Soak the clams in a large bowl of salt water for two hours, to remove any sand. Drain the clams and set aside in the fridge, or a cool place.

THE RISE OF CREATIVES

As we move towards a more diversifed economy, it becomes more apparent that the creative and cultural industries will play an important role in the success of Vision 2030.

Much so that it is targeted to contribute 3% to the national GDP by the start of the next decade (2030). In the same vein, the Quality of Life program, which aims to improve the livability and lifestyle in the Kingdom by providing more opportunities for social development, well-being, and quality living, emphasizes on the signifcance of creative communities within our cities.

This means volumes to how the sectors will evolve in the coming years, and it does mean

a lot too, for this and the next generations to come. It means more opportunities to pursue various career paths that may take a formal, informal, or mixed route.

It was said that a person would change careers at least four times in a lifetime. Nowadays, you can be four things and more at one time.

— Whether that means you’re a hyphenated creative (architectdesigner, investment banker-DJ, Dentist-jewelry designer), or you skip from one realm to another. In the past, being told to get a job despite having one as an artist, designer, musician, and the like, happened more often than not. And let’s be real, now and then, it still does.

However, the change in mindset and the value of creative work are more palpable now than the stigma it once held.

The plethora of options a wantto-be creative has might just be the very thing that gets them all confused. Where do you start? Where are you going? How do you meet people like you? Worry not, we got you. Going through the landscape is way too big for us to ft in these next few pages. Hence, consider this a general guide, with a special look at product and industrial design, for those who want to be inventors, designers, and makers all at the same time:

Ithra offers special courses apart from a robust annual calendar of programming. Their tracks approach gives creatives the freedom to explore while fnding specifc ways to upskill and specialize.

Over to the west, we have Hayy Jameel Jeddah, a multidisciplinary arts complex that’s a haven for anyone in the creative feld. This community comprises of practitioners who provide programming in flm, music, design, and interdisciplinary disciplines, so there is room for everyone to learn and grow creatively at this hub.

Describing itself as a community space and creative incubator, AlMashtal House is a community champion providing a platform for innovators and enthusiasts to experiment, learn, and explore their creative endeavors. What we love about AlMashtal is the social, communal vibe they have, connecting people and offering forward-thinking programs.

A DIVE INTO DESIGN

A look at a quickly evolving and in-demand feld: Product and Industrial Design

So why take a look at the product and industrial design feld? Well, it’s a feld whose output is all around you. It’s in everything you use, and you encounter it every day. It’s also in its growth phase in Saudi Arabia, making it a great option to consider if you’re a budding designer who loves the intersection of aesthetics, functionality, innovation, and mordern economics.

Product Design as a formal educational pursuit is relatively young. The frst program of its kind was launched in 2014 by Effat University in Jeddah. It has since been adapted into the offerings of other universities, such as Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal University in the Eastern Province and Princess Noura University in Riyadh.

It must be noted that until recently, product design as a local degree was only offered to women. This has changed with Effat University offering the course for the frst time to men this fall 2022. We spoke to design consultant and industrial designer, Dr. Ahmed Kassab, who also happens to be the Assistant Professor for Industrial Design at Effat University, to give us insight into why anyone should consider becoming a product designer:

What is Product Design?

Industrial / Product Design is the professional practice of designing products, devices, objects, and services used by millions worldwide daily. Also, it is the process of identifying a market opportunity, clearly defning the problem, developing a proper solution for that problem, and validating the solution with real users.

How would you explain it to a non-designer?

This major will give you the knowledge and skills to make you creative and innovative with no limits in designing any products you can imagine using all the advanced technologies.

Top 3 reasons why you should try becoming a product designer

You should become a product designer if: …you love inventing and creating products and using new technologies.

…you love being free in working or thinking about any aspect of life because you can design products from any feld "toys, home appliances, medical tools, transportations, booths, sports devices and more of endless felds.”

What's the coolest thing about being a designer for you?

Oh, three main things: Feeling free to design products from any feld of life. That I can shape the future by developing new products with new technologies that will make our life better and easier. Being always aware of the latest technologies and being able to use them within my products.

Is being a product designer a future-proofed job?

100% yes because Saudi Vision 2030 is based on economic growth, creativity, and innovation - and industrial design is based on all three. It has a central role to play in achieving the aims of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 development plan. So the demand is already there and will increase more.

This major has a huge future simply because it’s about innovation. Creating and enhancing products will only lead to successful companies and businesses. This major and Vision 2030 which are parallel to each other.

The career options for product designers are growing more every day, although it may not always be a straightforward path. As Dr. Ahmed shares, “Awareness is still needed in the industry, you might not see the job title, so I tell my students to ask about the process and then explain what their skills can add value to it.” The beauty of being in the creative industry is that more and more the path of success can be winded and shaped to ft the life you want to lead.

Is creative entrepreneurship right for you? Here’s a glimpse at a group of industrial designers who decided to join forces and reap the rewards of various creative collaborations.

As an emerging creative, you may fnd yourself at the crossroads of getting a full-time job or trying to make it on your own as a freelancer. The cofounders of Thaqeb, a womenled industrial design studio in Sharqiyah, decided on a third way— which opened up more doors than they could have ever imagined.

Raghad Sendi, Aseel Alhussaini, Farah Aldossary, Sarah Alghamdi, and Fatemah Alghamdi have equal stakes at Thaqeb, which they started together after graduating from the Industrial Design program at Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal University. It’s a relatively young course, and they were the second batch to graduate from it.

They initially freelanced on their own, pre-pandemic 2019, and it was indeed a challenging period for emerging creative professionals who were new to the market.

Likewise, for a relatively new feld of expertise, the local industry is still working on establishing the market. And this applies to freelancers who need to fgure out how to price their services and products. Seeing what they were up

against, the fve decided to band together and establish Thaqeb, this allowed them to build a stronger business structure and create a market presence.. It also allowed them to present themselves professionally to prospective clients and come up with competitive rates.

Being able to divide the workload and energy exerted for their studio gives the team the liberty not to be tied down to the grind and allows them to be more creative.

They can pursue different passion projects that eventually circle back into their company.

Last year, Farah and Aseel won the Saudi Tourism Competition for Souvenirs with their ABAQ cups, and this, for example, brought more opportunities not just for the duo but for Thaqeb as a whole.

Right now, the studio reports having a lot of projects, which they think wouldn’t be made possible if they were still trying to make it out on their own. The studio specializes all aspects of industrial design, including design, manufacturing, packaging, and branding.

On another note, Raghad Sendi is also the founder of the Industrial Design Society of Saudi Arabia. She started it to give a platform for industrial designers to gain access to information, programs, and opportunities in her feld. Eventually, she hopes to impact the next generation of designers and give them the kind of mentorship she would have wanted as a young creative in the industry.

Nesreen Mohammad Almasawi and the new age of suits in Saudi

Rosa Canina was acknowledged as one of the best looks from the Saudi cup 2022, a world-class horse racing event affliated with the Saudi Fashion Authority. Additionally, Rosa Canina has been a prominent brand affliated with 100 Saudi Brands.

To be revolutionary, one must have a vision of altering the world; for Nesreen, this meant changing how clothing appeared, ft, and felt. She sought a solution by continuing the tradition of creating groundbreaking power suits.

Nesreen Mohammad Almasawi is 33 year old who studied fnance and banking, a completely different feld from fashion and bespoke tailoring. Her personality and creativity have no limits, and she is someone that believes in creating suits that make a fashion statement.

Her elegant and sophisticated brand Rosa Canina is the epitome of her personality, through which she wants her clients to express themselves as well. Her journey to creating the brand is the inspiration behind Rosa Canina.

Nesreen grew up in a big family where her grandfather worked with fabrics, and her mother used to do tailoring for her and her family sometimes, which she got highly infuenced by. As a child of unique taste and petite stature, it was diffcult for her to fnd anything of her choice.

Knowing that she probably wasn’t the only one having diffculty fnding designs made for her size; she decided to tap into the niche market of made to measure design and tailoring.

In 2017, she founded her label Rosa Canina after getting great feedback from her inner circle, who tried her designs. After researching suitable fabrics for jackets and patterns, she crafted her frst jacket. She told us, “it was a disaster and beautiful at the same time because I’m the one who made it.” This was just the beginning for Nesreen, and she eventually found herself specializing in making suits.

We asked Nesreen’s secret behind achieving success for her brand, to which she replied, “You will disappoint yourself and other people, but that’s okay. The process of success is not purely paved with right decisions. It’s a lot of wrong decisions.” Market tactics for each brand are different; Nesreen told us what worked for Rosa Canina was mainly word of mouth. Since it’s a bespoke tailoring brand that targets a niche market, most of her clients come from referrals.

Nesreen is a frm believer that fashion creates a statement. She said, “Fashion is the most indirect yet direct way to put your message out there. It enhances your character and your personality.” That’s why she wants to create suits for people that elaborately express their personalities. Rosa Canina’s persona is very discrete, and their goal is to make their clients look prominent when they wear Rosa Canina’s suits.

We asked Nesreen about what’s in store for Rosa Canina, and she told us that she is planning to make Ready-to-wear attires, keeping the brand’s persona in mind. She said, “We will discretely try to target our audience, what suits the brand’s DNA and persona.”

Kawthar sees herself in the brand, which is how she represents ART BY KAF. In her creations, Kawthar adopts a unique viewpoint; her thought process entails testing the material and pushing herself along the way. Despite her expertise in architecture, she has a distinctive fashion sense that refects her culture and heritage. Kawthar views her art as a fashion statement and expresses her vision through it, despite the diffculties inherent in the month-long process of crafting each item.

Raneem Shaban is a fashion designer by degree, a stylist by inclination, and a brand strategist by profession. Her label R*3 caters to the upcycling and reuse ethos locally and worldwide; to sub-create whimsical clothing with minimal-batch production made by a growing crew of creatives. R*3 seeks to illuminate a sustainable strategy for decreasing “fashion waste” in the industry. SHABAN

Razan Mussallam, the company’s creator and design director, helms the house. Taking pride in being the frst ethical and slow fashion manufacturing frm in Saudi Arabia. Their creations are produced at their headquarters, where they exhibit and support other regional and local women designers. Razan’s motive for launching the label was to fll a void in the market.

She said, “The lack of institutions that guided designers and produce locally was how the vision came to life - it was only through helping other designers and creatives that I tapped into my inclination to design and create.”

Razan’s cognitive component is seeing and inhabiting an alter ego experiencing a particular event at a different place. She said, “I constructed this character’s clothes and second skin for her to adapt to her surroundings.”

Celebrate Saudi National Day with Giordano

Saudi Arabia’s National Day marks a signifcant milestone for Giordano as they launch an annual collection six months in the making.

Founded by Wadha Al Rashid, Draft Creations has paved the way for the Saudi interior design industry as we see it today; creating stylish, and contemporary interiors to their clients’ spaces. We were allowed to have a one-on-one interview with the General Manager of Draft Creations, Amir Massalkhi, as he took us on a journey through the creation of the Draft offce.

The goal was to create a tailored space that will incorporate accents that strengthen the designers’ creativity while working, and translate a powerful message to visitors and clients surrounding them with a special aura of being at the Draft premises.

After many brainstorming sessions, debates, sketches, drawings, and ideas, the team was dedicated to designing a space. The theme of the Draft Creations offce leans towards a refned industrial approach, its decor focuses primarily on their own projects, samples, fnishes, and of course, incorporating the team with items that bring back memories. “With every exciting project comes a series of challenges. Renovating the space to accommodate our business - operations, cultures, and daily routines - and to serve our expanding team.” Amir said.

Welcome to the Realm

Realm Studios, founded by Sultan Yaghmour, has fourished in the design industry. We spoke to Sultan, as he let us in on some exclusive information while designing the cafe, Esso. Sultan was infuenced as a child to create experiences for others, “It comes from the passion of creating experiences like flmmakers when they can create the full pictures before shooting the scenes.”

With Realm Studios, we see glimpses of simplicity, proportionally balanced, and an iconic or cultural touch. Realm Studio's inspirations were drawn from legends in the business, which includes big names like Richard Meier, Norman Foster, and Kareem Rashid.

As Realm progresses within the Saudi realm of design, they have carved out spaces that are our everyday hangout spots like Hoot Coffee House, Esso Cafe, 95 Celcius Cafe, Cup and Couch Cafe, Dough Source Restaurant, and private beaches, including the luxurious Greek-like spot, Oia Beach.

Let’s dissect the Balinese cafe, Esso. As you glance at this space, you comprehend that this project was inspired by the Asian theme, Balinese Style formed by the handmade engraved woods accented on walls, ceilings, and around the cafe portraying it as a focal point for the space.

A contemporary Asian essence solely inspires the concept behind Esso. The color shades consist of earthy colors and natural materials, from exposed concrete and natural wood to marble. “We have created the most complicated material selection, but we made it comfortable for the eye to combine them,” according to Sultan. “Recently, we are focusing on retail and hospitality projects around the country, including The Shed Cafe in Riyadh, Yard Residents Compound and Bambini Kids in Jeddah, Qaf Cafe and Padel Courts in Khobar to name a few.

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS

Residences by Hajar Studio’s

Qasem AlMutair founded Hajar Studios, which was built upon the idea that “great design is not expensive.” Hence, the approach of Hajar Studios is a mixture between maximalist and minimalist within a budget and making sure the items used in giving accents to the spaces are brought from art exhibitions, including Art Biennale.

Inspired by Daniel Libeskind and Hening Larson, Hajar Studios focuses on creating spaces that are all about connection, just like many of their recent spaces. This residential project emphasized having height volume and stacked stairs.

“The tall wall was added with a mixture between wooden cladding marble fnish and brass to complement the handrail in the states in the walkway at the frst foor.”

The leading lights that compliment the house are modern chandeliers hanging in the middle of the space to add a spacious feel to the home. The upper and ground foors are connected by stairs that are also attached to the living room, the dining area to the open kitchen.

The visual appearance is connected through the furniture color selection and ceiling design. Qasem shares, “as I explained, I believe that beauty is not expensive and that what took me too long to achieve in this design is something not costly but elegant.”

MODERN TOUR DE FORCE

The creative passion behind FBS

Established by Sara Batterjee, Focal Building solutions has been an arch to many spaces from offces, community spaces, cafes, restaurants, and more. FBS’s story is about a young girl whose infuence has always been her mother’s passion for interior design, Richard Meier, Karim Rachid, and Zaha Hadid.

“If we are doing a current design project, I like to add eclectic pieces to it and break the rules a bit. This eclectic style became trendy and more appealing lately rather than having a certain style for the whole house or offce.” They usually create their pieces from scratch and develop them in-house.

The offce has been operating since 2007 and was renovated during the Covid-19 pandemic. With the design and authenticity of the FBS offce, they are showcasing their services, quality, and the materials they bring to the table. “We usually think about function frst, and we came up with this design idea from the function.”

As you enter their offce, you catch a glimpse of the communal table, the offce’s hub in the center, giving the team a sense of freedom to casually gather around and discuss a project or item. The table also features a tree in the middle, acting as a symbol of the portrayal of solid roots and working together as a family.

The wooden partitions aimed to create an open meeting room where the employees feel comfortable and easy to access. “Most of us agree that the biggest challenge is the execution; therefore, we created our team to execute in-house.”

They have worked on successful projects for the Ministry of sports, Cruise Saudi “PIF,” Red Sea development company ‘the community center,’ Saudi payments offce in KAFD Riyadh, Ammar cafe, and Tahreek.

“I can tell you that the bohemian was very popular in the past three years, and you can see it in so many cafes, and project designers are applying simple resort-style designs, but this year I believe it started to fade away.”

AESTHETIC AND UNIQUE

Eye catching designs with AHG

The founder Ahmed Al Ghamdi made sure to create an offce that would change lives with the spaces AHG would invent. Inspired by Zaha Hadid, Dr. Emad Hammad, Azaz Architects, Peter Marino, and India Mahdavi, AHG is a space inspired by many legends within the industry, creating an interior design business uniquely structured and functioned. “We are often interested in curved lines because they give simplicity to the design, in addition to being very compatible with modern design, which is our design style.”

To create spaces, AHG focuses on spots including West Elm, Pottery Barn, and The one (Bahrain) to shop for their favorite pieces complimenting each space.

With Jovveo, it was challenging to integrate the coffee shop with the idea of a board game spot where people can enjoy both aspects of fun and coffee. The project required many colors that create the identity in the design process and the lighting lines in the entrance to welcome the customers into the colorful and vibrant world of Jovveo.

Placed on the Mezzanine foors of Jovveo, almost all the design pieces are bespoke and dedicatedly manufactured from scratch specifcally for this special project.

Qairavan is the brainchild of Nada AlNahdi, Omar Idriss, and Ziad Traboulsi. Their go-to advice on exploring Saudi is to get a car. It’s the best and only way to explore Saudi Arabia. “Ideally, a small jeep with 4WD to not limit the driving areas. Many places are off roads and not reachable by any public transport. It is also the cheapest way to explore around Saudi Arabia.”
