FutureCitySummitwasfirstanideathatwe,agroupofyoungscholarsandentrepreneursin HongKong,broughttotheOfficeofVicePresidentofTheUniversityofHongKongoneday.What wouldbeoneveryimportantmattertoournextgeneration,andweneedtoworkatanearlyyoung agetoaddressit?SinceFebruary2016,thelittlecornerofficeoftheAlumniDevelopmentOffice (whichusedtobeamusiclibraryintheMainBuilding)inthecampushadbecomeour garagefora teamof11finalyearstudents,agroupofteachersandourVicePresident.

Formonthsofcross-learning,banningideasandfutureimaginingmoments,wedecidedtogo backtothefundamentalneedsofhumanbeings.Wetalkedaboutbusinesssustainability,global partnershipanddesignforgood,butthecoreofachievingthatis“Trust”.Trustisanextremely hard-earnintangiblething.Ittakesagestobuildandnurture,butbreaksinashortmomentof disbelief.TheoriginalthoughtofformingFutureCitySummitisnothingfancybutlayingapossible andpositiveroadtoformandbreed“Trust”.Toformgloballong-termcollaborationandin-depth opendialogue,weneed“Trust”.Beforewetakebilliondollarprojectsof smartcities,weneed “Trust”,andtotakehumancivilisationofequity,justandkindnesstosustainwithournatural environmentforthenextcentury,weneed“Trust”.

Inayearof5,wehaveindeedbuiltcertainnetworks,projectsandcollaboration.Visionhasbeen

Ithadbeena10-monthlongpreparationinayearfullofanxiety,trepidations andreflection.Itstarted withsomeheatedtopicsincitydevelopmentbutmouldedtorespondtotheinsightsand rethinking thatthepandemicleftusineverysingleaspectoffuturecitydevelopment-inpublichealthcare,in accesstowaterandsanitation,inmeaningfulconnectionwitheachother.

Asilverliningfromthepandemicisthechancetobeboldtoexperiment,tostepintotheunknown, navigateandcreatethenewnormal.Fromplanningtomanaginghowthehybridsummitoperates takesnotonlytimeandcoordination,butalittlemoreimagination.Forgetaboutifitworksornot.That isnotsomethingtothinkabout,itissomethingtoactonbecausetheonlywaytoknowtheansweris tojustdoit.OrganisingtheAnnualMeetinsuchayeartellsastoryofagroupofyoungpeopleputting theireveryeffortandheartintotheSummititself,thinkingthrougheverytinydetailand worktomake thehybridSummitashumanisticinthebestpossibleway.
