Living in Wooster Well-known Woosterians General Reasin Beall — Beall Avenue is named for one of Wooster’s most notable residents, War of 1812 General Reasin Beall. Beall Avenue has been beautified with buried power lines, period streetlights, stone walls and brick sidewalks through the Wooster Streetscape Program. Born in Maryland, Beall served under legendary Revolutionary War General “Mad” Anthony Wayne and went on to become brigadier general of Ohio Volunteers in 1812. Active in politics, he lived the last 28 years of his life in Wooster, and he is buried in the Wooster Cemetery. Construction began on his home in 1816 and was finished in the early 1820s. Beall’s imposing brick house is the oldest surviving residential structure in Wooster. The Wayne County Historical Society is in the process of restoring the house to its original stylings.

Arthur H. Compton — Some Wooster residents may be unaware one of Wooster’s native sons went on to win a Nobel Prize. Arthur Holly Compton was born in Wooster in 1892, the son of the Dean of the College of Wooster. Compton graduated from the college in 1913 and received his M.A. and Ph.D. from Princeton in 1914 and 1916, respectively. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1927 for the discovery of the Compton Effect and his extensive research of X-rays. Compton’s brother Karl Taylor Compton was also a successful physicist who went on to serve as president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Of the three brothers, Arthur had the widest resume, but the other two brothers were also pretty awesome. Karl was President of M.I.T. and Wilson was President of the State College of Washington (now Washington State University). Because Arthur was Chancellor of Washington College of St. Louis, all three brothers were heads of Universities at the same time, the first triumvirate ever! In addition, their Mother was the American Mother of the Year in 1939!

August Imgard — A German immigrant, Imgard is widely recognized as having the first Christmas tree in the region, perhaps in the state. He is surely the first to popularize the practice. As the story goes, in 1847, Imgard cut a blue spruce tree from a woods outside town (near where Rubbermaid used to be), had the Wooster village tinsmith construct a star, and placed the tree in his house, decorating it with paper ornaments and candy canes. The American Confectioners’ Association officially recognizes Imgard as the first ever to put candy canes on a Christmas tree; the canes were all-white, with no red stripes. Imgard is buried in the Wooster Cemetery.

Michael Nachtrieb — Born in Wooster in 1835, Nachtrieb became a regionally famous artist, producing portraits of notables such as Robert E. Lee and Abraham Lincoln. Nachtrieb also painted Wooster’s bestknown citizens, and the Wayne County Historical Society collection holds numerous portraits and still lifes by him. His home was located along Beall Avenue. In March 2003, a Nachtrieb painting of General “Mad” Anthony Wayne (for whom Wayne County is named) was discovered at an auction and bought by several Wayne County officials. Mr. Nachtrieb was also an accomplished painter. He painted three identical portraits of Abraham Lincoln (based on a photograph of Lincoln): One is in the Smithsonian Institute; one is in Lincoln’s home in Springfield, Ill.; and one is at the Wayne County Historical Society. He also painted a portrait of Robert E. Lee, also at the Society.

— Dr. Secrest was Ohio’s first State Forester and

became director of the OARDC in 1937. In addition to developing many of Ohio’s re-forestation programs, Secrest developed the Wooster Arboretum, which was dedicated to him and received his name in 1950.

Today the Secrest Arboretum is known as one of the finest long-term plant repositories in the United States. It was through Secrest’s efforts that Ohio passed a 1915 law enabling the state to acquire scenic lands to be used for reforestation and recreation. Today those lands make up many of Ohio’s state forests.

John Sloane — Although he was born in Pennsylvania, Sloane moved to Ohio in his early youth. He became a state representative in 1803 (Ohio’s first year as a state), and he served as a colonel in the War of 1812. Active in public service, Sloane’s most notable titles included Secretary of State of Ohio (1841-1844) and Treasurer of the United States (1853-1856).

He died in Wooster May 15, 1856, and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Timeline of Events 1803 — Surveyors and brothers John, William and Joseph Larwill, William Henry and John Bever explored Ohio’s interior, laying out townships in the northeastern part of the state.

1808 — The Larwill brothers, together with William Henry and John Bever, staked claims to land that today makes up the heart of downtown Wooster (which was named for General David Wooster, a Revolutionary War officer from Connecticut).

1810 — John Bever built the first brick house in Wooster.

1814 — A school and a church appeared in town.

1817 — Wooster was incorporated.

1852 — The Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne & Chicago (later the Pennsylvania) Railroad laid track through Wayne County.

1870s — Wooster’s industries included a steam-engine plant, several tanneries and grist mills, the McDonald farm equipment company and the Wooster Brush Company, which is still in business.

1865 — An itinerant Presbyterian minister stopped on a hill north of town to admire the view. Impressed with the site’s natural beauty, he lobbied the Ohio Synod of Presbyterian churches to establish a college there. A year later, the University of Wooster (which later became the College of Wooster) was incorporated.

1870 — The University of Wooster opened with an enrollment of 34 students.

1914-19 — World War I: Wooster residents united to contribute food and manufactured goods. They also supported the war effort by exceeding their quota of Liberty Bonds. Wooster lost 18 men in the war, with an unknown number wounded.

1929-41 — During the Great Depression, a federal Civilian Conservation Corps camp off Geyers Chapel Road did a great deal of work in the area, including clearing out creeks, building bridges and clearing snow.

Today — Wooster is a classic, small American city, with a charming and historic downtown full of unique dining and shopping opportunities. More such facilities are located on the fringes of the city, especially the North End, as well. With state-of-the-art recreational and educational facilities, beautiful parks and high-quality fine arts organizations, Wooster residents enjoy cultural opportunities most often found in large metropolitan areas.

Wooster sits in the heart of Wayne County amidst rolling fields and family farms. The city is home to many long-standing industries, including the aforementioned Wooster Brush Company, and The Daily Record, the county’s only daily newspaper. The Campus of the Wayne County Historical Society Features Seven Structures: The General Reasin Beall Homestead – War of 1812 veteran, General Reasin Beall, began construction on his home in 1816 and finished in the early 1820s. It is the oldest surviving grand-style home in Wayne County. The first floor of the Beall home has been structurally renovated, refurbished, and furnished in the era of the 1850’s-1860’s. In addition, an 1820-1830 kitchen was reconstructed in the basement. The second floor is currently being refurbished and furnished in the 1820-1830’s era.

The Kister Building – The first floor contains the offices, conference room and research library. It also contains the Special Exhibit Room featuring rotating exhibits and will contain a new Welcome Center which will be constructed in early 2014.

The Carriage Barn – Originally located at the north end of Wooster, the 1880’s carriage barn was reconstructed in 2012. It contains several horse drawn vehicles, Gerstenslager buggies, children’s carriages and several transportation-related items of interest.

The upper level houses additional exhibits related to the history of fire-fighting and fire and rescue squads in the county.

Log Cabin – The 1830’s Log Cabin, given to the society in the mid 1900’s was dismantled and reconstructed adjacent to the 1873 Schoolhouse. It contains a display depicting the difficult and exacting lifestyle in early Wayne County.

County Home One-room Schoolhouse and Smokehouse – Recently moved from the Wayne County Home, this building was used as a one room schoolhouse from 1852 through the 1870’s for orphans and dependent children until the County Children’s Home was built.

Then is was used as a smoke house and for related agricultural uses.

Permanent Exhibit Area – Currently, the permanent exhibits in the basement include Farming in Wayne County, Birds and Animals The General Mercantile Store & The Ladies Dress Shop – This mid- from the St. Louis World’s Fair, Prehistoric Relics, Tools, and 19th century Fredricksburg building was reconstructed on this site in Arrowheads. Animals — Domestic animals are prohibited from running free in the city. All dogs in Wayne County must be registered annually with the county auditor and wear a registration tag. Pet owners are responsible for cleaning up after their animals on property other than their own. Within the county, restrictions on some animals apply. Mopeds — Motorized bicycles (or mopeds) must have a license plate and be operated by a licensed individual.

Open Burning — Except for food preparation, open burning is prohibited. Groups wishing to hold bonfires must obtain a permit from the local fire department.

Parades/Street Closure — Any group wishing to hold a parade or close a street in Wooster must obtain a permit from the Wooster Community Center. An application for a permit must be filed at least two weeks before the event. Any application requesting 2 police officers must be filed at least 30 days in advance. The Arts professional productions encompassing the best of lyric theatre, particularly rare shows that were successful in their day and are worthy of revival. It is the only company in North America, and perhaps the world, to present 19th- and 20th-century operettas and musicals from such a broad selection of American and European composers.

More Information — The cast performs with an orchestra in the intimate Freedlander Theatre, which seats just under 400 people. (Nov. 1, 2014) More Information — Since 1987, Wooster has been home to Ohio’s biggest one-day literary event, designed to give the reading public the opportunity to meet authors and purchase new autographed books. As a result, monetary grants have funded schools, libraries and other literacy programs. Held in Fisher Auditorium on the OARDC campus, it is a literacy project of The Wooster Book Company and is open to the public.

Administration — The 112-year-old Walnut St. Elementary School houses administrative offices for a staff of 6. A faculty of 40 professional art educators and professional artists teach regular classes and special outreach programs in the facility’s 10 large classrooms.

More Information — Last year, area residents of all ages enrolled in classes and workshops in a variety of art disciplines, including visual arts, pottery, music, theatre and dance. The building also houses a 200-seat auditorium, a conference room and two professional galleries, The Gault Gallery and Roberta Looney Workshop Gallery. Both house local, regional and national exhibits which are free to the community.

The center boasts its own pre-professional ballet company, the Wayne Center Ballet. In April 2014, the company will present “Alice in Wonderland and Other Dances.”

The Wayne Center Ballet is known locally for “The Nuctcracker” performed every other year, with the next performance scheduled for December 2014. “The Nutcracker” has become a community tradition which has an outstanding reputation throughout northeast Ohio. The Wayne Center for the Arts Children’s Chorus performs a winter and spring concert and also performs at several community events through the year. This outstanding children’s chorus is comprised of two choirs and more than 60 members.

Each year the Arts Center hosts a wealth of special events, including concerts, exhibit openings, and children’s theatre performances. The Arts Center also hosts the annual Functional Ceramics Exhibit and Workshop, which draws more than 200 potters from throughout the country.

More Information — St. Mary School offers an excellent education and is open to students of every faith. Every seventh and eighth grade student at St. Mary School is provided with a wireless laptop computer. Smartboard technology equipment is used in every classroom. The curriculum also includes an expansive Spanish program, with the Spanish teacher in residence two days a week.

The school utilizies both the Accelerated Reader and Accelerated Math computer-based programs with the regular curriculum.

These programs allow the teachers the flexibility to individualize each student’s learning. The science program is greatly enhanced by a state-of-the-art science lab which all grades use weekly. For 12 straight years, college presidents and deans surveyed

by U.S. News & World Report have recognized Wooster for its “outstanding” undergraduate research opportunities and senior capstone program. The only other school to share that distinction: Princeton University. The presidents and deans also ranked Wooster one of the top 10 liberal arts colleges in America where “the faculty has an unusually strong commitment to undergraduate teaching.”

Founded in 1866, Wooster enrolls approximately 2,000 students, who choose from more than 50 academic programs in the sciences, humanities, business and the arts.

Wooster offers an excellent, comprehensive liberal arts education, culminating in a rigorous senior project, in which each student works one-on-one with a faculty mentor to conceive, organize and complete a significant research project on a topic of the student’s own choosing. Through this distinctive program, every Wooster student develops abilities valued by employers and graduate schools alike: initiative, selfconfidence, independent judgment, creative problem solving, and strong written and oral communication skills.

Almost a third of Wooster’s students play intercollegiate athletics, a third perform in at least on musical group, and a quarter are involved in theatre and the arts.

Notable Wooster alumni include award-winning filmmakers Duncan Jones ’95, director of Source Code and Moon, and J.C. Chandor ’96, writer and director of Margin Call and All Is Lost; Jennifer Haverkamp ’79, director of the Environmental Defense Fund’s international climate program; Donald Kohn ’64, former vice chairman of the Federal Reserve; Laurie Kosanovich ’94, general counsel for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; and Sangram Sisodia ’77, director of the Center for Molecular Neurobiology at the University of Chicago.

Working with the community — Throughout the year, the college hosts scores of lectures, concerts, art exhibitions, theatre and dance performances, and athletic events which are open to the community. More than 600 students in the Wooster Volunteer Network are engaged in community service with a variety of local organizations, from Every Woman’s House and the Village Network to the Humane Society.

Recent developments — In 2012, the college opened the Scot Center, a 123,000 square foot student athletic and recreation center and the Collaborative Research Center in Andrews Library, and launched APEX, a new, integrated approach to student academic and career advising, planning, and experiential learning.

AGRICULTURAL TECHNICAL INSTITUTE

ATI’s 650 students are involved in programs that prepare them to go on to bachelor’s-degree programs and beyond. Ohio State ATI, a part of Ohio State’s College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, offers a number of associate degrees in agricultural, horticultural and engineering technologies, laboratory and environmental sciences and business. ATI students can receive associate of applied science degrees in 15 majors, associate of science degrees in 17 majors, plus a certificate of competency in bioenergy, sports/ commercial turf equipment or hydraulic service and repair.

ATI also offers customized training and work force development programs through its Business Training and Educational Services office. Services include need assessments, basic and technical work force development, quality initiatives, industrial maintenance training, leadership and supervision courses, sales and customer-service training, industry-specific training in agriculture and horticulture, performance-improvement interventions and Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

The 50-acre ATI campus has two major classroom buildings, a student activities center, greenhouse complex, and student apartment village. Teaching facilities on campus include a beautiful tropical-plant conservatory, an engineering lab and a floral-design studio.

Four miles from the central campus, ATI also operates the Grace Drake Learning Laboratory, which has more than 1,700 acres of working farmland, where students participate in hands-on learning experiences connected to agriculture. The acreage includes a computerized dairy facility with more than 100 Holstein, Jersey and Brown Swiss milking cows as well as a progressive beef and sheep operation. The Equine Center, dedicated in 2000, features a 46-stall barn, breeding lab, indoor and outdoor arenas, foaling facilities and 85 acres of pasture.

ATI also owns and operates Hawk’s Nest Golf Course in Creston.

Recent developments — Recent additions to the roster of academic programs Associate of Science degrees in biochemical sciences, with specializations in biology, food science, and preveterinary medicine; renewable energy with specializations in bioenergy and solar/wind power; and community leadership with specializations in community and extension education and leadership. In 2012, ATI dedicated a new beef cattle handling facility designed by noted animal behaviorist Temple Grandin.

History — In 1882, the Ohio General Assembly established the Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station, which leased land on The Ohio State University’s campus. Ten years later, the station moved to Wooster. In 1965, the name was changed to the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center to more accurately reflect its mission and programs. In 1982, the center formally merged with Ohio State.

The OARDC today — OARDC-supported scientists conduct research in agriculture, natural resources, human ecology, food science, and related fields. Their findings benefit food, farming, families and the environment. Now, as in 1882, their work leads to better living — economic opportunities and an improved quality of life — for all Ohioans. OARDC is the research arm of Ohio State’s College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. The center is supported by appropriated state and federal funding (for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2007, $35.8 million and $6.3 million, respectively) and by grants, gifts, contracts and other revenue sources (total: $36.4 million).

OARDC employs a total of 595 research faculty and support staff statewide, with 300 of those employees located in Wooster. The college also offers five associate degree and several certificate programs. General education courses are available at Wayne in a smaller classroom setting and at a lower cost than many larger colleges and universities. Additional UA degrees and programs offered in their entirety on the Orrville campus include bachelor’s degrees in social work, business administration and organizational supervision as well a Saturday MBA program and a master’s degree in principalship.

Community events – Wayne College’s Community Connections series offers many annual events that are open to the public, including performances by The American Shakespeare Center on Tour, The Writing Awards and Workshops, the Orrville International Festival and an Administrative Professionals Day seminar. The college also hosts several lectures and art exhibitions throughout the year. The college’s athletic teams, which compete in the ORC conference, include men’s basketball and golf as well as women’s basketball and volleyball.

Recent developments – In 2013, the college completed renovation of three science labs to include state-of-theart equipment that incorporates the latest technology for anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and biology students. Safety and technology were major themes in the upgrade to the nearly 4,600 sq. ft. of space which now provides greater usability and collaborative learning opportunities. Each of the three separate areas is designed to be a smart classroom with computers and projection technology that enable faculty to integrate lecture and lab together for optimal learning. Also in 2013, the college opened a second entryway to campus that includes a community walking path lit by 25 low voltage street lights and 36 additional parking spaces next to the Student Life Building, 12 of which are handicap-accessible.

The Wayne County Board of Developmental Disabilities — This organization operates the programs in support of Early Intervention, Ida Sue School, Service and Support Administration, Family Services, Community Employment and Transportation Services. These programs assist children and adults with developmental disabilities to live, work and play within their communities.

Community Employment Services — The CES department assists individuals, who are eligible, with transitional services from their school setting to an appropriate vocational placement; with integrated employment being the first option.

This “discovery” process begins at the age of 14 and will continue to the day they leave school. The CES department also provides a transitional program that builds upon the skills of an individual’s education in a classroom setting for part of a day, and provides community exposure mentorships for the other portion. This program will assist individuals with exploring different facets of employment and finding the skills they will need to be successful. When employment is found, the CES department will provide a job coach to work with individual until they are fully capable of their specific job. The department will provide constant follow along and will be available to all companies to assist as necessary.

Mission — The mission of the DD, in partnership with enrollees, families, staff and the community, is to provide choices and options, based on individual and family preferences, enabling a quality of life satisfying to the individual in learning, living, working and participating in the community.

Ida Sue School — This school provides programs that specialize in the education of children: • Early Intervention Program — serves children ages birth to 3 years; • School-Ages Program — serves children ages 6-21 who are identified with multiple disabilities and severe medical needs through the Ida Sue School as well as community based collaborative classrooms. The school-age program includes academics as well as daily-living-skill classes, vocational programs, job-training classes and transition-to-work classes to give students a well-rounded education and prepare them for adult life and employment. In addition, the Ida Sue School provides speech, occupational and physical therapies and nursing services.

Adult Day Services — The Wayne County Board of Developmental Disabilities Service and Support Administration (SSA) works to coordinate day services for all eligible individuals. Day Services can be acquired from multiple day service providers throughout the county and include a wide variety of activities to enjoy and vocational skill building opportunities as well as contracted work experiences. Each individual has the freedom of choice regarding the day program they may wish to attend through use of available waiver funding.

While the blueprint includes addressing core emergency needs, we feel it is important to get to the root cause of what pushes people into crisis mode. That is why our focus is on education, income and health—the building blocks for a good quality of life. A quality education leads to stable employment and without good health, none of this is possible.

United Way isn’t about short-term charity, it’s about driving lasting change. We look at the big picture – what resources are lacking, down to food, shelter and health needs, and how can we address that to keep kids and families on track to self-sufficiency?

Since no one person or program provides the tools to help put a person’s life back together, we continue to be the only organization focused on the big picture - how do we keep the whole continuum in tack so that people can move from crisis to stability?

All but 1% of all dollars raised locally stays local and are invested in the lives of those who live in Wayne and Holmes Counties. We try to maintain our overhead between 15% and 16%. That means that 84 -85 cents out of every donated dollar goes towards helping someone.

Each year, we invite the community in to help us review the programs requesting funds at our annual Allocation Process. We all share in the responsibility that community dollars are used effectively and efficiently, and that they are achieving positive, measurable results.
