TRI-PAR PAVILION GRASSHOPPER | RHINO | 6-AXIS LASER CUTTER Team: Nick Bruscia

This 5-day design/build workshop utilized 2” x 3/8” tube steel and a 7-axis laser cutter. All joints were designed to be attached and hold in place without the assistance of welds, bolts, or any other third party attachments.

Rotation of Secondary Lines - As the lines rotate, the corners of the squares pull apart and a new line is formed keeping them connected. The newly formed lines increase in size and rotate eventually becoming the secondary lines in the new squares. The same process goes in reverse starting from the left.

Rotation of Main Lines - The four main lines start as one complete square and 1/4 of the four surrounding squares. The lines gradually rotate around their respective center points until reaching 90°, at this point each of the four lines make up 1/2 of four squares.

Transitions - In these transition zones the left line (of the four main lines) stays at the angle of the previous form, the other three are rotated to the angle of the next form.

PARQUET DEFORMATION The first part of this project was to select and analyze a hand-drawn parquet deformation with no computational assistance. I broke the pattern that I chose into three main deformation components as follows (shown to the left):

NATURAL DISPLACEMENT (previous page - left) The displaced, or flexed, position takes up 200% of the area of the relaxed state of the system.

AUGMENTED DISPLACEMENT (previous page - right) The displaced, or flexed, position takes up 750% of the area of the relaxed state of the system. The length of the armateur dictates the amount of displacement.

EMERGENCE OF THE FIBER-HINGE The fiber-hinge came about from experimenting with making the augmented displacement invisible and instilling memory with-in it. The sixth part of this experiment (bottom left) brought forth the first ‘fiber-hinge.’ The goal became to eliminate, or at least minimize, the square geometry in the system and let the fibers take over.

A new geometry is formed as a single strand morphs from the resting position to the deployed position. This geometry emerges from the vectors formed from a set of points on the resting fiber to their respective points on the elongated fiber. This geometry starts to suggest spatial characteristics such as cover, positive/negative space, and spatial division.

When the fiber is mirrored it intersects the initial one resulting in the creation of a more complex geometry. Both inside and outside space start to emerge as well as directionality.

Two of the driving principals of this system are the packing of the system and its deployability. These stemmed from early research on auxetic systems with a particular focus on space filling.

This system takes a form that is very elequant and takes up a very small area and deploys it resulting in 3-dimensional expansion which takes up much more space.

When this geometry is deployed there is an extra space that emerges between the two units which suggests another panel to the system; that is to say it creates a higher packing-to-deploying density ratio.

1 The first study in expanding the system behaved quite unexpectedly... in a really good way.

Both units in the system deployed simultaneously as opposed to one at a time as hypothesized.

5 The second expansion study had less satisfactory results, although there was an adequate ratio of collapsedto-open positions.

The amount of units connected together caused the system to exhibit net-like characteristics causing significant loss of structure and stability.

1 The first largescale prototype withheld the operable characteristics of the small-scale studies while demonstrating a more rigid structure.

Although a greater amount of force was required to deploy the system, the deployment was just as smooth and easy.

The large-scale expansion study, again, showed loss of rigidity with the addition of a decrease in the ease of maneuverability. Although the space-filling goal was met, the rigidity and deployability goals were not met.

MODULAR CONSTRUCTION A ore-fabricated kit-of-parts (based on traditional concrete culverts) allow for rapid and easy installation.

LIVING ACCOMMODATIONS This residential complex consists of 11 base units and 24 flex units that are connected by hotel style doors which are locked or unlocked to accommodate the needs of the tenants.

BASE UNITS Equivalent to a studio apartment with the option to add up to four flex units.

FLEX UNITS Available to be rented as dorm rooms, private studies, studio space or storage units.

RED LINE MUSIC LOUNGE A speakeasy style music lounge nestled in-between the two residential wings. No signage and a hidden entry sequence set the mood to Buffalo’s new gritty hole-in-the wall lounge.

STUDY MODELS 1 Foam modeling was used for rapid formal iterations for this building.

The foam also allowed for these models to be presentaion-ready.

DOCUMENTATION This project consisted of three phases; analyze, document, and represent. The analysis consisted on taking a photo every five seconds while riding a bike from Koenji station to Shimokitazawa Station. The documentation (as exhibited on these pages) was sectional representations extracted from the photos. Finally, a model was constructed to represent both the analysis and documentation.

Threshold Volumetrics The final part of the analysis was looking at the abbreviated negative space of the thresholds. If the project were to go forward, these negative space conglomerations would be examined and manipulated to see how the outcome would alter the way buildings are manifested on the streets.
