Setting new goals West Holmes graduates encouraged to chart their own path

By CHRISTINE L. PRATT Staff Writer W. HOLMES DISTRICT — Since they first came together as sixthgraders, the members of the Class of 2013 have “pushed one another to exceed expectations,” said Valedictorian Courtney Kozak.

What started as a group of people who were individually competitive morphed into a team in which they combined their strengths to work together and rise to victory, Kozak said during

Saturday’s commencement ceremony at West Holmes High School.

That mentality has yielded a variety of accomplishments, athletically, academically and in many other areas.

As they pass into a new stage in life, “wherever your journey takes you,” she urged her fellow students to give nothing less than their best.

The class is one “composed of many wellrounded, talented individuals,” and commencement marks an “appropriate time to set new goals.”

Community Paying close attention to habits of a Canada goose According to some silly books that I’ve read, the Canada goose excretes nearly 2 pounds of feces every day. A fairly reliable source states it poops every 12 minutes.

This may all sound very mathematical, because I know you are sitting there calculating how many times per day and how much per release, but really, that’s not what my story is all about.

The street where I live is an odd combination of wild and suburbia.

We’ve had our fair share of misplaced critters, and though they seem to be diminishing with development, geese have started setting up camp

and becoming our official neighbors.

The Canada goose, as it is called, is a rather pesky bird. It is interesting to research that after the Civil War, the honking bird was all but gone from the state of Ohio and in 1956, a mere 10 nesting pairs were introduced by the Division of Wildlife. In just a few decades, they multiplied and multiplied and realized that golf courses and subdivisions were the

ultimate slap in the face to anyone who has ever thought, “mmm ... goose jerky.”

And now they live on my street, these birds.

But normally, they fly. They are, indeed, birds. When it comes to comparing the list of flightless birds to flying birds, flightless birds are few and far between. The Canada goose normally flies and honks and poops, even in mid-air because 12 minutes happens quite often. The goose on my street, however, does not.

I first realized it when my dog was going bonkers and a quick glance out my front window

had me looking at a goose walking down the sidewalk in my front yard. It walked all the way across, and then up and over a hill where it disappeared in the field.

And life went on.

But the very next day, I heard my dog barking and looked out to find the goose walking directly down the middle of the street. He or she (both genders look pretty much identical) was taking a stroll from the field all the way down to the retention ponds at the other end of the street.

And so it continued, this goose walking up and down our street

from somewhere in the field to somewhere near the pond. Curiosity was getting the best of me, and one day I could take it no more. I went goose stalking. I followed the goose, leaving plenty of space because I’m pretty sure it would peck off my face if I didn’t. I followed it through my yard, over the hill and into the field where I stood for around five minutes, watching it nibble on spring plants and waiting until it did anything spectacular or something.

But it never really did.

It was just being a Canada goose.

If you’ve never had the pleasure of watching a single animal in the

wild, do so. I waited for something special, and truthfully, I got it. I got to watch this big bird take a long journey to find something that it wanted, even if it couldn’t fly. (I still am not sure about that part of this story.)

Watching nature remains something satisfying for one’s soul, a sneak peek that brings us closer to the rest of the world.

So I encourage you all to give five minutes to the goose. Or a groundhog, or a squirrel. Anything really. Just make sure that if it’s a goose, you only give them five minutes. If you give them any more, say 12, well, you might have a different story to tell.

In struggling to pen a speech that would be not only insightful but traditional, Salutatorian Rebecca Rohr fought falling “into the trap to reach a standard set by someone else.”

She said she and her classmates have, consciously or not, been following in footsteps of others their entire school careers. “We’ve been told to do our best, but there also are standards set by someone else in defining success.”

According to those calculations, she said, she is one of the “most successful” of her peers, “but is it a true measure of success?” she asked.

“Don’t let a math equation determine your success,” she said, instead urging her classmates, in moving forward, to look beyond their struggles and focus on their talents to discover their own true potential. “Set your own standard in life.”

“Although the world may not accept your standard, don’t compare yourself to someone with different opportunities

and skills, true success comes in the form of personal growth, and hard work and persistence will always help you.

“Be the person you are.

You determine the value of success, not the world,” she said. “If you always strive for someone else’s standard, you might miss out on the most important things.”

A total of 181 seniors graduated as members of the Class of 2013.

Together they were awarded scholarships and grants totaling $3,648,000, according to Superintendent Kris Perone.

Of those graduates, 45 percent intend to attend a four-year college, 11 percent plan to attend a twoyear college, 41 percent will directly enter the workforce and 3 percent will enlist in the military.

“To the Class of 2013, you should be so proud of what you’ve accomplished,” said Perone, quoting actress Judy Garland in saying, “Always be a first rate versio n of yourself instead of a second rate version of someone else.”

As always, the Fling takes place the second weekend in June, rain or shine.

Through the years, the Fling has become the largest ’50s festival in Ohio, attracting thousands of those who enjoy classic cars, great music, live entertainment and good food at reasonable prices.

Balloon duty under cover of darkness goes awry in daylight

the laundry done, the pets alive and the weeds knocked down below the legal limit as well. You’ve got the picture, there’s a lot going on around here. It’s not necessarily more than other folks have to deal with, but our home life is most certainly conducted in a more discombobulated fashion.

Now back to aligning things with the new job.

When we signed-on one immediate scheduling conflict jumped right out at us.

The Cleveland Marathon for which Kristin had been training for months just so happened to fall on the very same date as the Spring Open House for the retirement community. Not a problem. We assured our new boss that we’d be all set for the event before we left town on the big morning.

Kristin would take care of her “little” four-hour run and we’d be back to town just as the event got rolling in the afternoon.

After carefully calculating travel time, Kristin’s running time, the long and ugly

walk back to the car once the race was over, and time for travel back to town, it all seemed perfectly doable.

Since everything would be set the night before, things would work out perfectly.

Just before bedtime we went through our final checklist of things that needed to be ready for the open house.

Brochures? Check. Signs?

Check. Balloons?

“Wait. BALLOONS?” I said.

“Yes, we told the boss that we would have balloons leading people down the street to the units that we’re actually showing tomorrow,” Kristin said.

“Scratch balloons,” I said.

“We’re never going to find any at this hour.”

“Oh, I’ve already got them,” she said. “All you need to do is blow them up and tie them out.”

“TONIGHT?” I cried.

“Well, yes ... unless you want to do it at 4 in the morning as we leave town.”

She tossed me two bags of color-coordinated balloons and a ball of ribbon then walked off toward her own sweet dreams. I stomped off to the basement to fire up the compressor. If I was going to pull balloon duty at 11 at night I wasn’t going to make myself pass out in the process.

After a few minutes, Kris-

tin actually popped down to see what all the ruckus was about. I waved her off with a nod that said “I’ve got this” and she turned to leave. Unfortunately, just as she turned her back the balloon I was filling exploded, causing Kristin to leap as high as I’ve ever actually seen a girl fly. Upon landing she burst into tears. At some instant she actually wet herself but I’m not sure whether it was upon hearing the “pop” or if it was just a consequence of a hard landing. Either way, witnessing the spectacle made every

second of my own late-night toil entirely worth it!

(By the way, I abandoned the whole balloon operation only moments after arriving near the retirement

Kristin and I recently landed another part-time job collaborating on marketing and public relations work for a retirement community in our neighborhood. We’d done some volunteer work for them in the past and frankly, fell in love with the place and its people through those interactions. When the opportunity arose to help out even more we jumped in. It’s been great so far and seemingly a great fit. The only wrinkle in this first month or so has been trying to align our own previously existing “activities calendar” with the calendar of events of our new client.

I mockingly call our own schedule an activities’ calendar because there is no actual calendar. Our life outside work is generally dictated by a never-ending flurry of controlled chaos. First there’s the kids’ stuff — middle school concerts and programs for Sylvia, college and ROTC ceremonies for Charlotte, and the never-ending struggle to keep Ben’s ratty old truck running so he can make it to the skate park on time. Ohio Mennonite Relief Sale is at Buckeye Event Center Slated this year for Aug. 2 and 3, the 48th annual Ohio Mennonite Relief Sale moves to an indoor facility, the Buckeye Event Center in Dalton.

The new location for the two-day event allows attendees to enjoy the many activities that are offered, regardless of hot weather or rain.

The 2013 Ohio Mennonite Relief Sale includes live music, breakfast, food and vendor booths and children’s activities, as well as cornhole and volleyball tournaments.

Multiple auctions will be held, including a silent auction, art and collectible auction, wood and tool auction, and a quilt auction. A 5K run is also part of the annual fundraiser.

The relief sale begins on Friday afternoon, with

food and vendor booths opening at 4 p.m. The evening program begins at 6:30 p.m. Performers include the Loren Glick Family and Holmes County Bluegrass. Friday’s guests will be able to preview Saturday’s auction items, as well as participate in a silent auction of theme baskets and other donated handmade items.

On Saturday morning, breakfast starts at 7 a.m.

Breakfast includes pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, sausage gravy and biscuits and more. The Run for Relief 5K will be held at 8 a.m. At 9 a.m., the art and collectible and wood and tool auctions begin, followed by the quilt auction at 10 a.m.

Gerber’s chicken barbecue, Laotian egg rolls, homemade ice cream, and much more will be available for lunch. The fifth annual cornhole tournament and fourth annual volleyball tournament will be part of Saturday’s activities as well.

Auction items can be previewed online about one month prior to the sale at www.OhioMCCReliefSale.org. Brochures, registration information, forms for the Run for Relief 5K, cornhole and volleyball tournaments are also available online. Information regarding entry fees for specific events can be found on the site.

Admission and parking are free. Handicap parking and wheelchairs are available. Proceeds from the sale go to Mennonite Central Committee.

Since acquiring Bunker Hill Hardware in March of 20l2, we have had an interesting year.

We have, come to appreciate the support of our neighbors a lot. We had little experience in the hardware retail business, but with your support and input we have had a very satisfying year. We have learned to try and listen to our customers and your needs. One of the greatest hurdles has been trying to find our niche and make sure that we have the products on the shelf that you, our friends and customers, have been looking for. We are very happy to see a higher request fulfillment rate than we initially had. As we stated when we started, if it is a normal stock item and we do not have it we will get it to your door free of charge to you. Ordering items in when asked for them and then delivering it has given us the opportunity to recognize the needs that we are lacking and slowly build upon the needs as they were presented.

We have, in the last year, added hundreds of new items to our inventory. We are planning on having an open house May 31 & June 1, hours are Friday 5.31.13 7am-5pm & 6.1.13 8am-12noon.

On Friday we will have grilled hot dogs and ice cream from 11am-1:30pm. The rest of the open house we will be serving refreshments as well. This will give you the chance to stop in and see what we have added and also an opportunity for us to meet you.

As many of you know, one of the major items that we have added is our solar and electrical line. We are a full service alternative energy center. If you need a system installed we can help you with our full-time installation crew (ENVIROSOL). We specialize insolar and battery powered water pumping systems. Last year alone we have sold over 70 pumps that have been set up using alternative energy. We can design a system to boost low water pressure up to 50 psi or if your well is 500 feet deep we can deliver water to your faucets with no problems. With 16 years of well pump service and system design experience you can be assured that your system will deliver as promised. Why take a chance with a system that “Should Work”?

We can help you with a solar, battery, and inverter system as small as a phone booth system to as large as a 17.6Kw shop sized system. We have installed and serviced all sizes. If you want to install your own system but feel like you almost don’t know enough to do it, we can prewire panels ready to go and talk you through with installing it yourself.

We have added a complete residential electrical supply department to our store. We offer everything from main service panel, wiring,and boxes

to the tools needed to get the job done. If you need something special we can order it in for you. We have delivery 3-4 days a week so that should not be a problem to meet your deadlines.

For all you farmers out there, we had already stocked Milkbar calf feeders. If you want to know how to raise healthier calves, ask us about the benefits of the Milk-bar, (not to mention the time savings). We (Bunker Hill Hardware) have also been one of the first Gallagher Fence dealers in the area. We have in the last month now added a complete line of Zareba brand fencing supplies, everything from poly-wire, step-in posts, insulators, and electric, battery, and solar fencers. You will find that most Zareba fencers are American made at an affordable price. We are currently in process of becoming registered as an authorized Zareba repair center. However, please note, we will not be discontinuing Gallagher products. Our goal is to offer more options for you to choose from and still maintain a quality selection.

For our kitchen-wares department, our favorite item is the Bosch mixer. But have you tried the NutriMill grain mill yet.

If you want to feed your family the best baked goods, especially bread, try grinding your own wheat berries with the NutriMill and mixing your bread with the Bosch Universal mixer. The flavor can’t be beat! However as we all know, mechanical equipment will need service and repairs if used on a regular basis. That is why in the past year since acquiring Bunker Hill Hardware, we have become an Authorized Bosch Repair Center.

That means that for you, if your mixer needs repair we can do it in house and you will not have to pay shipping to send it out of state to fix. It also means that if we have the parts in stock, as we try to do, we can usually fix it same day. We are constantly on the lookout for older units that axe no longer working or that are being upgraded to a newer model. We will evaluate your old unit and normally we can give you cash back for it.

We need some of these parts to repair units that have discontinued parts because some people still want to repair an older model if parts are available. We also have full line canning supplies in stock. We stock Presto and All American canners. We also stock Vollrath and Krona canners. Most of our customers are familiar with Vollrath stockpots and prefer that one. However, we would like to draw attention to the fact that Krona is very attractively priced and has a triple-ply bottom. Those of us that do any amount of canning such as jams and jellies know how easy it is to burn a batch with a single-ply bottom. The tri-ply distributes the heat more evenly making it harder to burn.

We have also added a specialty line of Nordic-ware baking pans for those of you who like to have a new and interesting way to

present your party or coffee break cakes. And for those of us that like a good deal we have just added a brand new section called “DOLLAR CENTRAL”. In this section we have some really neat and handy kitchen gadgets that are priced at a bargain price. Dollar Central offers cleaning supplies at bargain prices. We have a local company making custom laundry parts with baskets that just came in the middle of May. These are not your run of the mill laundry carts. They have got Heavy-duty pneumatic tires and a 2 legged stand for great stability. The most impressive feature is they can be shipped in a box. They are great for wedding gifts. The box is compact enough to fit into your buggy.

The lawn and garden section now has a few interesting additions. We have added a selection of garden tools made

by Ames True Temper made especially for the ladies. We also have a complete set available that are sized just for kids. Now don’t go off thinking that these are just toys. They are not!

These are built for real work.

Ideal way to introduce your children or grandchildren to the marvels of God’s Creation in the garden. Not only that, there is no better way to teach them the satisfaction of a job well done.

We are now stocking our own LED light bulbs, We have partnered with a factory to manufacture LED bulbs for us.

What started as purchasing some of their stock bulbs has turned into them manufacturing custom bulbs that are designed specifically for our communities needs. We now stock electric bulbs ranging from 5-12 watt. We also stock 2 styles of 12-24 volt dc bulbs in 8-20 watt com bulbs and 5-12 watt Edison styled frosted bulbs. We also have T-8 4’ fluorescent replacements and panel lights in AC electric. Every new order from the factory is bringing us new products made to our specs. Please ask us if you have a special need in LED bulbs. The best part about our selection is the price. Hiland grads eager for future

By KELLEY MOHR Staff Writer E. HOLMES DISTRICT — “We came, we saw, we conquered.”

This is the legacy of the 72 graduates of the Hiland High School Class of 2013, according to valedictorian Caleb Halfhill.

“As we leave today as graduates of Hiland High School, we are all going off in different directions,” said Halfhill. “Members of our class are enrolling in college, doing mission work, entering the work force and joining the military.”

Superintendent Joe Edinger congratulated the students on the paths they have chosen.

“East Holmes has 162 students who finished up their education this year; 90 of those are Amish students who finished up over the last couple of days and had their ceremonies; today, we are honoring 72 students graduating from Hiland High School,” said Edinger.

Of those 72 graduates, 44 will continue to higher education; 19 will enter the work force and six will go on to the mission field.

‘Proud’ to be hawks

The mood turns somber as classmates took time to remember a deceased classmate, Tyson Miller. “In school and at graduation ceremonies, we are often told to shoot for our dreams and our goals,” said graduate Sheldon Mullet. “While this is important and a great motto to live by, I feel that we would do well to take a page out of Tyson’s book and do something that is greater than ourselves.”

On this day of celebration, the Class of 2013 also took time to remember classmate Tyson Miller, who died last June in

an automobile accident.

“Today is a day for memories, achievements and celebration. For our class, today is also a day of sorrow knowing that we cannot graduate as a whole. As we sit here today, not all of our class is with us,” said graduate Sheldon Mullet.

Mullet described how Miller was a friend to everyone at Hiland.

Waynedale grads at the beginning of a journey

By ABBY ARMBRUSTER Staff Writer SOUTHEAST DISTRICT — Fond memories of teachers and annual traditions were shared during the 58th commencement at Waynedale High School, honoring the 87 Golden Bears who graduated Saturday night.

“I would like to remind each and every member of the class of 2013 that this is the beginning of a journey, not the end,” Superintendent Jon Ritchie said. “It is important that you combine your natural gifts with the skills and knowledge obtained during your time at Southeast, and put them to your best possible use.”

Valedictorian Bethany McConnell said some things she learned at Waynedale will indeed be put to good use, specifically paying her respects to teacher Ronald Dobson, who retired this year after 48 years in the district.

“A wise man once taught

me, along with multiple generations of Waynedale’s English students, that knowledge is power.

Thank you, Mr. (Ronald) Dobson,” McConnell said. “I thought it prudent to let you know, before you retire, that at least one thing we learned stuck in my mind.”

Class president Tony Buss also commented on Dobson’s teaching techniques.

“Who could forget being told countless times that someone’s dogs were smarter than you?” Buss asked, joking about Dobson’s two dogs Paco and Fabio.

All kidding aside, McConnell said that entering high school can be equated to a family reunion, but end with lasting memories.

For Buss, one thing that stuck with him throughout his days at Southeast was the outdoor education camp that each sixthgrade class participates in at Camp Wanake.

“I remember being at

sixth-grade camp, sitting with my cabin on our sensitivity stroll ... with our wise counselors attempting to give us pieces of advice to help us on our next six years of our lives.

To us, they had all the answers,” Buss said. “Fast forward to last week, when (student Brenden Stanley) and I were sitting with our campers on their sensitivity stroll, wondering, ‘where did all the time go?’ Suddenly, we were those wise counselors who had all the answers about life. We told them, ‘don’t waste the next six years ­— they go by fast.’”

Salutatorian Lorene Miller told her fellow classmates that this is the perfect time to turn their dreams into reality, even if some students had given up on their dreams.

“Dreams vanish when we wake up,” Miller said.

“If we want to achieve our dreams,we have to know that dreaming is not enough, hoping is not enough and even praying

we would do well to take a page out of Tyson’s book and do something that is greater than ourselves.”

In one of Miller’s last conversations with his youth pastor, explained graduate Jaden Beachy, Miller

said that he just wanted to make a difference.

“Tyson never could have foreseen how much of a difference he would make,”said Beachy. “We all remember the individual differences that Tyson made in our lives and we will never forget the memories we shared with him. Rock on, Tyson.”

Going forward, Halfhill urged the graduates to be worthy of their legacy.

The Swartzentrubers are hopeful that Red Tomato Market will appeal to local families as well as the area’s burgeoning tourist traffic. There definitely is no shortage of traffic in Mount Eaton. “We did a lot of homework with the Ohio Department of Transportation,” Steve said, and discovered that there are 11 roads that lead into Mount Eaton, including two state routes and one U.S. highway.

“There is an unbelievable amount of traffic through here every day, and we hope that folks who are visiting the area

to enjoy Amish Country will visit us, too.”

The decision to pursue such a large venture was not one that the Swartzentrubers took lightly.

“The entire family had input into this decision,” Steve said, adding that at one point the site that now will be home to the Red Tomato Market “came pretty close to being sold.”

Steve said the family is “very excited to be a part of Mount Eaton’s growth,” noting that Red Tomato Market will join the newly renovated “Uncle E’s” restaurant, and Evergreen RV Park as destinations that serve local residents as well as tourists.

With groundbreaking out of the way, and construction scheduled to follow immediately, the Swartzentrubers are projecting the Red Tomato Market will open some time in October.

Paul, his wife, Naomi, and their four children have owned and operated Green Acres Furniture just outside Mount Eaton for more than 20 years. But now, the family is launching a brand-new business venture.

Remembering the fallen

Holmes County holds Law Enforcement Memorial ceremony County to only have one officer killed in the line of duty.”

That man is Sheriff Jacob Bell, who was killed in the line of duty Dec. 9, 1909 after being shot in Big Prairie by a man who escaped from the Massillon State Hospital, where he had been taken on a charge of lunacy. After Bell’s death, the shooter remained at large for three days until he was shot and killed by a member of a search posse assembled to bring him in dead or alive, according to the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office website.

Special recognition was given to the fallen officers of 2012, presented by Millersburg Police Auxiliary Capt. Brad Conn.

“In 2012 our country lost 120 officers in the line of duty — 108 were men, 12 were women.

The average age was 40; the average tour was 12 years,” said Conn.

Geographically, Texas lost the most officers with 11, followed by the U.S. government with nine and Georgia with seven.

In 2012, the leading cause of line of duty deaths was gunfire, with 47, followed by automobile accidents at 21 and vehicular assault at 11.

“Of the 120 officers killed or who died in the line of duty in 2012, two officers were from Ohio,” said Conn. “There were also 18 K-9 line of duty deaths in 2012 — two of them were from Ohio.”

These were police officer Jason Gresko, 32, of the Willoughby Police Department, who died Sept 21 in an automobile crash, and police officer Frank Mancini, 72, the Akron Police Department, who died Jan. 23, 2012, after succumbing to gunfire wounds received 46 years earlier.

Also honored were

K-9 Zak of the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office, who died Aug. 1 of heat exhaustion and K-9 Andy of the Vermillion Police Department, who died June 26 when he fell out of a window during a training exercise.

In memory of the K-9 units and to recognize Holmes County, K-9 King of the Holmes County Sheriff’s Department attended the ceremony with his handler, deputy Tim Stryker.

The May 19 ceremony, sponsored by the Millersburg Police Auxiliary and the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office, acknowledged the Ohio peace officers whose end of watch came in 2012 and all those who have given their lives in the line of duty.

The ceremony marks the 20th year for the annual Law Enforcement Memorial, said Millersburg Police Chief Tom Vaughn.

Obituaries Alma Lepley, 87 Our mother, Alma Elizabeth Lepley, 87, of Millersburg, went to be with Jesus on Friday, May 24, 2013.

She was married in June 1949.

She was a faithful wife and mother.

She had the gift of helpfulness and exercised that gift all her life.

She was a hard worker and when her husband, Raymond, passed away in 1967 she raised her daughter and two sons.

She was a member of Faith Bible Church in Millersburg.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Elenore Cunningham Jones; a brother, Ralph Jones; and two sisters, Ruth Croskey and Thelma Carter.

She is survived by her four children, Ralph J. Lepley (Lynne), Effie McCormick ( Wi l liam), Raymond Lepley

(Yvonne), and Robert Lepley (Debbie). She is also survived by nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Her children, their spouses and her niece, Pat Fry, took care of her during her long illness.

Mom’s favorite Bible verse was: John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.”

She loved gospel music, especially the Gaither Band. She taught Sunday School, VBS and played the guitar and sang in church. She laid the foundation for her children to know and serve the Lord.

Graveside services for the family were at Wolf Creek Cemetery on Wednesday, May 29.

Her son, the Rev. Ralph Lepley and Pastor Steve Young of Faith Bible Church, Millersburg, officiated at the service.

Doris Scheibe, 89 Doris P. Scheibe, 89, of Wooster, died Thursday, May 23, 2013, at Horn Nursing Center.

Doris was born May 17, 1924, in Shreve to Milton R. and Lola M. (McKee) Gilbert, and marr i e d George Scheibe on Aug. 3, 1945. He died Dec. 7, 1980.

She was a homemaker and a member of Jeromesville Christian Church.

She liked working crossword puzzles, gardening, spending time with her grandchildren and cats.

Kenneth Moore Jr., 77 Kenneth William Moore, Jr., 77, of Dresden, died Friday evening, May 24, 2013, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Born April 4, 1936, in Coshocton County, he was the son of the late Kenneth and Mary (Siegel) Moore and was a 1953 graduate of Killbuck High School.

Kenneth moved to Dresden in 1955 and, along with his brother, Gene, established Moore’s Farm Supply in Trinway. He has been a well-known implement dealer in the area for more than 50 years. Although he slowed down some, he never really retired. Throughout the years his sons, Jeff, Joel and Kenny, and his daughter, Kendra, all were involved in the business with him. He had a great love for antique farm equipment, and that led to his collecting and restoring of many pieces of equipment.

Kenny’s love of old farm equipment and his desire to educate the younger generation in the old ways of farming, and rural life in general, led to his establishment of “Education of Yesterday.”

An annual fall event, it is held at his Grist Mill location at state Routes 16 and 60. This event is a collection of antique equipment and area farmers doing actual farm work as it was done in the past.

Surviving is his loving wife of 56 years, Jerilee E. (Denman) Moore, whom he married March 12, 1957; six children, Jeff (Sherri) Moore of Dresden, Jody (Steve) Little of Dresden, Jennifer (Eric) Jewitt of

Rock Hill, S.C., Joel (Rhonda) Moore of Frazeysburg, Kenny (Annette) Moore of Dresden and Kendra (Jack) Hindel of Frazeysburg; 11 grandchildren, Allan (Ann) Moore, Becky (Tremayne) McIntyre, Chris Moore, Seth Little, Kylie (Jeremy Wells) Little, Ty Moore, Ryan Moore, Jasmin (Adam) Williams, Larissa (Curtis) Kincheloe, K.W. Moore IV and Gage Hindel; three step-grandchildren, Abbi (Blair) Maxwell, and Cole and Cassie Carroll; seven great-grandchildren, Aidan and Addison Moore, Jensen and Brody McIntyre, Grace and Haley Moore and Gavin Williams; and four step-great-grandchildren, Trevon and Jaylyn McIntyre, and Coner and Hunter Maxwell.

Also surviving are two brothers, Larry (Marlene) Moore and Marlin (Barb) Moore, both of Killbuck; and a sister-in-law, Adele Moore, of Canton; several nieces and nephews; and his special friends, Ron and Betsy Scurlock, Lawrence and Phyllis Vensil, George Ethell and Buck McCafferty.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold (Betty) Moore and Gene Moore, and a sister, Betty (Jerald) Boyd.

Funeral services were Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at Dresden Chapel of Vensil & Chute Funeral Home, 714 Main Street with the Rev. Sharon Williamson officiating. Burial was in the Moore Family Cemetery.

Edison Gerber, 93 Edison P. Gerber, 93, of Walnut Creek, died Thursday, May 23, 2013, at 4:55 p.m., at Joel Pomerene Hospital in Millersburg following a period of declining health.

Born December 7, 1919, in Wa l n u t Creek Township, he was the son of the late Lester and Selma (Hershberger) Gerber.

He retired from the Belden Brick Company at Sugarcreek after 29 years and hauled milk in the Trail area.

Edison was also an avid Cleveland Indians fan.

He is survived by his wife, the former Ruth Hershberger, whom he married May 30, 1941. Also

Committal services were held on Wednesday, May 29, 2013, in Walnut Creek Mennonite Cemetery, at the Walnut Creek Mennonite Church, with Pastor Don Hamsher officiating.

Joseph Miller, 25 Joseph W. Miller, 25, 4915 Township Road 616, Fredericksburg, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 23, 2013, at his home surrounded by his family. His death followed a three-year battle with cancer.

He was born Nov. 7, 1987 in Millersburg to Wayne L. and Esther (Yoder) Miller and was a member of the Old Order Amish Church.

Surviving in addition to his parents, are siblings, Ian (special friend, Kristina) Miller, Lewis (special friend, Susan) Miller, Michael, Maynard and Marianna Miller, all of the home; his grandmother, Fannie Yoder of Mount Eaton; many uncles, aunts, cousins and friends; and

good friends, Mose and Lovina Yoder.

He was preceded in death by infant brothers, James and Daniel; his grandparents, Levi H. and Anna Miller, Jacob A. Yoder; an aunt and an uncle.

Funeral services were Saturday, May 25, at the residence, with Bishops Elmer Troyer and David Kline officiating. Burial was in the Yoder Cemetery, Salt Creek Township, Holmes County.

Young Lady Knights run, jump, throw like seasoned vets

By KEVIN LYNCH Staff Writer With young athletes, sometimes each event is a learning experience, as they try and understand what they can and can’t do.

“I call it the light bulb effect,” West Holmes coach Rich Patterson said. “Sometimes that light bulb just goes on and the kids figure it out.”

That bulb was burning brightly Saturday at Knights Stadium as the young West Holmes girls track team illuminated the competition, cruising to the Eastern District championship by more than 100 points, piling up 180 points to runnerup Tusky Valley’s 77.50.

Claymont was third at 75.5 followed by Carollton (68) and Indian Valley (51) in the 13-team district field.

“A lot of it is heart,” Patterson said. “These kids are all great competitors.”

The Knights won eight district championships and qualified all four relay teams and 16 individuals for regionals this weekend in Athens.

Capturing district titles were the 4x8 relay team

of Alexis Kandel, Emily Monar, Laina Snyder and Hannah Clark.

Clark also punched her ticket to Athens by winning the 400-meter dash in 59.29, and running the final leg in the 4x400, helping West Holmes to a fourth-place finish in 4:19.55.

“All my hard work is paying off,” the freshman Clark said. “I can still do better. I’m trying.”

Snyder earned two other regional berths by winning the shot put with a throw of 40-10-1/2 and finishing fourth in the high jump (4-10) .

“This is my first year of throwing,” Snyder said. “I like track. It’s been fun this year. When you’re having fun, you don’t run out of energy.”

Snyder credits her throwing coach Pete Norman for her instant success in the shot put.

“Pete’s a really good coach. I like working with him,” she said. “He’s helped me a ton.”

Kennedy Smith claimed and individual title in the 200-meter dash (26.88) and finished second in the 100-meter dash (12.88).

The junior was also part of

the winning 4x100 (50.82) and 4x200 (1:47.49) relay teams of Carly Woodruff, Paiten Strother and Elise Neville.

“Our times weren’t our best, but we’re moving on,” Smith said. “This is one of the best teams to come through here at West Holmes, and I think it’s a miracle that I get to be part of it.”

Strother also took home a district title in the long jump (16-9-1/2) and finished fourth in the 100meter dash.

“You can feel it when you’ve made a good jump on the board and by where you are in the sand,” Strother said.

“Hopefully I can go 18 (feet). That’s my next goal.”

The junior echoed her teammate’s about being part of the winning team and having so much fun doing it.

“It’s great. We’re all close to each other and it’s been great winning everywhere we go,” Strother said. “We all pick on each other in a friendly way. That helps push us to do better. Like when I’m racing Kennedy (Smith) in the 100. We push each

other to do better, and being beside each other is great.”

Woodruff finished right behind Smith in the 200 and the two walked off the track arm-in-arm, chanting, “We’re going to regionals.”

Woodruff also finished second in the 100-meter hurdles (15.76) behind teammate, sophomore Ciera Rose (15.24).

“You’re a gem,” she told her teammate. “It doesn’t matter who finishes first, as long as we both move on.”

Rose and Woodruff both agree they have one goal in mind, and that is to be together on the podium at state.

“When I cross the finish line, I just look to see where my teammate is,” Rose said. “Then we give each other a hug.

We’re competitive, but we’re still pulling for each other.”

Another West Holmes freshman, Hannah Schlegel, earned a pair of regional berths, running a leg in the 4x400, teaming with Clark, Rose and Kandel. Schlegel filled in for injured Kendra Martin, who placed fourth in the 300-hurdles to gain a trip to regionals, but bowed out of her spot on the 4x400.

“It was hard to sit and watch that race, but Hannah did a nice job filling in,” Martin said.

Martin, who has twice had surgery on her knee, said it really started hurting on the last turn of the hurdles, but she had to gut it out to be able to

move on.

“You look at a kid like Hannah Schlegel. She is such a comeptitor, but she is just figuring out how good she is,” Patterson said. The freshman managed a big kick on the final 50 yards of the 1,600 to finish fourth and earn the final qualifying berth in the event with a time of 5:47.82.

“I like to finish strong, and knowing that a trip to regionals was on the line made me push even harder there at the end,” Schlegel said.

Emily Molnar added a third-place finish for the Knights in the 3,200 (12:08.61) to cap off a great day for the Knights.

While most of the girls were celebrating their regional berths, there were some who just missed out, like Kandel’s fifth-place finish in the 800 and Alexis Ellliot’s fifth-place in the 3,200.

“Those near-misses are heart-breaking, but you hope it spears them to do better next year,” Patterson said. “Luckily, none of our seniors were in that sitation. All of them have a year to come back and poissibly go next year.”

Haley Judson finished fourth in pole vault on Thursday to qualify for regionals, as did senior Natalie Abraham, with a second-place in the discus, and the winning 4x800 relay team.

Distance specialist Cully Gordon shaved six seconds off his old mark in the 3,200 to clock a 9:41.37 and set a new school record.

“You got to keep getting faster and faster, training keeps pushing you forward,” Gordon said. “These next couple weeks of practice will be hard, but there’s a lot to look forward to.

“I didn’t realize how far away I was pulling from the two and three guys, and I didn’t realize I was that far ahead of my previous time,” Gordon added. “I didn’t really hear my splits. I was just going. Coach wanted me to keep kicking it up each of the last four laps, so I tried to do that. I was definitely feeling it.”

Grant Hay went 14-6 in the pole vault to earn the other district title for the Knights.

The 4x100 relay team of Matt Casey, Matt Miller, Hay and Luke Ogi set the school record en route to a second-place finish in a time of 43.85.

“The boys have just gotten everybody together off of injuries and I knew they were just coming into their own. It took them a little bit longer than the girls,” West Holmes coach Rich Patterson said. “They are just starting to shine now. Their confidence level is way up.”

Miller also earned a regional berth in the 4x8 on Thursday, as well as finishing third in the 400 (51.89).

“Matt gives everything he has every time out,” Patterson said. “All those guys ran really hard.

They’ve been training very hard. Nobody sees that, how hard they work and improve in practice.”

Sam Boyd also earned a regional berth with his second-place showing in the 1,600 on Thursday.

Ogi had a couple nearmisses, finishing fifth in the 100-meter dash (11.58) and sixth in the 200 (23.96). Andrew Rose added a sixth-place showing in the discus.

Sophomore Nick Roush finished sixth in the pole vault, clearing 11-feet.

Local students receive scholarships from Holmes County Retired Teachers The Holmes County Retired Teachers Association has announced its 2013 Holmes County high school seniors who have received the PM Graham Family Scholarships for 2013-2014.

The scholarships are awarded to students who will be attending either The College of Wooster or Kent State University (or any of Kent State’s branches). Each will received $500 per semester attended.

These scholarships have been awarded since 1985 by the HCRTA and about 300 seniors living in Holmes County have benefitted.

The eight Hiland High School students to receive the award this year are: Emily Aleshire, Brock Fowler, Lindsey Mast, Danielle Miller, Devon Miller, Nicole Miller, Ashley Schlabach and Kyle Troyer.
