The Dixon in 2016 It was my pleasure to serve as Chair of the Dixon Gallery and Gardens Board of Trustees in 2015 and 2016. I considered it a privilege to guide an institution so valued by its diverse community and so well supported by its base. As you know, the Dixon had an outstanding 2016. We no sooner reopened the museum after the renovations of 2015 than we were celebrating the fortieth anniversary of the Dixon. At an event attended by hundreds of longtime Dixon members and trustees, by Mayors Strickland and Luttrell, by City Council Chairman Kemp Conrad, and many others, we unveiled the honorary renaming of Park Avenue for our benefactors, Margaret and Hugo Dixon. It was long overdue acknowledgment of two people who shaped the cultural life of Memphis as few others have. In 2016, the Dixon hosted Thomas Cole’s last great series of paintings, The Voyage of Life, on loan from the Munson-WilliamsProctor Arts Institute in Utica, New York. We showcased our own brilliant collection in The Impressionist Revolution, and followed it with Everyday English, an exhibition of our holdings in British porcelain. We presented Henri Guérard and the Phenomenon of the Artist’s Fan in France, one of the most charming and original shows the Dixon has ever organized. And we closed the year with Wild Spaces, Open Seasons: Hunting and Fishing in American Art, by many measures, the most ambitious exhibition in our history. Including the ‘Hunting and Fishing’ catalogue, we published three significant books in 2016. Additionally, the Dixon’s 2016 witnessed another spectacular display of tulips across the entirety of our gardens, another breathtaking Memphis Flower Show, four more free Dixon Family Days, the openings of 20Twelve at the Dixon, our new retail experience, and Park & Cherry, our first ever café, Food Truck Fridays, Spring to Art Camp, Symphony in the Gardens, South Lawn Cinema, even more outreach into the community through Art to Grow and via our adopted schools, Willow Oaks Elementary and Sharpe Elementary, free Dixon Summer Camp for neighborhood children, fifty Munch and Learns, Art on Tap, Art on Fire, the Phoebe Cook Lecture, and dozens of other programs and events throughout the year. When the final visitor was counted in December 2016, we had topped 100,000 for the first time in decades. A Dixon visitor in the galleries during The Impressionist Revolution: FortyYears of French Art at the Dixon

I offer my sincerest thanks to the hard-working Dixon staff and Board of Trustees for making my time as Chair so meaningful. I extend an equal measure of thanks to you, the generous donors and members, who make so many good things possible at the Dixon. I’m very grateful.

The Future of the Dixon The last two years at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens were among the most significant in our history. We tackled major museum renovations in 2015 that required part of our facility and program to close for a period of six months.Yet somehow we saw only a minor drop in our attendance figures for the year. To celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the Dixon in 2016, we put on an extraordinary twelve-month show for the city of Memphis, including the most ambitious visual arts, education, and horticulturebased programming we could imagine, conceive, and deliver. There is no question that the brilliance of the Dixon performance in 2015 and 2016 is due in great measure to the exceptional leadership of our Board Chair, Christine P. Richards. Her steady leadership and her insistence upon excellence have made the Dixon a better organization and a more productive and inspiring institution. We are all deeply grateful. The future of the Dixon is ripe with opportunity. We will continue to create outstanding fine art and plant-based exhibitions, our education, art therapy, and outreach programs will go on serving those in our community, our gardens will remain the sites of spectacular beauty, and our many special events will continue to create opportunities for engagement and unique experiences. I am confident of all that, but I also see the Dixon at an exciting crossroads. In my tenure as Chair, I would like to see the Dixon do more to build on its impressive fine art and horticulture collections, better interpret them, and put them on the website. We are near the completion of a new Strategic Plan that going forward will shape the way we think about education programming, about gardens experiences, accessibility—in all its various meanings— technology, and more. Finally, we are looking hard at our gardens in the context of the Master Plan we developed in 2013 and ratified in 2014. During my first year as Chair, the Dixon will determine the next steps in further improving our facilities and grounds. I am pleased to Chair the Dixon Gallery and Gardens Board of Trustees in 2017 and 2018, and I look forward to all that awaits us. A young artist at work

Introduction At the end of each fiscal year—for us, the last day of December—the Dixon Gallery and Gardens staff begins work on a report of the institution’s activities, finances, and successes in achieving a range of strategic goals over the previous twelve months. We strive for accuracy in our evaluations. But we also hope that the narratives are readable, the layouts and photography are appealing, and the data is presented in interesting ways. To the readers of the Dixon’s Annual Report 2016, either at the time of publication or many years later, we hope this small book offers an encapsulating glimpse of the year. You will see in this report the exhibitions we originated and traveled, the publications we produced, the institutional partners we attracted, the acquisitions we made, our activity in the gardens, the impressive number of learning opportunities we created, and the events and performances we hosted. Collectively, they offer a sense of the goals we set for ourselves in 2016, and how well we performed in relation to them. After reading the Dixon’s Annual Report 2016, I hope you will see that the Dixon is tracking positively in every objective area. We saw more visitors and counted more members than we have had in the last twenty years, and they are producing more revenue than at anytime in our history. We continue to generate greater earned income through our facility rental program. And we were once again more effective fundraisers—for the operating budget and for the Dixon Gallery and Gardens Endowment Fund—than we have ever been. We have again ended a fiscal year with a balanced budget, which is a tribute to the resourcefulness of our staff and trustee fundraisers, our ability to generate earned income, and the generous members and donors who support the Dixon. I hope you find this Annual Report 2016 interesting and useful. Please contact me if you have any questions about its contents. Martha R. MARTHA R. ROBINSON Martha R. Robinson was an exceptionally generous and enthusiastic supporter of the Dixon. A trustee in the 1980s and 1990s, she possessed a great love for art and was an effective advocate of the museum’s nineteenth-century French paintings collection. Mrs. Robinson was frequently called upon to champion and fund new acquisitions, and she seems never to have rebuffed a request to contribute. When the Dixon Gallery and Gardens Endowment Fund was established in 1990, she immediately pledged a major contribution, and steadily added to the Robinson Fund for the rest of her life. It remains one of the largest funds in the Dixon endowment—in spite of having supported the purchase of Pierre-August Renoir’s TheWave (1882), the Gaston La Touche painting, The Joyous Festival (c. 1906), and other significant works in the collection. In September 2016, the curator position at the Dixon was endowed in perpetuity by a gift derived from Mrs. Robinson's estate planning. Julie N. Pierotti is the first Martha R. Robinson Curator at the Dixon. We celebrated this generous benefactor and her extraordinary contributions to the Dixon by hosting Martha R. Robinson Day on September 29, 2016. Admission was free that day in Mrs. Robinson's honor.
