2021 is an exciting year for the Institute as we celebrate our 50th anniversary. Over the past half century, DkIT has been at the forefront of delivering excellence in higher education across teaching and learning, research and innovation and engagement, graduating fourteen hundred students annually in such areas as Business and Humanities, Engineering, Health and Science and Informatics and Creative Arts.

Adapting to Today’s Changing Work Environment

The COVID-19 health emergency has dramatically changed the way we as a society live, work and interact (at least for the foreseeable future). The pandemic has impacted the way that we as Higher Education Institutes operate, as we adopt remote delivery of our courses.

Over recent months, our academic teams have been working hard to ensure that adjustments were made to facilitate continued delivery of programmes without compromising on quality, learner experience or academic integrity.

As we look ahead to programmes commencing in Autumn 2020 or January 2021, it is likely that there will be some changes to our usual delivery modes.

These changes include: Blended Delivery It is likely that the level of blended delivery will increase across all part-time programmes. This means that teaching and learning will now include a mix of both online and in-classroom teaching.

We are embracing new technologies to ensure you can still receive a high level of face-to-face interaction with your lecturer through virtual means.

Social Distancing We will introduce strict social distancing protocols on campus to ensure the continued health and safety of our students and staff. In-class groups and practical classes will be limited to ensure that we can adhere to health and safety guidelines.

Enhanced Communications This is a fast evolving situation and we continue to respond to the situation as it changes from weekto-week. Springboard+ Courses at DkIT Free and subsidised* part-time and conversion courses.

For the academic year 20/21, Springboard+ will offer free and subsidised places on a variety of courses at DkIT which lead to awards at certificate, degree and postgraduate level.

Courses include a mixture of one year and two year programmes and are open to all eligible applicants regardless of their employment status.

Springboard+ is managed by the Higher Education Authority on behalf of the Department of Education and Skills.

Course Description The Bachelor of Business Studies is a broad Business and Management programme that explores subjects essential to contemporary business such as finance, accounting, marketing, human resource management and information technology. The purpose of the course is to give participants the business skills that are in demand by companies today.

Course Description Lean Six Sigma has become the fastest growing and most successful approach to continuous improvement across all industries regardless of size, position in the supply chain or service provided.

Our Lean Six Sigma courses aim to provide participants with a balance of theoretical learning and practical know-how in Lean and Six Sigma methodologies. Minimum Entry Requirements Mature applicants (i.e. over 23 years of age) with appropriate work experience. Interviews may apply to all mature students without a qualification.

OR Leaving Certificate Grade D3 in five subjects at ordinary level (or equivalent) to include mathematics and a language (English or Irish), or equivalent.

NOTE: Candidates should have at least three years' experience in a suitable working environment. The course is aimed at all personnel working within the design, manufacturing, transactional, sales or support environment. It is suitable for management and team leaders through to shop floor personnel and employees directly involved in the process. As the course involves a project which is work based, management support is required so that the participant can implement the project.

Course Delivery We are offering the course in two centres, here on campus in DkIT AND in the Cavan Innovation and Technology Centre (CITC). “We spent a full week in Germany and I had the opportunity to meet and work alongside German students as part of the intensive simulation course. Throughout the week, we learned important intercultural skills and I improved other soft skills, particularly around communications, public speaking and teamwork.”

Sarah McCartan has worked in training and learning within the Financial Services industry for more than 10 years. Having completed numerous in-house professional development courses, she was keen to get an accredited Higher Education qualification in Learning and Teaching.

“I wanted to formally study learning and teaching so that I could expand my knowledge of learning theory and practices, introducing new techniques and technology into my every day work. The cultural landscape of the Boyne Valley charts the development of Ireland over millennia from earliest times to the present day. Fáilte Ireland has recently underlined the importance of the area with its inclusion as a key region in the Ireland’s Ancient East initiative.

Participants are introduced to the various phases of development of Ireland’s past on the DkIT campus in a seminar setting. Each of these sessions are followed by a themed field trip where participants visit the equivalent sites in the Boyne Valley to experience them first-hand.

Course Description This 7-week course provides learners with a solid introduction in the use of digital cameras. Whether you are a complete beginner or a budding photographer in the making, this course will be useful as it covers fundamentals such as creative and technical aspects of photography through the use of lighting, composition, and depth of field.

Participants will find out how these elements affect the final image.

Participants will also learn how the basic buttons and dials on most cameras function and how to use them, explore composition techniques such as "framing “and the "rule of thirds" and how these can be applied to any camera from an advanced SLR to a simple "point and shoot" camera.

This course will teach participants how to appreciate the fundamentals of digital photography but also how to use these acquired skills to put together photographic stories that go beyond the individual still image.

Thomas Lennon Control Systems Manager at Cargotec Engineering | Certificate in Applied Electrical Engineering Following his appointment to a new role as Control Systems Manager at Cargotec Ireland (formerly known as Moffett Engineering Ltd) Thomas Lennon, from Dundalk, Co Louth decided it was the right time to take on a part-time course to boost his knowledge in the area of Electrical Engineering. He selected the Level 6 Certificate programme in Applied Electrical Engineering offered via part-time studies at DkIT and funded by the Springboard+ scheme.

“I was appointed to lead a new Control System Department within Cargotec and I thought it was a good idea to go and learn a bit more about the electrical design. The Applied Electrical Engineering course really suited me and it was relevant to the area that I am working in at the minute.”

Thomas has a long history with Cargotec, having worked for the company for more than 19 years.

He started out in the Research and Development (R&D) department working on the design of many of the products currently offered by the company. He progressed from design engineer to senior design engineer and then in 2017 when an opportunity to take over the new Control Systems department came around; Thomas rose to the challenge.

“It was a new department that we were starting up here to apply safety mechanisms onto the machines, among other features. It encompassed the old electrical department that was already established along with the new features that we were trying to develop.

The new team was comprised of electricians and software programmers and as a manager, Thomas was keen to better understand more about their area of work and get to grips with their world.

“I knew that by gaining a deeper understanding of electronics and about their respective areas of work that I would be in a better position to offer constructive advice and that ultimately, I would be able to add more value to the team.”

Thomas is passionate about continuous learning and he tried courses in the past but found that those which solely involved independent study did not really work for him.

“I knew that the study at home options didn’t suit me. I liked the idea of joining a class with other professionals and I wanted to have the opportunity to engage and interact with a lecturer.”

Thomas is a self-described ‘practical-learner’ and so the hands-on nature of the course and its delivery also had great appeal for him. Other attractive elements included the location and evening delivery of the course.

The Department of Nursing, Midwifery and Early Years require that students submit written confirmation of support from their Director of Nursing/Midwifery and Medical Mentor through the Site Declaration Form. Each clinical site, which agrees to facilitate the student undertaking this programme, will be required to complete a clinical site audit, in advance of the student being accepted onto the programme.

Students must also complete the continual professional development form prior to being accepted onto the programme. This should clearly state that the student will be engaged in appropriate clinical practice for the duration of the programme.

The Department of Nursing, Midwifery and Early Years also requires that students submit written confirmation of the availability of clinical supervision for the duration of the programme. This clinical supervision is provided by medical consultants/ practitioners. The Programme Director will work closely with medical colleagues in order to ensure the optimum learning experiences for students, in order to ensure that the clinical environment provides the conditions for the development of nurse and midwife prescribing practice.

All information regarding the programme content, delivery, and assessment will be provided to the

Mentor. The Mentor will also be made aware of their requirements and responsibilities of the role.

The clinical element is a must pass element and failure to pass this element of the programme means a student cannot pass the programme and cannot be eligible to register as a nurse or midwife prescriber with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.

This course is the first of its kind to be developed in Ireland and was developed in collaboration with key individuals from a range of stakeholder groups including, Women’s Aid, Dundalk, Drogheda Women’s & Children Refuge Centre, Probation Service, Department of Social Work, Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, Department of Midwifery, Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda. In addition to the stakeholder groups represented on the course development team guidance was also sought from An Garda Síochána Domestic abuse occurs in every culture, country and age group affecting individuals from all socioeconomic, educational and religious backgrounds. Domestic abuse can include physical, sexual and psychological control by one partner over another. This course aims to support learners in the development of an appropriate level of knowledge, skill and understanding to enable them to appropriately recognise and respond to domestic

abuse.

Garreth Tackney from Bailieborough, Co Cavan is an avid life-long learner and after successfuly completing the DkIT Lean Six Sigma parttime programme in the Cavan Innovation and Technology Centre (CITC) in 2019, he enrolled for the DkIT Certificate in Programming the following year.

“I had a real appetite for the improving my computer programming knowledge and I knew if the programming course was delivered in the same fashion as Lean Six Sigma it would be definitely worth my while.”

Garreth is a director of a start-up company EDAC based in Cavan, and has a background in engineering but has increasingly been involved in leading technology projects as he took on management roles in different companies.

Whilst setting up EDAC, he recognised that the computer programming course in DKIT was a perfect fit for what EDAC needed and his own professional development.

“It gave me the skills to understand and relate to our in-house software developers and definitely opened my mind to more creative opportunities and possibilities, especially for our product roadmap.”

Course Description This is a two-semester, 12 months, blended delivery masters in Traditional Music Studies. It provides opportunities for deep learning and research into Irish traditional music through the methodological lenses of ethnomusicology and cultural theories of music. It encompasses music recording and transmission technology to facilitate expertise in performance, research and fieldwork.

There is a capstone dissertation that is completed from May-September which may follow a creative practice or pure research route.

Minimum Entry Requirements Second class honours degree in any music genre or a related discipline.

Entry is open to applicants from any music genre or relevant music background, and is subject to acceptance at interview. Shortlisting of applicants for interview, based on submitted application form, may take place. All eligible applicants will be interviewed before being considered for admission to the programme.

Students engage with the discipline of ethnomusicology undertaking courses in traditional music studies, performance studies, and transmission & technology. The dissertation/research project provides the opportunities for students to develop an in-depth specialised study, which can be academic or performance based. Course Description DkIT’s taught Masters programme in Music Technology is designed for graduates seeking to combine technological competence with musical creativity. The influence and impact of computing and digital technologies on sound and music is everywhere to be seen. This programme is a response to the increasing demand from Artists, Scientists, Educationalists, and the wider music industry, and digital media sector, for courses which bridge the traditionally perceived Arts-Science divide to produce graduates conversant in both new technologies and their creative and educational application.

Comprising taught and research components, the programme is modular and structured over three semesters. The taught component of the programme (Semesters 1 and 2) consists of five mandatory modules in each semester.

Important features of the Masters programme are the balancing of theory and practice, and technological competence and musical creativity. At the core of the programme is hands-on training at computer music workstations where students are exposed to computer-based musical composition, sound synthesis and manipulation, programming and development, and music production.

Course Content → Acoustics and Psychoacoustics → Sound Synthesis and Manipulation → Recording Techniques and Technologies → Electroacoustic Music 1 → Computer Programming for Musicians → Sound Design for Interactive Applications → Multimedia Music Production → Electroacoustic Music 2 → Computer Programming for Audio Applications → Research Practice and Workplacement Following successful completion of the taught component, the student pursues a major research project, the Masters Project, under the supervision of one of the course lecturers. The pathway chosen by the student will strongly influence the focus (Artistic or Scientific/ Technological) of the research component, which in turn will determine the award title of Master of Arts in Music Technology, or Master of Science in Music Technology. Projects are normally in one of the following areas: music software development, composition portfolio, or dissertation.

Minimum Entry Requirements Applicants should have a knowledge of the production of audio and a passion for music technology is also necessary, or hold a Level 7 or 8 qualification in the area. Applicants will be required to submit an approved portfolio of relevant digital audio/ visual work. Graduates of other creative disciplines will be assessed

for entry through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process on a case by case basis. Candidates will be interviewed where deemed appropriate.

For Mature applicants (over the age of 23 at the time of application) relevant industry or related experience may be accepted in lieu of degree. As part of the selection process, all shortlisted applicants will be required to attend a selection interview.

Christopher Boyle Higher Diploma in 3D Computer Animation

Growing up loving video games and animation was the inspiration for pursuing a career in 3D Computer Animation for Dublin-based Christopher Boyle, graduate of the part-time Higher Diploma in 3D Digital Animation at DkIT. “Video games, animation and watching the development of 3D graphics throughout the 90’s and 00’s was my main motivation for going into my prior degree (Software Engineering), and after a few years working in Software Development, my interest to pursue it increased.”

While exploring the further education choices in this area, Christopher discovered that DkIT seemed to be the only place offering a course on 3D Digital Animation, one which he could complete while working full time.

Talking to DkIT about his experience studying here, Christopher was quick to discuss his highlights.

“I would have to say the group work was the highlight for me. In my class we all came from a variety of backgrounds and age groups, which was refreshing because there were so many unique perspectives,” said Christopher.

“Plus it created a nice dynamic where we all helped and pushed each other to do our best.”

And he was quick to compliment his lecturers, who he said played a hugely supportive role.

“Our primary lecturer was Michael Connelly, who was generally involved in all our coursework. I learned a lot about not just animation and the tools from Michael, but also fantastic guidance on what direction I should take with my own skills. I also had the pleasure of being taught by John Loane (Maths & Unreal Engine), Shane D’arcy (Python Programming) and Peter Morris (Project Management & Audio Engineering), who like Michael, always went above and beyond when teaching us.”

Christopher cites the Higher Diploma in 3D Computer Animation at DkIT as playing a huge role in securing his current role as Pipeline Technical Director at Boulder Media in Dublin.

“For me, it helped me get what I consider to be a dream job. It is tough, especially if like me you are working full time. That said, while the lecturers will push you to do your best, they are also very fair and more than willing to work with you.”

Fees and Exams Examinations

Students will be responsible for registering for examinations. Students should familiarise themselves with the relevant examination entry closing dates and fees.

Please note that fees quoted in this prospectus do not include examination fees unless otherwise stated.

Tax Relief / Other Funders Course Fees Please note that all fees must be paid in full on registration. Course fees received will be receipted.

To note Except where stated, course fees cover the cost of DkIT tuition only and refer to the course or academic year as appropriate. Additional registration and examination fees may be payable separately to professional bodies and to HETAC. Certain courses may also require the purchase of relevant textbooks.

If your Employer is Paying your Fees If your employer is paying your fees, then you must submit a letter/email from your employer confirming that your fees will be paid to the Institute by them as well as supplying a Purchase Order number.

The Institute will then invoice your employer for the appropriate amount.

Tax relief at the standard rate of tax (20%) is available for certain tuition fees on courses which lead to third- level awards.

For further information visit revenue.ie to receive a copy of form IT31. This applies only to students who are funding their studies from their own income. Always retain your receipt of payment from DkIT for tax purposes.

In certain circumstances students may receive financial aid in paying their fees from County Enterprise Boards, Leader Partnerships, Department of Social Protection and other organisations.

Refunds Policy and Other Information Applicants should be aware that for a class to commence it is necessary for the Institute to enrol a minimum number of students. If this number is not reached the Institute reserves the right to cancel or discontinue the course.

Students will be notified and a full fee refund will be processed automatically. Refunds are made at the end of a given month so please note there can be a delay of 4–6 weeks before a refund is received from the Institute. If you pay by credit or debit card, refunds will be made within two weeks.

In the case that the Institute runs a part-time course a refund of fees may only be obtained under the following circumstances: → A refund will be given if a student attends for only the first week of a five week course. → A refund will be given if a student attends for only the first two weeks of a six to ten week course. → A refund will be given if a student attends for only the first three weeks of a course lasting more than eleven weeks. → In all these cases a 20% administration charge will apply.

All refund requests must be applied for in writing to the Lifelong Learning Centre. After these time periods no refunds are available under any circumstances.

Cancelled Courses The Lifelong Learning Centre reserves the right to cancel courses in the event of insufficient enrolments. In these cases students will be notified and all fees will be refunded.

Course Schedules The Institute reserves the right to change the schedule of any programme outlined in this

prospectus. The Lifelong Learning Centre or the lecturer may change the day and time of any class (students will receive notification).

Please note that the number of weeks scheduled for each programme is approximate—some programmes may not require the number of weeks stated, while others may necessitate additional weeks.

In addition, certain programmes may require the scheduling of extra classes during the week or on a Saturday in order to complete the programme within the academic year. If for some reason a lecturer cannot attend, classes may be cancelled without notice. However, the Lifelong Learning Centre will endeavour to minimise such disruptions.

DkIT Student Cards Students registering on certified courses over 10 weeks in duration will be issued with a DkIT student card. A card replacement fee of €10 applies.

Getting to DkIT Located in the north-east of Ireland County Louth has a population of 128,000. The town of Dundalk has a population of approximately 38,000 and is located just 85 kilometres from both Dublin and Belfast.

The first-class road network linking Dublin with Belfast passes directly through Dundalk. With the completion of the M1 motorway, travel to Dundalk has never been easier, taking just 45 minutes from Dublin Airport by car. Being a regional transport centre, Dundalk has excellent rail and bus connections.

Travel time from Dublin (Connolly Station) is just 50 minutes.

Buses arrive each day to Dundalk from a variety of locations including Drogheda, Navan, Kells, Castleblayney, Balbriggan, Carrickmacross, Newry, Carlingford and Ardee. here is extensive parking available on campus and is free of T charge after 5pm.
