EDUCATIONAL & GALLERY SPACE For this project I was asked to design an educational and gallery space for Mounds State Park (3000 sq. ft).

The project was a continuation of our aperture + veil studies as well as our solid modeling experiments. My project concept was based on tectonic moves , shifts in the landscape, and framing important views into the landscape. My project attempts to sit gracefully into the landscape blurring boundaries between ground and sky. The programing of the building included the following:

aVOIDING SOLID / SOLID VOID BOOLEAN OPERATIONS EXERCISE

Working in Rhino, the assignment required us to start with a rectangular volume of 6” x 3.5”x 3.5”. The assignment required us to worked with syntax (rules) and semantics (meanings) to generate architectural effects. The boolean operation process required us to have a minimum of 40% solid surface. Additionally, all six (6) sides of the volumes had to have voids. Adding and subtracting out my personal aesthetic, the final objects accepts and transforms sun/moon light. Below are the (3) boolean operations systems included in the process:

SHALOM HEALTH CARE CENTER LOBBY RENOVATIONS

On behalf of the w/purpose consulting team I was given the opportunity to prepare a proposal for the renovation drawings for the Shalom Health Care Center lobby. Shalom is a professional primary care service organization that provides health services and wellness education to members of the Indianapolis community.

As part of the design team, I was responsible for working with the client to establish general planning of the new additions/renovations which took the form of drawn concept diagrams, renderings and floor plan details.

While working on the project, I managed a design team of three to produce client presentation boards and construction documentation. All selection of materials, case work, finishes and details were selected based on client standards to meet patient care efficiency and to meet both local and state requirements.

CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTATION I provided technical support as a design associate for an Indianapolis based architecture studio called Array Architects + Interiors Inc. During my time at Array, I contributed with the drafting and development of construction drawings for various projects, including the development of CD’s for Lumber Liquidators retail stores in multiple locations around the Mid-West.

One of my main responsibilities involved developing accurate construction drawings to ensure a safe structure and environment for users. CONCORD BUILDING

MAPLE CROSSING NEIGHBORHOOD REVITALIZATION At the center of the Midtown area is Maple Crossing and a 84-year-old building named The Concord. At the northwest corner of 38th & Illinois St., this 10,000 square-foot building has been the talk of the neighborhood for years. In the past, the building was home to a cigar shop, drug store, restaurant and residential apartments.

This was so up until, Midtown Indy purchased the building in 2016, it had been largely vacant for more than two decades leaving the two-story space neglected and in need of restoration.

A series of public listening sessions were organized to redetermine the community’s vision for the space. Since the spring of 2017, I have worked alongside Midtown Indy to bring this historic building back to life. My role in the schematic design was to participate in on client meetings, make physical 3D models, help develop digital models and produce construction documents.

PEDESTRIAN SAFETY RAIL

OUTDOOR PROTOTYPE & FABRICATION W/purpose was commissioned by Midtown Indy to complete a “Pedestrian Safety Rail” prototype. This project aimed to compliment the new Red Line rapid transit development while addressing challenges that arose from the new project. Residents and businesses directly impacted by the new transit infrastructure updates supported the positive changes however, they expressed safety concerns that directly influence the comfort of patron’s outdoor eating experience.

Together, local businesses funded the exploration of a solution using physical barriers that are functional and attractive. As part of the design team, I contributed to the development of early 3D models, resin prototypes, and schematic design diagrams for the safety rails. Additionally, I welded, painted, and fabricated the different elements of the protection rial to ensure a proper design by developing a prototype to scale.

HOLLY CROSS iMOCA POP UP ART EXHIBITION In the summer of 2018, w/purpose was invited by the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art (iMOCA) to participate on a small exhibition of outdoor installation. W/purpose imagined a temporary yet highly public outdoor installation that combined 2 of our offices favorite elements – light and motion. The studio wanted to celebrate the biodiversity of a waterway by designing a method to “illuminate” or draw attention to a unique cast of characters – Bugs.

My role in the team was to design, fabricate and install 100 crafted acrylic invertebrates that transformed the appearance of an existing urban infrastructure element – in this case a metal guard rail – as the platform to share a larger narrative about the magic of nature and insects. Highlighting the newly inducted State of Indiana Insect, the Lighting Bug. The design of their magnet base and unique lively forms, made for an ideal vehicle in expanding the city’s pop-up art story.

CENTER CITY “PLANNING TO STAY” CAPACITY BUILDING PLAN

In the winter of 2018, w/purpose was invited by Memorial Community Development Corporation to participate on a seven month “Center City: Planning to Stay” capacity building campaign for the Baptist Town neighborhood in Evansville, Indiana. The campaign’s main goal was to work alongside community stakeholders to organize public forums, workshops and meetings to inform, educate and build capacity around a potential new “Center City” comprehensive plan.

My objectives for this project were to organize and meet with key community leaders, organizations and individuals to overview and create an early plan for improving the quality of life in their neighborhood through consideration of neighborhood identity and the sense of place/community. My direct involvement in the project facilitated the compilation of a fifty page booklet that outlined existing challenges and opportunities in the area. The document also contained, maps, images and supporting materials that promoted the community’s vision.

In 2014, Edsall & Associates LLC was retained by the City of Hilliard to update the City’s 1993 Recreation & Parks Master Plan. The 10 year vision Master Plan prepared by the E&A team involved the analysis of existing park land, recommendations for future park sites, preparation of concept plans for numerous existing public parks, the design of a city wide multi-use path master plan and guiding principles for future open space development.

As part of the team, I was involved in monthly meetings with members of the community and 13 members of an appointed advisory committee, extensive interviews/focus groups, charettes, public meetings and a statistically valid survey. Furthermore, my participation included the production of analysis, design development of graphics, and the assembly of the final report for City of Hilliard.

In 2018, w/purpose was commissioned by Insight Development Corporation, a nonprofit development arm of the Indianapolis Housing Agency (IHA), to create a “Design Catalog” for the Northwest Quality of Life Plan area in Indianapolis. The catalog’s intent was to establish a uniform set of design guidelines and site standards suitable for developers, contractors and/or owners wanting to improve their property in the area.

During the course of the project, I was responsible for developing a catalog that provided information regarding facade, site furniture, landscape and hardscape improvements for the area. Additionally, I was responsible for documenting, evaluating and implementing the catalog’s guidelines into specific properties.

For each participating property, I had to create a workbook that included important call outs, observations and documentation that outlined identified improvements in compliance with the “Design Catalog” principles.

CITY OF CARMEL RIVER ROAD - PHASE II LANDSCAPE & ROUND-ABOUT ENHANCEMENTS

This landscape and round-about enhancement project, in the City of Carmel, involved the completion of a new round-about intersection along River Road and Cherry Creek Blvd. The project was part of a three year concentrated infrastructure improvement program that started in 2016.

The completion of the project will result in better storm water management and drainage improvements not only in this intersection but throughout the City. My inputs to the design team included creative design solutions for the landscape design and engineering of the round-about; which were later distributed to consultants and City leaders. Additionally, my work included the development of illustrated streetscape options for the client, as well as final construction and detail plans for INDOT permitting. The final design included street trees, ground plane landscape and a masonry retaining wall at the center of the roundabout.

RAIL DEPOT STORMWATER MANAGEMENT DEMONSTRATION The Edsall & Associates LLC team was hired by the City of Mount Vernon as part of the Surface Water Improvement Fund through the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, to prepare the design and construction documents. The site is an existing parking area adjacent to the recently renovated CA&C railway depot.

As one of the project designers, I was involved in all aspects of planning design and construction documentation.

The project’s design reduced the overall amount of runoff from the impervious parking area by promoting infiltration, detaining excess stormwater so that it could be released at a slower rate, and improved the water quality of runoff that eventually reaches the nearby Kokosing State Scenic River. My contributions to the stormwater treatment train also included best management practices involving turf areas, bioretention/ infiltration swales and rain gardens planted with native vegetation.

CERAMICS 101

FROM ARCHITECTURE TO CLAY Clay is one of the most universal materials known to humans. Civilizations from all over the world have used it to make art as well as functional objects. My ceramic work is a fusion of art shapes, lines, and forms highly influenced by my background in Architecture. Creating ceramic pieces, supplements my creativity and allows me to express my imagination using a new media. I use the flexibility of clay as an opportunity to create fluid design narratives.

MY NEW CANVAS My journey in metalworking and woodworking began with my involvement with Ruckus Maker Space, a local business incubator. As a ‘Resident Maker’ in the shared space, I participated with the Latina Welding Guild, a nonprofit organization whose goal is to empower women professionally, creatively, and economically through welding. My ongoing participation with the guild has provided me with advance welding skills and has sparked my curiosity in furniture designs that incorporate Architecture fundamentals. It encourages me to see furniture as more than a functional and commercial piece.

RECLAIMED TABLE The “Reclaimed Table”, was designed using a rare piece of wood salvaged from a 1960’s Indiana High School (Arlington High School). Once used by the design studio w/purpose, for a series of unique and custom architectural installations, I was able to come across the remains of a salvaged Longfleaf Pine (Pinus palustris) wood.

I was inspired by its strength, colors, and durability of the material and designed a bookshelf. The “Reclaimed Table’s” primary design method included wood and metal. The versatility found in metal welding plus the addition of the Longleaf wood makes for a minimalistic and functional piece of furniture. Recycling in design projects is not a new concept but by choosing reclaimed materials for my furniture design projects, I can obtain high quality materials as well as become more environmentally conscious.
