Suggested Solutions One of Jeddah’s main issues is the garbage disposals and littering; unfortunately garbage bins tend to overflow before they are collected, and therefore some areas are becoming dumping sites. In order to avoid that unpleasant scene, rather than wait for the bins to get collected, simply dial 940 and make a complaint. In regards to the disturbing litter all over Jeddah’s streets, we hope the law will be implemented, and people who litter will finally be fined. In the meantime, neighborhoods can collaborate and assign a different member per month from their district, to be on neighborhood watch duty for littering and vandalism. We can also put our heads together and initiate campaigns on recycling, littering, water usage, and green living. Another displeasing issue we face in Jeddah is the increasing number of beggars on the streets. We are urging people to stop encouraging them by giving them money. If you want to donate money, or give to the less fortunate, there are charities made for that. Street beggars are beginning to show signs of violence such as slamming on cars and opening car doors. These actions jeopardize our children’s safety and could lead to terrible consequences. Unfortunately in Jeddah, it is normal to wake up to unannounced construction workers digging holes right in front of your home or workplace without prior notice! However, rather than just complain to your friends and family, dial 940 and make a complaint. This sort of behavior may affect businesses in terms of parking spaces and convenience, but with a notice letter in
advance, business owners will have time to make their necessary arrangements. We do not mind the construction as much as not being notified in advance. Citizens of Jeddah, this city is our home. If we do not take good care of it, no one will. There are a number of unfortunate issues that require immediate attention in the city, some of which can be taken care of by us, the people, and some only by the municipality and government officials. We wholeheartedly hope our opinions and suggestions regarding improvements in our city are taken into consideration, and we hope to see a better Jeddah in the upcoming future.
Citizens’ Suggest • Public campaigns in the local media announcing the municipality’s future projects, affected areas, and duration. • The use of urban gondolas or Metrocables for cost effective and quick public transportation. • Covering play structures with sun shades at public parks. • Designate a specific time of the day for waste trucks and all other trucks in order to avoid rush hours and tragic accidents. • Install more speed bumps, especially around school areas. • Severe penalty for contractors and maintenance companies. • Reviving and activating the role of neighborhood centers.
