About the Author My name is Danielle Johnson-Hazlewood. I have a Bachelor’s Degree from Colorado School of Mines in Civil Engineering (Structural Specialty) and a Master’s Degree from the University of Houston’s College of Architecture and Design. As a young Architect/Engineer in training, I would like to utilize my dual education and experience to create efficient and sustainable opportunities that meet our client’s objectives and visions. In the near term, I am pursuing that experience and knowledge growth required not only complete and obtain my professional licenses, but also to grow my professional role.

As I continue to get more and more experience and exposure to both fields, I continue to thrive off of problem-solving innovative ideals in collaboration with functional cost effective solutions. Like most designers, I aspire to make a positive and impactful difference in how we experience the world. I am known for my work ethic, my time management, teamwork and strong discipline. As an engineer and architect, I am inspired by challenge and new exploration. My portfolio illustrates some of my passion for this field of work and character as a designer.

AMLI Broadway Park Seven story mixed-use development located one block from the West Alameda Avenue and Bannock Street light-rail station. Situated on a 2.68-acre lot, and part of 75 acre masterplan. This development is categorized as sustainable, LEED certified, transit-oriented development and affordable housing for the Denver market. AMLI Broadway Park, designed by Davis Partner Architects, will provide: • 375 apartment units • 14,500 sq. ft. of retail, with a • 520-space enclosed parking garage • rooftop terrace • courtyard amentity spaces and pool • fitness center and residential facilities

AMLI Broadway Park is one of many developments designed for Design Denver, the masterplanned 75-acre transformation between Denver light rail stations Broadway and Alameda. Broadway Park is anticipating 10 million square feet in future development of the vast masterplanned area. This initial building only represents a total 120,000 square feet of site area.

This six to seven story development, with FAR approximating 4.0, consists of A-3, A-2, M, B, R-2, S-1 and S-2 use/occupancy types that that co-exist with type IA construction below the third level and un separated type IIIA construction above 3HR fire-rated podium. In addition, the building is detailed as two separate buildings (North

and South) divided by a full width and full height expansion joint. The complex stands 76ft above grade with one level below grade. Currently the project is in its Construction Administration phase, ongoing a rapid construction schedule.

Main building structure combines a coordinated mixture of materials.

Structural materials include isolated footing foundations, several levels of concrete post-tensioned slabs, CMU and concrete core walls, wood framing above the podium, cold form framing below the podium, and many instances of steel additions for canopies, trellises, or just additional structural support where required.

I, personally found this project to be quite rewarding for both personal learning opportunities and collaboration with the design team. In regards to our structural team, we all were challenged to consistently work fast and communicate effectively.

While I was an active participant in much of the overall building components and design, my main project responsibilities included: • All concrete slab designs and detailing (Mild reinforced and Post-tensioned) • Steel canopies throughout building • Miscellaneous wood framing work and details.

River Run Village Keystone CO

One River Run, like many developments in Keystone Colorado, is designed to attract quality and luxury for both local residents and tourists alike. This up and coming development has already received a lot of hype for setting the standard on luxury living. With its site being adjacent to the local River Run gondola and with scenic views of adjacent mountain scape, this building is anticipated to be a one of many attractions to the Keystone resort area.

The building footprint fills its site area with a total of 89,000 square feet. On top of a podium slab, sits three separate buildings each ranging between 13,500-16,200 square feet with large event space(s) and courtyards, connecting these buildings. This five story development consists of A-2, M, R-1, R-2, and S-2 use/occupancy types that that co-exist with type IA construction below the first level podium and un-separated type IIIA construction above 3HR fire-rated podium. In addition, the building is detailed as two separate buildings divided by a full length and full height expansion joint between West and Central Buildings. The complex is limited to 5 stories and 62ft above grade with one level partially below grade. Currently the project is ongoing the permit review process. This project was originally issued for permit on June 25, 2020, but was put on hold in response to the pandemic. It has recently been approved to continue forward.

Each of the main building structures consists of infinity system above the podium, meaning primarily cold-form and steel framings with concrete over metal deck floor spans. However the featured event spaces and high-end restaurant spaces integret glulam wood framing and trusses that are intended to remain exposed for a striking architectural and structural display. All buildings bear on large concrete podium that houses the partial below grade parking level. Foundations consist of isolated footings.

This project is also one of my favorites for its collaboration with the design team. Structurally, working on this Keystone project came with it’s own structural challenges. We not only have to account for a significantly larger amount of snow, but we also were constrained by the property line and soil capacities and had to come up with some a-typical foundation solutions. In addition, working with exposed glulam requires larger sections to meet fireproofing requirements, and therefore required several iterations with the architectural team to achieve the desired aesthetic. With that said, my main project responsibilities included: • All concrete slab designs and detailing (Mild reinforced and Post-tensioned) • Glulam framing design iterations through Design Development

OLIV Boulder Three story mixed use building located blocks from downtown Boulder CO. Designed by Sopher Sparn Architects with sustainability and community in mind. OLIV is composed of: • 147 apartment/townhome units • below grade parking • rooftop terrace and courtyard spaces • retail amenity spaces

OLIV Boulder is a large low rise mixed use building within a 5 minute walk of downtown Boulder, CO . The building footprint covers a total 56,000 square feet on 82,000 square foot site area. This three story development consists of A-3, A-2, M, R-2, and S-2 use/occupancy types that that co-exist with type IA construction below the first level and un separated type VA construction above 3HR fire-rated podium.

In addition, the building is detailed with an area seperation joint in the wood framing Levels 1-3, in order to meet allowable area restrictions. The complex is limited to 38ft above grade with one level below grade.

The project was recently issued for Permit with anticipated construction beginning Fall 2021.

Similar to other mixed use buildings, this building’s structure combines a mixture of materials. Structural materials include mat slab foundation, large mild reinforced concrete podium at grade with partial post-tensioned tansfer slab at the second level, CMU and concrete core walls, wood framing, and many instances of steel additions for canopies, trellises, or just additional structural support where required.

While this project may look straight forward on paper, I can say structurally it had its challenges. Due to the variety of unit types and complex “window boxes” (best shown in renderings), there was a lot of additional

detailing and analysis required to ensure that all conditions had been appropriately accounted for.

I commend the design team again for their constant dedication to coordinating all of the unique conditions. For this project, I was an active participant in much of the overall building components and design, my main project responsibilities included: • Podium concrete slab designs and detailing • Post- tension concrete oversight • Lateral design of wood framing • Miscellaneous wood framing work and details.

30th & Pearl is a 4-part phase development near Boulder CO. While KL&A is the structural engineer on all of the different phases, I was not part of any of those project teams and therefore cannot speak from personal experience to the structural components or hardships of those designs. However, I was the main design engineer, with the guidance from my superiors, on the Terminus. The Terminus is a small featured entry building for the large 70,000 square feet below grade parking garage. It was developed along with Quadrant 2 of the 30th & Pearl project.

I say this is a feature building because of its small scale yet dramatic steel cantilevers. The building footprint is approximately 1,800 square feet, but if you include the roof overhangs it takes up 2,400 square feet of space. The most notable structure consists of a large 2’-0” thick concrete wall with stout 14” deep steel cantilevering 25 feet. Similar to most aeshetically complex featured projects, there was several design iterations and structural coordination needed to achieve the desired result. As the main design engineer on this project, I am responsible for all of the design and detailing with oversight from my superiors: • Steel framing calculations and analysis • Steel detailing and calculations • Coordination with wood framing and storefront infill • Coordination with structural garage design team for concrete slab interface

The underwater turbines are used to take advantage of the tidal energy.Similar to wind evergy turbines but hidden in the water.

A floating community that integrates housing, entertainment, and resource.

With up to 44% of the world’s population living along the coastlines, and the abundance of natural resources, my goal of my Master’s Thesis was to challenge the discipline of architecture to move further than value of land.

Local residents of Aqua Fluens and tourists of nearby communities stroll through fresh markets and restaurants that line the alleys.

During the week, the upper commercial center is calm with casual shoppers and locals just looking for a pleasant stroll.

The beauty of the water really connects the community at the saltwater pool and spa epicenter.

Underwater Ballrooms and event space allows a variety of celebrations to overlap. The fish seem to enjoy the occasion too.

Client: Heights High School and funding by SPARK Organization

With a rapidly expanding community, this project was designed to connect and expand an existing athletic center.

Fairfield’s HomeOwner’s Association Board is currently working to coordinate a neighborhood vote on expanding an outdated community center. I was hired to analyze and present graphics to the committee in effort to assist their vision of a greater facility (Renderings not shown).

With the surrounding neighborhood of traditional houses and an exiting structure of similar style, the goal of this design was to continue the existing language but add subtle modernity. The review went well with the client and the verdict on the project is still to be determined.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION AmazonGo has been the latest advance to the typical supermarket setup. Amazon Go is entirely app based that allows you to grab what you want and go.

Similarly, WeWork pushes the boundaries of a traditional office space. WeWork’s rentable office space (also app based) allows flexible collaboration and encourages networks to share workspace. Both programs are suited to accomodate a wide range of clientel and quickly adapt to changing needs and desires.

With these key factors of site and program in mind, this project is designed to capitalize on opportunity to engage the users.

The concept is achieved through strategic angles, revealings, and circulation for users, occupants, and those passing nearby.

The two buildings are arranged on the site to activate public access between the buildings from both Yale Street and 7th Street, while creating a semi-private gathering space that connects the buildings at the ground level. In order to further develop user opportunity, these buildings are connected by a monumental public stair.

The stair provides multiple points to view the surrounding pedestrians, potential programmable public space and additional outdoor seating.

WEST ELEVATION Yale Street View

The stair not only activates the pedestrians off of Yale Street, but those within the two buildings. At the top lies a two-story lounge viewing the scenic skyline of downtown Houston.

Although the buildings are unique in use and form, they are united in the open layout of the program, and the language of the facades. Large glass curtain walls reveal activity of internal occupants and aluminum panel attachments create a texture of motion along the facade. Overall, everything reflects being involved in motion or sitting back and viewing other’s motion.

SITE CONDITIONS The two buildings form an urban pathway that not only grabs the attention off of Yale Street but activates an entry point from an alley on 7th street and an entry point from the purposed parking on the South side of WeWork.

In Depth Analysis The stair not only adds programmatic space but shapes the program for its surroundings. The building facade creates opportunity for viewing outside but also viewing activity inside.

With strategic angles, attachments and details, the occupants gaze is either drawn, directed, or restricted. The spatial conditions vary to accomodate those in motion and those at a leisurely pace.

TERRACE A partner project activating a site located at the intersection of White Oak Bayou and Buffalo Bayou.

As the surrounding area develops and accumulates resources for a popular urban landscape, our project adds both green gathering space and network for easier pedestrian travel.

Responds to crisis flooding by acting as a flood gauge, raised high above record flood levels. It’s elevation allows people to access upper three levels even in the worst Houston flood to date.
