By Jordan Bradley
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has extended transitional sheltering assistance (TSA) for victims of Tropical Storm Helene in western North Carolina following complaints of unfair and early removal from hotels.
The agency had issued an extension of its TSA program, which pays for hotel rooms for victims of disasters, to January 25 due to dangerous winter weather in the region. This follows two
previous extensions.
But social media posts from U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis and U.S. Sen. Ted Budd said their offices were receiving reports of victims being ousted from their hotel rooms with nowhere to go the next day and with no communication from FEMA.
“My office is hearing from dozens in WNC who have been kicked out of their hotels tonight, despite FEMA’s announcement yesterday that they were extending Transitional Sheltering Assistance through January 25,” Budd

California Officials Warn Hotels Against Price Gouging Following Wildfires
By Jordan Bradley
California’s attorney general has issued at least 500 letters of warning against price gouging to hotels and landlords in the state since January 16 in the wake of the Los Angeles wildfires that began on January 7.
According to California law, hotels, motels, shortterm rentals, and landlords cannot legally raise rates by more than 10% of the price charged prior to the declaration of a state of emergency by the state’s
governor. Despite that, reports of price gouging by hotels and landlords have been coming in to Attorney General Rob Bonta’s office.
“The price gouging that we’re seeing and hearing about needs to stop now,” Bonta said.
Bonta’s office told USAE via email that it was not able to identify the hotels that had received warning letters “as this is considered an investigative material.” However, a representa-

“Impact 2.0 – Activating the Future” is IMEX Group’s 2025 Talking Point, which forms a focus for the group in the year ahead.
A continuation of the Impact topic launched last year, it was developed to address the current global climate with a focus on taking positive action and using events to make real, lasting change happen, the organization said.
“When we introduced Impact as our 2024 Talking Point, we wanted to spark change—to get the industry thinking more deeply about why we do what we do,” said Carina Bauer, CEO, IMEX Group. “But we quickly realized one year wasn’t enough. The world has only become more disconnected, and the role of face-to-face events has never been more critical.”
Bauer added: “We’re now seeing a global shift. People are craving more social connection and longing for that
potential in the corporate real estate sector.”
While at OSCPA, Wiley quadrupled the organization’s fundraising revenue. He also helped create one of the nation’s largest and most inclusive CPA pipelines to identify the next generation of accounting and finance talent.
“Scott Wiley is a proven leader who will partner with our Board, staff, Chapters, and all members to transform the future of CoreNet Global,” said Michelle Myer, CoreNet Global CEO Selection Committee Chair.
“His commitment to innovation and collaboration will be instrumental in positioning CoreNet Global for the future. We look forward to the exciting advancements and growth
opportunities Scott will bring to our organization.”
Wiley was also executive director of the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity and attended Ohio State and the State University of New York at Oswego.
“Scott Wiley is the ideal candidate to assume the CEO of CoreNet Global and lead us into the future,” said David Chang, CoreNet Global Board Chair.
“Scott’s visionary leadership and experience will position our association to grow in emerging markets, leverage global digital transformation and drive new opportunities for our members. We are confident that under his guidance, CoreNet Global will continue to thrive and expand its impact on the corporate real estate community.”

“From reducing waste to enhancing energy efficiency, this milestone refl ects our dedication to creating exceptional guest experiences while safeguarding the environment. We’re proud to be recognized for our efforts and look forward to continuing to set the standard for sustainable venues in the region.”
The EIC Sustainable Event Standards have been created through a global collaborative process. The standards specify perfor-

To date, more than 300 professionals have participated in the review of the standards. The venue standard is one of several comprehensive standards for environmentally sustainable events.

The company’s annual Talking Point anchors IMEX show content, research and storytelling as well as providing a theme for exhibitors, partners and attendees to explore at each IMEX show and throughout the year.
IMEX will focus on three key and current areas where events have the potential to deliver the most impact:
• The Next Gen: According to Forrester research, 74% of the workforce is projected to comprise Millennials and Generation Z by 2030.
• Social Disconnection and Loneliness: In 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) launched the Commission on Social Connection, calling loneliness “a pressing health threat.” IMEX will be

Community Board Rejects NYC Casino Proposal from Wynn
By Jordan Bradley
A local community board unanimously voted against a proposed $12 billion casino complex from gaming giant Wynn Resorts and its developer partner, Related Companies, in New York City’s Hudson Yards neighborhood.
In a January 6 meeting of the Manhattan Community Board 4 (MCB4), which presides over the neighborhood, 49 board members voted against a zoning change that would allow Wynn and Related’s proposed project to move forward should it be awarded a license. One board member abstained from the vote.
The board’s decision is advisory, but it holds influence in the city’s Uniform Land Use Procedure process. The New York City Council and city planners
in Mayor Eric Adams’ office will have final say about the proposed zoning changes.
The proposed project would include an 80-story tower consisting of a casino and hotel, office buildings, apartment towers, and a 5.6-acre park.
Several community members spoke out against the project at the meeting, including Joshua David, former MCB4 member and 38-year resident of the Chelsea neighborhood, which would be impacted by the project.
“The Related-Wynn proposal is a disgrace,” David said. “It reeks of greed and disregard for the well-being of this community.”
David went on to say that the casino proposal “made a mockery” of the “carefully considered” zoning laws enacted by the board, noting that “housing units are cut, skylines and
river views are walled off” in the proposed project.
“A carefully planned mixed-use neighborhood is washed away for a garish Las Vegas-style monstrosity that has no place on Manhattan’s West Side,” David said. “If we wanted to live in Las Vegas, we would live in Las Vegas.”
“The community board has a long track record of opposing projects that would bring opportunity to the West Side,” Related Companies said in a statement to the New York Post
In 2009, the MCB4 and Related came to an agreement regarding zoning in the neighborhood that would create 5,762 housing units. However, Related and Wynn’s casino complex project proposal submitted last year only included 1,500 housing units.
In an April 2024 letter from the MCB4 regarding the casino project, the
board cited the significant reduction in housing as a motivation to reject the rezoning proposal from the companies.
“MCB4 must note it cannot support the proposed project’s drastic shift from residential to commercial use,” the board wrote in the letter, which was sent to both Related and the New York City Department of City Planning.
In a statement to the Post regarding this stance, a Related spokesperson said the board’s “ideas are not fiscally feasible to implement” and the company is welcoming of feedback to “make this project and neighborhood better.”
The proposed project from Wynn and Related is one of 11 current proposals vying for three casino licenses in the lower portion of the state, which could include New York City. Applications are due this June, and licenses are expected to be awarded by the end of the year.

was accepting FEMA vouchers but declined to share further information.
The nearby Comfort Inn Biltmore West is also accepting FEMA vouchers and currently has “a handful” of guests staying under the TSA program, according to a front desk agent. The agent noted that the TSA extensions and deadlines were as confusing for the property as they were for the guests, with many waiting for information and receiving none.
“They were in the same boat, I think, as we were—just waiting,” the desk agent said. “I think they would try to call FEMA and be on hold forever is what they were telling us.”

California Developer Wants to Bring First U.S. Atlantis Resort to Oahu
By Jordan Bradley
A California developer has purchased oceanfront property on Hawaii’s Oahu island for $216 million in order to develop the first Atlantis Resort in the United States.
The two parcels spanning almost 44 acres were purchased from China Oceanwide Holdings Group by a California-based subsidiary of Kam Sang Company called Newage Ko Olina.
As part of the deal, the company has agreed to develop an Atlantis
Resort on a little more than a 26acre parcel of the land purchased, which is within the 642-acre Ko Olina Resort.
The development of an Atlantis Resort is an original condition of the parcel’s purchase when China Oceanwide Holdings Group first bought it, the Pacific Business News reported on January 14.
Atlantis Resorts currently only operates two properties: the Atlantis, The Palm in Sanya, China; and Atlantis, The Royal in the United Arab Emirates’ Dubai. The brand is known
for its lavish property and luxury experiences.
Development of a new location for luxury resort brand on one of the parcels has been long delayed due to financial issues on the side of China Oceanwide Holdings Group, which initially bought the parcel of land for $424 million in 2016.
According to Jeff Stone, President and CEO of The Resort Group, the master developer of the Ko Olina Resort, the Atlantis Resort development will be situated between Aulani, A Disney Resort and the Beach Villas
at Ko Olina.
The developer expects the forthcoming Atlantis Resort to cost approximately $2 billion over the next five years and for the property to have around 500 hotel rooms and 500 condo units.
Newage, which is also the owner of The Waldorf Astoria in Las Vegas and the Ritz Carlton in Rancho Mirage, is also considering other hotel and resort brands, including St. Regis, Regent, and Mandarin Oriental, for the adjacent 17-acre parcel also purchased in the transaction.
