Wooster High School Students Qualify as Semifinalists, Commended Students in 2018 National Merit Scholars Program Seniors Jeremy Lun, Jonathan Michel, Estelle Shaya and Veronica Velasquez are among 16,000 Semifinalists in the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program held by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Nicholas Cosmo, Connor Niro and Amber Swigart were recognized as Commended Students in the program. Approximately 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2018 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scores of more than 1.6 million juniors who entered the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Lun, Michel, Shaya and Velasquez will continue on to compete for one of 7,500 National Merit Scholarships in the spring. Semifinalists must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay and earn SAT® scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test. Commended Students will be presented with a Letter of Commendation from Wooster High School and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. The 2018 National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July 2018. Congratulations to all of these talented students!
