Use a gate or tees to hit through on the practice green to test your green reading skills

The third drill is to use a long metal ruler or putting sword and have your putts roll off the very end each time If your putts fall off either side, the ruler or sword will kick them farther off line making it easy to see where you are missing When practicing, try to roll eight or nine putts out of 10 off the end of the ruler or sword, so aim high with your goals!

However, if you feel like you’re reading greens correctly, but still missing, your problem is most likely not hitting putts on your start line

For more information please visit www golftec com D

The Importance of Start Line Hannah explains that start line is very important as it’s the only way to really know if you didn’t make a putt because of your read or because you didn’t hit the ball on your intended start line. If you hit the putt right where you wanted to on your intended start line and it misses, the fix is rather easy Simply adjust your read to play more or less break de pending on where you usually miss putts (Play more break if you miss on the low side, and vice versa, play less break if you miss putts on the high side )

Place three dots in front of your ball

Three Drills to Improve Start Direction

Another drill is to place a gate (or two tees to make a gate) 12 to 14 inches in front of your ball When you can repeatedly get the ball rolling through the gate without touching either side you know you’re hitting your putts right where you want to Also, be aware of which side of the gate you hit the most as it will show your tendency and allow you to correct that issue

Each dot should be spaced out a foot apart Continue practicing until you can roll your putt over all three dots. Then you know your putt is started on line for the first three feet

Work on consistently rolling putts on your intended start line to help you read putts better

Whether it is just the glutes being weak or there is a true neurological inhi bition, both are very common on the av erage person So, I have provided 10 of the biggest rea s o n s f o r G l u t e w e a k n e s s e s t o d a y b u t p l e a s e b e a w a r e t h a t t h e r e a r e p l e n t y other reasons that can contribute to weak ness 1 . Yo u s e e t h i s p o s t u r e v e r y evidently in today’s young people 4 . Lack of exercise from five year olds to 85 year olds, we have become an ex t r e m e l y l a z y s o c i e t y ! M o s t o f o u r k i d s don’t even get phys ed class in school anymore for gosh sakes! And the saddest p a r t o f t h i s f a c t i s t h e r e c e n t s t u d y t h a t shows that 50% of our young people are c o n s i d e r e d o v e r w e i g h t o r o b e s e ! O f course, it makes sense because over 60% of the adult population in this country is now considered overweight or obese! 5 . 6 . Back pain! This is probably one of the most common since most golfers struggle w i t h b a c k p a i n a t s o m e p o i n t ! Yo u s e e when you get back pain; the brain will in hibit the “core musculature” (which the glutes are part of) so that further injury doesn’t happen to the lower back! The original name identified the natural springs which surfaced on the backside of the hogback west of Littleton Initially a nine hole course, Willow Springs Country Club’s original nine is now the back nine featuring winding fairways with elevation changes, red rock outcroppings and stun ning views of the metro area and Red Rocks Amphitheater With the removal of some trees, it’s now possible to catch phe nomenal glimpses of downtown Denver and DIA from eight or nine holes

The newly designed Red Rocks Country Club now appeals to a younger crowd and is truly family oriented. Families who are moving out west of the city have discovered Red Rocks for the diverse club activities Red Rocks has recognized the necessity to expand the pool complex as well as the clubhouse and surrounding areas to accom modate the growing membership

Live music, corn hole, and bocci ball is the theme on Friday nights when the driving range closes to make way for an evening full of entertainment These events com bined with a Friday night happy hour draw large numbers of members, many of who live on the property Future plans include fire pits between the clubhouse and the massive putting green

Changes over the years at Red Rocks Country Club have varied from modifica tions to the course, the addition of a mod ern clubhouse along with many amenities, to the various names of the club The spec tacular net result is one of the premiere country club settings in the Denver area, just west of C 470 on Belleview Ave

In 1993 the club’s name was changed to Whale Rock Country Club because of the prominent rock outcropping above and overlooking the problematic 16th green That green was altered and softened to now feature a collection area in the front of the putting surface

The golf course closed down in the fall of 2021 to reconfigure sixteen of the eighteen greens, featuring plenty of subtle move ment and elevation changes. During the course revamping, which was designed by golf course architect Kevin Atkinson, a 38,000 square foot putting challenge green with multiple holes was added It’s a mam moth putting green, a putting course and is also incorporates the green for hole #2 Wa gers which weren’t settled during the round can be resolved on the new short uphill par 3 19th hole after the round is completed In addition to the sixteen new greens and sand traps, railroad ties have been scattered in bunkers and surrounding areas to honor the past These additional challenges mirror those of the pioneers heading west through the hogback to seek their fortune during gold rush days

Personal achievement embraces compet ing with yourself to perform better than the last time For example, beat your lowest score. Process goals have a broader scope. For example, developing breathing tech niques, imagining the golf ball's flight, or fo cusing on maintaining posture on the course According to many sports studies, using a combination of goal types proves to be more effective than using any single type

Goal Setting for Spor ts Perfor mance

Outcome goals have included social comparison, statistics, rewards, and win ning For instance, make the team, reach the finals, and win a championship.

A sportsperson and non athlete might have already tried goal setting and strug gled; however, professional guidance can improve success rates and promote ac countability. Research is continually ex ploring the benefits of goal setting and goal achievement The benefits have included relentless intrinsic motivation and satisfac tion regardless of outcomes

By Jonathan Hensey DIVOT Contributing Writer MD: Effective goals are short term ob jectives that lead to long term dreams or outcome targets For example, golfers can aim to win championships, but training the body and the mind to compete are the in termediate goals.

The overall purpose of the exchange was to clear the way for construction of the new Tointon Academy of Pre Engineering a K 8 school, but the work ultimately created many additional long term benefits includ ing better access and improved safety for the new Tointon Academy, significant water efficiency improvements and safer golfing corridors This collaboration resulted in a total project cost of $6 2 million, shared between the city and District 6 Partners worked to gether to plan, implement and fund the re alignment of several golf holes on the Boomerang south course The land ex change gives District 6 the ability to de velop the entire parcel of land surrounding the new K 8 building and access the school from 71st Avenue more effectively For the Boomerang Golf Course, this project has reduced noise and safety concerns Addi tionally, it provided a unique layout with enhanced golf and water features In the golf course reconfiguration, the city’s Water and Sewer department led the effort to create more efficient water storage and develop a regional pump station for non potable irrigation water After this proj ect, the city will no longer lose approxi mately 350 acre feet of water a year (about 175 Olympic sized pools) due to the un lined ponds throughout the golf course. The city constructed a regional irrigation system to provide raw, untreated water to the golf course, school site, future development, and community All these improvements al lowed for water savings, improved playing conditions, and reduced cost of labor and maintenance The City of Greeley, Boomerang Links Golf Course and District 6 collaborated to address numerous challenges throughout the project A record amount of rain during construction and a major flood in 2021 damaged construction and delayed reseed ing the turf grass Working together, project partners stayed on target to open the new school in the fall of 2022 and kept the golf course open and playable throughout con struction. That in of itself was difficult for anyone it was night and day compared to now ” Irwin was in Charlotte at the 1969 Kem per Open and watched him finish when he won by four strokes over Charles Coody, his second tour win at the time In 1974, when Irwin won his first of three U S Opens at Winged Foot (Mamaroneck, N.Y.), both Irwin, Douglass (who tied for 18th) and their wives (Sally and Joyce, re spectively) celebrated that evening with hotel room service, one of countless din ners the couples had together Douglass won three times on the PGA Tour (with three playoff losses) and was one of the early players to have great suc cess on the Senior Tour (since renamed the Champions Tour). He won 11 times on that circuit, including one major, as he defeated the legendary Gary Player by one stroke in the 1986 U S Senior Open in Columbus, jors: in 1969, he tied for 13th in the U S Open and for 19th in the Masters; he tied for 18th in the 1974 U.S. Open (when Irwin won) and tied for 17th in the 1975 PGA Championship He became just the fifth player in history to play in 500 tournaments when he reached the mark in 2003 and won over $9 million as a professional He had turned pro in 1960, earned his PGA Tour card in 1963 and joined the Senior Tour in 1986 where he would become a fixture for over 20 years, playing in exactly 600 Sen ior/Champions Tour events, with 151 top 10 finishes along with 283 in the top 25 (he made the cut an astonishing 567 times)

“Dale was so very proud of being from Fort Morgan and the University of Col orado,” Irwin said Wednesday evening from Akron, where he is set to compete in a pro Am “He wore the school colors proudly Personally, I’ve lost a close friend I’ve have for some 57 years More impor tantly, golf has lost a real gentleman and a man who really championed golf through out the country He did so much for a lot of people, particularly in Colorado There was never a bad word you heard from any one about Dale Douglass ” “Dale was like my big brother and I was like his bratty little brother,” he mused “We throw the word mentor around a lot, but in Dale’s case, I can elevate the word mentor to friend. I’ll miss him.”

“The Grand Classic ended Saturday. He was in our home Sunday He came to work Monday,” recalled Craig “He jumped right on my cart It’s like he had been on a golf course his whole life ” Being a rescue dog, Linc’s life before adoption is a mystery Craig believes he is from Oklahoma and was possibly displaced from his family during a severe weather event. For reasons Craig does not know, Linc stays clear of the various ponds on the Pole Creek course If there is a puddle in a cart path, Linc makes a point to go around water rather than through it Craig believes Linc is 8 or 9 years old Though shy, Craig does not think that Linc was abused That first summer, Linc was protective of not just Craig, but the cart they drove around the course. It was almost like his Shepard herding instincts had kicked in In stead of herding cattle, Linc was now help ing wrangle Craig’s crew

Linc found a happy home when adopted by Superintendent Craig Cahalane.

The shy Linc turns into a different animal when running the fairways at Pole Creek.

The Supers often work 7 days/70 hours a week, perform backbreaking labor in harsh weather conditions, manage a large staff of maintenance workers, and make daily decisions that affect the health, design and aesthetics of the course And if that isn’t enough pressure, all of this work needs to be done under the finicky supervision of the ul timate boss: Mother Nature So it’s no surprise that many Superin tendents need a wingman a four legged course companion that always has their backs Call them: “Super ’s best friend ” “I say ‘load up’ and he jumps right in the cart,” says Pole Creek Golf Club Superin tendent Craig Cahalane of his dog Linc “She’s a built in stress reliever,” says Colorado National Superintendent Rob Neuhauser of his dog Abby. “Gus thinks he is King of the Club Car,” says Doug Choate the Superintendent of Battlement Mesa Golf Course of his Yellow Lab “It’s like his chariot ” Here’s a look at three “Super Dogs” in Colorado pooches who have somehow hit the Doggie Lottery LINC... Pole Creek Golf Club, Tabernash Most people choose their pets Not Craig and Kristen Cahalane Their Border Collie/Aussie Shepard mix chose them In June 2018, Craig was playing in the Grand Classic, an annual tournament at Pole Creek, which is located just north of Winter Park. At an on course refreshment stand, a rescue dog named Linc ran to Craig, jumped up and gave him a look that said, “Please take me home ” Linc was at the tournament with a representative from Mountain Pet Rescue, a Grand County based organization that matches abandoned and orphaned mountain dogs with new owners Craig immediately pulled out his phone and texted wife Kristen: “I think we found our dog ”

Linc’s most important duty, however, has been becoming a needed companion for Craig The spring of 2018 was particularly rough for the Superintendent Fifteen of Pole Creek’s 30 greens were damaged dur ing the long and often severe winter in Grand County With a playing season of only 5 months, Craig was under a lot of pressure to get the course playable as soon as possible Having Linc by his side, Craig weathered the storm “Before Linc, I was by myself in my cart All of a sudden, I had

The Cahalanes had been looking for the right pet ever since their two dogs passed away in 2012 and 2015 Their son, Fletcher, was born in 2010. But there was a void in the Cahalane family since the loss of their belo ed pets Their son needed a dog and so did Craig and Kristen Let’s just say the Cahalane’s new pet was “the missing Linc.”

Colorado National Golf Club. Erie Abby is a 6 year old Boxer who roams a 100 acre dog wonderland in Erie other wise known as Colorado National Golf Club Abby is as much of Colorado Na tional as the big views of Longs Peak and the CU Buff golf team The boxer ’s expres sive face looks like it came straight out of a Dr Seuss book

A daily ritual at Battlement Mesa is Gus inspecting the sprinkler system.

ABBY...

While Abby’s always first with Rob, she’s not the Super ’s first boxer Rob’s pre vious dog was Lucy, a boxer who passed in 2014 A year passed, and Rob knew it was time to give another boxer the gift of golf. “She’s been on the course since she was 13 weeks old It’s all she knows This is home ” Abby doesn’t so much run around Col orado National It’s actually more of a hop, skip, and jump She bounds across the fair ways, darts through the rough, and rolls around the greens Her every movement is an expression of joy and freedom.

In addition to being course ambassador, Abby’s job duties include chasing geese and hunting rabbits But her favorite duty is to supervise the mowing team When Rob gives the word, Abby hops onto the Toro mower and begins gliding down the fairway In Abby’s mind, she is driving the mower The Queen of Colorado National rides with a Seussian smile that would make The Grinch green with envy “She’s part of the team,” Rob says “I love having her out here She brings joy to the course Just seeing her makes you smile ” If you believe in reincarnation, then Abby, Gus, and Linc must have been de vout, caring and pious in previous lives Their reward in this life is uninhibited joy and freedom on some of the most beautiful golf courses in Colorado The real winners, however, are the Su perintendents themselves Bringing your dog to work is a perk of having the toughest job in golf “It’s enjoyable to watch the dogs, because it is just such a great envi ronment without the restrictions of being in the yard”, says Battlement Mesa’s Doug Choate “It’s dog heaven ” Chris Wheeler is a photojournalist, doc umentary producer and dog lover D

One of Abby’s job responsibilities is supervising the mowing crew at Colorado National.

Gus is the 3rd Yellow Lab course dog owned by Superintendent Rob Choate.

Abby is Rob Neuhauser ’s second Boxer.

DIVOTMagazine.com l Summer/Fall Issue 2022 27 Feature a buddy to talk to, someone to take my mind off the golf course,” said Craig For the most part, Linc is the most mild mannered being at Pole Creek But his de meanor instantly changes when Craig says, “Let’s run.” At that moment, the shy Linc transforms from Bark Kent to Super Dog. The Aussie Border Collie immediately begins sprinting down Ranch Course #1 faster than a speeding Titleist With a huge smile on his face, Craig rides alongside, pushing the golf cart’s pedal to the metal Observing this, it’s hard to decide who is having more fun

“Whenever I ride by a member, they al ways say ‘Hi’ to Abby, then greet me,” said Superintendent Rob Neuhauser “Abby’s always first ” Not that Rob minds “She’s the perfect dog She has human qualities She’s basically a big lap dog ”

GUS... Battlement Mesa Golf Club, Parachute In the early morning, as the sprinklers turn on at Battlement Mesa Golf Course, a yellow flash streaks across the fairways The yellow flash is actually a Yellow Lab named “Gus”

“Chasing the sprinklers is his favorite activity,” says Doug Choate, the Superin tendent of Battlement Mesa Golf Course. “If a sprinkler pops up, he bites the stream of water And as soon as the head turns off, he starts looking for the next one It’s ridiculous He will do it for hours” Gus whose full name is “Augusta” is named after golf royalty Ever since attend ing The Masters in 2015, Doug knew a dog named “Gus” was in his future. Gus was preceded at Battlement Mesa by two other yellow labs owned by Doug “We got Gus when he was 8 weeks old The yellows have a great demeanor He’s mellow around the house,” Doug says “But if you show him something to chase, it is ‘game on ’” Yellow labs are well known as bird hunters. Let’s just say that Battlement Mesa does not have a goose problem. But the fun and joy of having Gus on the course almost came to a tragic end while Doug was playing golf last Thanksgiving “On the first hole, I chipped it on the green, Gus ran up, grabbed the ball and accidentally swallowed it Three days later, Gus had emer gency surgery to remove the ball “If the ball had entered Gus’s intestinal tract, it would likely have been fatal,” Doug remembered. Fortunately, Gus made a quick recovery But even since the unlucky Thanksgiving, the yel low lab of Battlement Mesa has not has not taken a sniff of a golf ball
