization. Lastly, we also plan to further improve our internal processes to continuously provide quality events and activities for our members.

about LSCS In 1986, Computer Science Society and Micro Users Group united to form one of De La Salle University’s most notable organizations, La Salle Computer Society (LSCS).

LSCS is the pioneering organization in the College of Computer Studies now on its 35th year of service for the Lasallian community. Developing members to become competent and well-rounded Lasallians who are aware of the numerous advances in computer technology. LSCS holds many on-campus and off-campus activities for the college. Some of these on-campus activities include programming seminars, workshops, fund-raising programs, and bazaars. For off-campus activities, these include outreach programs, company career talks, and many more.

mission vision We envision the La Salle Computer Society to be an organization that, through quality assistance and activities, will mold its members academically, socially and spiritually in order for them to become competent Lasallian students and well-rounded individuals. We also see the organization to be the pioneering student organization of the De La Salle University Manila that strongly symbolizes the expertise of the College of Computer Studies (CCS) in the field of computer science.

The La Salle Computer Society shall serve as a venue for the growth and development of its member through a three-step course of: Purpose to know and understand the reason behind every act, decision, and endeavor pursued.

FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY

by DENVER NOVEDA Opportunities to meet together can be difficult to find now that many activities remain virtual.

Online meetings feel different from physical gatherings and can be challenging to implement, especially when there are many participants.

Despite current limitations, La Salle Computer Society (LSCS) wishes to welcome its members through its first digital General Assembly. It was held last December 4, 2020, through Zoom and on LSCS’ Discord server.

The event introduced the members to LSCS and its different committees, purpose, and objectives. It enabled the organization to brief them of its upcoming activities and show some of its past events to give newer members a glimpse of what it is like to be part of LSCS. More than just a run-through, it showed that LSCS does not only focus on the aspect of computer studies. It also inspires camaraderie and growth among its members. Sharing past stories and experiences of being in the organization further shed light on what LSCS is all about. Azriel Ortega, one of the project heads, said his vision for the program was for the members to know that LSCS is a family where everyone can grow and become better.

Because this is the first digital general assembly of LSCS, it introduced some changes to its planning and execution due to limitations with member interaction and program synchronization, keeping in mind the possible technical issues that can disrupt the event. Some of the

things considered were the program flow, number of attendees, and type of ice-breaker activities to ensure interaction.

It was crucial to make it informative and interactive to keep members engaged until the end. Marc Gonzales, one of the project heads of the event, stated that one of the main things they needed to think about was how to make it enjoyable even when activities are on the screen.

Having games that encourage teamwork and focus on being enjoyable for participants and introducing the officers through a TikTok video helped keep them interested and participative.

Even with the changes to the way activities are being conducted, LSCS made an effort to ensure that its first general assembly is successful. It was essential to give a proper welcome to all members. Despite not being able to meet physically, LSCS strives to reach its members and maintain good relationships with them during this virtual term.

by KATE MAGBITANG Simultaneous with this Academic Year’s Annual Recruitment Week (ARW) last November 23 to 27, 2020, La Salle Computer Society (LSCS) held their Junior Officer (JO) Recruitment to provide a yearlong training program to the incoming officers of the organization. The JO program is mainly executed by the Training and Development (TND) committee, consisting of general assemblies, project-making events, and inspirational lectures for the current JOs and officers. With the pandemic, what should LSCS members expect from TND and the training itself?

Last year, the De La Salle University (DLSU) community experienced a sudden halt of physical classes in Term 2. Also, in compliance with the health protocols to avoid the spread of COVID-19, DLSU had to implement education online in Term 3. Former Vice President for TND and current LSCS President, Rebecalyn Lao, mentioned that the suspension of physical classes cancelled many projects of the JOs. Sustaining the JO program during Term 3 was also a challenge. She and her committee officers maximized their available resources to remain connected with the JOs and officers. Since not everyone is comfortable with the new

set-up, they implemented online games, committee training, and online get-togethers.

Current Vice President for TND, Melody Go, mentioned that she and her committee officers explored different online platforms to know which is best suited for this. Although implemented and patterned to the usual set-up, they made many considerations to give the aspiring officers a JO training experience worth remembering.

LSCS has been an organization that lives to its vision to inspire tomorrow’s leaders. As long as the JOs allow themselves to learn, the first online JO program will be beneficial and impactful. If one wishes to try something new or develop interpersonal skills that will last for a lifetime, they should look forward to the JO program.

by KATE MAGBITANG, JARRETT SINGIAN & ROBI BANOGON The Technology Summit used to have a computer technology exhibit and a whole-day forum with breakout sessions and workshops. However, with the prevalence of COVID-19, the annual event was greatly affected. From a weeklong event, Technology Summit 2020 became an online forum held last November 7, 28, and December 5. Each day consisted of two webinars and one online workshop.

Richard Zapanta, one of the project heads of Technology Summit 2020, pointed out the lack of the exhibit and the breakout sessions of the participants for the different packages. But he also noted that more people participated as there were no physical venues where capacities are usually limited.

DAY ONE On the first day, Mixed Reality and Mobile Development webinars and a Figma workshop took place. Mr. Ira James Garcia, a Marketing Product Specialist from MSI, was the speaker on Mixed Reality. He talked about how mixed reality manipulates virtual objects through a mixed reality headset with video see-through and optical see-through technologies. Although the mixed reality is still developing, it can ease collaboration with colleagues, design environments, simulate medical procedures, and conduct training for machine or repair operations.

For Mobile Development, Mr. David Reamon, a Software Development Analyst from Navitaire Inc., explained how C# helped him start his mobile development journey. He also shared Xamarin Forms, a cross-platform mobile 14 | Bits&Bytes AY20-21 T1

framework that uses C# to develop mobile applications. He ended his webinar with a demo of deploying a basic mobile application in ten minutes using Android Studio and App Center.

Finally, Mr. Nico Encarnacion, the UX manager of Make Technology, introduced Figma as one of the first web-based user interface designing platforms that supports real-time collaboration. He looked at the platform’s interface and the different layout tools, such as grids, frames, components, and the pen tool to create simple vector icons. He also discussed various prototyping features that simulate an interactive user interface using different animations and connections between frames.

DAY TWO The second day focused on developing technologies—quantum computing, 5G networks, and game development. Mr. Bobby Corpus Jr., the Innovation Lead in the Enterprise Data Office at Globe Telecoms and organizer of the meet-up group Quantum Computing Philippines, expressed the capabilities of quantum computers in cryptography and problem optimization such as search algorithms.

He explained quantum computing and its relation to quantum physics like superposition and entanglement. At the end of his talk, he demonstrated how to code a quantum computing program using the open-source framework QISKit. Meanwhile, Ms. Karen Garcia, the Program Governance Manager of Globe Telecoms, discussed the rising prominence of 5G networks in terms of increased speed, lower latency, and higher capacity to connect to devices. She revealed how 5G networks impact missioncritical services and the massive internet of things (IoT).

Mr. Dennis Li, a Programmer from Ubisoft Philippines, presented the fastly growing gaming industry and the overview process of game development. He also debunked the notion that a career in the gaming industry is unsustainable as it is a thriving industry with stable job opportunities.

On the other hand, Mr. Raphael Luy, Manager in SGV & Co., described what cybersecurity consultants do and gave the participants an overview of potential cyber risks. Mr. Jed Chua, Senior Associate SGV & Co., reported the fundamentals and best practices of cybersecurity, as well as the common attacks that network securities encounter.

Mr. Seavor Choy, CTO of Anteriore Inc., imparted how business and technology affect each other simultaneously. He also gave tips for aspiring technologists who plan to dive into the business world.

Without a doubt, Technology Summit 2020 was an enormous success despite the changes and delays brought by the pandemic and the recent typhoons. Although it used to be an event enjoyed physically, the project heads were efficient in turning this into an online forum with diverse and engaging talks on different technologies.

DAY THREE On the last day, there were demonstrations on Blockchain, Cybersecurity, and the Future of Technology in Business. Mr. Brent Tudas, a Certified Blockchain Solutions Architect (CBSA) and the co-founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Arya Twelve-Bakas PH, examined the introductory guide on Blockchain, its benefits, and its use in various fields, such as P2P transactions and Data Ownership.

In recent months, most of the world’s population has switched to an online setting, whether for work, for school, or even for socialization. With this, the surge of online traffic has led to more counts of cyberattacks. With the ongoing threat looming over the internet, netizens should become vigilant for the dangers that may lurk.

In line with this, (LSCS) conducted last November 27, taking the class

La Salle Computer Society a Cybercrime Laws seminar 2020, for students currently Introduction to Computing

(CCICOMP). The speaker for the webinar was Atty. Mike Gerald David, a lawyer and faculty member of the Ramon V. Del Rosario College of Business. He delved into the proper definition of crime and cybercrime and the different cybercrime activities conducted today by malicious parties, such as identity theft, cyberbullying, and cyber-libel.

Participants learned their responsibility as future cybersecurity experts in preventing abuse of technology that they have access to and have created.

by REGINA MASILANG College of Computer Science (CCS) students are no strangers to collaborative work, but passing and editing the same source file back and forth can be quite the challenge. Introducing the concept of version control as a solution, La Salle Computer Society (LSCS) provided an online workshop on a well-used tool in the industry: Git. Held on November 27, 2020, Mr. Joppet Escota —a Polytechnic University of the Philippines graduate with nearly 6.5 years of work experience as a software engineer—facilitated the three-hour session. He demonstrated how to install, set up, initialize, and clone Git repositories. He also discussed the basic Git commands, workflows, and integrations.

He accommodated every question and assisted the participants who encountered difficulties.

Gab dela Cruz shared that the Laguna charter needed the same workshop, so he collaborated with the Manila charter. Both he and LSCS President Rebecalyn Lao thought it was an opportunity to make the organization more inclusive.

They share the same vision of increased productivity and satisfaction within the organization. With this, Dela Cruz told his members to expect more projects with the Manila charter in the succeeding terms.

Let’s Git Ready allowed the participants to gain a new functional tool that can make their CCS life convenient, as LSCS discovered and explored an opening to better the organization.

CEO - what a short but powerful title. Have you ever wondered what it feels like to have that kind of power and money? Life seems so much easier when you have so much cash to spare, right? However, some often overlook the sweat and tears shed when managing a business and building it from the ground up. It is easy to envision how to be good at what you do, but the process of getting there may throw you off the course. The bigger the dream, the more difficulties you will face. Still, so many people are brave enough to jump into this competitive world and start their ventures.

CCS-preneur features entrepreneurs from the College of Computer Studies (CCS) and their startup businesses. This year-long promotion frees CCS students and alumni from the stereotype that they are limited to codes and computers. They also know a thing or two about handling a business. They do not just write code; they also write financial statements.

As we know, the business sector is one of the most affected by the ongoing pandemic. Many brick and mortar shops had to close down.

Consequently, there was a surge of online sellers as more people resorted to online shopping. Although this is a more competitive set-up, it did not stop CCS students and alumni from opening their businesses. This advocacy also shows other students the endless possibilities that await them. These possibilities still exist even in these trying times.

“We hope to inspire aspiring CCS entrepreneurs to grab business opportunities and not let the ramifications of the pandemic be the reason to give up their goals,” — Bea Berenguer, Project Head 2020 did not turn out the way many of us planned it to be. But one thing to learn from our CCS-preneurs is we have the strength to start our adventure whenever we want (as long as we have a mask and face shield on).

CCS-preneur goes beyond supporting local; it supports the idea that CCS students and alumni have unlocked potential.

by ROBI BANOGON The pandemic may have put the world on pause, but it can never stop art. If anything, the pandemic has even encouraged the production of art. In this lonely and monotonous time, art is probably a medium that people use to counter negative emotions from overwhelming them.

It serves as an outlet to express oneself and release tensions and feelings that bottled-up, especially when there is no physical interaction.

With this, the La Salle Computer Society (LSCS) continued their project, CCS Life+Style.

As the organizer, the Publicity and Creatives committee shall showcase submitted artworks of the College of Computer Studies (CCS) students throughout this Academic Year. It started to encourage CCS students to share their talent for art and convey their experiences.

However, with the pandemic, circumstances have changed. “After the pandemic hit, I feel like our goal has changed a bit. Because we’re all stuck in our homes, the majority of CCS culture exists only in our memories,” said Sharmaine Gaw, Vice President of Publicity and Creatives.

The first poster published on LSCS’ Facebook page last December 5, 2020,

invited CCS students to submit their entries and partake in this endeavor.

For this year’s CCS Life+Style, its content would make CCS students reminisce about their lives pre-COVID-19. It will continue to do the same, hoping that ID 120 students would look forward to going back to the University. Although Gaw mentioned that she wants to spice things up soon, so stay tuned.

Technology’s role expands from as simple as providing a platform for taking digital notes to perform heavy computations for various research fields. Today with the COVID-19, business, communication, and education sectors rely more on the constant development and update of relevant consumer-level technologies.

Fortunately, competent software developers are not only in the IT industry but also in colleges and universities.

La Salle Computer Society (LSCS) prides itself as not only one of the home organizations for residents of the College of Computer Studies (CCS) but also as one of the forefronts of De La Salle University (DLSU) when it comes to matters concerning computer technology. And with that regard, the LSCS’ Research and Development (RND) committee has committed itself to the LSCS Application Services to provide services in software development of consumer-level applications.

With the digital environment becoming a need, LSCS-RND continues to create systems and applications upon request. Among others, LSCSRND maintains the official website of LSCS by regularly updating its content and design to provide up-to-date information and a good user experience.

Perhaps one of the biggest hits LSCS-RND has achieved in its application service is the recently concluded Annual Recruitment Week (ARW) of organizations under the Council of Student

Organizations (CSO). ARW usually happens within the campus, where booths of different organizations line up to welcome potential members. But with the current pandemic, this is no longer possible. CSO then approached LSCS to develop a website allowing Lasallians to apply for memberships of their chosen organizations.

In just about a month, LSCS-RND accomplished the official ARW 2020 website.

Over the years, the LSCS Application Services has seemingly become a platform for personal and professional achievements for LSCS. Their passion is not merely stated but rather shown in their excellent, carefully crafted outputs.
