Arrested

in San Francisco March Hotels Across United States Reach Agreements with Unions

Dozens of hotel workers on strike were arrested for civil disobedience in a demonstration that marched through downtown San Francisco on October 30.

The 85 demonstrators included striking hotel workers and supporters and “were part of a protest calling on hotels to settle contracts and end weeks-long hotel strikes” that involved hundreds of demonstrators, according to Unite Here, the hotel union organizing the nationwide strike actions.

The arrested demonstrators were released the same day and charged with disorderly conduct, a Unite Here representative told USAE

The arrests occurred at approximately 5 p.m. as union members sat in the middle of Powell Street, next to Union Square, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The march began next to the Hilton Union Square, the city’s largest hotel.

“I take my job very seriously because I am the eyes and ears on the street, and I know that guests’ expe-

Explore Asheville Aiding in Hurricane Helene Recovery Chefs, Musicians Join Relief Effort

Following the devastation of Hurricane Helene in North Carolina, Explore Asheville is playing a key role in the recovery effort.

Explore Asheville pledged $1 million as the presenting sponsor of Concert for Carolina in October. The benefit concert raised more than $24.5 million in hurricane relief, with Explore Asheville’s sponsorship split between the following charities: Samaritan’s Purse, Manna Food Bank,

Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC, and Eblen Charities.

The destination organization had already established the Always Asheville Fund to help small independent travel and hospitality businesses throughout Asheville and Buncombe County recover. Explore Asheville seeded the fund with $300,000.

Awoke said he recalled a specific incident while working at the hotel when he “was short staffed on a shift.” The lack of coverage resulted in a guest’s property being stolen “right in front of the hotel,” he said.

Donald Trump’s Re-Election: A Survey of Association Reactions

Associations inside and outside of the meetings industry are making their voices heard regarding the re-election of Donald J. Trump as the 47th President of the United States.

Some offered their congratulations and took the opportunity to begin conversations on how they hope to work with the new administration. Others, hoping for a different outcome, pushed back on Trump policies while doubling down on their commitment to their constituencies.

PCMA and ASAE have both recently featured political rivals of Trump at their most prominent events. In January, former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who battled Trump as the Democratic nominee for president in 2016, spoke at Convening Leaders in San Diego. Liz Cheney, a former Republican Congresswoman and pointed critic of Trump, will speak at the 2025 conference in Houston.

The Safe Hotels Act now requires hotels be licensed— which costs $350 and is valid for two years—-in order to operate in the city, schedule continuous staffing on site, maintain clean guest rooms by offering daily housekeeping services unless a guest declines, supply their core employees with panic buttons, and train them

in human trafficking recognition. For operators of hotels with more than 100 guest rooms, staff working on property will need to be directly employed by the hotel, while hotels with less than 100 rooms are exempt from this requirement.

The bill’s sponsor, Councilor Julie Menin, said the passage of the act “marks a historic step towards enhancing public safety and ensuring worker protection in the city’s hotel and hospitality industry.”

American Apparel & Footwear Association in Step with Soles4Souls

The American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) is asking that the next time you visit a DSW, Crocs, or Famous Footwear, keep an eye out for the tall cardboard bins from Soles4Souls.

Through various means, including collecting shoes at events, AAFA is supporting Soles4Souls’ philanthropic endeavors that provide relief for people in crisis, create opportunities to start businesses in developing countries, ensure kids get a new pair of athletic shoes for education and extracurricular activities; and divert shoes and clothing out of landfills.

“Collecting shoes for Soles4Souls at our events embodies AAFA’s commitment to making a meaningful impact beyond the business world,” Corinne Suder, Vice President, Events and Programming, AAFA. “It’s an opportunity for us to bring our industry together to support those in need, while fostering a sense of community and responsibility. Each pair of shoes collected reflects our dedication to

helping others and shows how small actions at our events can create lasting change.”

During 2024, AAFA has collected 165 pairs of gently used shoes at smaller seminars in California; Washington, D.C.; Pennsylvania; Oregon; and Michigan.

Shoes donated to Soles4Souls at AAFA events go towards the former’s 4Opportunity program, which creates opportunities for entrepreneurs in low-income countries, such as Haiti and Honduras, to start and sustain small businesses selling shoes. Soles4Souls entrepreneurs have been able to increase their household income by more than 200%, which is more than five times the international poverty line.

During the past two years, AAFA also participated in the Soles4TheDistrict campaign in the Beltway region. In total, that campaign raised more than $230,000 to provide new shoes to 11,500 children in the Washington, D.C., area. For every $20 donated, a new pair of athletic shoes was purchased for a child in need.

Over the past two years, AAFA team members also had the chance to volunteer at a local elementary school in D.C. in 2023, and in Maryland in 2024, delivering new shoes to hundreds of elementary students.

“Without a good pair of shoes, kids feel embarrassed, discouraged, or left out—simply because they lack something most of us take for granted,” Suder said. “New shoes allow kids to participate more fully in school and free up resources their caregivers can use for other necessities.”

Destinations International, City Destinations Alliance Unveil Global Accessibility Report

Destinations International (DI) and City Destinations Alliance (City DNA), the alliance of tourist boards, convention bureaus, and destination management organizations in Europe, on November 4 issued a “Global Accessibility Report.”

The collaborative research effort offers “a foundational understanding of the global initiatives around accessibility,” the organizations state. The report was released at the GDS-Forum & City DNA Autumn Conference

ratified new contracts with their respective hotels, including Boston, where more 765 Hilton workers voted to ratify new contracts on October 31.

The hotels where contracts were ratified in Boston include the Hilton Boston Logan Airport and Hilton Boston Park Plaza hotels—where workers were on strike for 24 days—and the DoubleTree Hilton Boston-Cambridge and Hampton Inn & Homewood Suites Boston Seaport hotels.

Workers at these hotels will see the same improvements to their contracts as won by workers at Omni properties

2024.

“Accessibility matters not only to visitors but also to local communities, and destination organizations are starting to recognize the significance of providing inclusive facilities, products, and services for everyone,” said Sophia Hyder Hock, DI Chief Inclusion Officer. “It’s not just a key factor for a thriving destination—it’s the ethical choice. We hope this report will help the tourism industry advance this critical effort.”

The document shares insights from a survey fielded in early 2024 of 92

Approximately 1,800 workers at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, the largest hotel on the island state, voted to ratify a new contract agreement on November 4. They returned to work on November 5 following 40 days of strikes.

The new contract includes “significant wage increase, affordable health care, and staffing and workload protections,” Unite Here said.

The union said more strike action is possible. Almost 2,000 hotel workers remain on strike at five Hilton, Hyatt, and Marriott properties in San Francisco, and more strikes have been authorized at hotels in Boston, Massachusetts; Honolulu and Kawaii, Hawaii; Oakland, San Diego, San Francisco and San Mateo County, California; and Seattle, Washington, according to the union.

Adam Daniel Kinzinger, a former Republican Congressman who voted for Trump’s impeachment, appeared during ASAE’s Annual Meeting & Exposition this August in Cleveland.

“This week’s election has released a range of emotions,” the association said on social media. “Some may feel hopeful, while others may feel disenchanted. Whatever your feelings, please know that they are valid and respected within the ASAE community. “As we look to the future, ASAE is ready to proactively support the incoming Administration and Congress in crafting policies that recognize and strengthen the essential contributions associations make to the economy, workforce development, and communities across the country.

“Before the elections, ASAE engaged both presidential campaigns with letters highlighting the critical role of trade and professional associations in their policy agendas. ASAE also raised concerns about the future of tax policy, especially as key provisions of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act are set to expire in 2025. We’re closely monitoring this landscape, as the tax-exempt sector may face increased scrutiny to offset the cost of new tax legislation. We anticipate this issue will need the united attention of our entire community.

Associations serve as places where people come together with shared purpose, and ASAE is dedicated to supporting our members and association community with excellence, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to inclusivity for all.”

We stand ready to work with the new administration to realize America’s full potential.”

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce promised to partner on policies spurring economic growth.

U.S. Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Suzanne P. Clark said: “We congratulate President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance, along with the members of the incoming 119th Congress and state and local elected officials across America.

“With the election behind us, it is time to focus on the important work of advancing an economic growth agenda that creates opportunities for businesses, families, and individuals to achieve the American dream. We look forward to working with the TrumpVance administration and Republicans and Democrats in Congress to preserve pro-growth tax policies, bring regulatory relief to business, harness the power of AI to drive American innovation, and expand an all-of-theabove energy production policy.”

U.S. Travel Calls on Congress to Pass Critical Disaster Relief by Thanksgiving

Seeking to assist regions devastated by Hurricanes Helene and Milton as soon as Congress reconvenes, U.S. Travel Association called on Congressional leaders to pass a disaster supplemental appropriations bill by Thanksgiving.

A letter from U.S. Travel notes that in the states hit by the storm the travel industry accounts for more than 2 million jobs, $282 billion in travel spending and more than $20 billion in state and local tax receipts.

U.S. Travel Association President & CEO Geoff Freeman wrote: “We urge you to swiftly pass a disaster

supplemental appropriations bill by Thanksgiving to support communities devastated by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. Damage caused by these storms is estimated to total more than $100 billion dollars, with downstream impacts on travel, visitor spending, hotel bookings, tax revenues and employment.”

U.S. Travel asked that the disaster relief legislation include more than $35 billion in funding for the Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Relief (CDBG-DR) program, with 25% set aside in Economic Development Administration (EDA) Economic Adjustment Assistance (EAA) funds to support the travel industry’s recovery in impacted regions.

Past hurricanes demonstrate that it takes an average of 6–12 months before travel spending returns to baseline levels, the letter noted.

North Carolina’s Mountain region, home to 47,000 travel industry workers, stands to surrender $2.1 billion in visitor spending this fall alone. Surveys show that roughly 15% of all travelers are

unlikely to visit the state in the next year because of Hurricane Helene damage.

“Past hurricanes demonstrate that it takes an average of 6–12 months before travel spending returns to baseline levels, the letter noted.”

The letter concludes: “Given the urgency of the need, Congress should endeavor to pass disaster relief legislation before Thanksgiving to help these communities recover and avoid further economic damage.”

Fargo Voters Approve Measure to Build Convention Center

Voters in Fargo, North Dakota, narrowly approved raising the lodging tax by 3 percentage points to fund the construction of a new convention center.

The measure, which appeared on the November 5 election ballot, garnered 52% of the vote. It will increase the tax from 3%

to 6% and be in effect for 25 years.

“As far as local folks go, unless they’re staying in a hotel, they’re not even going to notice this,” said Charley Johnson, President & CEO of the Fargo-Moorhead CVB.

“A timeline for the project is still up in the air.”

aging that to more than $2 million to date, the organization stated.

“Explore Asheville and the authority will continue to support the recovery of small and local businesses and our community in the months and years to come, and we hope that you join us in that effort,” wrote Brenda Durden, Chair of the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority, and Vic Isley, President & CEO, Explore Asheville, in a Travel & Hospitality Community Update email on October 30.

In that message, the two leaders noted that history shows most destinations recover from named storms within a year, but visitor spending recovery in Puerto Rico and New Orleans took two and four years, respectively.

“Given our region’s terrain and the failure of our city’s water system, our comeback is facing distinct challenges,” wrote Durden and Isley.

To help meet those challenges, Explore Asheville has also announced a couple of new initiatives in November: Cooks for Carolina, a dinner series in New Orleans, and Soulshine, a benefit

More than 20 celebrated chefs and restaurateurs from New Orleans united to launch the Cooks for Carolina, a series of dinners across the Big Easy that aim to provide vital financial support to small, independent restaurants throughout Asheville and Buncombe County to reopen and retain their employees. All dinner proceeds will be directed to the Always Asheville Fund.

“We are deeply moved by the outpouring of support from New Orleans and its hospitality community,” said Isley. “The Always Asheville Fund was set up to help our small independent business owners with emergency grants that will aid in sustaining our deeply rooted hospitality community. Cooks for Carolina will help keep Asheville’s restaurants open into the future.”

Meanwhile, Explore Asheville pledged $250,000 as a Diamond Sponsor of the Soulshine concert that will benefit hurricane relief and recovery in North Carolina and Florida. The concert organized by North Carolina native and renowned musician Warren Haynes, replaces the Christmas Jam, a popular annual holiday event canceled this year in Asheville due to

according to local media outlet The Flag. The new facility is expected to house a 50,000 square foot space, with the ability to utilize room dividers; up to 20,000 square feet of breakout rooms; a catering kitchen; and more, the outlet added.

A timeline for the project is still up in the air. Public officials will have to issue an RFP (request for proposals) seeking a public-private partnership prior to the tax being collected, Johnson previously told city commissioners.

“If passed commissioners would establish a committee to do a request for proposal process seeking a public-private partnership for the project. If passed the city would not begin collecting the new hotel-motel tax until and unless a project was identified and approved by the city commission,” Johnson told the commission, local station KVRR reported.

Johnson said a meeting with the mayor will take place within the next few weeks where they will discuss how to proceed.

Portland, Maine, Council Pauses New Hotel Development in City

The city council in Portland, Maine, passed a 180-day moratorium on new hotel developments within the city in a November 4 meeting.

The measure is an attempt to address the city’s affordable housing crisis and applies only to hotels not yet proposed to the city.

The pause, proposed by Councilors Pious Ali and Kate Sykes and approved by a 6-2 vote, will give the city’s Housing and Economic Development Committee time to study the impact of Portland’s Hotel Inclusionary Zoning Ordinance, adopted by the city in January 2019.

“This pause would prioritize the

city’s urgent housing needs by redirecting resources and land use toward residential development while inclusionary zoning (IZ) policies for hotels to better align with current housing costs and growth goals can be revised,” the council’s meeting agenda reads.

A portion of the ordinance requires hotel developers to “provide one unit of low-income long-term rental housing for every 28 rooms in the hotel project or to pay a fee-in-lieu of such units to the Jill C. Duson Housing Trust Fund in the amount of $4,692 for each guest room in the hotel project,” according to the order. Smaller hotels with more than 10 rooms need to include one unit of affordable housing, and hotels with fewer than 10 rooms

are exempt.

Ali and Sykes in the meeting argued that it costs approximately $370,000 to build a low-income apartment in Portland. However, the developer of a 28-room hotel could opt to pay a fee-in-lieu of $131,376 based on the way the ordinance is currently written.

“This discrepancy demonstrates why the current fee does not meet the ordinance’s affordable housing goals and how allowing additional hotel development without adjustments could exacerbate serious public harm during a housing crisis,” said Ali and Sykes in a memorandum regarding the moratorium.

According to the Portland Press Herald, no hotel developer to date has elected to build affordable housing

into their plans, choosing instead to pay the fee.

The pair of councilors argued that the fee-in-lieu process no longer reflects the current market, and that hotel expansion “competes directly” with residential projects attempting to address the city’s affordable housing crisis for “prime land, materials, labor and city planning resources, escalating land prices and limiting the availability of sites for affordable housing.”

During the 180-day moratorium on new hotel development approvals, which will go into effect 30 days after passage, the Housing and Economic Development Committee will reevaluate the fee-in-lieu process and replace it with a system that ensures hotels contribute more fairly.

The legislation received support from the city’s hotel union, the Hotel and Gaming Trades Council, from its introduction.

“The Safe Hotels Act will not only protect hotel guests and workers but ensure high quality hotel operations that will cement New York City’s status as a world-class hospitality destination,” said Rich Maroko, President of the Hotel and Gaming Trades Council.

Other industry associations do not support the measure, citing concerns about its potential for unintended consequences on the city’s hoteliers and minority business owners and saying the measure “creates bifurcation in the licensing certification process that treats hotels with collective bargaining agreement[s] significantly different than those without one.”

On the same day the Safe Hotels Act was signed into law, a coalition of industry stakeholders—including the AHLA and the Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA)—wrote a letter to Adams asking him to veto the piece of legislation.

“This flawed legislation would create a hotel licensing system with arbitrary carve-outs and have minimal impacts on improving health and safety standards in hotels and force many small businesses to close,” the letter read. “Most of the true health and safety provisions included in the bill are already required by state or local law or widely adopted by the industry. Trump’s Re-Election

Gary Shapiro, CEO, Consumer Technology Association (CTA), spelled out policies the organization’s Innovation Agenda during his congratulatory statement.

“On behalf of the Consumer Technology Association, we congratulate President-elect Donald J. Trump on his clear victory in the 2024 presidential election,” Shapiro said. “This is a pivotal moment for our nation, and it is time for us to move past political differences and unite behind a shared belief that a strong U.S. economy will raise all Americans.

“We enjoyed our relationship with the 2016–2020 Trump Administration and worked closely together on key innovation areas including self-driving vehicles, artificial intelligence, telehealth, workforce development, entrepreneurship, and worker rights. We also partnered with the White House to create a website for Americans to access Covid-related resources and information.”

The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA), National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), Motion Picture Association, National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), Renewable Fuels Association, American Trucking Associations, Independent Petroleum Association of America and International Franchise Association were also amongst those offering their best wishes.

Some associations expressed disappointment in the outcome but pledged to try to work with a second Trump ad-

ministration to further their agendas.

National Education Association President Becky Pringle said: “As Martin Luther King Jr. said, ‘The road to freedom is a difficult, hard road. It always makes for temporary setbacks.’

This is not the outcome we campaigned for, nor the future we wanted for our students and families, but it is the road through history we now must travel.”

Pringle added: “As educators, we are united in supporting every student—Native, Asian, Black, Latino, newcomer, white, LGBTQ+ and disabled—who deserve high-quality, safe, and welcoming public schools.”

“Now that this election is over, elected leaders around the country should come together and focus on serving all Americans, ensuring all students can attend an excellent public school, and America’s educators have the support and respect they deserve,” Pringle concluded.

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) said it is “deeply troubled by statements [Trump] has made regarding immigrants, women, people who are LGBTIA2S+, and people of color and we will challenge any of his policies that harm our nation’s most vulnerable populations.”

“Despite our many differences with President-Elect Trump during his previous term, we know that we must work with the new administration to address social justice reforms,” the NASW said. “These include affordable health care, racial and gender equality, as well as helping more Americans achieve economic stability.”

On October 17 and 18, six Mainsail Lodging and Development hotels hosted events to raise funds for Florida and Georgia communities impacted by Hurricanes Helene and Milton.
