WIE IS SIGRID?

als kleuter: gefascineerd door dieren en kon reeds gevat beeldend weergeven met succes, daarvan getuigen de verschillende prijzen bij tekenwedstrijden...

als scholier: spelend in het bos, maakte ze zelf een paard van een omgevallen boom en leerde zichzelf paardrijden

als leerlinge: toonaangevend, modebewust en visionair voor artistieke trends

als studente: model, baanbrekend, artistiek en creatief

als dertiger: commercieel, emotioneel geraakt door puurheid en authenticiteit, stimulerend en vernieuwend - authenticiteit en vrijheid zijn haar hoogste waarden

als veertiger: ook beeldend kunstenaar

In volle overtuiging ooit journaliste te worden, behaalde Sigrid Nauwelaerts (°1969) haar licentie pers & communicatie aan de Vrije Universiteit van Brussel. Alhoewel ze naast die journalistedroom van kindsbeen af een artistieke carrière ambieerde, koos ze steeds voor commerciële functies in de mode en daarna in de magazinewereld. Sinds 2001 vult ze commerciële, journalistieke en mediaopdrachten in via haar eigen creatief bureau, In 2006 startte ze naast haar communicatie-bureau de kunstgalerij HANGAR311 en daarna de djø gallery@home op waar ze, door het organiseren van expo’s, kunstenaars en hun werk in de kijker plaatst. Wat als een hobby begon groeide, na verloop van tijd en door overmatig enthousiasme, uit tot een heus kunstplatform.

Omdat de creatiedrang alleen maar pertinenter de kop opstak, besliste Sigrid in de zomervakantie 2011 voor het eerst een pak klei te kopen - om af te kicken van haar computerverslaving - en om verplicht alleen met de handen te werken. Op vakantie in Frankrijk maakte ze haar eerste keramische sculpturen waar ze zo’n plezier aan beleefde dat ze besliste zich in te schrijven aan de Academie voor Schone Kunsten te Mechelen om de avondleergangen keramiek te volgen.

Dit boek ‘Cuddly Ceramics’ wat zoveel betekent als ‘aaibaar aardewerk’ is haar art & mood book waarin de creaties van de eerste jaren zijn opgenomen.

Paardenliefhebber in de eerste plaats zal je een sublieme collectie Trojaanse paarden terugvinden naast andere keramische sculpturen.

De hoge aaibaarheidsfactor van haar beelden is te danken aan de gekozen onderwerpen, veelal dieren, maar ook door het gebruik van materialen als schapenwol en paardehaar. Maar het blijft niet bij dieren. Sigrid zegt zelf: “Ik ben geen animalier”, waarmee ze bedoelt dat ze niet per se alleen dieren wil boetseren en allerminst natuurgetrouw. Ze maakt ook andere creaturen, ja ook mensen, maar dan wel beestige mensen! Het leuke vindt ze zelf karakteristieke kenmerken uit te vergroten zoals in een cartoon: uitpuilende ogen, dikke lippen, overdreven puberale houdingen… waardoor de creaties een ludieke, humoristische uitstraling krijgen.

WHO IS SIGRID?

Small child : fascinated by animals, she could already brilliantly reproduce them, as witnessed by the many design competitions she won Schoolgirl : playing in the woods, she created a horse using a fallen tree and learned by herself how to ride a horse

Pupil : exerting influence, sensitive to fashion and a visionary in terms of artistic trends

Student : model, rebellious, artistic and creative

In her thirties : commercial, impressed by purity and authenticity, stimulating and innovative - authenticity and liberty are her principal values

In her forties : also sculptress

Absolutely convinced that she would one day become a journalist, Sigrid Nauwelaerts (born 1969) obtained her degree in press and communications at Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Although as a child she wanted to work in the art world as well as dreaming of being a journalist, she has always opted for a commercial role, first in fashion and then in the world of magazines. Since 2001 she has been undertaking work in the commercial, journalist and media domains through her own communications bureau. She launched the art gallery HANGAR311 in 2006, and later on the djø gallery@home where she puts artists in the spotlight by organising exhibitions. As time went on, what started as a hobby grew in size thanks to her overflowing enthusiasm to become a real artistic platform.

With her creative desires becoming ever stronger, during the summer of 2011 Sigrid decided to buy a block of clay –in order to break with her dependence on computers and now work only with her hands. On holiday in France, she created her first ceramic sculptures. She enjoyed this so much that she decided to register with the Academy of Fine Arts in Mechelen and take evening courses in ceramics.

This book ‘Cuddly Ceramics’ is her art & mood book, bringing together her early creations.

Horse lovers will first of all find a sublime collection of Trojan horses, along with other ceramic sculptures.

The ‘cuddle coefficient’ of her works is due to the choice of subjects – mainly animals – and also the materials she uses, like lamb’s wool and horse mane. But there aren’t only animals. Sigrid says so herself: “I am not an zoo-keeper” meaning she doesn’t want to only model animals at any cost and certainly not in a realistic manner. She also creates other creatures, including man and even man-animal! She particularly likes to enlarge typical characteristics like in a cartoon strip: bulging eyes, thick lips, exaggerated adolescent attitudes… which give her creations a playful, humorous power.

Dit Trojaans paard met roodbruine kleur werd genoemd naar Red Rum (1965 -1995) een Iers kampioen steeplechase.

This Trojan horse with reddish brown colour was named after Red Rum (1965 -1995) an Irish steeplechase champion.

Dit paard kreeg de naam Avalanche door zijn met sneeuwvlekken bedekte vacht, van Troje uiteraard omdat het een adelijk Trojaans paard is. • •

CARTOONLIKE ZWAZO & DOLL

Zowel de dieren als mensachtige sculpturen in de collectie ‘Cuddly Ceramics’ hebben iets knuffelachtigs.

De lichaamsverhoudingen zijn ver van realistisch. Karakteristieken zoals een kleurrijke snavel of grappig hoofd worden meestal extra uitvergroot.

Both the animal and humanoid sculptures in the ‘Cuddly Ceramics’ collection have something cuddly about them. The body proportions are far from realistic. Characteristics such as a colourful beak or funny head are usually magnified.

Yes, the sculptures look so cuddly that some people can’t resist using them to give their barbies riding lessons when they come to visit. But no, it is no ‘My Little Pony’ toy!

TROJAN HORSE TOPPER

Dit Trojaans paard werd genoemd naar Hopalong Cassidy’s paard. De Arabische witte hengst met zwarte oren, werd bereden door de westerse cowboy-ster William Boyd toen hij speelde in de Hopalong Cassidyfilms en tv-series uit de jaren ’30. Boyd kocht Topper in 1937 voor de Hoppy-films. Topper is begraven in het Los Angeles Pet Memorial Park in Calabasas, Californië. Het park heet S.O.P.H.I.E. (Save Our Pets’ History in Eternity).

This Trojan horse was named after Hopalong Cassidy’s horse. The Arabian white stallion with black ears was ridden by western cowboy star William Boyd when he starred in the Hopalong Cassidy films and TV series of the 1930s. Boyd bought Topper in 1937 for the Hoppy films. Topper is buried in the Los Angeles Pet Memorial Park in Calabasas, California. The park is called S.O.P.H.I.E. (Save Our Pets’ History in Eternity).

HUMANOID SCULPTURE ROUNDHEAD

Deze sculpturen zijn eenvoudig technische uitprobeersels met kanten lapjes om textuur aan te brengen en verschillende soorten ijzerhaakjes (als oren), om te testen op welke temperatuur ze in de keramiekoven wegbranden. Heerlijk experimenteren. De ‘roundheads’ dienen nu als juweeldragers.

These sculptures are simple technical experiments using lace patches to add texture and different types of iron hooks (as ears), to test at what temperature they burn away in the ceramic oven. It was a great experiment! The ‘roundheads’ now serve as jewelry displays.

Dit paard kreeg de naam Virgil naar het toneelstuk van R.G. Austin, ‘Virgil and the Wooden Horse’ over het verhaal van Troje.

This horse was named Virgil after R.G. Austin’s play, ‘Virgil and the Wooden Horse’ about the story of Troy.

Dit paard werd Frou-Frou genoemd naar het paard uit Leo Tolstoy’s roman ‘Anna Karenina’.

Een schaap met afneembare wollen vacht, gemaakt voor mijn schoonzus, zodat ze niet zou vergeten het schaap te drinken te geven. Het lijkt erop dat ik er nog een kip, gans en binnenkort ook een hond aan toe moet voegen.

A sheep with detachable wool fur made for my sister in law so she would remember to give the sheep to drink. It seems that I have to add a chicken, goose and soon a dog too.

Dit paard werd genoemd naar zijn vachtkleur. Smoky cream paarden hebben een crèmekleurige vacht met een roze huid en blauwe of glazen ogen. Vaak hebben ze een zeer aantrekkelijke koffiekleurige tint.

ISABEAU

Dit paard werd ‘Isabeau’ gedoopt naar analogie van de vuilwitte Isabel-kleur bij het palominoras. Dit is een héél vuil vrouwelijk exemplaar met manen van vlas.

This horse was christened ‘Isabeau’ by analogy with the dirty white Isabel colour in the palominoras. This is a very dirty female specimen with mane of flax.

Een mascotte is een persoon, dier of voorwerp dat als symbool wordt gebruikt en waarvan men gelooft dat het geluk brengt: mijn mascotte is uiteraard een paard.

A mascot is a person, animal or object that is used as a symbol and is believed to bring good luck: my mascot is, of course, a horse.

TROJAN HORSE BOXER

‘Boxer’ wordt beschreven als een hardwerkend, maar naïef en onwetend karrepaard in George Orwell’s roman ‘Animal Farm’ uit 1945. Hij wordt getoond als de toegewijde en loyale arbeider van de boerderij.

‘Boxer’ is described as a hardworking, but naive and ignorant cart horse in George Orwell’s 1945 novel ‘Animal Farm’. He is shown as the farm’s dedicated and loyal labourer.

Dit tafereel met de titel ‘Busje komt zo’, kreeg van medeleerlingen aan de Academie de titel ‘Poesje komt zo’!

De reputatie van DE LIJN kennende, zal het busje ooit wel komen, maar wellicht veel te laat. Het poesje echter... niet!

This scene, entitled ‘Bus will come soon’, was given the title ‘Pussy will come soon’ by fellow students at the Academy! Knowing the reputation of the bus company, the bus will come one day, but probably much too late. The kitten, however... not!

Dit Trojaans paard sierde de cover van het HANGAR311-Magazine editie 2014. Het was immers het Chinese ‘Jaar van het paard’ en dit thema werd ook de titel van de expo waarin jewel designer, Danielle Goffa, juweelontwerpen creëerde geïnspireerd op het paard - geëtaleerd te midden van een horde Trojaanse paarden.

This Trojan horse graced the cover of the HANGAR311-Magazine edition 2014. After all, it was the Chinese ‘Year of the Horse’ and this theme also became the title of the exhibition in which jewel designer, Danielle Goffa, created jewellery designs inspired by the horsedisplayed amidst a horde of Trojan horses.

Dit sculptuur kreeg de titel ‘De Kus’ of ‘La Bise’ en mocht de cover sieren van het BOUMARAMagazine van de Antwerpse hockeyclub.

Een kermispaard met appelblauwzeegroene manen van schapenwol en een vacht met kantprint in blauwe toetsen, ‘Blu’ gedoopt. Naast ‘Blu’ de merrie ‘Valentine’, met echte Lipizzanermanen en zwarte poten tot de knie alsof ze kousen draagt.

FAIRGROUND HORSE VALENTINE

Kermispaard ‘Valentine’ is een elegante lipizzaner merrie met echt paardenhaar. Ze werd in de sneeuw gefotografeerd op 14 februari. Vandaar haar naam ‘Valentine’!

The fairground horse ‘Valentine’ is an elegant Lipizzan mare. She was photographed in the snow on February 14th, hence her name ‘Valentine’ !

TROJAN HORSE BUCEPHALUS

Dit Trojaans paard, werd ‘Bucephalus’ gedoopt, naar het paard van Alexander de Grote. Het paard heeft een groot hoofd. Alexander noemde zijn paard waarschijnlijk Bucephalus naar zijn voor Thessalische paarden gebruikelijke brandmerk van een groot hoofd of rundskop.

This Trojan horse was named ‘Bucephalus’ after the horse of Alexander the Great. The horse has a large head. The name comes from the fact that Thessalian horses are known for their large heads.

TROJAN HORSE

GOLDSMITH MAID

Dit Trojaans paard werd genoemd naar ‘Goldsmith Maid’, een prominente wedstrijdmerrie in de jaren 1870 die de “Koningin van de dravers” werd genoemd. Ze had een carrière die 13 jaar duurde. Haar laatste race werd op 20-jarige leeftijd gewonnen tegen een veel jonger paard genaamd ‘Rarus’. Ze werd ingewijd in de ‘Harness Racing Hall of Fame’ in 1953.

This Trojan horse was named after ‘Goldsmith Maid,’ a prominent race mare in the 1870s who was called the “Queen of Trotters”. She had a career that lasted 13 years. Her last race was won at the age of 20 against a much younger horse called ‘Rarus’. She was inducted into the ‘Harness Racing Hall of Fame’ in 1953.

TROJAN HORSE COMANCHE

Een Trojaans paard hoeft niet per se van hout te zijn. Deze uit keramiek, kreeg de naam ‘Comanche’.

Comanche is misschien minder knuffelbaar dan de kermispaarden in de collectie ‘Cuddly Ceramics’ want hij kreeg geen manen van schapenwol. Maar, zijn draaibaar hoofd maakt dat je zijn blikveld constant kan veranderen.

Binnenkort wordt hij getooid met een klimtouw naar de buikholte... Het is immers een Trojaans paard!

A Trojan horse doesn’t necessarily have to be made of wood. This one made of clay, was given the name ‘Comanche’.

Comanche may not be as cuddly as the fairground horses in the ‘Cuddly Ceramics’ collection because he didn’t get a mane of sheep’s wool. But, his swivel head makes you change his field of vision all the time.

Soon he will be dressed with a climbing rope to the abdomen... After all, it’s a Trojan horse !

Voor fans van planten en mooie rekwisieten om het huis op te smukken, zijn er bij djø een collectie exclusieve knappe koppen te bemachtigen. Initieel bedoeld als originele potten voor de keukenkruiden, kunnen ze ook perfect zonder planteninzet het interieur sieren. De exemplaren zijn met de hand vervaardigd, unieke stukken uit porselein of keramiek en in diverse kleuren. In de collectie o.a.: Rose(marijn), Bie(slook), ook Peter(selie), O’Dille en An(anas)

For fans of plants and beautiful props to embellish the house, we have a family of exclusive brightheads at djø. Initially intended as original cachepots for kitchen herbs and plants they can also decorate the interior perfectly without the use of plants.

The specimens are handmade, unique pieces in porcelain or ceramic and in various colours. Meet among others, Rose (mary). Other brightheads like Vera (Olea Vera), Basil (basilicum) to be seen in the gallery@home.

Deze twee sierden de vitrines van een oud pand in de Mechelse binnenstad in Coronatijd. Wandelaars konden het verhaal van de ‘Cuddly Ceramics’ beluisteren door het scannen van de geafficheerde QR-code bij de sculpturen.

En ja, je zag al meerdere foto’s van de merrie ‘Valentine’ in dit boek. Zo gaat dat met beroemdheden.

These two adorned the display windows of an old building in the centre of Mechelen in Corona time. Walkers could listen to the story of the ‘Cuddly Ceramics’ by scanning the posted QR code at the sculptures.

And yes, you already saw several pictures of the mare ‘Valentine’ in this book. That’s how it goes with celebrities.

Dit Spaans ros kreeg de naam ‘El caballo del cepillo’, vrij vertaald ‘borstelpaard’.

Het paard kreeg geen weelderige haardos, maar wel de afgeleefde haren van de straatborstel.

Wie nog afgeleefde borstels heeft, mag ze gerust binnenbrengen. Ik test immers graag een aantal nieuwe kapsels uit!

A Spanish steed was given the name ‘El caballo del cepillo’, freely translated as ‘brush horse’.

The horse wasn’t given a luxuriant haircut, but the worn out hairs of the street brush. Those who still have worn out brushes may bring them in. After all, I like to test out some new hairstyles !

Een nieuwe (vreemde) vogel in de collectie. Is het een toekan, dodo of...? Iets in die aard, ja. De vogels hebben de verzamelnaam ‘zwazo’ gekregen, ook al roepen ze - afhankelijk van hun pluimage - verschillende kreten. Je kan op afspraak naar de vogels komen luisteren.

A new (strange) bird in the collection. Is it a toucan, dodo or...? Something like that, yes. The birds have been given the collective name ‘zwazo’, even though they call out different cries, depending on their plumage. You can come and listen to the birds by appointment.

Door zijn vurig karakter en rode manen, kreeg dit kermispaard de naam ‘Pelirrojo’ (Red Head). Hij werd getooid met een assorti handgemaakt lederen zadel.

Because of his fiery character and red mane, this fairground horse was named ‘Pelirrojo’ (Red Head). He was adorned with a matching handmade leather saddle.

This ‘Red Head’ will soon be joined by a blue and green sister and brother. Matter of setting up a colourful merry-go-round.

Seabiscuit was a champion thoroughbred racehorse in the United States who became the top money-winning racehorse up to the 1940s. He was voted American Horse of the Year for 1938.
