Companies often treat the idea of developing a plan around a “safe culture” as something that would be “nice to have one day,” but it’s put on the back burner as other initiatives and business goals take priority. It’s not until a major incident – or even worse, a fatality – occurs that these companies finally get serious about safety. By then it’s too late, resulting in a demoralized workforce, a tarnished reputation and a feeling of regret that they weren’t more proactive. Risks to the employees and organization should be identified and prioritized, knowing that high-risk issues will require the greatest commitment to training to achieve behavioral change. In an ideal world, companies want to prioritize every risk. Assign training that is relevant to the employees’ job duties and responsibilities. Forcing employees to take training that isn’t relevant can sour them on all compliance training and reduce its effectiveness. Cultural change has to start at the top. A safe, people-centric culture needs to have the full support of the leadership team. Leaders can demonstrate their commitment to safety and compliance culture by including a video of themselves in the training. Leaders should view training as an opportunity to directly communicate expectations of what is and is not acceptable employee behavior. It is where employees become aware of what their leaders expect of them, how they will be held accountable, and how valuable training is for them and their family. The good news is that there’s still time for most companies to fully embrace and integrate safety compliance into their culture. It all starts with learning to articulate the benefits of a safety culture and knowing the risks that occur when a company doesn’t properly train its workforce to achieve that goal.

support Schmersal’s sales partners in the ASEAN region and supply the markets in Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines and South Korea with machine safety products and innovative system solutions. In addition,

certified functional safety engineers from tec.nicum are also working on the new site. tec.nicum is a business division of Schmersal, which offers a comprehensive range of safety services. The customers of Schmersal Thailand Co. Ltd. include

companies from the food and beverage industry, pharmacy, personal care industry, robotics and automation technology, steel and automotive industry. “With the new company in Thailand, we will meet even better the strong growth and we are now able to respond even more flexibly to the rapidly developing Southeast Asian markets,” says Prasad Kulkarni. “Our customers benefit from shorter delivery times and better service.”

WARRIOR Safety Shoe : Enhancing the shoe life The material that is responsible for the service life of the majority of our shoes is the polyurethane in the midsole and outsole. Polyurethane (PU) is frequently used in safety shoes as it offers several positive properties. • Very light • Very flexible • Very good shock-absorbing properties • Highly abrasion-resistant • Good anti-slip properties All of this has a very beneficial effect on the user’s natural movement patterns and when it comes to the product life of the sole as regards mechanical influences.

24

The specific composition of PU produces these material qualities, but it also affects the service life of the material. Above all, the PU sole material is subject to a natural ageing process – hydrolysis.

What happens when soles age? PU consists of long polymer chains that are gradually split apart due to the effect of moisture. As a consequence, PU loses flexibility over time and gradually becomes brittle. As the shoes reach an advanced age, this can lead to signs of disintegration in the soles.

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | NOVEMBER 2019

But why can storing shoes often be more detrimental to their useful life than if they are worn? Work shoes are often stored in the basement, shed or garage – places where poor sunlight & higher levels of moisture are normally present. And it is precisely this moisture that amplifies the hydrolysis process and causes the shoes to age even more quickly, even though they are not actually being worn.

we want to benefit from all the positive properties of a safety shoe, we need to be aware of the limited product life of shoes. We recommend adoption of First In First Out during storing & distribution, regular use by user. Due to long storage, the shoe sole gets weak & loses it’s properties & does not last long. Further information can be found in the Maintenance Tips leaflet that comes with every Warrior Safety Shoe.

Our recommendation for you and your safety shoes Ageing of safety shoes is an entirely normal process that all shoes go through. If

Schmersal launches first ex-proof RFID safety sensor EX-RSS16 can be used in gas zone 2 & dust zone 22 At Motek 2019, the Schmersal Group is showcasing the first RFID-based safety sensor which has been designed in accordance with ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU and can be used in EX zones 2 (gas EX, category 3G) and 22 (dust EX, category 3D). This means that the EX-RSS16 combines two important properties for system safety: functional safety in accordance with ISO 13849 and explosion protection. At the same time, the sensor features ignition protection classes Ex ec and Ex tc, covering the explosion protection function without requiring another energy-limiting device. Schmersal launched this new development this year. The wear-free safety sensor is perfect for position monitoring of various kinds of safety equipment, including the monitoring of doors, position monitoring of machine axles or other rotating, lateral shifting or removable safety equipment. Three different actuation directions also allow a flexible choice of installation position. The EX-RSS16 is available with or without latching. For example, the variant with a magnetic latching ensures that a door is held closed even when there is no voltage. Because of the built-in

RFID technology, the EXRSS16 enables individually coded variants with a coding level of high in accordance with ISO 14119, thus offering excellent tamper protection. The EX-RSS16 safety sensors have an optional diagnostic output or SD interface (Serial Diagnostics). Up to 31 safety switchgear devices with serial diagnostics can be connected in series. This means that the diagnostics data from the individual devices connected in series can be transferred via the SD gateway and a fieldbus (e.g. PROFIBUS) to a controller, e.g. status data or error messages. This means problems can be resolved more quickly. Advanced diagnostics data supports predictive maintenance and helps prevent machine downtime. Control

Health and wellbeing leadership: Highlighting the rise of presenteeism at OSH India

Mike Robinson, Chief Executive, British Safety Council

32

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | NOVEMBER 2019

In a bid to raise awareness about growing trend of employees going to work despite being ill, British Safety Council is participating in OSH India being held in Mumbai on 28 and 29th November, 2019. Globally, 73% of millennials work over forty hours a week and in India millennials work 52 hours a week on average. Despite these alarming statistics, only a minority of organizations are taking steps to address these unhealthy workplace practices. This is related to the complex nature of health and wellbeing and difficulty of managing them in the workplace environment. To highlight this, Mike Robinson, Chief Executive, British Safety Council will discuss the symptoms and drivers of presenteeism and their impact on the individual’s and company’s performance, as well as the wider economy. He will also share a health and wellbeing strategy that effectively addresses presenteeism in the workplace and argue that senior management has a key role to play in leading the implementation of the strategy in the organization.

plastic-metal components and can be integrated into series production lines. The Schmersal Group is now using this innovative Plasma-SealTight® technology process for the first time in a pilot project to produce its AZM300 solenoid lock. Used on safety doors, this interlock features a metal bracket integrated into a plastic actuator. The bracket engages with an interlock

cross-head to ensure that safety doors are securely closed. to identify the actuator reliably, thus providing three different code levels and, consequently, protection against manipulation. After the new process has proven its worth in the pilot project, Schmersal intends to use it in both new and existing products, thus producing them even more efficiently.

About the Schmersal Group

The Plasma-SealTight® plasma seal process developed by Plasmatreat and AKRO-PLASTIC offers a completely new approach to providing a highly bonding, media-resistant hybrid joint. In this new industrial solution, the plastic compound formula, the process parameters, and the composition of a plasma-polymer seal layer created under atmospheric pressure were matched to one another in such a way that they would create a durable, media-tight bond in the component. The advantage of the new process is that it not only achieves better product quality, but also a reliable, reproducible, cost-efficient production process with the added bonus of respecting the environment. Thanks to the PlasmaSealTight® technology, there is no need to apply cost-intensive, environmentally harmful chemicals to metal surfaces. Such chemicals are often used to create a firm bond with the help of solventbased adhesion promoters. The AZM 300 is an innovative safety interlock which is now used in many sectors of industry. AZM 300’s outstanding features include a new patented operating principle with a hub and cross-head. It brings the advantage that the safety door is pulled into its end position when closed and is securely locked free of almost any clearance. The solenoid interlock operates as an integrated guard catch, hence removing the need to fit a separate catch. An RFID sensor is used

Keep Hazards at Bay & Make Welding a Pleasure by S.K. Palit

S

afety is a critical consideration for any welding project. Arc welding is a safe occupation when proper precautions are taken. But, if safety measures are ignored, welders can face an array of hazards which can be potentially dangerous, including electric shock, fumes and gases, fire and explosions and more. In order to help keep welders safe, organizations such as the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) offer safety guidelines to help control, minimize or to help employers and workers avoid welding hazards. Employers should ensure that all workers comply with the following important guidelines in the workplace: • Read and understand manufacturer instructions for equipment • Carefully review material safety data sheets • Follow the company’s internal safety practices Awareness of the most common welding hazards and knowing how to avoid them ensures a safe, productive work environment for all.

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | NOVEMBER 2019

Electric Shock Electric shock is one of the most serious and immediate risks facing a welder. Electric shock can lead to severe injury or death, either from the shock itself or from a fall caused by the reaction to a shock. Electric shock occurs when welders touch two metal objects that have a voltage between them, thereby inserting themselves into the electrical circuit. For instance, if a worker holds a bare wire in one hand and a second bare wire with another, electric current will pass through that wire and through the welding operator, causing an electric shock. The higher the voltage, the higher the current and, thus the higher the risk for the electric shock to result in injury or death. The most common type of electric shock is secondary voltage shock from an arc welding circuit, which ranges from 20 to 100 volts. Bear in mind that even a shock of 50 volts or less can be enough to injure or kill an operator, depending on the conditions. Due to its constant change in polarity, alternating current (AC) voltage is more likely to stop the heart than direct current (DC) welders. It is also more likely to make the person holding the wire

unable to let go. To avoid secondary voltage shock, welding operators should wear dry gloves in good condition, never touch the electrode or metal parts of the electrode holder with skin or wet clothing and be sure to insulate themselves from the work and ground, keeping dry insulation between their body and the metal being welded or ground (such as a metal floor or wet surface). ADOR Welding Limited (AWL) offers a wide range of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), like Welding Gloves, Safety Shoes and other safety products to ensure welders’ safety. In addition, AWL offers VRD (Voltage Reducing Device) as a built-in feature as an option, and also VRD Units which can be fitted externally to any AC or DC SMAW Welding machine, which keeps the secondary voltage down to a safe level of 18-20 V when no welding is being done (machine switched on, but in idle condition). Full welding power is automatically enabled whenever the welder strikes the welding arc. An even more serious shock, primary voltage shock, may occur when a welder touches electrically “hot” or “live” parts in-

side the welder case or the electric distribution system to which the welder is connected. This action can lead to a shock of 230 or 415 volts. AWL offers ELCB as an option in their welding machines to completely eliminate this hazard.

AWL has introduced in their range different models of Welding Fume Extraction Systems, both stand-alone as well as centralized systems (KING EXTRACTORS), with advanced technology, special filters and with or without built-in compressors

Fumes and Gases

Fire and Explosions

Overexposure to welding fumes and gases can be hazardous to the health of the welder as well as any other person who is working in the vicinity of the welding area. Welding fume contains potentially harmful complex metal oxide compounds from consumables, base metal and the base-metal coatings, so it is important to keep the head out of the fumes and use enough ventilation and/or exhaust to control the exposure to substances in the fume, depending on the type of rod and base metal being used. The specific potential health effects which relate to the welding consumable being used can be found in the Health Hazard Data section of the Safety Data Sheet available from the consumable manufacturer. Welding areas require adequate ventilation and local exhaust to keep fumes and gases away from the breathing zone and the general area. In most situations, a ventilation system- such as a fan, and an exhaust system or fixed or removable exhaust hoods- to remove fumes and gases from the work area are provided.

Welding arc creates extreme temperatures, and may pose a significant fire and explosions hazard if safe practices are not followed. While the welding arc may reach temperatures of 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit, the real danger is not from the arc itself, but rather the intense near the arc & the heat, sparks and spatter created by the arc. This spatter can reach up to 35 feet away from the welding space. To prevent fires, before beginning to weld, inspect the work area for any flammable materials and remove them from the area. Flammable materials comprise of three categories: liquid, such as gasoline, oil and paint; solid, such as wood, cardboard and paper; gas, including acetylene, propane and hydrogen.

Ergonomics When welding heavy material manually and during assembly welding the loads are very static. Positioning welding also gives high loads. Ergonomic control of Welder’s position, arrangement of rotating tables (rotators and turn tables) is important to reduce welder fatigue and chances

of poor weld quality.

Other Safety Considerations Welders should also be aware of other safety considerations within the work environment. For example, those working in a confined space or in an elevated area may need to take extra precautions. In any welding situation, welding operators should pay close attention to safety information on the products being used and the material safety data sheets provided by the manufacturer and work with their employer and co-workers to follow appropriate safe practices for their workplace. Good common sense is also key while opening cans of electrodes, keep hands away from sharp edges. Remove clutter and debris from the welding area to prevent tripping or falling. And never use broken or damaged equipment or PPE. To keep up with the most recent safety practices, welding operators should utilize resources from the American Welding Society (AWS), OSHA and welding manufacturers. By following these safe practices and using common sense, operators can stay safe and keep production moving with no lost-time accidents. Safety & Health Fact Sheets are provided in the ANSI Z49.1 Standards. [The author is Head-CCC & Strategic Support - Equipment, SGP & WAPS at Ador Welding Ltd.]

Monitor & control poisonous gases in underground parking area

Ambetronics Engineers Pvt. Ltd. is offering high quality and precise, gas detectors and gas monitors to monitor levels of Carbon Monoxide, Nitrogen Dioxide & CNG gas in a cost-effective manner

O

wing to the modernization and increased population, underground parking areas have become an integral part of massive arcades. However, these parking lots are home to poisonous gases like Carbon Monoxide (CO) and oxides of Nitrogen (NO/NO2). Such unchecked gases and improper ventilation system can cause a clogged up state which sometimes might turn out to be life damaging. So what is the existing solution??? – Ventilation Fans! Both underground as well as surface car parks are equipped with large exhaust fans which run continuously thereby ventilating the area from gaseous hazards. But continuous ventilation is costly as these large fans require much power. Ambetronics Engineers Pvt. Ltd. resolves this issue by offering high quality and precise, Gas Detectors and Gas Monitors to monitor levels of Carbon Monoxide (CO), Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) & CNG gas. These are configured with the exhaust fans so that whenever the gas concentration goes beyond the safe

limit, the parking basements could be ventilated. Ambetronics Gas Detectors are capable of detecting the gas concentration in the following range having a resolution of 1 for CO gas and 0.01 for NO2 gas: • Carbon Monoxide (CO): 0–1000 PPM OR 0–500 PPM • Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2): 0–20 PPM Location of the Detector: The distance between the gas detector and the potential sources of gas is important. To have an optimum and precise detection, the air polluted with the hazardous gases have to be in physical contact with the gas sensors. Hence, Ambetronics Gas Detectors are fitted at a distance of 3 feet to 5 feet from the ground surface. Our gas detector can provide up to 75 sq. m. area coverage based on a 5-meter radius of operation. Arc Flash Protection: Understanding the best option

W

hen it comes to arc flash protection, multiple factors must be considered when creating, implementing, and maintaining a workplace electrical safety personal protective equipment (PPE) program. While utilizing the hierarchy of risk controls, such as lock-out/tag-out procedures, to put equipment in an electrically safe work condition, those working on energized electrical equipment should always wear arc rated (AR)/flame resistant (FR) personal protective equipment (PPE) on a job site to help mitigate injuries should an arc flash occur. AR/FR PPE includes, but is not limited to, head gear, clothing, gloves, and footwear. If an employee is not equipped with the proper PPE required for the task at hand, he or she could be at risk of serious or fatal burn injuries due to an unexpected arc flash. Arc flashes are dangerous and unexpected, but a well-designed electrical safety PPE program can help mitigate injuries in the event of an arc flash. With a surplus of information available, it can be difficult to determine what is important to incorporate into a thorough PPE program and what is not. Safety managers should be aware of these five caveats when designing and implementing an electrical PPE program that will be most effective in helping to protect employees on a day-to-day basis. 1. The company is responsible for developing and implementing an electrical safety PPE program. When it comes to employee electrical safety, the company is responsible for ensuring that a thorough and effective PPE program is in place to help protect workers from jobsite electrical hazards. An employer is financially accountable for injuries its

56

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | NOVEMBER 2019

employees sustain from an arc flash incident. The associated costs of arc flash injuries can compound quickly, especially if an AR/FR PPE program is not in place. The upfront costs of implementing an AR/FR program may seem daunting; however, the absence of an appropriate program can add up. Not investing in an AR/FR daily wear program can end up costing a company much more for an employee’s medical bills than the initial costs of implementing adequate PPE safety measures. Moreover, it places employees’ safety first. 2. Employees must be properly trained and informed about AR/FR PPE. In addition to implementing a PPE program, it is important for employees to receive thorough training on the importance, proper use, and care of their AR/FR daily wear and task-based PPE. It is the company’s responsibility to educate their employees to ensure they understand the implications of wearing daily wear and task-based AR/FR PPE incorrectly. PPE, including AR/FR clothing, gloves, shoes, and head and face protection are all crucial components to keeping electrical workers safe. Wearing them correctly is vital to helping mitigate injuries if an arc flash takes

place. As such, educating employees on the proper fit and how to wear their AR/FR PPE helps to ensure they understand how to thoroughly protect themselves against hazards. Additionally, the company must monitor PPE use to ensure its employees are diligently donning their AR/FR PPE and wearing it correctly. If an employee’s AR/FR PPE is not being worn properly, the company must address the issue and work with the employee with additional training or other incentives or consequences to ensure he or she is wearing the AR/FR PPE correctly while employed by the company. Care for AR/FR garments is another important safety measure that must be communicated to employees. All AR/FR garments come with care tags, which provide the wearer with instructions on how to wash and maintain the garments. It is important to follow these instructions, as not doing so could compromise the AR/FR properties of the garment. 3. The company must stay familiar with updated NFPA 70E consensus standards. NFPA 70E publishes updates every three years, and it is the safety manager’s job to know when new information becomes available and to review

www.isrmag.com

TECH TRENDS

FIRE INDUSTRY

it thoroughly. Once revised information is published, safety managers should re-examine their electrical PPE programs to account for the relevant changes in the updated industry standard. With each update to NFPA 70E, there may be important and valuable information, which will help ensure employee safety and help mitigate potential workplace injuries. Updates may seem confusing and overwhelming; however, the new standards are vital to building compliant PPE programs and ensuring proper jobsite precautions are taken. 4. Human error must be considered in risk assessments and affects PPE best practices. The 2018 revision to NFPA 70E now includes taking the potential for human error into account when conducting a risk assessment and will likely affect your current PPE program. This addition helps to provide a more comprehensive method of protecting employees by identifying human weakness and implementing measures to further ensure employee safety. Human error precursors that may be present can now be considered and countered in risk assessments and are grouped into four categories: task demands, work environment, individual capabilities, and human nature. They include numerous, familiar error precursors such as time pressure, distractions, lack of knowledge, and complacency. Informative Annex Q of NFPA 70E identifies human performance modes that employees work in as well as human performance tools used to counter the error precursors listed above. While Annex Q of the 2018 edition of 70E is not required for compliance to the 70E standard, it has excellent information regarding human performance and workplace electrical safety. Daily wear AR/FR programs are now a PPE best practice over low energy (PPE CAT 2), task-based PPE programs and help address and minimize the risk of injury due to human error when arc flash hazards are present. If an employee is required to wear daily AR/FR gar-

58

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | NOVEMBER 2019

ments, he or she will be better protected against unexpected arc flash hazards because he or she will have the daily wear on, which is not always the case with low energy, task-based AR/FR PPE coveralls. A daily wear program reduces the risk of an employee forgetting to put on PPE when performing an energized task. It also eliminates common excuses for not donning appropriate AR/FR body PPE such as lack of time, lack of knowledge, discomfort, and complacency. Therefore, wearing daily wear for the entirety of the work day can help provide better overall protection. With today’s FR technologies, daily wear AR/ FR garments are more comfortable, breathable, and almost indistinguishable from street clothing. Having AR/FR garments that employees are comfortable in helps ensure they will wear the garments & remain better protected against workplace hazards. 5. Adding arc ratings of two garments do not necessarily add up to achieve a combined rating. Proper hazard assessments identify the arc rating required to help mitigate injury in the event of an arc flash. Layering AR/FR clothing can be useful in achieving the desired level of protection; however, two arc ratings on separate garments do not necessarily “add up” to make a combined rating of the two. For example, a 4 cal/cm2 shirt paired with an 8 cal/cm2 jacket do not necessarily create a 12 cal/cm2 system. According to NFPA 70E requirements, a layered system must be tested via

ASTM F-1959 in a qualified lab to determine if the layers produce the required level of AR/FR protection (PPE CAT) or arc rating for your workplace. Reputable fabric and garment manufacturers will be able to provide layered arc rating data and may be able to test your preferred layered garment system to determine the accurate combined arc rating. Additionally, if an employee is working in an environment where arc flash hazards may be present, his or her outermost layer must be an AR/FR garment even if his or her other clothing is sufficiently rated to protect against thermal hazards. If the outermost layer is not an AR/FR fabric, the garment can ignite and continue to burn after the arc flash is over and may result in severe burn injuries. Daily wear AR/FR garments are a simple and effective way to help mitigate the risk of burn injuries from arc flash incidents, but it is important to note that AR/FR PPE should be the last line of defense, the last risk control for thermal hazard protection. Utilizing the risk controls in the hierarchy and addressing how human error can affect the various risk controls should be the key priorities when working on a project. AR/FR daily wear PPE should be worn the entire work day as a precaution against arc flashes and should not be seen as an uncomfortable suit of armor. Appropriate safety protocols should always be taken to help prevent hazardous events.

How Forward Securities is effectively securing valuable building site materials For security installation firm Forward Securities, using Hikvision’s new range of Turbo HD PIRequipped cameras has had a dramatic impact on addressing a key business challenge. The firm is now able to ensure effective monitoring and security of construction sites and other valuable locations during vulnerable out of hours periods Submitted by Prama Hikvision India

P

aul Hookings, Managing Director of Hampshire-based security installation firm Forward Securities, had a problem. His company had built a solid reputation for, amongst a variety of other services, securing building sites, notably the important materials and equipment left overnight and unattended in the site compound. Building site compounds, Hookings explains, can include any number of super-valuable and enticing materials for potential thieves. “Diesel, copper, tools, cabling, right down to bricks, breeze blocks, agricultural fuel, road diesel, even the metal gates,” he says. “Thousands and thousands of pounds worth of stuff is stored there overnight.” To monitor these compounds for intruders, Forward Securities would use traditional PIRs – passive infrared detectors – to raise an alert when the compound perimeter was breached.

82

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | NOVEMBER 2019

The problem had to do with the PIRs, Hookings explains. “On critical sites like these, where there’s a lot of activity during working hours, people are able to move those PIRs in the daytime when they’re off,” he says. “And come night-time, they’re then able to return and rob the place without being picked up by the detectors, and then move the PIR back to where it was previously. Then it’s down to the security company, who end up scratching their heads, thinking: why didn’t that go off?” As a result, Hookings was on the lookout for a solution, something which would counter that potential for tampering and provide a more effective deterrent to potential thieves. Then he noticed that Hikvision had released a new range of Turbo HD PIR cameras. “These are lovely little products,” he says. “With a PIR camera, during

the armed period, if someone moves into its field of view, there’s an alarm. If someone covers it up, it goes into alarm. If someone moves it into another direction, it goes into alarm. So I’ve binned the products we were using previously and now I exclusively use Hikvision.” The Turbo HD PIR camera range uses advanced video surveillance technologies to improve alarm accuracy and prevent intrusions. Video verification of alarms means a rapid response from a manned guarding service can be achieved. The camera’s built-in PIR detector captures infrared light given off by human bodies and distinguishes it from other visual “noise.” It can be “double knocked” with Hikvision’s Turbo HD K series DVR’s motion detection to reduce false alarms caused by moving targets without human body

www.isrmag.com

CASE STUDY

SECURITY INDUSTRY

IR emission. This way, filtering false alarms reduces storage space and costs, and it also means more efficient post-event footage search. The camera also produces a flashing white strobe light that serves as a warning signal to stop intruders. And the white light serves as supplemental lighting, enabling the camera to capture clear images of suspects as evidence when the alarm is triggered, even in extremely dark environments – such as the construction site compounds. “When we have an alarm triggered on one of our sites, we basically get a guaranteed guarding response,” Hookings says. “Because the combination of PIR detection and video serves as proof that the assailants are there. It’s a confirmed signal going to the monitoring station, and as a result we always get people apprehended.” The model Forward Securities prefers to use is the DS-2CE12H0T-PIRL, a 5MP bullet PIR bullet camera referred to as the ‘PIRL’. They offer 2560 x 1944 pixel resolution, smart infrared illumination up to 20m, and Hikvision’s

www.isrmag.com

own ‘up the coax’ technology, which allows cameras to be controlled over a coaxial cable from the DVR and also to transmit the alarm signal to DVR. They’re also IP67-rated for external use, so they’re tough and suitable for the sorts of environments, like construction sites, where they’re most needed. As an example of how he uses the Hikvision PIRL cameras, Hookings points to the example of one specific construction site currently being protected by Forward Securities. “We’re securing the main compound, along with any remote sites,” he says. “We use six PIRL cameras, as well as additional 4K Hikvision cameras running analytics and thermal cameras, and they all sit on the same server, recording to a Hikvision Hybrid DVR, with alarms and images sent to our monitoring station.” Other site setups can include an audio warning system, particularly for very high value equipment. “That’s another place we’d use a PIRL,” Hookings says. “If someone, out of hours, walks up or even climbs the fence of the compound, the monitoring

station is alerted to that by the PIRL camera, and they can immediately broadcast an audio warning, real time and live. That’s transmitted through the Hikvision DVR, to an amplifier and speakers. “If the intruders persist despite the warning, we then get a guarding response. It’s not just big construction sites where the Turbo HD PIR cameras are effective, I do use them on other high value projects as well.” Ultimately, the Turbo HD PIRL cameras are incredibly effective, Hookings says. “They pick up suspicious activity, including thefts and attempted thefts, three to four times a week across all of our sites. That means they’re actively helping to prevent the thefts of materials worth hundreds of thousands, sometimes millions of pounds.”
