director’s letter When you’re younger you develop dreams and aspirations for what you want in life. You gain knowledge as you experience love, heartbreak, friendship, unexpected struggles and accomplishments. Each life lesson impacts you and develops who you will become. You can end up living in the past or look to the future and make shit happen. Eleanor Roosevelt said, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” That quote was the inspiration of this issue. Every person we chose had a dream and no matter how much they have achieved at this point; they still have so much more to offer in the future. Samira Wiley (pg. 24) is one of those people with her first major role as Poussey Washington on Orange is the New Black. I was able to get the opportunity to speak with her and after hearing about her ambition, humility and gratitude; it gave me more respect for the already impressive actress. People like her succeed because they appreciate what they have and possess the drive to go further, which you can expect will happen in the third season of OITNB this upcoming June. Also check out our fresh selection of Decibel artists (pg. 28 -32). They may have been around for a while, but 2014 catapulted these rising stars, and you can expect to hear a lot more from them in 2015. Other features are of ones that have succeeded in the past already, but taking that success and letting it continue to grow such as Chef Park’s third endeavor, Tray Kitchen (pg. 12), Marcus Charles’ latest opening, Bell + Whete (pg. 14), Dirty Dancing’s Eleanor

Bergstein (pg 22), Comedian Joel McHale (pg. 42) and hair-design industry leader, William Edge (pg. 56). Their careers have and will bring changes and new experiences to Seattle. An important need in not only Seattle’s, but also the Northwest’s future, is to build Ladybug House (pg. 49), a palliative care home for children and families in need. The ennobling story of one woman’s angelic vision, along with a team of believers, that was a perfect fit for our new section titled “dreams” that focuses on philanthropy and unexpected heroes. It was important to me to add this section to DList Magazine because it’s those people that shape the future for the good of society and possessing a power to help spread the word is an honor I hold dear. So I hope this issue is an inspiration as you take a look at yourself and your own future. I’ve learned it’s not about what you do, but who you are and who you will become and most importantly the people that will be apart of it. To the dreamers, doers and lovers… I wish you the best of luck and an amazing 2015.

2014 Year end review Ahhhh another year down and society is still kicking. During 2014 we saw moments that made us proud to be a human being and others that made us want to sign up for Richard Branson's space shuttle to get the hell off this rock. Here are some of the highlights that made 2014 another oddly wonderful year. Cheers to still being alive.

2014 GOT HITCHED A historic moment happened early 2014 when Queen Latifah married 33 couples, gay and straight, at the Grammy Awards during a performance of “Same Love” by Macklemore, Ryan Lewis and Miranda Lambert. While some people praised the loving moment others bashed it with hateful anti-gay statements. However you look at marriage, it didn't effect America’s number one bachelor, George Clooney, who finally found “the one” after only one year. The 53-year-old stud married human rights lawyer, Amal Alamuddin, crushing the dreams of Las Vegas’ cocktail servers that thought they could have been the [next] one. Another marriage (sort of ) was that of Afton Burton and Charles Manson when she announced she was his wife, but the official wedding date is yet to come. Burton says she doesn’t care if people think she’s crazy. Who would think that? She only shaved her head and carved an “X” into it to show her loyalty. That’s totally normal. Oh yeah, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West got married too.

MAJOR FAIL

BUCKET O' ICE

The awkward moment seen around the world when one ring failed to light up at the opening ceremony of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics that received more attention than the Winter Olympics themselves. When The Daily Current claimed the technician behind the mishap was found dead and murdered, thousands of people shared the satirical news site not knowing the story was a hoax. But in their defense it was on the Internet. Everything you read on the Internet is true.

Throughout July and August 2014, it was nearly impossible to get through your Facebook feed without someone pouring a bucket of ice water over their head and hearing the names of fellow friends being called out for the challenge to spread awareness of the ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) Association. If you didn’t complete the challenge within 24 hours you were forced to make a charitable donation to the foundation. Maybe we all should have been like Matt Damon who didn't want to waste precious clean water (he is an advocate for clean drinking water for third world countries through his partnership at www.water.org) and dumped toilet water over our heads. Damon also donated cash as well to the cause. That man is the sh#t (pun intended.)

EBOLA EXAGGERATION As Africa is suffering from a serious Ebola outbreak where thousands have died, the US media decided to strike fear into the entire nation claiming we too could be facing the worst viral outbreak in American history after the death of Thomas Eric Duncan this past October. Yet it’s the only Ebola death in the US since the rise of modern medicine. However, the media weren't the only ones benefiting from the scare, Brands for Sale decided to make and sell a sexy Ebola nurse costume this past Halloween. Way to keep it classy America.

SAY WHAT? After “selfie”, “hashtag” and “tweet” were added to the dictionary in 2013, why wouldn’t the Oxford Dictionary find more embarrassing things to classify in the English language this past year? Slang and nickname words, “vape”, “bae”, “normcore” and “slacktivism” were added this past November. OMG we can't believe this is real. #instfunny #ihopemymomunderstandsmenow

STERLING GOT CLIPPED It really comes down to the saying, “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” After a recording of blatant racist remarks from Clippers owner Donald Sterling went public on TMZ; the NBA Commissioner banned him from the NBA for life and fined him $2.5 million, which was peanuts compared to the $2 billion the team sold for. One of the NBA owners stated they never took Sterling serious as an owner and was considered the “class clown” of the NBA… maybe it should have been “class-less clown.”

hat happens when you pair dim sum, locally inspired flavors, and Seattle restaurateur, Chef Heong Soon Park? The answer is a dining experience similar to that of renowned State Bird Provision in the heart of Fremont. Fremont has its staples but with Chef Park’s intimate concept, which took stage this past November, confirms ditching old faithful could be fruitful. Park has been feeding Seattle since he opened Bacco (2008) and Chan (2012) at Pike Place. A graduate of the Culinary Arts program at the Art Institute of Seattle, his idea for Tray Kitchen hinges on

12

URBAN FARM the notion that dining is a full sensory experience that should be driven by homegrown, seasonal ingredients. Tray Kitchen guests can order a la cart items off the menu like the Roasted Bone Marrow or Kimchi Pork Sausage. In the meantime, dim sum-style small plates created around ingredients from Park’s Woodinville farm circulate in the dining room. Butter Poached Broccoli, Pan Roasted Duck Breast and Wild Mushroom Farro with chanterelle mushroom whipped ricotta are just a few of the ever-changing items that diners can pick and choose. “The cart provides a creative forum for the cooks

to experiment with making dishes on the spot and whenever possible, deliver them to the table themselves to talk with our guests. In traditional settings, the lead chef is the person who sets the menu and the other cooks follow. We are able to create an environment where we can all experiment and learn from each other. Diners are the beneficiaries of this collaboration,” Park elaborates. From the ambiance of the oak accents in the intimate candle-lit dining room and innovative concept, Tray Kitchen is Asian Inspired Northwest at its finest.

THE FOOD KOREAN FRIED CHICKEN WINGS There are several Tray Kitchen highlights but all

pallets agree you can’t go wrong with the K. F. C. (Korean Fried Chicken wings) off the a la cart menu. Tender chicken with a kick of Korean chili sauce and sprinkle of sunflower seeds spice up what might normally be your average poultry dish. This is a plate that makes you wonder whether or not you’ve ever had fried chicken done right before now. You won’t leave a crumb of the impossibly flavorful and crunchy coating on the plate. Try it with the Honey Roasted Carrots, fennel seeds, feta, and smoked paprika off the cart.

SPARE RIBS Braised and Grilled Pork Spare Ribs with citrus glaze falls of the bone in its bed of fresh Swiss chard. The glaze is light as not to detract from the meat and the Swiss chard is the perfect compliment. The flavor profile of the chard is bold enough not to get lost under the heaviness of the pork without losing the raw green taste. Pair it with the Roasted Cauliflower, white wine drunken raisins, juniper berry, and coriander hazelnuts to add a mildly boozy crunch.

DETAILS, DETAILS HAPPY HOUR: Swing by for Happy Hour from 5 pm – 6:30 pm and 9 pm – close to enjoy $6 wine, $7 craft cocktails (I suggest the Conquistador: tequila, dry cuacao, orange lime, pineapple gum), and $4 beer. Out on a school night? Don’t miss the Pomegranate Ginger Soda with grenadine, ginger, lemon and seltzer or the Evolving (kom) Bucha with seltzer. BRUNCH: Brunch is arguably the most important aspect of any weekend. Starting in December Tray Kitchen will offer options like omelets and benedicts a la cart, serving sides like house made yogurt and granola, and fresh fruit in the dining room. 4012 Leary Way NW Seattle, WA 98107 (206) 557-7059 www.traykitchen.com

more than steak done right. Nestled between crisp Ciabatta bread and slathered tastefully in the epicurean flavor profiles of bleu cheese and horseradish, this is a cut above the rest. The tender slabs of mouthwatering deep pink steak are flawlessly executed and not out done. Accompanied by golden thick Belgian fries. Try it with the Good Grog (Bacardi Select, Tawny Port, Rossbacher Herbal Liqueur, Marley’s Tonic).

HOUSE MADE BOAR BRATWURST SAUSAGE BOARD WITH BANNOCK (HAPPY HOUR: $5.00) The Bell + Whete Sausage

Boards are ideal as brawny share plates. Choose between the gamey and flavorful boar, spicy garlic, venison, or duck foie gras during happy hour. The stone ground mustard works with caramelized onions to bring out the kind of satisfaction that comes from in-house care and quality ingredients. Try it with a $3 Stella.

HOUSE FLATBREAD WITH BLEU CHEESE, PEAR, AND ARUGULA (HAPPY HOUR: $5.00) Delicately fried flat bread serves

as a graceful crunch beneath fresh crisp pears, vibrant arugula and a generous sprinkle of bleu cheese. The fried bread is flavorful enough to enjoy on its own (it also comes with the Sausage Board) but the tart form is ideal for a happy hour snack, appetizer or even a take home treat. Try it with a Little Dagger (Sparkling Wine, Cointreau, Allspice Liqueur, Cranberry, Angostura Bitters)

CLAMS WITH WHITE WINE ($12.00) Aperitif clams swimming in buttery white wine give a nod to the traditional Northwest fare. The clams are supple and saturated in flavor without being overpowered. Practically falling out of the shells, this is a subtle and complimentary companion to the heavier Sausage Board and the fried bread is perfect for soaking up left over broth. Try it with a $5 Moscow Mule. CARAMELIZED PORK BELLY (HAPPY HOUR: $2.50) Imagine fall apart in your mouth, lightly bacon flavored and succulent bite-sized pieces of savory meat candy in a sizable portion. The pigs greatest gift – do not miss this one. It’s a rare plate that actually makes you happy you left the cave. Try it with a Rodenbach Grand Cru Sour Beer.

SENSORY INTEGRITY Written by Charity Mainville Photos by Daniel Hager

Pioneer Square is making a strong comeback with new luxury apartments and condominiums, multiple new boutique and intimate restaurants and crafted cocktail bars including the latest opening, Good Bar on 2nd Avenue S and Main Street. After getting a sampling of five of its tasty and aromatic cocktails crafted by bar manager, Adam Kachman, the name was a great choice because this bar is good. The décor and atmosphere portrays a modern influence of an old school mobster tavern. The black and cream color scheme keeps it feeling clean and contemporary while the black and white photographs, brass desk lamps and the bank vault inspired doors behind the u-shaped bar provides an old-school classy feel. However, what makes Good Bar unique is its cocktails from the homemade cordials to every fresh ingredient under the sun. Adam explained to me the focus was to put emphasis on the components of specific cocktails to make it about sensory rather than recipe from the aromas to the moment it hits your palate. The cordials made in house are tediously made; from roasting the lemons to toasting Kellogg’s Corn Flakes in the corn flake cream. Combining the components together with around 2 oz. quality spirits makes every sip worth every penny. 240 2nd Ave. S, Seattle, WA 98104 (206) 624-2337 www.goodbarseattle.com

GOOD BAR DRINK Breakfast Flip Evan William Bourbon, corn flake cream, Vermont maple syrup (grade b), egg, Agnostura Bitters

Whiskey Smash Old Overholt Rye, lemon, sloe cordial, cranberry ginger, mint

A small twist on classic eggnog made me want to cuddle up next to a warm fire the moment the creamy rich cocktail hit my taste buds. The fresh shaven nutmeg was the initial taste of holiday spice followed by a familiar taste of cereal milk. The homemade toasted corn flake cream and maple syrup complemented the bourbon leaving only a subtle kick.

This drink is perfect for light whiskey drinkers because the taste of the bitter grain is so deliciously masked that you wouldn’t even know that was the main ingredient. This was my favorite of the five. The sweetness wasn’t sugary and the lemon along with the cranberry ginger gave a bit of a refreshing tart. It’s a great cocktail year round and it’s so beautifully garnished that you will enjoy just looking at it.

Fox’s Hypothesis Old Overholt Rye, Tempus Fugit Crème de Cacao dark, stone fruit bitter, lemon oil This is definitely for the whiskey drinkers that enjoy the warm spicy grains of rye. However before I tasted it, I wouldn’t have known what I was in store for as the aromas of the fresh lemon oil masks the sharp notes of a typical rye drink. The best part of the drink in my opinion is the finish. The mix of the brown cocoa, stone fruit bitter and lemon oil left a taste similar to subtlety sweet chocolate cake.

Triple Six El Jimador Reposado, lime shrub, cassis, firewater, Timber City Ginger Beer I had no idea what I was in store when I picked up this cocktail. The aroma was a combination of sweet citrus and ginger spice. Granted I knew one of the ingredients was firewater, but I didn’t realize it packed such a spicy punch. Spicy cocktails are trending and its standard to find one on most cocktail menus in Seattle and if that’s what you prefer, you will love it.

WE LIKE IT RARE

When it comes to liquor served at Good Bar, expect to see the most popular brands spread across its back bar. It’s main focusing is keeping stock of sprits that are known for their taste, winning gold or double gold tasting awards. Spirits that have integrity and rare selections you may not find at other bars around Seattle such as the Fabriquée Par Les Peres Chartreux offered in both green and yellow labels that sit at $170 a bottle.

DINE DIRTY DANCING

TIME OF YOUR LIFE Written by Charity Mainville Photo by Matthew Murphy

Dirty Dancing opened on August 21, 1987 and was a box office hit grossing just under $214 million worldwide, the first film to sell more than a million copies on home video and the hit single “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” won a Golden Globe, Academy Award and Grammy. The romantic drama showed the fictitious story between straight-laced daddy’s girl, Frances “Baby” Houseman, and rebelliousmysterious, Johnny Castle, set in the summer of 1963. Baby becomes intrigued in the world of dirty dancing after stumbling upon a late night sweaty session in the workers cabins at the summer retreat her and her parents are attending. She finds herself learning the moves with Johnny, agreeing to help out with a dance competition after his partner was forced to withdrawal from in order to have an abortion that is subsequently performed by Baby’s father in an emergency situation. The two fall in love, father doesn’t approve, and well… either you know how it ends or you will have to watch it for yourself. Fast-forward to 2014 and Dirty Dancing – A Classic

20

Story on Stage has become a Broadway hit and will be here in Seattle at the Paramount from January 20th to February 1st. The screenwriter of the film, Eleanor Bergstein, wrote the production book for the show. She explained, “As I learned how many people watched the movie over and over and over, I began to think that what they really wanted was to share more intensely in the event, to step through the screen and be there while the story was happening.” Bergstein originally wrote the screenplay because she loved to dance and came up with the title before she even wrote the film. She grew up learning to “dirty dance” at house parties and held the nickname “Baby,” which inspired some of the story. The film had a very low budget, but due to its success, Bergstein was able to expand the story with more Johnny and Baby scenes, more about the family, more songs she couldn’t afford at the time and more dancing. Don’t worry, it will still have the basic story and the unforgettable songs like “Hungry Eyes,” “Hey Baby,” Do You Love Me?” and “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life.”

www.DLISTMAGAZINE.com

There is a company of 28 performers casted in the roles of the unforgettable characters with Samuel Pergande as Johnny Castle and Jillian Mueller as Baby. Pergande is no stranger to dancing as he began performing professionally at age eight. He relates to Johnny a lot growing up in a very similar class and the struggles with balancing life. Mueller just finished starring in Flashdance – The Musical, inspired by another classic 80’s dance film. Whether you want to relive your favorite 80’s movie or find out what the entire buzz is about, this is your chance to experience it live. As some men may shy from the “chick flick” genre, Pergande said, “All the guys that I have talked to that have seen it, enjoy it. There really is something for everyone in this show. It's safe to say that everyone has the time of their lives!" Tickets for Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story On Stage start at $25 and will be available at www.stgpresents.org.

DISTINCT SAMIRA WILEY

CONVICTED TALENT

photo courtesy Nino Muñoz for Netflix

Orange is the New Black has swept the nation as one of the hottest shows to watch. This past season, Samira Wiley’s character, Poussey Washington, gained high exposure with the sharing of her back story, exposing unforeseen relationships and facing turmoil. The buzz around her character is making an impact showing Samira is a star to watch. It is only the beginning for Samira’s acting career, but as the next season comes our way this summer, fans are eagerly waiting to see what will happen to Poussey and watch Samira continue to grow as one of TV’s most talented actresses. INTERVIEW BY CHARITY MAINVILLE

What inspired to what to get into acting or is it something you’ve always wanted to do? SAMIRA WILEY: Yes, it’s definitely something I’ve always wanted to do ever since I knew acting was a thing you could do and get paid for it. I also remember the first time I was introduced to it. I was in elementary school and they were having this oratorical contest. The way it went was someone would get on stage and say a poem they memorized; it was pretty boring. I was eight years old sitting there and wanted to be over. And then this girl got on stage and recited this poem by Nikki Giovanni, one of my favorite poets, called “Ego Tripping.” It was different than everyone coming there being boring. I felt she really commanded the audience in a way of being a performance rather than just repetition. That was the moment. I remember sitting up in my seat and being like I want to do that, I feel like I can do that. That was probably the first seed of me wanting to be an actress. You graduated from Juilliard in drama, which is a great accomplishment in itself. What was it like to attend such a prestigious school and was difficult getting accepted? SW: I feel like Julliard is seen as the unattainable you know what I mean? When I was in high school I heard about Julliard, and I’m sure that movie Save the Last Dance came out at that time. It was seen as if it was put on a pedestal in a way. When I was in high school I didn’t dare of thinking of Julliard or dare thinking about auditioning. I actually I went to Temple University in Philadelphia for a little while and while I was there one of my professor encouraged me to seek out other schools. I was like, “where do you want me to audition? Julliard?” And she was like “Yes! You should try it!” That was the first time that I had someone in authority give

SAMIRA WILEY DISTINCT

me affirmation like that. I always knew I was interested in theater. I knew I loved it, but I never really had affirmation I was good at it. So I basically go audition for Julliard. I had no expectations really. I was just like, “I am going to go do this.” I had been rejected from art schools before and that was hard putting my heart on the line and being vulnerable in that way. I just went and did the audition and didn’t really think too much about it, which probably really helped me because I wasn’t too nervous. Julliard has 1,000 - 2000 people audition every year for 18 slots so I couldn’t think of that because that messes your psyche up, but it was definitely amazing and think going to that school put me where I am today.

SW: I just got the audition like any other audition. I was an out of work actor working as a bartender and a few times a week my agent would send me auditions. I was just trying to get a job. I didn’t really know anything about the show. With it being on Netflix I had no idea what that meant. You know there was nothing out yet; House of Cards wasn’t out to compare it to. I just went in without any expectations, but I do know when I read the audition material for Poussey, the character I was going in for, I felt it. You know sometimes you get these feelings when you go on auditions, like “Wow, I feel like I know this person. I feel like somewhere inside of me I can bring this person to life and it’s not so far away from me.”

You worked in theater out of school, was that what you wanted to focus your career on or was TV/Film your ultimate goal? SW: Yeah, I think I had this view and think a lot of young actors think as themselves as serious actors, I definitely thought I was serious actor. I was under impression that theater was the real art and that’s what I needed to be doing to stay true to what I inspired to be. So yeah that was my goal, I wanted to be a theater actress, I wanted to be on Broadway, I wanted to win Tonys, all that kind of thing. Not until really recently I think being so immersed in Orange and being on set day in and day out I’ve really come to see film and TV is almost its own craft in a way that is different from theater. You have to master it in a different way. Going through this process I have a new appreciation that it’s not less of anything; it just has its own merit. I am very happy that I learned that.

Danielle Brooks (Tastyee) and you are good friends in real life even before OITNB, what is like working with your friend especially in a role that develops your love for her character? SW: Actually getting the role and being able to do with Danielle is where it’s really helped me. Being on set on with her and I think our chemistry is great and we feed off each other. Also she went to Julliard so we almost speak the same language when it comes to acting. I think it makes it a lot easier. You know where we did that scene in season 2 where I kissed her I think I would it would be all nervous and weird if I didn’t know the person as well, but we were like joking the whole time through it, and it was comfortable.

OITNB is your first major role as an actress, how did auditioning for the role come about?

I read that you grew up in a very religious family, your father is a pastor; how does your family feel about you portraying a role as a convicted felon? SW: Yeah both of my parents are pastors and my grandfather was a pastor so I definitely come from a family raised in the church, but I think my parents are very liberal, forward thinking, non-traditional of what you think of a Baptist pastor. They have always instilled in me, number one that I be anything I want to be and you should go for whatever you love. My father is one so influent by this person, Howard Thurman, and he has thing that do whatever makes your heart sing so I really appreciate that my parents are so encouraging to my brothers and sisters and myself to do whatever we love. My parents love the show, and they watch it. They think it’s good TV and all about showing actor portrayals of what life looks like. They don’t have any problem with it. What can you tell us about your character, Poussey that people may not realize when watching the show? SW: When I think about the women in prison, I think for everyone it changes a person in a way of survival - to put on armor to protect you and not appear weak. I think there is an element of that in all the girls including Poussey. I think one thing people don’t know or haven’t picked up is that Poussey, in my opinion is just a really kind person and she’s genuine and wants the best for people. I think she’s bundle of love and think prison is

DISTINCT SAMIRA WILEY

taking some of that away from her. Do you know what is in store for Poussey in this upcoming season? SW: Well thinking about season 2, it was a pretty big season in highlighting her story and it was difficult. It wasn’t necessarily all smiles. I think it took a lot out of her. It was very different from the energy that I think people got used to in the team of Tastyee and Poussey from season 1. I’m looking forward to season 3 and getting back to that energy. I just don’t want Poussey to be sad anymore. Is there a direction you would like your character to take that maybe the writers haven’t directed towards? SW: I try not to think about that too much because I think our writers are amazing. I trust them so much and when I get scripts I know I would never be able to come up with things half as good as they come up with. Also I think I could get into trouble in being attached to ideas that I might want because they might not happened actually most of the time they won’t happen so I try to be open to whatever is revealed in the next script. Do you feel OITNB portrays a realistic look at women’s correctional facilities? Have you been to any or gotten

26

involved any programs since been on the show? SW: From what I know, I haven’t myself visited a facility, but I know all writers went and toured a women’s prison similar to Litchfield. From what I gather, especially talking to writers and talking to a lot of previously incarcerated woman all they can say is how accurate it is. Taylor Schilling who plays Piper Chapman is involved in this organization called WPA – Woman’s Prison Association and the cast met the women that run it. A lot of the woman that run it are previous incarcerated women so we’ve gone and visited them and have been trying to keep up with up. It’s so hard for women that are once incarcerated to have a life outside again. I try to find out what’s going on with them as much as I can. CM: Besides OITNB, do you have any upcoming roles in other films or shows for your fans to see? SW: Right now we aren’t finished shooting season 3 and when we are shooting I’m such a person that likes to be in the moment so all I can think about is Orange and what is going on in the season. I don’t have anything lined up for after the season. I am just looking at things, auditioning things, reading scripts that I love, I would love to do a play but I’d also love to do a movie. I don’t really care about the medium now after I realize to

www.DLISTMAGAZINE.com

adversity in television. I just want to work good writers, good producers, people I mesh with and have great artistic integrity, work that moves people. What are your future goals in acting? Are you planning on pursuing any other type of careers? SW: Maybe down the line but not right now. I’m still new. I’m still just starting out with this show and has really catapulted me into the public conscious. It’s really very overwhelming for me so just trying to move through life graciously. Is it weird to be in the public eye? SW: Yes, it’s super weird. I think how some people can take to it is really amazing. like how they handle it. I think I’m a little awkward with it. Sometimes I forget I am a face some people will know and it’s very overwhelming and jarring for me but I’m trying. Is there anything you want to say to your fans? SW: It’s been so amazing to realize people love this show, love us, and our characters individually. I’ve never experienced this much kind of love from people I don’t even know, and I just want to say thank you to everyone.

DECIBEL ECHOSMITH

SOUND SHAPERS Interview by Charity Mainville Photos by Nicole Nodland

The family formed band, Echosmith, has risen in the charts at a rapid rate with their hit single, “Cool Kids” featuring smooth indie beats and relatable lyrics. The band originally made its debut a couple years ago with their first single, “Tonight We’re Making History” that was featured in an NBC promo for the 2012 Summer Olympics. The band may have taken some time to get noticed, but it seems for the future they will continue to make an impact as they go on tour in 2015, making a stop right here in Seattle in March.

ECHOSMITH DECIBEL

“We compare ourselves to people as human beings and it's not really a good thing to do. Be you - that's what makes you cool." You are all siblings; coming from a musical family, what influenced you to form the band and all of work together? ECHOSMITH: We grew up in a really musical environment and we never knew anything different. It was normal to have amazing drummers and musicians recording in our living room and we'd go to sleep hearing it. We could actually sleep through really loud drum recordings. We got together seven years ago to play a memorial walk/run and really loved it, so we decided to take it more serious and keep it going. Do you find it to be easier or harder working together and agreeing on things being siblings? E: Easier because we have similar backgrounds and tastes in how we think about creating music. We worked out the kinks a while ago. How did you come up with the name Echosmith? E: We loved the idea how a blacksmith shapes metal, so we thought that someone who shapes sounds is an Echosmith. “Cool Kids” was originally released in 2013, but didn’t reach its popularity until recently. What do you

think created the change from then and now? E: We purposely decided with the label and our management to do a slow build and tour for two years so that's exactly what we did. We wanted to really grow a real fan base so we took every gig and gave our all. It started to pay off. Once it started playing on radio all over the country people got really attached to it; we were really surprised but grateful too. It just connected in a way we couldn't have imagined. It's really cool. From the lyrics of “Cool Kids” one can understand its meaning as the desire to be recognized as a “popular kid.” What inspired the song or is there a story behind it? E: We related to the story that we all relate to which is we want to belong and matter. We compare ourselves to people as human beings and it's not really a good thing to do. Be you - that's what makes you cool. In October of 2013, you released your first album, Talking Dreams that includes “Cool Kids.” Does the album have the same sound and message throughout all the tracks? E: It's mostly above love, not just romantic love, but

love for everyone, friends, family and yourself. Now with your quick rise in the charts, how has the experience been with the traveling, recognition and appearing live on shows such as Conan? E: We started noticing that people recognized us a lot since the beginning of summer. It's really cool to realize that some people truly love what we do; it's humbling really. We love our fans! We just did The Tonight Show. That was crazy! Conan is amazing by the way! You have performed at numerous festivals including the Vans Warped Tour. What’s the difference in performing at large events versus a more intimate concert for your fans? E: The energy of a massive crowd is crazy, it's hard to explain actually but it's like a massive hug from literally thousands of people. Small shows are fun too. We love playing acoustic and that cool feeling in small venues. What are your future plans and goals for the band? E: We want to keep growing and sharing our music all over the world. We plan on touring all through 2015 and meeting people.

FILL IN THE BLANK Describe your sound in one word: Happy What are the top three artists that currently influence you: The Smiths, Coldplay, and The Killers What place or festival we would love to play at would be: Outside Lands If we could collaborate with any artist it would be: Coldplay When we think of Seattle, the first word that comes to mind is: Coffee

VISUAL VOICE

Interview by Jessica Drake Photos by Jessica Drake and courtesy Melanie Martinez

Soulful and creative artist, Melanie Martinez, graced the stage at El Corazon this past November with her mix of magical and strange music that made Seattle a perfect stop on her tour. In May of 2014, Melanie released her debut EP “Dollhouse,” while her album Cry Baby is slated for a spring 2015 release. Her creepy cool style and ability to cover so many genres in her own unique way captured an audience from her first audition on season three of The Voice and created a fan base for the 19 year old artist. As a photographer as well as a musician, Melanie includes stunning visuals to support the story telling of her music, inviting listeners into her world.

MELANIE MARTINEZ DECIBEL

How are you feeling about being back on tour? MELANIE MARTINEZ: It’s awesome; I am actually on the road right now! Do you get to work on photography while on tour? MM: I haven’t, but I just got this really cool Lomo camera from the Lomography team. They sent me this 35mm camera, and I am just taking pictures with that. It’s not like anything serious; I haven’t really had time. Congrats on the release of your “Dollhouse” EP, how would you describe the album to someone who has never heard your music? MM: It’s definitely like a giant storybook. Every song is a different story. They are all super mature subjects, but they are covered with little kid themes and every title is something from childhood. Your song “Carousel” is on the new American Horror Story trailer, it’s hauntingly perfect. What inspired you to create the song and then share it with them? MM: I wrote the song like a year ago and a few months after I found out they leaked what the theme was going to be for the season, I just thought that I should pitch it because it was perfect. I didn’t find out for a year, then a few days before it aired they told me. You have a lot of concept art in your work, what inspires you to create the visual themes in your music? MM: I think it’s really important to have the whole package. I feel like a song has to have a visual, but that’s just me. I just like to have the visual. I think it’s really important for people to see the bigger picture of what you see in your head. What kind of themes are we going to hear on your new album, Cry Baby? MM: Cry Baby is definitely a lot sad stories; I don’t know I guess people will find out, I don’t want to give anything away! Who/what inspires your personal style? MM: I am inspired by the way little girls dressed in the 50’s and a lot of Japanese fashion. What is your favorite creative space while on the road? MM: I’ve been voice noting melodies and stuff, and writing some lyrics. I just don’t have time to sit down. I am really hoping to write more. It’s weird because when you’re on tour you want to write and when you’re

www.DLISTMAGAZINE.com

writing you want to be on tour - it’s just like a mental thing. Do you have a favorite visual artist? MM: I have a lot; I really like Mark Ryden right now. What are your futures plans for music and visual expression? MM: I have a lot of weird photo plans for the album. I want each individual song to have its own thing. They are all separately important, but they should all go together. I feel like that is what makes an album. Your Seattle show sold out quickly, do you have plans to return soon? MM: Absolutely, I am really excited for this show. I am kind of freaking out about it. A couple of my friends are from Seattle, and they are always talking about how awesome it is there and how there are really cute vintage shops. Is there anything you want to see while in Seattle? MM: I got recommendations for vintage places right around the venue so I definitely want to check it out, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to fit anything into my packed schedule. What are you looking forward to playing the most at your show? MM: Right now I am really excited about two new songs that are going to be on the album that I am playing this tour, one is called “Mad Hatter” and the other is “Cake.” It’s really fun playing those because it’s new and people haven’t heard them so they are still listening. It’s cool and really fun. I love playing the one cover that I do, it’s a Patsy Cline song “She’s Got You” that one is definitely fun for me to sing. What is your favorite venue and where would you love to play you have not been yet? MM: We’re in the early stages; we played the Cambridge Room in Dallas, which was a really fun show. I am excited to see other places. I’m definitely excited to play at venues like the Constellation Room in Santa Ana; I loved playing there. I played there once, and it was my first sold out show so its going to be really cool going back there with new music.

DECIBEL FUTURISTIC POLAR BEARS

COOL BEATS Interview by Lauren Adams

Electronic dance music has hit major strides over the last few years with a constant flow of DJs fighting to get their sound heard. Streaming from the UK, the globe hopping trifecta Luke, Fran, and Rhys of the Futuristic Polar Bears, had their track heard loud and clear by Hardwell at the beginning of 2014 and were immediately signed to his label, Revealed. It didn’t stop there as their track “Back To Earth” hit number one on Beatport and their collaboration with Danny Howard, “Romani” peaked at number five in the Progressive House charts. They brought their beats to the US this past November with their first North America tour, stopping in Seattle on November 21st at Foundation Nightclub. With all their success in only one year, we are sure to hear more from the Bears as they continue to dominate the charts. “Taurus” has been hanging out in the top ten on Beatport for weeks now – congratulations. What goes in to creating a track like “Taurus”? LUKE: We met Thomas Newson in April and he was in the UK. We did a gig and had a chat with him. We sent a track off to Revealed and they really liked our breakdown. Thomas sent a track over and they really liked his drop. So Hardwell, in his infinite wisdom, bootlegged it and came back to both of our managers and said, “all right, let’s make it as a collab.” What’s the secret to your success this past year? FRAN: We try to keep as free flowing as we can. Luke and Rhys will kind of start an idea, send it over to me, I add my input. I love the process of mixing a track and making everything work, balancing. Rhys is one of the most gifted, topline writers that I have ever seen. We call him magic fingers. A lot of people said at the start

32

of this journey that it won’t work with three people and if anything it has been the opposite. There’s always one of us in the studio. There are always two of us on the road and we are always moving it around – the result is momentum. Any highlights of the first North American tour? L: Vegas at Marquee last week. We played a four-hour set and that was incredible. We are really looking forward to playing at Foundation. F: One moment was we had just finished working on a track in the hotel before we went to New City Gas [in Montreal] and all three of us were working on it. Rhys was on Skype and we turned down the music in New City Gas, which had about 3500 people and told everyone we just finished this record in the hotel before we came down and [they] went insane. It was just an amazing moment.

www.DLISTMAGAZINE.com

How do you keep crowds engaged? L: We can go and test it with the crowds every week. A lot of the time we will be writing stuff that’s half finished and we’re not completely sold on the idea, but it’s good to get crowd reaction and see what they like and feel. At the end of the day they’re the ones dancing to it. What's next? F: There’s a shift going on, everyone is shifting around music and what’s going to be the next big thing? Is it going to be bass tech? Is it big kick drums? Are big kick drums gone? Are they not gone? You have to keep really flexible to allow yourself room to maneuver. Anything you want to add? F: If you’ve not seen us, fucking come and see us!

DISTINCT JOEL MCHALE

LOCAL LOVE Written by James Zachodni Photo by Mark Davis/Getty Images

This past October Seattle was visited by one of its favorite sons, the famous Joel McHale. The UW alumni was in town to promote the new Canon Pixma Pro “City Senses” traveling event series. Joel’s photos were displayed along with three local photographers', Coco Aramaki, Patrick Bennett and Nick Hall, all showcasing some of their photography work at a pop-up gallery in Pioneer Square that focused on Seattle's favorite sport, football, in some awe inspiring images proudly printed on the amazing new Pixma Pro Printer that was on display for just one day.

42

Upon interviewing Joel, some due diligence was in order. Now don't get me wrong, I am a fan. I have watched The Soup semi-regularly for years. And who could forget his uber-douchey role in the movie, Ted? But there were a lot of things about Mr. McHale that I was not aware of. For instance, he played Tight End for the Huskies for two years as a walk-on or as Joel calls it “a bad player.” He got the chance to play with NFL legend, Mark Bruener and still has plenty of stories of him putting him on his ass. McHale was also very proud that his home state legalized marijuana and was quick to point out, “The

www.DLISTMAGAZINE.com

two states that legalized pot are the two super bowl teams last year. As you know, Peyton Manning is always high as a kite.” Joel has been busy as of late, continuing his ongoing roles on Community and also finishing up his 10th year as the host of The Soup. This holiday he is starring alongside the late Robin Williams in the comedy, A Merry Friggin' Christmas. (releasing November 7) When asked about Williams, McHale called him “one of the best ever, I miss him dearly and can't believe he is gone.”

FUTURE PLANS

It's hard to imagine Seattle growing even more than it has in the past two years. Forbes listed Seattle as #11 “Fastest Growing City in America.” With an annual population growth of 1.1% and one of the nation's lowest unemployment rate (5.78%), you can see the appeal and continued growth of the Emerald City. Here are a few milestones we will be seeing develop in front of our eyes over the next few years. BY JAMES ZACHODNI

WATERFRONT WAIT

Currently Seattle's waterfront is in a serious disarray. Between construction everywhere and the only worthwhile tourist attraction being The Great Wheel, there isn't much to currently get excited about down on the city's edge. However, this is all changing and we should hopefully see some exciting new developments over the next few years. Here is a quick timeframe on when things are supposed to be completed (hopefully with no further setbacks.) The Elliot Bay Seawall project is underway and phase 1 will be going through 2016. The 99 tunnel is also currently being worked on but isn't scheduled to be finished until the end of 2016 at which time the viaduct demolition will start in 2017. Hang tight fellow Seattleites just a bit longer.

44

SONIC RESURRECTION

The ongoing saga of bringing back the Seattle Supersonics has taken more plot twists than a soap opera. After the Donald Sterling fiasco in Los Angeles happened and Steve Ballmer bought the Clippers for $2 billion it looked like all was lost for Seattle's hopes of getting their team. However with the recent developments in Milwaukee, the Bucks may be a good candidate for a new host city. In May, the NBA approved the sale of the Bucks to new owners Wesley Edens and Marc Lasry for a then-NBA record $550 million. There was a contingency that they must have a new arena by November 2017. if a new arena was not approved, built, and ready the NBA had the right to buy back the team for $575 million. Well during this time there is not

www.DLISTMAGAZINE.com

even a location plotted for the new arena leaving many to speculate a conspiracy theory for the NBA to buy the team for $575 million and then turn around and sell the team to a group in Seattle for an estimated $1.6 billion. We will see how this pans out but with a potential $900 million profit to be made by bringing the team to Seattle, it will be hard to look past that possibility.

AGE OF AQUARIUM

As a part of the “viaduct madness” the beloved Seattle Aquarium is scheduled for a major facelift as well. The Aquarium is identified and affirmed as a key element in this new Waterfront Plan. It is targeted for $40-$50m of city investment, with an expansion space south of Pier 59 and under the Overlook Walk (which is a new and striking connection to the Pike Place Market) providing for doubling the square footage of the Aquarium over several phases of investment and construction. The construction of the Overlook Walk will vastly increase pedestrian traffic past the door of the Aquarium.

APPLE PICKING

In a very hush-hush move, Apple is quietly setting up engineering offices in Seattle. Speculation has it that the offices and its new northwest recruits are going to be working on building out Apple's Cloud infrastructure. Microsoft and Amazon's competitors have been encroaching on their territory. Google recently doubled the size of its campus in 2013 to work on cloud computing. And Rift VR—which is owned by Facebook—earlier this year opened an R&D lab in Seattle, hiring former Valve engineer, Atman Binstock as its chief architect. Small wonder Seattle's rent prices are climbing.

www.DLISTMAGAZINE.com

AMAZON RISING

The Amazonians have been slowly building their empire in downtown Seattle over the course of the past few years. In 2013 they were green lighted for their massive biosphere project that should be completed some time in 2016. The addition of Amazon's downtown campus will provide approximately 65,000 square feet of open green space and will accommodate the possibility for growth of new and mature trees. The biosphere offices are meant to mimic the context of a park scenario, encouraging collaboration and participation among colleagues and will be part of a green space known as ‘block 19' that will be accompanied a recreational playing field, dog park and ample landscaping.

DREAMS LADYBUG HOUSE

CELEBRATE EVERY DAY Written by Charity Mainville Photo by Jessica Drake

Every person has a dream; may it be of wealth, success, meeting that special someone or having a family. But there are those special people whose dreams are entirely selfless. One Seattle woman in particular, Suzanne Gwynn, is one of those people with a huge heart. She possesses such emotional passion that within minutes of meeting her it’s easy to understand why so many have jumped on board to make her dream for Ladybug House a reality. After being a registered nurse for over 30 years working with children, young adults and families in the oncology unit, Suzanne had witnessed families being separated from their loved ones for various unfortunate circumstances during their last days of life. While hospice is an option available to families, it relies on the family being the caretaker, which creates great stress instead of nurturing and supporting the family to enjoy their last moments with one another. In addition, hospice is only generally available for those considered to be terminal or within six months of death. An alternative option is palliative care, which focuses on improving quality of life during a serious illness at any stage, whether it be terminal or not, and integrates and supports the family throughout the process. In the event a child passes away, caring for the grieving family remains a key focus. There are multiple institutes and homes that offer palliative care outside of the hospital for adults, but currently there are only two palliative care homes for children and young adults in the United States, compared to 49 in the United Kingdom. Suzanne realized the need for children, adolescents and young adults to have a place for their families to be together during those last moments. “Ladybug House will be that home away from home offering the support and care of the hospital with all the comforts of home. We will support the entire family. Whether it is for a short stay for respite or for a longer stay during end-oflife. We’ll celebrate every day, every moment and every life.” Ladybug House will provide a new generation of palliative care homes in Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho and, for those who may not be able to afford palliative care, Ladybug House will offer free end-of-life care to children and young adults. Suzanne’s vision has spread through Seattle. Local companies such as NBBJ, Lydig, Leibsohn & Company, Perkins Cole, Foster Care, Garvey Schubert and Barer and End-of-Life Nursing Education

Consortium (ELNEC) have gotten involved and the core team has expanded from Suzanne to over 30 people volunteering their time. As every volunteer is important, a core group of those volunteers provide skills that are essential to bringing Ladybug House to life. Ladybug House’s Vice President and Secretary, Bernel Goldberg, is an expert in law and was awarded as the Non-profit Counsel of the Year by the Puget Sound Business Journal in 2013 and 2014, serving developmentally disabled children and adults along with being the General Counsel to the Seattle Art Museum. “I feel that everything I have done to this date, all I have experienced, every success and failure, has prepared me for one thing: Build Ladybug House.” Another board member (not pictured), Joel Fariss’ highly skilled team leadership in both small and large organizations and served as the founding chairman of Artist Reformation, a local nonprofit organization serving artists. When it comes to strategy and design, Jacob Simons is a key player in the creation of Ladybug House, bringing his expertise as a Design Practice Leader and Experience Design Director at NBBJ, a world-renowned design firm. “Nothing have I experienced so difficult as the loss of a loved one the blessing of life so clear yet the frailty and sadness so visceral. I cherish the final moments I have shared with my family and friends caring for those we so deeply love and pray for the day we can provide a home to all those facing these challenging times.” Molly Leonard brings eight years of experience in graphic design and will ensure brand consistency throughout all printed and digital materials and hopes to evolve her role into something more once Ladybug House opens. Carly Andrews and Olivia Arguinchona are volunteering their time and passion to help further the mission of Ladybug House with their dedication and experience in helping charity organizations. This upcoming year will be dedicated to raise awareness, funds, finding the land to to build the home, and develop the design. Construction is projected to start mid 2016 with doors open by 2018. Over the next three years, Ladybug House will need $30 million total to be raised. Once that goal is achieved, Ladybug House will be built on a wooded property nestled in a serene space amongst natural landscape standing by its motto, “If we cannot add days to the life of a child, we will add life to their days.”

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE NAME Suzanne came up with the name for Ladybug House from experiences that left a huge impact on her heart. One in particular, she admitted a young man, Hunter Simpson, who had been battling cancer for the past year and in the early hours of December 31 in 2005, he passed. As they carefully lifted Hunter into his body bag a ladybug landed on Hunter’s chest and it stayed with him on his journey. When Suzanne visited Hunter’s mom and shared the vision of Ladybug House. Her home was filled with ladybug items because when she was cleaning Hunter’s room after he passed, it too was filled with ladybugs. Over the years, ladybugs have appeared in the rooms of children who passed and not only in Suzanne’s experiences. There are many stories of ladybugs appearing during the passing of a loved one no matter the weather. In many cultures, ladybugs are considered protectors of the soul.

STADIUM PLACE DOWNTOWN INSIDER’S LOOK

ACCOLADES Stadium Place was awarded as "Best New Development: High Rise" in the United States by Multi-Housing News' Excellence Awards. ZGF Architects designed the project and had praises from the judges stating; "The sculptural form of the building activates the local neighborhood. Impressive glass curtain wall. Exciting amenity spaces."

We think every sports fan in Seattle was clamoring when news of Stadium Place, a new apartment/loft complex, was being built in the north parking lot of Century Link Field. The Wave, and its sister building Nolo (acronym for North Lot) have opened shop and are quickly filling up with Seattle sports fans and downtown revelers alike. The adjoining buildings have plenty of units for residents (The Wave with 333 and Nolo with 163) and also house a myriad of mixed use spaces that include its very own neighborhood market, Cone & Steiner that is stocked with fresh fruits and vegetables, meats and seafood, fermented and cured foods and even ice cream. What Stadium Place is known for most, outside of its insane proximity to Century Link Field is its amenities. The building has three, yes three, rooftop decks. Of course they are all adorned with multiple gas grills, fire pits and places for Fido to relieve himself. The buildings are also decked out with Fiber Optic wiring for blazing fast internet, a spa-like fitness center and club houses that

give you all the room you need to host your next Seahawks game day party. The living units themselves are as impressive as the building and its amenities. No corner was cut in the finishes that include air conditioning, hard woods, stainless-steel and energy efficient appliances, walk-in closets, floor-to-ceiling windows, custom self-closing cabinets and granite countertops. Stadium Place is definitely a great place to live. Next time you are at a Hawks game imagine chanting “SEA-HAAAAAWKS” from the privacy of your own home. Ahhhhh...music to our ears. www.stadiumplace.com 201 S King St Seattle, WA 98104 The Wave (206) 347-8177 Nolo (206) 855-5482

L.A.

Looking for a low-cost getaway with some mild weather, beaches and more things to do than you could possibly think of accomplishing in a few days? Check out Los Angeles in the winter for all of the above. Whether you are dragging the little ones along or taking your summer love on a romantic holiday trip, LA will satisfy all of your cravings whether it's impeccable shopping at The Grove, a fun-filled day at Disneyland or some celebrity sighting during award-season.

TRAVEL TIPS

Travel Time: Plane: 2 hr 27 min Train: 35 hr 25 min Automobile: 16 hr 29 min Even though a drive or train isn't out of the question, flying is your best option for time and budget. If you are flexible on your travels and book it at least 14 days in advance you can find flights as low as $160 roundtrip. Unless you love riding a train, this is the least favorable option as not only will it take you a day and half to get there, but also the average round-trip price is around $300. If flying isn’t your forte, then hop in your car, grab a friend and take a fun road trip. If time isn’t an issue, drive along the coast of California on Pacific Hwy 1 and take in the view.

GETTING AROUND

Los Angeles is one massive city and if you want to check out different neighborhoods walking is not an option. There are plenty of taxis and Uber is now in the area as well. If you’re planning on traveling around the inner city or heading down to Long Beach, the Metro Rail goes to most of the major areas. You can also rent a car for as low as $6.99 a day, just make sure to double check rates because some charge per mile. DESTINATION TIP • If you are staying at a hotel and decide to rent a car you will be charged for valet. Most hotels charge around $30-$40 per night so the rental car may be cheap, but tacking on the valet may end up being more than you bargained for. Opt for the general hotel parking lots or even street parking will save you tons of money.

DESTINATION TIP • Los Angeles has three different airport options to fly into, Los Angeles, Burbank and Ontario. Southwest flies into each one so make sure to check the fare for each for the best deal.

REST

There are multiple options on where to stay in Los Angeles. It’s best to get a hotel in the main neighborhood where you will be hopping around to avoid having to deal with LA's infamous traffic. If you are staying downtown, Hollywood or West Hollywood a hotel will most likely be your best option. If you want to stay around the beaches check out sites that offer house or condo rentals as there are a lot of vacations homes that offer lower rates during the winter season. (www.vrbo.com) DESTINATION TIP • If you want to stay in a luxury hotel with a cheaper rate, than naming your own price on Priceline (www.priceline.com) is your best. For example, there are only three 5-star hotels in the Hollywood area so check the normal rates on each and then start the bid at 50% less. You won’t need to know the name of the hotel because you will know your options ahead and be guaranteed to get at least one of the three.

DINE

With the city being a melting pot of transplants, any food you crave is available from a great burger to sushi and of course Mexican. Each cuisine has fine, swanky, hole in the wall places and ocean views along the beaches to choose from. If you’re looking for the LA classics, Pink’s Hot Dogs has been around since 1939 and still has lines around the corner. Another classic and open 24 hours is Mel’s Drive-In on Sunset Blvd where you are sure to run into a lot of late-night partygoers

DRINK

LA has just as many places to have fun and party as it does dining options. Karaoke bars are a dimea-dozen. Don’t worry if you can’t sing they won’t judge… too much, but the ones that can sing will blow you away. As for the clubs, some are easy to find with their lighted marquees and there are those that are nestled in alleyways without a name on the door. Whichever club you go to, make sure you know somebody there or you won't be getting in no matter who you are.

DRESS

If you like to shop until you drop, you have gone to the right city. If your shopping budget is unlimited then make sure to head to the famous Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills or the shops on Robertson Blvd in West Hollywood. If that is out of your price range, take a stroll outside and enjoy the weather at The Grove in Wilshire or Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica; between the two they have every major retail chain you can think of. If you are an avid fashionista then head downtown and check out LA’s fashion district.

STAR GAZING

HOLLYWOOD LIFE

DESTINATION TIP

• If you want to eat and “be seen” amongst the celebrities, the restaurants in West Hollywood is the place to go. Restaurants such as The Ivy on Robertson Blvd, Nobu on La Cienega and Fig & Olive at Melrose Place are sure spots to get a glimpse of your favorite celeb, but remember they are people too so respect their ability to eat in peace.

• Classic Hollywood hotel Chateau Marmont, located on Sunset Blvd, has been a long time hot-spot for some of the biggest names in Hollywood to party at. Rumor has it that you are likely to see a celebrity there everyday when you book a reservation for one of its bungalows. Currently another place to party with the stars is SBE’s Greystone Manor, but just like a Hollywood celebrity, one day you are hot, the next day you are not. Always ask the locals what the current “go-to” club is upon arriving.

• If you like to shop cheap and chic there are multiple areas with affordable independent boutiques all lined up for you such as Venice Beach’s Boardwalk or the eastern end of Melrose Avenue.

DRIVE CADILLAC ELR

ITS ELECTRIC!

If you are anything like me, you never bought into the whole "electric car" thing. Sure the Prius came out years ago, every Hollywood A-lister owns one, but blah; is that what we have to look forward to in the future of electric cars? Well times-are-a-changing my friends. No longer do you have to labor to love the plethora of generic electrics on the market. The "king of luxury," Cadillac, has put their hat into the ring of electric cars, and we must say, thank goodness! With typical Cadillac luxury and handsome styling, the 2014 ELR is a true head turner and will have its gas-guzzling predecessors wishing for a lithium battery too. by JAMES ZACHODNI CUE SYSTEM

THE EXTRAS

Cadillac has been a name synonimous with luxury since its inception. However the ELR is going to be the new standard for modern elegance that will pave the way for a new era at Cadillac in its refined and very sophisticated styling both inside and out.

One of the amazing features of the ELR was the Regen on Demand that allows the driver to temporarily regenerate energy from the ELR’s momentum into electricity that can be stored in the battery pack for later use. This is done by simply using a pair of steering wheel paddles to break instead of the typical foot pedal.

I have never felt more in tune with what was going on around me while driving the ELR. Cadillac’s advanced active safety features, including Safety Alert Seat (slight vibrations that warn you of getting too close to objects), Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning, along with available Side Blind Zone Alert with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert.

One of my biggest fears of going electric was always the worry of having a lack of power. There is no way this car could match a beefy V-8 right? The EREV propulsion system in the ELR put those worries to rest real quick as it propelled me swiftly with its 295 lb.-ft. of torque.

No expense was spared in the interior of the ELR. A blend of carefully selected materials, including available carbon fiber and ultra-premium Opus semi-aniline leather seating adorn the ergonomic cockpit. The highlight for me was the CUE system, an eight-inch LCD touch screen integrated in the top of the central instrument panel. Imagine an iPad that controls everything and has all the vital info about your car you will ever need.

54

During my week with the ELR, I was pleased to notice how long a charge lasts. With a driving range of 340 miles, you can easily make most every commute without a recharge. Of course if your juice runs low, the ELR switches to gas without hesitation.

DESIRE WILLIAM EDGE

EDGE OF GLORY

William Edge is a master in the salon and beauty industry. Edge has opened six salons nationwide and recently added his seventh here in Seattle teaming up with award-winning stylist Lisa Vann. His passion drives his success and keeps it going by delivering the best experience to “every guest, every time.”

Written by Charity Mainville Photo by Sara Stathas

What made you decide to get into the hair business? WILLIAM EDGE: Growing up in the salon business and seeing the struggles my mom went through as a single parent, I never really saw myself in the beauty industry. I initially entered beauty school to help get myself through college. However, around day three of beauty school, I knew this was what I was meant to do. That weekend, I drove home to tell my mom I was going to be a hairdresser and she cried saying, “I had such high hopes for you.” I let her know what we needed to do was commit to making a difference and showing there is a better way. The commitment to elevating the standards of the industry helped me create my personal purpose statement that has not changed for over 20 years – “to be to the beauty professional what Sassoon is to the haircut.” This purpose is what drives me to stay energized and relevant on a daily basis. What is one of your most memorable experiences with a client? WE: I have had so many incredible experiences with wonderful people, I don’t know how to pick just one. I can however, share what makes them so special to me. In having a clientele for over 20 years, you go through the roller coaster of life with them. As their hairdresser, you build a strong bond of trust and, in many ways, a deep caring. I have very special memories about being the one they choose to let you cut their child’s hair for the first time and then be their hairdressers as they grow up. I have been very grateful to be able to be there for my guests that needed a break in their crazy schedule and to refuel them. I have been particularly honored to help my guests through the tough times that life delivers from being a support in a divorce, being a shoulder in the loss of a loved one or to being able to be someone

56

they know cares when we have to do a head shave and prepare for the effects of particular illnesses. It is such an honor to be in the lives of so many wonderful people and to call so many amazing people friends. Where and when did you open your first salon? WE: When I started out in the business, I was fortunate enough to be included in a team of two brothers from Los Angeles who were the number one show team at the time. This allowed me to travel all over the world and headline major events. With this exposure, I was able to meet numerous beauty professionals who were searching for some answers. I would always hear from them, “well, that might work in LA, but you don’t know what it is like in another city.” There was always an excuse why it wouldn’t work. I knew if I was going to impact the industry, I would need to do it from middle America. I moved to my hometown and I opened the first salon in New Braunfels, Texas. It is a small Texas town that is by no means the fashion mecca of the south, however, it gave me the opportunity to prove that it isn’t about where you are but it is more about what you do. How do you feel the hair industry has evolved over the years? WE: If you look at our industry, it is hard to say that it has evolved in a positive way. The evolution that has taken place has been based around the decline of the craft and the importance of continued training and being a part of successful teams. The students are not being taught the reality of how long it takes to become great at this craft. I bet your readers have more horror stories than they do celebrations when it comes to their salon experiences. If we are going to change the

www.DLISTMAGAZINE.com

outcome, we have to change the rules of the game. I feel passionate about not promising my team a bright future all along knowing that it won't happen if we follow tradition and the business model that has had over 50 years of practice to prove it doesn't work. How did you come about bringing your brand to Seattle? WE: I have been coming to Seattle for quite a few years to work with Lisa Vann and the team. Over those years I have built a strong, trusting relationship with Lisa and worked with her to create a plan to take her salon to the next level. In April, I received a call from Lisa that put into motion the idea of joining forces and bringing the things that has made William Edge salons so successful to Seattle. In addition, Lisa and I combined our reputations as educators in order to take Vann.Edge out into the world. We have already done New York Fashion Week, multiple hair/fashion shows, Northwest Hairstyling Awards, multiple fashion shoots and are planning our professional texture line. This arrangement brings the best of both worlds together and creates a win-win relationship. What is your future plan for Seattle? WE: Our plans for Seattle is to duplicate what William Edge salons have done in our other regions. With mine and Lisa’s education background and our program in place, our technical skills will always be exemplary. However, our main goal is to become known as the premiere customer service salon and make sure the guest is our focus. As our philosophy takes root we will be looking for more locations as well as introducing our Prodedgy training salon model to the Seattle area. All in all, Seattle is very exciting for our company and our team.
