rethren Care Village is growing! The non-profit, faithbased Senior Living Community is expanding into Brain Fitness! As part of the Wellness/Community Center, the organization is placing a dedicated interest to strengthening our minds (along with the continued emphasis on body and spirit for older adults). We are blessed to have the facilities and space to accommodate our community’s adult needs as they age.

In 2020, the Village will see growth in higher education at the Community Center by hosting Life-Long Learning programs on relevant topics for Seniors. “Whether you’re approaching retirement or you’re already into retirement years, the new Wellness/Community Center is where you want to gain a better understanding of retirement, and how to plan and manage the maze of questions that come with that next step in life,” said Troy Snyder, President & CEO of Brethren Care Village. “We have some great partners in the community who know the system and break it down for everyone to clearly understand.”

We are very thankful to be able to serve so many others; specifically, our residents, but also our staff and families. In 2019, for the second straight year, Brethren Care Village was awarded the “Best of the Best” in all four categories of Senior Living Services! We are greatly appreciative of all the accolades and take these nominations with a lot of humility and out-word pouring of appreciation for the dedicated staff who make it all happen.

Our Brookwood facility cares for our aging population with memory care needs. Dementia has affected almost every family member in society, and our facility is seeing this population served with a great quality of life that helps them manage each day with dignity and respect. The Bradford Houses take it a step further with memory care, while providing an intimate, five-person family home setting.

accepting all payment types and respecting the wishes of the families and our residents as they age gracefully.

Attached to it are the in-patient, private rooms of our Wasen Rehabilitation Center. The boutique of private rooms affords those returning home after their rehabilitation services plenty of space to enjoy their family as they transition from the hospital setting.

Belmont Tower combines the Independent Living of the Cottages on Troy Snyder campus with the comfort and security of 900-, 600-, and 500-square-foot apartments with chef-prepared meals and clinical services offered in an a la cart menu (only charging for what you actually need).

As if that wasn’t enough, new market rate housing was thought of when building the Wellness Center on the second floor. What are the Odds?

H

EART DISEASE – also commonly called coronary artery disease (CAD), hardening of the arteries, or atherosclerosis – is a leading cause of death for both men and women.

As with all diseases or chronic conditions, the early detection and clinical diagnosis of CAD is key to a successful treatment plan, which may include lifestyle changes, medicines, certain medical procedures and, in some cases, surgical interventions. One important diagnostic tool available for the early detection of CAD is coronary artery calcium scoring. Before we talk about the test, let’s understand a bit about the disease.

The coronary arteries are the large blood vessels that supply your heart muscle with oxygen-rich blood. If blood flow is interrupted or constricted, serious consequences such as a heart attack can result.

CAD is the narrowing or blocking of these arteries by the buildup of plaque – a waxy substance that can accumulate over many years due to a variety of factors. It is this plaque that blocks the blood flow to the heart and can lead to serious health problems. Over time, the plaque may harden or rupture, resulting in a blood clot, which may cause additional narrowing or a complete blockage of the artery.

Many people with CAD do have symptoms. Many do not. Not to be overly dramatic, but for many people, the first sign of CAD is sudden death from a heart attack or life-threatening arrhythmia.

With that sobering thought, what are some symptoms of CAD? Angina is discomfort or a feeling of pressure or squeezing in your chest. It may also be experienced as pain in your shoulders, arms, neck, jaw or back and is often mistaken for indigestion. Angina tends to get worse with activity or emotional stress and lessens when you rest.

Arrhythmia is when the rate or rhythm of your heartbeat is irregular.

Many describe the sensation as a “fluttering” in their chest. Some arrhythmias can cause your heart to suddenly stop beating, which can cause death if not treated immediately. When this happens, it is called sudden cardiac arrest.

A heart attack happens when one or more coronary arteries become completely blocked, cutting off blood flow to a section of the heart. Until blood flow is restored, the affected section of heart muscle begins to die.

Immediate medical care is required, as once heart muscle has died, it cannot be restored and will be replaced by scar tissue, further weakening the heart. Heart attack symptoms are similar to those of angina but may Dr. Avirup Guha, M.D. last longer, be more severe, and be accompanied by shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, light-headedness and a clammy feeling. The pain may go away and come back and may not be relieved during rest as with angina.

Heart failure is when your heart is weakened and cannot pump enough blood to meet your body’s needs. It doesn’t mean your heart stops working completely as the name suggests; it just doesn’t work efficiently. As a result, you may feel short of breath and very tired.

Heart failure can cause your body to retain fluids, causing swelling of the feet, ankles, stomach area and veins in the neck.

So, what is Coronary Artery Calcium Scoring? Numerous studies in medical literature cite Coronary Artery Calcium Scoring as a valuable tool to predict future risk of heart attack.

Coronary Artery Calcium Scoring is a noninvasive computed tomography (CT) scan that takes a series of very thin pictures of your heart and the vessels that supply blood to your heart. These pictures are used to measure the amount of calcium in the plaques built up in the walls of your coronary arteries. Based on these CT images, you will be assigned a coronary artery calcium “score.” The higher your level of calcium, the greater your risk for heart disease or CAD. As UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute cardiologist Dr. Avirup Guha, M.D. explains, “Although Coronary Artery Calcium Scoring is widely available, its use by patients has been limited due to the high cost of the test and the fact that most insurances will not pay for it.” Now, University Hospitals is pleased to offer the test at no cost to our patients.

Your doctor will determine if calcium scoring is right for you based on your medical history, risk factors, age, gender and ethnicity. If it is determined that you would benefit from a calcium scoring test, your doctor will write an order or prescription for the scan. This order will be required when either you or your doctor call to schedule the test.

AKRON CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

A Look Inside Akron Children’s New Mansfield Health Center

A

kron Children’s Hospital has brought together pediatric primary care, urgent care, nearly a dozen of its most in-demand pediatric specialty care practices, and rehabilitation services in one conveniently located medical building at 1029 S. Trimble Road.

The Akron Children’s Mansfield Health Center is one of several such centers opening throughout the region, recognizing the priority parents place on having the highest quality pediatric care for their children in a convenient location, close to home.

The 32,400-square-foot center opened March 26, 2019. Akron Children’s consolidated its services – formerly offered at multiple Richland County locations – in this one building, such as the Akron Children’s Hospital Pediatrics offices on Balgreen Drive in Mansfield and 4th Street in Ontario.

“It’s a true privilege for us to serve families in Richland and surrounding counties, and we are excited about this beautiful new building,” said Grace Wakulchik, president and CEO of Akron Children’s. “But even more than the space, we value the relationships that will blossom here – the relationships between parents and children, and the doctors, nurses and therapists who have devoted their careers to caring for children. One of the promises made by the volunteers who founded Akron Children’s nearly 130 years ago is to treat every child like our own.”

EASY ACCESS, EASY WAYFINDING When patient families enter the building, they will immediately notice an abundance of natural light. The facility features child-friendly colors and artwork, including a whimsical audio-kinetic sculpture by contemporary artist George Rhoads, whose “Incrediball Circus 2” has delighted children in the lobby of Akron Children’s main campus for nearly three decades. Wall murals pay homage to Richland County’s character and charm with images of farmland, race cars and a carousel.

Greeters are on hand to direct families to their appointment, or they can opt to check themselves in at a kiosk. The four clearly marked directions will point families to: • Akron Children’s Hospital Pediatrics – This pediatric primary care practice – blending the two existing Richland County offices – is a medical home for babies, children and teens staffed by board-certified pediatricians, nurse practitioners and pediatric nurses. The practice also has a full-time mental health specialist, available to help with concerns such as depression 4

and anxiety. The phone number is 419-522-3341.

• Urgent Care – Urgent care pediatricians treat common illnesses and minor injuries, such as nausea, earache, coughs and fever, during convenient weekday and weekend hours. This service moved from the Cline Avenue location. Hours are 2 to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. If parents are unsure of whether their child should be taken to an ER versus Urgent Care, here’s a helpful guide: https://bit.ly/2RUINHe • Pediatric Specialty Care – Pediatric specialists in allergy/ immunology, cardiology, gastroenterology, hemostasis and thrombosis, nephrology, orthopedics and urology are available at this location with convenient access to diagnostic tools such as cardiac ultrasound, X-ray, echocardiography and EKG. Each specialty sees patients on regularly scheduled days and times by appointment only.

• Maternal Fetal Medicine – Akron Children’s Maternal Fetal Medicine Center cares for women during high-risk pregnancies. This includes women at risk due to advanced maternal age, diabetes, obesity or a chronic health condition, as well as when the baby is diagnosed with spina bifida, congenital heart disease or another condition that requires special care during and immediately after birth.

• Radiology and Laboratory Medicine – Whether it is taking an X-ray of an infant or drawing blood from a toddler, radiology and lab clinicians always take a child-friendly approach, while following pediatric best practices such as using the most minimal dose of radiation according to “Image Gently” guidelines.

• Rehabilitative Services – Akron Children’s team of physical, occupational and speech therapists help children get back to the things they love to do after surgery, cancer treatment or a traumatic injury. They also help expand skills and improve quality of life for children with chronic illnesses. With all types of toys and special equipment, this workspace is fun and “gym-like” with special zones for fine and gross motor therapies, speech therapy and children who need help with sensory integration. An indoor track connects to an outdoor path for patients learning or regaining skills with walkers, trikes and bikes.

The Akron Children’s Health Center in Mansfield was the first of three such centers to open in 2019. The other health centers included North Canton and Boston Heights. A fourth is planned for Portage County in early 2020.

hen you have elderly parents or relatives, it can be difficult to decide when it is appropriate to suggest a move to a senior care facility. It is never easy to make a move, but the transition to senior living is generally less stressful when your loved one has an active part in helping to make the decision.

There are many senior living options. Choosing the right one depends on each senior’s needs and personal preferences. Here is a short summary of options available through Lutheran Social Services (LSS).

INDEPENDENT LIVING (IL): An independent living community is usually a multi-unit housing development that provides apartment-style living. IL communities may also offer services such as meals, housekeeping, social activities, and transportation.

Seniors often choose to live there for the companionship of friends nearby, as well as the amenities offered. There are also IL facilities that are constructed for seniors on fixed incomes. These buildings offer safe community living at rents based on income level. LSS operates three such buildings locally — Applewood Place I and II in Mansfield and Good Shepherd Villa in Ashland. AL facilities offer help with activities such as bathing, dressing, housekeeping and assistance with medications. In Ashland, Lutheran Village’s continuum of care model embraces all lifestyles and levels of care, allowing residents to enjoy maximum autonomy and independence in the most homelike setting possible. The Good Shepherd in Ashland (TGS) provides awardwinning medical services to meet many complex diagnoses with 24-hour nursing coverage. HOME HEALTH CARE: Of course, many seniors choose to stay at home as long as possible. This time can be extended with home health care or home care. These terms can be used interchangeably but there is an important distinction. While both types of care are provided at home, home care generally means household services such as laundry, cooking, cleaning and running errands. Home health care refers to the skilled level of care that requires medical training. This can include procedures such as IV management, occupational and physical therapy and pain management. LSS Home Health Care offers skilled home health care and will integrate each patient’s needs and support from family with the skills of a multidisciplinary medical team to maximize independence. CONTINUING CARE RETIREMENT COMMUNITIES (CCRC): CCRCs provide care from independent living to assisted living to skilled nursing. They are designed to enable seniors with progressively declining health to remain in one location or to give healthy seniors the peace of mind that all their future needs are covered. While Lutheran Social Services does not operate a CCRC in a single location in Ashland or Richland County, there are plenty of opportunities within the LSS facilities in both communities for seniors to enjoy a healthy and full life with little upheaval or confusion as they age.

VISITING NURSE ASSOCIATION OF OHIO How You Can Prevent a Fall in the Home

A

staggering one-third of seniors who fall in their homes will suffer from injuries including lacerations, fractured bones, or head trauma. The best way to prepare for a fall is to prevent one. The following steps help keep you and your loved one safe at home.

IN THE HOME: • Don’t hold onto furniture or walls • Keep the home well lit • Keep medications in original bottles • Post emergency numbers by the phone • Remove throw rugs • Secure carpeting • Unclutter floors • Use a cane or walker • Utilize handrails on stairs • Wear non-skid shoes

SELF-CARE: • Begin regular exercises • Check your vision yearly • Notify your doctor if you feel dizzy, weak, or unsteady,

or if you fall • Slowly stand after sitting or lying down IF YOU DO FALL: • Take a deep breath and try to relax • Do you have visitors in your house? Will they be able

to hear you if you call out?

• Do not try to stand up immediately. Stand up slowly

and, if you can, get to a phone and dial 911 • If you are able to, push yourself to a phone and dial 911 • If you think you may have to be on the floor for a

longer period of time, try to keep warm by using

How a Primary Care Provider Can Help You

our primary care provider and Convenient Care can both be important components in staying healthy. But, it’s not always easy to determine when to see which provider. Knowing the importance of a primary care provider and the practicality of Convenient Care will help you get the best care possible when you need it all situations.

What is a Primary Care Provider?

Your primary care provider is a doctor, nurse practitioner, or physician’s assistant who manages your overall health over time.

Your PCP is someone you can develop a trusted relationship with.

They get to know you, your history, and your family history and they have the best picture of your overall health.

Primary care providers may work in family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, or pediatrics.

Here are some examples of things to see your primary care provider for: • Regular health screening or wellness visits • Management of chronic conditions • Something is causing you concern or advice for a health problem • Fever, cough, sore throat, cold earaches, or rashes • Unexplained weight changes • Lingering pain • Prescription refills • Minor injuries such as sprains, back pain, minor cuts

and burns, minor broken bones, or minor eye injuries • Bladder or urinary tract infections • Vaccinations • Migraine headaches Other providers or specialists may only get a snapshot of your health. For example, if you go to the Emergency Room, the doctor

When you follow up with your primary care provider, they have access to all your medical records and other information allowing them to see the “big picture.”

Primary care providers are also important for coordinating care when you experience a complicated medical problem. They can refer you to necessary specialists, review all tests and prescriptions, and make sure everyone is working together. What is Convenient Care?

There may be times when issues arise outside of your primary care provider’s regular hours or when there are no appointments available.

Convenient Care is a stepping stone between your primary care provider and the ER. It’s an option for when you need to be seen quickly but your injury or illness isn’t so severe you need to go to the ER. At Convenient Care, patients can walk in and receive services on a first-come, first-served basis. Typically, the insurance co-pay is the same as a regular office visit. The Convenient Care provider will follow up with your primary care provider to let him/her know you were seen.

Catalyst Responds to the Opioid Epidemic

atalyst Life Services is continually evolving to meet the needs of the community. They currently serve North Central Ohio as a private non-profit agency providing comprehensive services to adults and children. Catalyst is made up of many parts – those parts work together as a whole to provide the community with as much support as possible. They offer mental health assistance for all ages and comprehensive programs for substance abuse, vocational rehabilitation, deaf and hard-of-hearing, and crisis intervention, including a 24-hour helpline (419-522-HELP). Catalyst Life Services has been serving the community for 65 years, continually expanding and developing to offer a wide range of services.

The Richland County Mental Health & Recovery Services Board (MH&RSB) broke ground on two new facilities in August 2018. A new detox/withdrawal management center and a second residential facility for women will fill the desperate gap in surrounding communities.

Catalyst was chosen as the service provider for these new facilities projected to open in the Fall 2019.

At Catalyst, we provide a safe and comfortable treatment facility in which an individual can detox from alcohol or drugs with 24/7 medical monitoring. Our goal is to effectively ease the physical and emotional discomfort and pain that can happen when someone stops using alcohol or drugs. We compassionately foster relationships with individuals as they prepare to transition into ongoing substance use and mental health

treatment to enhance recovery.

Our residential services provide a 24-hour supportive therapeutic environment with structured programming seven days a week for individuals suffering from severe substance use disorders as well as cooccurring disorders. We offer gender-specific drug and alcohol programs, as we believe it provides the best opportunity for success. We have a 16bed women’s residential treatment facility and a 16-bed men’s residential treatment facility.

Our outpatient services provide information about addiction, explore how alcohol and/or drugs have affected one’s life, and teach new coping skills to achieve and maintain sobriety. It is a personal opportunity to receive support and experience growth during life’s challenging times.

Our outpatient programs include both individual and group counseling based on the individual’s needs and preferences. We provide highly structured group therapy while allowing individuals to maintain work and family obligations.

If you are a Richland County resident, you may qualify for financial assistance. If you are a Richland County resident and have Ohio Medicaid coverage, all of your services will be covered. Topics to Discuss Before Going Under the Knife

M

any people will find themselves on a surgeon’s table at one point or another. Professional athletes who get injured frequently and, of course, surgeons may be accustomed to the surgical wings of hospitals, but the general public has no such familiarity. Perhaps due to that lack of familiarity, many people are nervous before an impending surgery. Asking the right questions prior to the procedure can calm those nerves and help people approach pending surgeries with confidence rather than fear.

Anesthesia Much of the fear people have in regard to surgery surrounds anesthesia. Few people want to be put completely under, but some surgeries may require that. General anesthesia affects the entire body, and this is the type administered during surgeries that require patients to be unconscious. Regional anesthesia affects a large area of the body, while local anesthesia only numbs a small part. Knowing which type of anesthesia will be administered during a surgery can prepare patients and their families in advance, and may even calm nerves.

Length of surgery Patients and their families often want to know how long surgeries will last. Patients should discuss this with their physicians and surgeons, especially if family and friends will be in the waiting room while a surgery is performed. If surgeons note there’s a possibility that a surgery will be extended after it begins, patients should let family and friends know this, even if they don’t want to worry them. People in the waiting room will grow concerned and fearful, possibly unnecessarily, if a surgery is not completed within a certain amount of time.

Pain Pain might be a side effect of surgery. Knowing this in advance won’t raise alarm bells if patients are discharged and begin to experience pain upon arriving home. Ask surgeons if pain is a side effect of your surgery, and where than pain is likely to be felt and for how long. Many people are prescribed opioids to address pain after surgery, but such medications can be addictive. Ask about opioid alternatives, as well as any non-prescription relaxation techniques or therapies that may help manage pain.

Blood clots Pain is not the only potential side effect of surgery. Some surgeries can increase patients’ risk of developing deep vein thrombosis, a type of blood clot that can travel to the lungs and block blood flow. Sometimes referred to as DVT, deep vein thrombosis can be deadly, though it’s often treatable when caught quickly. Certain factors, including age, whether or not you’re a smoker and a history of clots, can increase a person’s risk of developing DVT after surgery. Blood thinners may be prescribed as a precautionary measure.

These are just a handful of topics to discuss with a physician prior to surgery. Patients should not hesitate to ask as many questions as they need to before going in for surgery.

The Effects of Stress on Your Body

S

tress affects people of all ages from all walks of life.

Though work is a primary source of stress for many people, a recent survey from the American Psychological Association found that stress is more than just work-related.

In its 2017 “Stress in America” survey, the APA found that the future of the nation, money and violence and crime were significant sources of stress for more than half of survey participants. That’s a dangerous notion, as the Mayo Clinic notes that the effects of the stress on the human body are considerable. Though everyone experiences and responds to stress differently, these are some of the more common effects of stress, courtesy of the Mayo Clinic.

MENTAL SIDE EFFECTS Stress can have an adverse effect on mood and has even been linked to depression, which the World Health Organization reports is the leading cause of disability across the globe. People suffering from stress also may experience anxiety, restlessness and feelings of being overwhelmed. In addition, stress can compromise a person’s ability to focus, adversely affecting a person’s ability to complete their work-related tasks. That’s not insignificant, as 61 percent of respondents in the 2017 “Stress in America” survey reported that work was a significant source of their stress.

PHYSICAL SIDE EFFECTS Stress affects more than the mind, manifesting itself physically in various ways. The Mayo Clinic reports that common physical side effects of stress include headache, muscle tension or pain, including chest pain, fatigue, and a change in sex drive. Upset stomach also may be a byproduct of stress. People dealing with stress may even have trouble sleeping.

BEHAVIORAL SIDE EFFECTS Behavior also can be affected by stress, which may cause some people to abuse drugs or alcohol. Some may even turn to tobacco, either becoming a smoker or smoking more if they’re already smokers. Smoking has been linked to a host of negative physical side effects, including an increased risk of developing cancer. Angry outbursts, social withdrawal and overeating or undereating are some additional potential side effects of stress on the body.

Panic Disorder

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, panic disorder is a type of anxiety disorder characterized by recurrent, unexpected panic attacks. Panic attacks occur suddenly and are periods of intense fear that may include palpitations, pounding heartbeat and/or accelerated heart rate. People in the midst of a panic attack may also experience shortness of breath or feel as though they are choking or being smothered. Feelings of impending doom may also occur during a panic attack. Anxiety disorders, including panic disorders, may be caused by the interaction of certain genetic and environmental factors. These factors include behavioral inhibition in childhood, exposure to stressful life events in childhood and adulthood, anxiety disorders in close biological relatives and a parental history of mental disorders. Anxiety disorders are generally treated with psychotherapy or medication, or a combination of both.

decade ago, many healthcare professionals would have scoffed at the notion that a person’s mouth could be a factor or the cause of many chronic diseases. The mouth and the body were viewed as two separate entities and, consequently, the medical and dental professions did not work as collaboratively as they could have.

Fast-forward to today and there is overwhelming evidence that our oral cavity is a contributing factor in many of the chronic conditions that plague our society. Heart disease, strokes, diabetes, and certain cancers have all been proven to be associated with the harmful bacteria within our mouth. In a nutshell, these bacteria contribute to inflammation throughout the body, which plays a negative role with the previously mentioned diseases. One recent study even found a potential link between a specific oral bacteria and Alzheimer’s disease, which may revolutionize the treatment for this debilitating disease. However, not all oral bacteria are harmful. As a dental office, it is our job to maximize the beneficial bacteria and minimize the harmful ones.

Additionally, not all health problems are strictly related to oral bacteria. Sleep apnea and other sleep-related breathing disorders are becoming an epidemic in the United States. Sleep apnea commonly presents as snoring or gasping for air during the night. An apnic event involves stoppage of breathing for 10 seconds or more, multiple times every hour. This puts an incredible amount of stress on the body and has been shown to shorten lives by decades. Sleep related breathing disorders in children can cause growth and cognitive impairments, as well as contribute to such conditions as ADHD, behavioral problems, and crowded/crooked teeth.

BREAST CANCER

Know the Screening Guidelines

C

ancer screenings are widely recognized as a vital component of personal healthcare. Catching cancer in its earliest stages greatly improves patients’ survival rates, and screening is often the most effective way to find cancer before it grows and spreads to other parts of the body.

Women who recognize the importance of breast cancer screenings are also likely recognize just how conflicting advice about screening is. For instance, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists breast cancer screening recommendations from seven different organizations on their website. These organizations include the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, the American Cancer Society, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, and the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Women who visit the site expecting consensus among these respected organizations might be surprised to learn that no such universal agreement exists.

Breast cancer is a complicated disease, so it’s understandable why there would be differences of opinion within the medical community regarding when women should and should not be screened. But recognizing that breast cancer screening is a complicated issue won’t help women learn when they should be screened. Working with a physician they trust and being open and honest about their health and their family history of breast cancer can help women make the most informed decisions about when and how often to be screened.

In the meantime, women can consider these screening guidelines from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, whose cancer experts devised the guidelines based on their extensive experience treating breast cancer patients.

WOMEN AT AVERAGE RISK The MSKCC defines being at average risk as having: • no symptoms of breast cancer • no history of invasive breast cancer (breast cancer that has spread beyond the milk ducts) • no history of ductal or lobular carcinoma in situ (abnormal cells that are confined to the milk duct, or lobule) • no history of atypia (atypical hyperplasia, a form of benign breast disease) • no family history of breast cancer in a first-degree relative (parent, sibling, or child) • no suggestion or evidence of a hereditary syndrome such as a BRCA mutation (evidence would be multiple first- and/or second-degree relatives with breast cancer or ovarian cancer) • no history of mantle radiation (a radiation therapy used to treat Hodgkin’s disease and some other conditions) MSKCC recommends that women between the ages of 25 and 40 who are at average risk schedule an annual clinical breast examination. Women 40 and older should have an annual mammogram in addition to their annual clinical breast exam. Women with dense breast tissue may be advised to have an ultrasound as well. All women should consider performing monthly self breast exams beginning at age 20. Doing so helps women become familiar with their breasts, and that familiarity may alert them to abnormalities down the road.

WOMEN AT ABOVE-AVERAGE RISK Women whose risk of developing breast cancer is aboveaverage face more complicated screening decisions. This includes women with a family history of breast cancer in a first-degree relative (parent, sibling, or child); history of atypical hyperplasia (a form of benign breast disease); history of lobular carcinoma in situ (abnormal cells that are confined to the milk duct, or lobule); history of mantle radiation (a radiation therapy used to treat Hodgkin’s disease and some other conditions) before the age of 32; genetic predisposition for breast cancer (for example, women with a BRCA mutation).

Many people, who are battling a substance use disorder (SUD), equally struggle with depression, anxiety, and a history of traumatic life experiences that are just as difficult to deal with as their substance use concerns. Often the mental health concerns are at the heart of a SUD. When people struggle with both a SUD and a mental health issue at the same time it is called a “co-occurring disorder.” The federal government estimates that over 50% of people with a SUD also have a co-occurring mental health issue. Appleseed specializes in working with people to enable them to overcome what has happened to them in order to recover from both their SUD and their mental or emotional concerns.

INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING: Our counselors use evidenced based and effective solutions to help individuals of all ages. Techniques such as Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, TraumaFocused-Cognitive-Behavioral-Therapy, Integrated Family and Systems Treatment, Mindfulness, Yoga, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) are all used to help our clients recover and maintain recovery going forward.

CASE MANAGEMENT: Case managers assist individuals in securing the necessary supports they need to gain and maintain recovery. Case managers also teach and support the integration of key coping skills such as anger management, effective communication, and problems solving skills.

GROUP THERAPY: Appleseed offers group therapy to individuals who want to learn specific coping skills. Groups such as Early Recovery Skills, My Ongoing Recovery Experience, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy as well as other groups are offered to support recovery.

MEDICATIONS: The psychiatrists at Appleseed use medication alongside counseling and case management to help support individuals in recovery.

Types of blood donations

onating blood is a selfless decision. Blood donors may not know it, but they save lives every day.

According to the American Red Cross, someone in the United States needs blood every two seconds. Cancer patients, organ transplant recipients and accident victims are just some of the types of people who benefit from blood donations every day.

There are different types of blood donations, and making the right type of donation can ensure a contribution is as valuable as it can be.

The following is a rundown of the various types of blood donations, courtesy of the Red Cross.

WHOLE BLOOD DONATION “Whole blood” is the term used to describe the blood that flows through your veins. This blood contains red cells, white cells and platelets, suspended in plasma. A whole blood donation is the most flexible type of donation because it can be transfused in its original form or used to help multiple people after being separated into its specific components (i.e., red cells, plasma and platelets). The donation itself does not take much time, though donors should expect to spend about an hour at the donation center, which includes their post-donation recovery time. All blood types make ideal whole blood donations.

POWER RED DONATION A power red donation allows donors to donate two units of red blood cells during a single donation. But unlike a whole blood donation, donors who make a power red donation have their plasma and platelets returned to them during the donation process. A power red donation typically takes around 30 minutes longer than a whole blood donation, but the Red Cross notes that power red donors may feel more hydrated after donating than whole blood donors because they don’t lose the liquid portion of their blood during the donation process. Power red donations are typically given to trauma patients and newborns and may be administered during emergency transfusions during births. Blood types that are ideal for power red donations include O positive, O negative, A negative, and B negative.

PLATELET DONATION Platelets are tiny cells in the blood that form clots and stop bleeding.

Platelet donations take between 2.5 to three hours, and platelets are typically given to people fighting cancer, chronic disease and traumatic injuries. Platelet donations last just five days, so platelet donors are in high demand. During a platelet donation, platelets and some plasma are collected by an aspheresis machine, and red cells and most of the plasma is then returned to donors. Platelets are not collected at blood drives, and prospective platelet donors must visit Red Cross donation centers. People with A positive, A negative, B positive, O positive, AB positive, and AB negative blood types are ideal platelet donors.

AB ELITE PLASMA DONATION AB plasma can be given to anyone regardless of their blood type.

During an AB elite donation, plasma is collected and separated from other components in the blood. Red blood cells and platelets are then 2019

returned to donors. Donors with AB blood are ideal for AB elite plasma donations, which only take a few minutes more than a standard blood donation. Type AB plasma is the only universal type and can be given to patients of any blood type, making these donations especially valuable.

Big Toe Pain? Relief is in Sight

any people give little thought to their big toes, while others are plagued by a painful condition that limits or eventually totally restricts movement of that allimportant toe. Once the big toe starts to hurt, it’s obvious just how much we use it to get around, bend over or even stand. Pain in the big toe can be caused from a common degenerative disorder known as hallux limitus in its earlier stages, and hallux rigidus later on. It can turn everyday motions such as walking, stooping and climbing stairs into a struggle. The good news is that proper treatment can bring tremendous relief.

How do you know if you have hallux limitus? First, it starts out as a painful big toe joint that has stiffness and usually a little loss of motion.

As the disorder progresses, arthritis sets in and continually worsens.

Bone spurs (overgrowths) can develop, and the toe increasingly loses its range of motion. At the end stage (hallux rigidus), all motion is lost, and the toe is rigid. When it gets to that point, walking is severely impaired, and pain may be present even at rest.

Shoes can be difficult to wear due to bone spurs, and how you walk or gait changes that were made to compensate for the painful toe can

lead to other problems such as pain in other areas.

TREATMENT OPTIONS:

Conservative treatment options include wearing custom-made insoles (orthotics) to correct the structural foot abnormalities that are causing the problem, changing footwear, taking oral anti-inflammatory medications, receiving cortisone injections and attending physical therapy. Surgery is the next step if none of these options relieve the pain. No matter which method we prescribe, the end result is typically the same: a big toe that feels remarkably better.

Early diagnosis and treatment can help alleviate the symptoms of hallux limitus through conservative treatment options.

WELL - CHILD VISITS

xpecting parents will soon discover that having a child sparks many changes in their lives. As infancy rolls into toddlerhood and beyond, there is usually one constant in the busy lives of new families: the pediatrician. Children visit their pediatricians at regular intervals, and these doctors are invaluable sources of support and care.

Pediatricians provide well-child services throughout youngsters’ childhoods. Health checkups start from the day the baby is born and continue until a child reaches adulthood. JAMA Pediatrics says there are many benefits of well-child visits. One of the key aspects of these checkups is tracking a child’s growth and development, including physical, cognitive, emotional, and social progress.

Another component of well-child visits is to prevent injury and illness. When parents come in for these visits, the staff will likely go over the appropriate safety protocol for that child’s age and milestone. This may include car seat safety checks, preventing falls, choking hazards, and safety when entering school.

Bright Futures/American Academy of Pediatrics developed a set of comprehensive health guidelines for well-child care, and many pediatricians follow these schedule and screening guidelines.

Visits often start at one-month intervals, and then increase by two- and three- month durations until the child is two years old.

After 2.5 years of age, annual visits become the norm. The reason that earlier visits occur so often is because early childhood is a period of rapid development. In addition, various vaccinations are recommended to protect children from communicable diseases.

These immunizations must be administered according to schedule to be most effective.

Well-child visits are also opportunities for screening tests and physical examinations. Exams typically involve checking blood pressure, vision, hearing, and general blood tests and urinalysis.

Many parents use checkups as an opportunity to ask questions about development and ensure that children are safe to participate in school sports and extracurricular activities as well. Parents can come equipped with questions to ask the doctor during well-child appointments to make the most of their visits.

The AAP says well-child visits should begin from three to five days old. Therefore, expecting parents should find a pediatrician for their child as soon as possible to ensure that well-child visits can begin immediately after the child is born.
