Photoshop Automation and Scripting Workshop

It goes without saying that the work of artists and designers can sometimes be stressful and overwhelming, most notably when they’re on borrowed time. During these situations, it would be helpful if they could save their precious time and automate certain tasks that are simple and repetitive. This is how Photoshop Scripts came to be!

La Salle Computer Society (LSCS) recognizes the creatives of the College of Computer Studies (CCS) and tries to help them through hosting, “Photoshop Automation & Scripting Workshop.” This was held last February 11, 2020 at Room 209 of the Gokongwei Building and spearheaded by Jarrett Singian.

The program used Visual Studio Code as code editor and allowed the attendees to focus on creating personal scripts and automating the usual and/or repetitive actions in Photoshop, resulting to shorter and more productive workflow.

In this two-hour workshop, CCS students are made to realize that although scripts are programmed and written in code, they don’t have to be advanced programmers to be able to do this; they just need basic knowledge on JavaScript. Since CCS students already have preexisting knowledge on that, the flow of the workshop was smooth and everyone was able to follow.

FIGMA 101

According to one of the project heads, Geosef Uy, the event was created for ID 118 students of the College of Computer Studies (CCS), since their subjects last term involved web applications and producing a well-made interface for their projects.

Last February 14, 2020, La Salle Computer Society (LSCS) held a workshop entitled, “Figma 101,” at Room 1103 of the Andrew Building.

With Miguel Alfonso Quiambao as the facilitator, the attendees were able to develop an application using Figma and present their outputs towards the end of the program.

Figma is helpful in designing user interface (UI), as well as in collaborating with one another when developing interfaces for applications or websites.

This workshop definitely changed the game in designing interfaces and made the attendees more confident in presenting their creations.

TECHNOKIDS

IT CUP

Last January 18 and February 8, 2020, La Salle Computer Society (LSCS) held its annual tournament in partnership with Technokids Philippines, the “Technokids IT CUP 2020.”

Each team was at their feet as they answered hurdles of questions correctly, not knowing if they were to their liking or not.

The more difficult the question was, the more points were given to them.

Technokids IT CUP 2020 took place in various areas of the University, including Teresa Yuchengco Auditorium of Yuchengco Hall, Room 303 of Miguel Hall, and Verdure, 5th Floor of Henry Sy, Sr. Hall.

The quiz bee was followed by a multimedia and programming competition, testing everyone’s creativity in graphic design and animation, and critical thinking skills in formulating solutions to programming problems.

Both Associate Vice Presidents for Research and Development of LSCS, Kysonn Dela Cerna (II, BS CS-CSE) and Gerald Dalan (II, BS CS-ST), arranged this two-day event for grade school and high school students around the Philippines.

On the first day, they had a quiz bee to challenge the minds of potential programmers on computer terms and software. Teams of two (2) were formed per school.

On the other hand, the second day was filled with excitement because of the robotics competition. Each group went through different courses in the arena and used their wits to control their respective functional robots and obtain the highest scores.

At the end of the day, all participants, especially the winners, were recognized. Everyone went home with smiles on their faces and experiences to remember.

INTRODUCTION

TO C#

As Computer Science (CS) or Information Technology (IT) majors, we all know the struggles that programming may bring. This includes checking errors, may it be syntactical or logical, fixing bugs, learning a new programming language, and a lot more.

However, learning a new language takes the longest time. We don’t get fully immersed in the language right away. So, it is best to try various standard programming languages, and find which resonates in each of us.

With that in mind, La Salle Computer Society (LSCS) conducted, “Introduction to C#.” This workshop, held last March 5, 2020 at Room 1103 of Andrew Building, focused on the basics of the C# language and differentiated it from other known languages.

The attendees went through it step by step using their laptops and with the guidance of their facilitator. They were able to experience a language that different companies use nowadays, giving them a competitive advantage compared to those who are not exposed to this.

This program would not be possible without the Associate Vice Presidents for Academics, James Lin (II, BS CS-ST) and Mikayla Tejada (II, BS CS-ST).

Video Editing Workshop

by Patrick Lawrence Simpao La Salle Computer Society (LSCS) had a Video Editing Workshop last February 29, 2020 at Room 207 of Gokongwei Building. Jarrett Ethan Singian, Vice President for Publicity and Creatives of LSCS, arranged this to boost the participants’ creativity and video impact.

Marc Gonzales, Creatives Head of La Salle Dance Company (LSDC), and Elderwell “Vhino” Ramos, Assistant Vice President for Publicity and Creatives of LSCS, led the said program.

Before going to the technicalities of video editing, Marc shared his content creation process. He explained that it starts with identifying a new topic to work on, deciding the form, determining a strategy, and then actually producing it.

He also pointed out the importance of practicing and combining your own brand/ style while still incorporating the trends.

Meanwhile, Vhino taught the basics of Adobe Premiere, a timeline-based video editing application developed by Adobe as part of the Adobe Creative Cloud. He demonstrated how to import, cut, trim, add transitions, place effects, and export videos.

The attendees were also given time to produce their own videos and present them during the session.

La Salle Computer Society (LSCS) always strives to help its members in their academics. This is why the Academics Committee of LSCS holds multiple workshops and seminars to provide additional knowledge and/or mastery of certain topics.

Since there are students to take Web Application Development (CCAPDEV), LSCS organized, “NodeJS 101,” last February 27, 2020 at Room 703 of Andrew Building.

This program aimed to deepen understanding on NodeJS, a runtime environment that allows the execution of JavaScript code outside a web browser.

Light in the midst

of the Pandemic

The Corona Virus Disease 19 (COVID-19) took the world by surprise. No one expected it to affect our daily routines this much.

Now with the new normal, classes and organizational events had to be done virtually, shaking everyone up by the sudden change of plans and mandatory transitions.

Ivy Tan, a second year student of College of Computer Studies (CCS), said that the transition to virtual learning became challenging because of connectivity problems, especially when exchanging big files; coordinating with her professors; and possible misunderstanding when discussing highly technical terms with her classmates.

All of these left her feeling anxious because she thought virtual learning would be tougher than face-to-face classes.

Rebecalyn Lao, LSCS Vice President of Training and Development, stated that the pandemic canceled most of the organizational events, if not moved online. At first, the Executive Board didn’t know how to proceed with this new set-up. However, through collaborative planning, they slowly progressed despite all challenges.

This allowed them to think outside the box and help their members adapt to the situation,

“Reaching out and helping a few members is better than doing nothing at all.

We may feel restricted in terms of the events that we can do. But helping our members, may it be in academics or not, can have an impact to them as well.”

Ms. Unisse Chua, Assistant Professor in the Software Technology Department of CCS, expressed that she constantly needed to do adjustments to avoid merging her personal and professional routines.

As a professor, she also had troubles in shifting gears from physical to online classes; making sure she delivers her lesson and communicates with students well; and prioritizing more important things than research.

Although affected, she encouraged her students to take this chance to learn something new or work on what they’re passionate about. This is also a time to stay sane and connected with their loved ones.

Finally, LSCS president himself, Ivan Dichaves, shared his feelings amid the pandemic. “Like most of our officers, I feel sad that we won’t be able to push through our plans and projects the way we envisioned them. However, I am also encouraged to work harder and smarter; to be creative in engaging with our members online. There is nothing wrong with being scared as this is a time full of uncertainties.

But we should do our best not to let this fear get the better of us. Let us learn to take some time off, reflect, and understand ourselves better to know which activities or tasks can help us in coping with our current situation.
