arandikar Laboratories Pvt. Ltd. (KLPL) – an IECEx & NABL recognized Test Laboratory for Electrical products used in potentially hazardous areas partnered with TISS as the Vertical Anchor for the Industrial Safety vertical of TISS – School of Vocational Education (SVE) to launch short term courses on Personnel Competency in Hazardous Areas for Industrial Safety. TISS-SVE & Karandikar Laboratories has launched the course to deal with human errors that cause accidents in explosive atmospheres.

Interaction with numerous safety professionals in the industry has revealed that the understanding of the requirements of the explosive area standards which govern the design and application of products used in hazardous areas is quite limited and certainly does not cover aspects like classification of hazardous areas, selection of suitable equipment, its installation and maintenance. accidents & investigations into such incidents have concluded that one of the factors responsible for the disasters is ‘Lack of adequate skills / training to the personnel working in these areas’. Hence TISS had launched ‘School of Vocational Education’ in 2014 to create a unique model to spread skill development to every nook & corner of the country.

Recent accidents due to lack of adequate knowledge of explosive environment include 27th June 2014: 15 killed in blast at GAIL pipeline in Andhra Pradesh, 16th June 2014: 5 killed in gas explosion in Oil refinery, 13th June 2014: 7 killed in Ukraine mine blast and 12th June 2014: 12 killed in gas explosion in Bhilai Steel plant.

Supporting the initiative, Shri.

P.C.Shrivastava, Chief Controller of Explosives (PESO) said, “Competent workforce is required in every field.

Karandikar Labs have strict norms for safety provisions and we are happy that they took this opportunity with TISS to launch the courses for securing the people working in explosive atmosphere.” TISS-SVE & KLPL have structured a multi-unit course program in line with the international IECEx Personnel Competency Scheme which offers plant owners and operators the confidence that their staff or contractors, who are required to perform duties such as hazardous area classification, selection and installation,

inspection and maintenance or repair and overhaul of Ex equipment together with the design of the plant, are fully skilled, capable and competent in the selected discipline.

Shri Anup Biswas, Deputy Director General DGMS said, “Our line of work, mining, deals with working in explosive atmospheres due to methane and coal dust. We hope such training will be introduced in the mining industry also.” While introducing the course specifics, Ravi Paranjpe, Director Operations, KLPL explained that it is important that people at all levels understand that electrical equipment installed in hazardous areas are designed differently and should be handled in a manner that does not compromise the safety protection which eliminates any chances of explosions. He highlighted that a flameproof ‘Exd’ or an ‘Exi’ or an ‘Exm’ equipment are separate entities and operating them requires knowledge and skilful competence. www.ind-safety.com

We are equipped with a staff strength of 450+ that continues to increase as we expand our business. Out of this 150+ are engineers some of whom are trained overseas. Our strategy is not to appoint dealers for marketing and selling our products. All our contacts with the clients are done directly by our staff themselves. We believe that a dealer will never be able to service a client with the same passion as we do.

In this industry the model of appointing dealers to service a client is an absolutely unsuccessful one which ultimately results in the client being unhappy.

Recently we had participated in R+T Exhibition, Germany. R+T is the undisputed number 1 trade fair - the leading world trade fair for rolling shutters, doors/gates and sun protection systems. Industry veterans from diverse background visited our stall and we had an opportunity to exchange ideas and we are glad that they were impressed with kind of product portfolio we have and they were in awe of our technical expertise. Many have expressed their desire to partner with us. In next few weeks we will be scrutinizing proposals from different companies and we will be meeting lot of them again to discuss the possibility of export in respective countries.

With increased globalization and countries opening up for business we see a great opportunity in neighboring countries also. For instance in Myanmar, last few years foreign investments has increased from few million to several billions dollars (300 million dollar 2009 to 5 billion 2014). The Myanmar government has relaxed import restrictions and abolished export taxes. Such policies boost our confidence and we will venture in such countries.

“Our current target for export is Gulf Countries and European Countries. In coming years we will be aiming neighboring countries like Bangladesh, Indonesia, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and few African countries. I have visited few of these countries and we have better products to offer them, than the ones they are currently using. By 2018 years we are targeting 50% revenue from export.”

Johnson Controls & Hitachi sign definitive agreement to form global HVAC joint venture New partnership expands already unmatched air conditioning products and technology portfolio

ohnson Controls, Hitachi, Ltd. and Hitachi Appliances, Inc. entered into a definitive agreement for their global joint venture while at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The new Johnson Controls-Hitachi joint venture will allow both companies to deliver the most diverse technology portfolio in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration industry.

Through the agreement, Johnson Controls will obtain a 60 percent ownership stake in Hitachi Appliances’ more than ¥300 billion sales (approximately $2.6 billion) global air conditioning business, excluding sales and service operations in Japan. The Johnson Controls-Hitachi joint venture will bring customers a full range of air conditioning products, including world-class variable refrigerant flow (VRF) technology, leading-edge inverter technology based room air conditioners and absorption chillers – on top of existing Johnson Controls products that meet global customer demands.

With approximately 13,800 employees and 24 manufacturing plants, the joint venture will build on both organizations’ technology, research and development leadership, as well as their expanding marketing channels. The transaction is expected to close later this year, subject to regulatory approvals and satisfaction of other customary conditions.

Security industry is growing at a rapid pace. And the industry sees new products and new technologies coming by each day. With the developments happening in and around us, requirement of security products is strengthening rapidly. From being a “push market”, it’s now switched to a “pull market.”

Customers are gradually aware of the offerings. Requirements have shifted from standalone solutions to converged and integrated solutions. Focus has shifted from the features available in the products to its applicability in different scenarios as per customer requirement.

Q. Which market are you targeting?

We have been working in almost all segments from large enterprise to retail customers. However with the passage of time we see very good opening and value in SME. For this SME segment over and above products they require a solution to be designed. Many customers would not be aware of the exact requirements and so our role doubles up as an advisor/consultant and then as animplementation team. So our value added services initially begin withbuilding up and deciding the customer requirements, explaining the applications of products & solutions and its usability in various scenarios and then ultimately commissioning the project as per the solution designed. Q. What is your support strategy?

We have a very good support infrastructure in place with a great leader and a technical skilled team.

With efficient use of CRM and processes we try to ensure minimum hassles for our client. Lately, we have come up with a remote support team which has helped us to ensure swift resolution of complains and has brought down the average completion time of complains. When the customer readily gets to speak to an engineer most of the problems are solved there and then. With timely preventive maintenance visits we can ensure timely checks to prevent problems & resolve customer queries, this wins a lot of customer confidence.

Q. What are the challenges that you are currently facing in India?

Plethora of CCTV Surveillance companies and cheap Chinese manufactured goods which are low on quality and low on prices have spoilt the market and hampered the margins. It’s difficult for a customer to understand the difference by just seeing the hardware. In some cases customer regrets the decision after purchasing due to lack of prompt service received for solving issues in the product. I think company like Matrix has gained reputation for having able to deliver technically advanced products with great stability and prompt support which has gained it quite a distinction in the market.

Q. What kind of plans & expectations do you have for this segment this year?

In the coming year we expect a minimum 35% YOY growth. We are in the process of scaling up our team and resources to match up our projections & achieve it. www.ind-safety.com

Union Budget 2015-16

T

he NDA Government announced its first full-fledged Union Budget on 28th February, 2015. At last, the plea of the Electronics Industry, also forwarded

by SPGI, has made an impact on the policy makers. The Finance Minister, recognizing the damage that inverted duties have caused to manufacturing in the country, reduced customs duty on a number of inputs which are detailed later in this document.

The Finance Minister has also looked at the Excise duty structure applicable to certain items and carried out rationalization to provide boost to devices like LED drivers, Mobile Handsets, Tablets, Computers, IC Wafers, and some specified raw materials among others. The inclusion of these items will pave way for other products including Electronic Security Products in coming days.

SPGI sincerely believes that a good beginning has been made to realize the full potential of Electronics hardware in restricting huge foreign exchange outflows and creation of substantial number of jobs.

However, the Finance Minister has not been able to meet the expectations with respect to relief to Tax www.ind-safety.com

Payers - both Corporates and Individuals. The Budget includes a proposal to reduce Corporate Tax from 30% to 25% over the next four years beginning from next financial year but this will be accompanied with withdrawal of exemptions. The Finance Minister has declared that the Government is committed to a stable taxation policy and a non-adversarial tax administration.

Hopefully this will encourage fresh investments.

The ‘Make-in-India’ Mission launched by the Prime Minister will lead not only to revival of growth and investment but also to promotion of domestic manufacturing and enormous job creation. As a step to encourage and enthuse Make-in-India’, the Finance Minister has reduced the rate of Income Tax on Royalty and fee for the technical services from 25% to 10% which will facilitate technology inflow.

GST which has been a source of dispute between the Centre and State Governments for the last 4-5 years will see the light of the day. Efforts on various fronts to implement this reform measure of considerable importance may be implemented next year.

The Finance Minister while presenting the Budget, laid stress on

rationalization and removal of various tax exemptions and incentives in order to reduce tax disputes and improve administration. He however, clarified that exemptions to individual tax payers would continue to encourage savings. Fight against the scourge of black money will be taken forward. • Additional deduction of `25000 allowed for differently abled persons.

• Limit on deduction on account of contribution to a pension fund and the new pension scheme increased from ` 1 lakh to `1.5 lakh.

• Additional deduction of ` 50000 for contribution to the new pension scheme u/s 80CCD. • Negative List under service-tax is being slightly pruned to widen the tax base.

• To mitigate the problem being faced by many genuine charitable institutions, it is proposed to modify the ceiling on receipts from activities in the nature of trade, commerce or business to 20% of the total receipts from the existing ceiling of ` 25 lakh.

• Most provisions of Direct Taxes Code have already been included in the Income-tax Act, the refore, no great merit in going ahead with the Direct Taxes Code as it exists today.

• Direct tax proposals to result in revenue loss of ` 8,315 crore, whereas the proposals in indirect taxes are expected to yield ` 23,383 crore.

Thus, the net impact of all tax proposals would be revenue gain of `15,068 crore.

ntrusion Detection systems are designed to detect unauthorized entry into a building or area. Such systems are deployed in residential, commercial, industrial, and military properties for protection against burglary (theft) or property damage, as well as for personal protection against intruders. Prisons also use security systems for control of inmates.

Some alarm systems serve a single purpose of burglary protection.

Other systems provide both fire and intrusion protection. Intrusion alarm systems may also be combined with video television surveillance systems to automatically record the activities of intruders, and may interface to access control systems for electrically locked doors. Systems range from small, self-contained noisemakers, to complicated, multi-area systems with computer monitoring and control.

System Components The most basic system consists of one

or more sensors to detect intrusion and a ‘siren’ to announce the intrusion. The typical components of a premise security alarm system would be as follows: • Alarm Control Panel • Sensors • Alerting devices • Keypads • Communication or Interconnection • Other security devices.

The Alarm Control Panel is the “brain” of the system. It reads sensor inputs, tracks arm/disarm status, and signals intrusions. This typically comprises of one or more circuit boards and power supply housed inside a metal enclosure.

Sensors detect the intrusion.

Sensors may be placed either at the perimeter of the protected area, or within the protected area or a combination of both. Sensors detect intruders by a variety of methods, such as

monitoring doors and windows for opening, or by monitoring unoccupied interiors for motion, sound, vibration, or other disturbances.

(Next month we will discuss the various types of detectors that are deployed in a typical system).

Alerting devices indicate an alarm condition. Bells, sirens, and/or flashing lights are the most common devices. Alerting devices serve the dual purposes of warning occupants of intrusion, and potentially scaring off burglars. These devices may also be used to warn occupants of a fire or smoke condition.

Keypads are small devices, typically wall-mounted, which function as the

human-machine interface to the system.

Interconnection between components may be achieved by wiring to the control unit, or over wireless links.

Other Security devices: Devices to detect thieves such as spotlights, cameras & lasers.

Wired and Wireless systems The signal from the sensor is transmitted to the control unit either through wires or wirelessly (radio, line carrier, infrared). Wired systems are convenient when sensors (such as PIRs, smoke detectors, etc.) require power to operate correctly. Entry-level wired

systems utilize a ‘star‘ network topology, where the panel is at the centre and all devices are wired back to the panel. More complex panels use a ‘bus network topology’ where the wire basically is a data loop around the perimeter of the facility. Wired systems also have the advantage, if wired properly, of being tamper-proof.

Wireless systems, often use battery-powered transmitters which are easier to install and have less expensive start-up costs, but may reduce the reliability of the system if the batteries are not maintained. Depending on distance and construction materials, one or more wireless repeaters may be required to reliably transport the signal to the alarm panel. A wireless system can be easily deployed. Wireless monitoring of the alarm system protects against a burglar cutting a cable. Hybrid systems use both wired and wireless sensors to achieve the benefits of both.

Integration with other surveillance and monitoring systems Intrusion detection systems are often integrated with video surveillance systems. Intrusion at the perimeter, once detected, could be used to trigger a security camera to zoom in on the Zone where the intrusion has been detected. This would capture the image of the person(s) breaking into the premises. Similarly, a glass break could trigger a camera in the room to start recording the incident for later use by the police.

In addition to the system itself, security alarms are often coupled with a monitoring service. In the event of an alarm, the premise control unit auto-dials a central monitoring station. Operators at this station are alerted by the signal and can take appropriate action - contacting the property owners, notifying police, or dispatching private security forces.

As a result of this spotlight on safety issues at large-scale and widespread events like a marathon, a comprehensive plan is put in place to keep the race runners and spectators secure. This year, the New York Road Runners (NYRR), the running club that organizes the annual race, and their medical team chose New York City-based networked technology and systems integrator Virsig, LLC, to spearhead and execute their security plans and to provide technological assistance and direction to increase safety.

Sony was chosen by Virsig to be the IP camera of choice to securely monitor the world’s largest marathon, along with support from several other global technology partners, including Firetide, Inc.—a Division of UNICOM Global; Milestone Systems; and Network Video Technologies. Sony’s cameras were required to perform multiple functions ranging from situational awareness at all entrances and exits, to threat assessment,

and personnel management. More than 50 Sony security cameras were installed along the route, including the SNC-HM662, SNC-XM632, SNCWR632C, SNC-CH260 and SNC-CH280 models, which include fixed cameras with on-board video analytics, dome, bullet, 360- degree, and pan-tilt-zoom style cameras.

“To help ensure the safety of the biggest marathon in the world is no small task. Sony is pleased that we were able to be an integral part of the security process for the second year in a row,” said Phil Coppola, Northeast Security Manager, Sony Electronics’ Security Systems Division. “Virsig worked day and night to get their system up and running, and they had to contend with some terrible weather leading up to the race. With their experience in wireless transmission and video surveillance system design and installation, Virsig allowed the Sony cameras to operate to their fullest potential and play a pivotal role in helping to secure the marathon participants and spectators.”

Although the marathon takes place during the day, the set-up occurs over the course of several preceding days, and Sony’s cameras needed to be able to perform reliably during daytime and nighttime hours. The Sony high-definition bullet cameras that were used come equipped with infrared illuminators that provided race coordinators with uninterrupted views, regardless of lighting conditions.

cameras, which were also installed at the 2013 New York City Marathon, were coordinated through Milestone Systems XProtect Corporate, a powerful IP video management software (VMS) designed for large-scale and high-security deployments.

Meanwhile, Sony’s new ultra-wide dynamic range IP surveillance cameras were placed throughout the last mile of the race in Central Park and around the finish line.

The innovative SNC-XM632 IPELA ENGINE camera was used in multiple locations for a broad overview of the areas around the entrance and exit points at the race. The camera has a 113-degree wide angle field-of-view and a hi-res, full HD imager, allowing for images that were far more detailed and expansive than anything used in the past.

Additionally, the marathon coordinators required a camera that would provide situational awareness to monitor the activities inside the emergency and medical tents. Because these were temporary structures, they were unable to take advantage of multiple camera views. For those areas, the SNC-HM662, a 5MP camera capable of providing 360-degree views from a single sensor, was selected. From this one camera, race organizers were able to know exactly what was going on in each tent at all times.

“We selected Sony for multiple reasons: first and foremost, because of the quality of the

picture, and secondly, because of the ease of installation,” said Glenn Taylor, Executive Director, Virsig. “We have a very short window to get the equipment up and running, and we don’t have a lot of direct access to the cameras during the actual marathon.

This is particularly why we relied on the photo framing and auto focus that’s built into the electronics of the Sony camera.”

The weather leading up to the marathon was very challenging, including freezing cold temperatures and rain, so it was important for Virsig to use cameras that were durable, reliable, and self-sufficient. Sony’s security cameras automatically adjust to meet requirements in lighting and environment and hold up to the unpredictable demands of the weather. This ensures that race managers can deal with unforeseen circumstances and medical emergencies and can rest assured that the cameras will perform their functions without the attention of a team.

The casual observer may not have noticed Sony’s cameras or seen them on the front lines of the marathon, but according to all involved, it was a job well done. Runners were able to focus on their exhausting task while race organizers could concentrate on logistical issues and medical matters without worrying about the overall safety. Sony’s end goal of maintaining a secure and worry-free environment for the more than one million people involved in the world’s largest race was met, for the second year in a row.

cannot always see from the outside in which building the fire is present,” says Harald Lechertshuber. “With the FLIR K50, we can already see from the outside which places are hot and cold and have a perfect overview of the situation.” But also after a fire has been extinguished, a thermal imager can help assess the situation and allow firefighters to look for looming fire remains or for inadequately extinguished fires.

Skills of the Excellent OHS Professional We were originally going to call it the “Perfect Safety Professional” but decided that “perfect” wasn’t the right word as perfection could never be defined or achieved. If you were perfect then you wouldn’t be quite real as it is our imperfections that give us character. Perfect in one environment may be totally useless in another. If you don’t want to read any further because you think that you are already excellent, then guess what – you’re not! so you should read on, for the key to excellence is continual improvement: I do not generally refer to people who work in OHS as professionals, as being a professional implies application of a unique knowledge of subject. I do not believe that a defined, unique knowledge yet exists in the OS side of OHS in INDIA. In my entire service period as safety professional, I learned very little about OHS. None or marginal efforts are taken by Safety Professionals to find out what suits best to our customs and culture. Please do not pretend “I know everything” and say people are going to behave just like that Skills of the excellent OHS professional • Interpersonal skills – Techniques such as reflective listening and appropriate self-disclosure can make a real difference. If you cannot get on well with people your technical OHS skills will go to

In modern business shared leadership is of more relevance than individual leadership.

Get your priorities right – Recognize safety never has been and never will be the number one priority (you can say it all you want but is it – really?), safety must be fully integrated into other business functions with equal priority for all are interdependent and none can thrive without the other.

Humility – Be humble and recognize the knowledge and worth of the front line worker, they are the only ones who know how things really happen.

Broad thinking – Think outside the square and challenge the status-quo Legislation – Recognize that while compliance with legislation is important it is only a minimum standard Pareto Principle – Remember the Pareto Principle, the 80/20 rule, identify the 20% of things you do that give you 80% of your results and concentrate on them A commitment to a continuous improvement philosophy and ability to implement Quality Management.

4. Safety Professionals Soft Skills • Listening often is described as the most important sales communication skill. It makes sense: How else

would we know what the customer needs, wants and desires if we didn’t listen to the customer? You say you are not in sales. Wrong. We all are in sales. As HSE professionals, we are selling injury and illness prevention and environmental quality to our customers.

• Given the importance of listening, think about how much formal training you’ve had in listening: 2 weeks, 1 week, 1 day or maybe none for many of us. Yet listening is critical to our ability to influence change. Next, we must realize that listening is not a passive activity. Listening is actually a dialogue, not a monologue where the speaker speaks and the listener merely listens.

• Listening requires the use of our eyes, mouth, brain, body and, oh yes, our ears. We need our eyes so we can see the expression and body language, our mouth to acknowledge and clarify our brain to assimilate the message, our body to indicate we are open and understanding, and our ears to hear the words and how they are spoken. This simple model should be most helpful in growing our listening skills.

• Words, Dance, Music: Words account for a mere one-third, the tone or inflection of the words (i.e. the music) about another third & the body language (or dance that signals if the listener is open, closed, bored or attentive) the final third. For example, you are talking to someone and he keeps looking out the window or at his watch. What signal is he sending?

Most likely, this “dance” signals he really is not interested or he is in a hurry and wants you to cut your comments short. Keep this simple model in mind when listening.
