When does the Colorado golf season begin...

Have you heard the saying “Ask nine Coloradans when golf season starts, get ten answers”?

If you haven’t, it’s because I just made it up. Yet in my maxim lies some truth.

Some Coloradans will say the golf season begins March 15th, the date when USGA allows scores to count towards handicaps. Others believe the season starts when their skis and boards are hung up for good. Die-hards who layer up on sunny 30 degree days will tell you the golf season doesn’t have a start…because it never ends.

No matter which of those options you subscribe to, all golfers can agree that when the calendar turns to April, and Spring is officially in session, there’s a little extra pep in our step. The weather is warmer, the swirling winds die down, and trees begin to

leaf out.

In other words, it’s time to tee up our hopes and dreams for yet another season of glorious Colorado golf.

We have our annual routines like cleaning our Footjoys, putting in a fresh rangefinder battery, and promising ourselves this is the year we figure it out.

But in addition to our normal rituals, we should add a new one for 2024, by being grateful that we get to play this glorious game in Colorado. While the world knows the Centennial State for predominant recreational activities like skiing and bouldering, it remains one of the most underrated golf scenes.

The Colorado golf courses fuse a virtuous triad of accessibility, affordability, and beauty. And don’t forget variety!

Colorado has 240 courses with +/- 170 being public or semi-private. In the Denver-metro area alone, there are 85 courses with 60 of them open to the public.

As someone on a mission to play every course in Colorado (played 82 so far), I’ve logged thousands of miles in my Tiguan finding courses that capture the personality and ethos of the state’s diverse ecosystems. Through day trips or road trips, whether

driving through small town mainstreets or mountain switchbacks, you’ll witness Colorado’s grit and grace in and around its golf courses.

You can head towards the Easterns Plains for quaint, prairie courses (Quail Dunes in Fort Morgan or Sky Ranch in Sterling) or head towards the Western Slope to play atop a ranch (Rifle Creek) or staggering rock formations (Redlands Mesa in Grand Junction or Battlement Mesa in Parachute). If you’re ambitious enough for a three hour day drive, you can find heaven on earth at Lakota Links in New Castle

Do you know that Keystone, Breck, Vail - the three headed monster of the Epic local pass - all have golf courses ... sometimes opening as early as late April?

How many of the 25 courses named “Creek” will you play this year?

If you want superlatives, you can play the courses with highest elevation (Mt. Massive in Leadville or Copper Creek in Copper Mountain which boasts the highest tee box in North America at 9,863 ft). Perhaps you want to play a course with the most shorelines in the country (Pelican Lakes in Windsor).

Of course, not everyone has the time to make golf a full day adventure. If you live in the Denver-metro area and can’t leave the house for long - that’s okay!

Play the pristine farm-themed course at Racoon Creek in Littleton. Or if you prefer elevation gains and drops without going to the mountains, visit my most underrated course in the area Red Hawk Ridge. Maybe you have an interest in prehistory, and would like to check out some dinosaur bones and footprints, while playing at Fossil Trace in Golden.

Whether you’ve been playing for decades, started during the pandemic, or are a first-timer, there’s no shortage of courses for your level of both skill and adventure.

Golf season starts now!

Foothills Golf Course’s New Clubhouse Now Open!

turing 36 holes and a driving range with expansive mountain views, Foothills Golf Course is one of the Denver Metro Area’s most popular public courses.

The original clubhouse, built in 1974, was no longer serving the growing needs of golfers and the community. The new design incorporates an expanded restaurant and terrace with an indoor-outdoor bar that is perfect for the Colorado lifestyle, as well as a much larger event space. It also includes indoor storage space for our fleet of golf carts.

While Foothills Golf Course attracts golfers from across the state, many of our regulars feel a sense of ownership of this public course. With this in mind, our vision was to elevate the expected quality of a public clubhouse facility, while still maintaining a “golffirst” experience.

One beloved feature of the original clubhouse was the elevated upper level, which allowed for sweeping views of the Front Range to the west. The new clubhouse maintains this elevated feature, lifting the entire main level above the 18th hole. This created

an opportunity to build an expansive westfacing deck and to treat the earth outside the building like an amphitheater, allowing for more indoor-outdoor activities and capacity for larger group events.

The building is designed to last, with the

catching glulam columns, beams and roof decking throughout the building. A highly insulated metal rainscreen, glazing that provides ample daylight throughout the space and strategically placed shading devices along the western exposure of the building help keep the building cool on our hot summer days.

Another noteworthy upgrade from the previous facility’s design was the inclusion of expanded lounges for socialization and dining, featuring direct bar access, and integrated shade structures throughout all outdoor spaces.

For more information please check out the Foothills Golf Course website at www.foothillsgolf.org

Hyland Hills Golf Course Celebrates 60 Years

On any given day, the Greg Mastriona Golf Courses at Hyland Hills are buzzing with activity, as they have for over 60 years. Now recognized as one of the most popular courses in the Denver Metro area, the public course has been making history since it opened in 1963 as the first golf course in Adams County.

The courses’ original 150 acres were secured by the Hyland Hills Park and Recreation District in 1962 through a $300,000 voter-approved bond and the first ever federal open space grant for golf course land acquisition. Designed by Henry Hughes, the 18-hole course was the first in the Northern Metropolitan area and was selected to host the 1st annual Colorado State Public Links Championship just two years after opening.

This popularity has allowed the Hyland Hills courses to expand significantly over the years: now nearly 250 acres, they include the 18-hole Championship Gold Course, 9-hole Blue Course, North Par 3, South Par 3, lighted driving range, putting and chipping practice areas, and full-service restaurant complete with a patio and two banquet rooms.

“We pride ourselves on being able to provide a high-quality experience at an af-

fordable price,” stated Val Heim III, PGA, General Manager, “It’s one of the many things that makes Hyland Hills such a unique place to learn, play, and enjoy every aspect of the game.”

The Greg Mastriona Golf Courses at Hyland Hills are known for their stunning scenery, variety of offerings for all skill levels, and well-rounded social experience.

Originally agricultural land, the courses take golfers over rolling hills; through mature trees, weeping willows, and panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains; and around several ponds that make for a challenging and rewarding play experience. One such pond is on the Gold Course’s 8th hole, named as one of the toughest golf holes in the Denver Metro

area by the Denver Gazette.

For those not yet ready to take on the most challenging aspects of the course, the Greg Mastriona Golf Courses offer plenty of opportunities to improve your golf game in a friendly yet informative setting. The courses offer individual and group golf lessons; five different leagues for men, women, and seniors; Glow Golf on the South Par 3 throughout the summer; and their signature Ladies Night Out series gives female golfers of all skill levels the chance to learn from PGA pros and practice their game on the 9hole Blue Course or South Par 3.

The course’s commitment to welcoming all players extends to the youngest of golfers, too. The North Par 3 is used to

teach the sport to over 200 young people each year through Hyland Hills’ Junior Golf programs and kids can play for free with a paying adult Mondays-Thursdays after 4pm on the Blue Course and any time on the North and South Par 3.

With the acquisition of the course’s clubhouse in 2023, Hyland Hills has expanded its après-golf offerings to include a Music on the Patio series, karaoke nights, tournament watch parties, $26 prime rib nights, and more.

Hosting a combined 118,000 rounds each year, it is no wonder that the courses have received numerous awards over the years, including being named one of the Top 100 Golf Courses to Play in America by Golf Digest and repeatedly voted as the Best Golf Course by residents in Colorado Community Media’s Best of the Best Awards.

The Greg Mastriona Golf Courses will celebrate their 60th anniversary this year, starting with an anniversary party on June 27th and continuing throughout the summer with limited-edition merchandise, drink specials, and more.

Golf Ball Damage Your Home? Call Your Insurance Agent

A very common concern for those who live, or are thinking of living, on a golf course is the issue of errant balls and the damage they can in fl ict on a house. For some, the joy of living on a golf course can be overshadowed by the looming idea of dented siding, broken windows, or cracked car windshields in the driveway. However, there are things homeowners can do easily to protect their assets. Most importantly, it’s key to find a trusted insurance agent and let them know all the details of your new golf course home when covering your property. Also, understand the liability, if any, the course your home sits on may assume which de-

pends on if the home or the course was there first.

Let's take a look at some common concerns and how to address them:

Do I need extra insurance living on a golf course?

When you buy a home and live on a golf course, it is most realistic to assume that there is a risk of home damage from a golf ball. This assumed risk is also something the insurance company takes into consideration, but usually rates shouldn’t be higher to cover your home than any other home. Be sure to mention this to your insurance company, and the location of your home may matter as well. It can really vary by state and if the course or the home was built first. A trusted insurance agent will be sure to get you the coverage you need so make sure to reach out. The course you buy your home on may have some documentation about what risks they assume as well, so ask for that.

My car was damaged in my driveway by a golf ball, is this car insurance or homeowners insurance?

Where can I get special coverage for living on a golf course?

Again, you don’t need special coverage when living on a golf course; unless you own the course. Any company that insures your home will take care of any damage claims under your home insurance policy. Just be sure to mention this to your agent when covering your home as there may be a few more questions to make sure you get the coverage you need.

My home was damaged by a golf ball, who is at fault?

This one can get tricky, and it can really depend on the fact that your home or the golf course was built first. Sometimes it can vary by state as well, so it’s paramount to check with your insurance company and/or agent. However, as mentioned, living on a golf course comes with assumed risk. Most of the time, unless it can be proven that a golfer intentionally caused damage or the golfer voluntarily confesses to the errant shot, no individual would be held responsible and you as the homeowner would need to file a claim to fix the damage.

It is best to consult with your insurance company but as a general rule, if your car is damaged at your home, such as a wild golf ball hitting your car window in the driveway, then your homeowner's insurance covers it. If you have the option, keeping your car in the garage may be a smart idea to keep it safe from flying golf balls. However, if you’re ever randomly driving down the road and a ball flies over the fence and hits your car then the car insurance, or even the golf course, would cover that since driving down the road has no assumed risk of being hit by a golf ball.

Broken Tee Has a New Friend

DIVOT Contributing Writer

Broken Tee Golf Course in Englewood is no stranger to wildlife. In the early 90s, their 18th hole featured a pesky fox who would take balls from the fairway into his foxhole. In the last two years, both a great horned owl and red tailed hawk have built nests on the back nine.

Yet none of those animals have brought chaos, intrigue, and even federal law into the equation quite like Broken Tee’s newest avian resident - the bald eagle.

The first eagle was discovered in early March by course superintendent Jeremiah Stumpff. He initially noticed the bird of prey circulating the middle of the course, followed by a repetitive procurement of massive seven foot long wooden sticks . A few days later, a second eagle was discovered, and it was assumed both were parents building a nest for their eggs.

Stumpff finally saw the nest and called Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Officials were surprised, since early March is usually too late in the season to build a nest. Perhaps, it was a decoy nest to ward off predators.

protocol was still in order. Afterall, the bald eagle - our national bird and once an endangered species - is protected by the federal government.

A quote from Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) states:

“No permitted, authorized, or human encroachment activities within ½ mile (2640 feet, 800 meters) radius of active nest sites from December 1 through July 31. The majority of bald eagle chicks in Colorado have fledged by July 31; however, for late nesting and potential re-nesting bald eagles, CPW recommends seasonal restrictions beyond July 31 if chicks are still present in the nest.”

Herein lies the intrigue with the eagle landing on the golf course.

The quoted radius would have shut down the majority of Broken Tee’s back nine and hurt their business which fields 250+ tee times every day. But then again, Broken Tee’s management and Englewood’s local government wanted to take appropriate steps to provide the eagles peaceful accommodations.

All parties found a compromise; The bald eagle’s hole would be shortened. This would eliminate golfers from being viewed as a

threat and eliminate wayward golf shots heading in the nest’s vicinity.

This was a great win for Broken Tee considering that when an eagle nested within Aspen Glen golf course in Carbondale, an entire hole shut down. At least Broken Tee was in a position to keep this hole, even while shortening it over 300 yards.

So far I’ve spared you a trite, generic joke about an “eagle on a golf course”. But dad humor aside, I’d be remiss without mentioning most eagles occur on a par 5. Broken Tee’s eagles were no exception.

Because they landed in trees adjacent the dogleg of a par 5, Broken Tee was able to salvage the hole into a par 3.

Golfers pulling up to the temporary tee box are able to spot the eagles, but with their box situated about 80 yards parallel, they pose no risk of an errant tee shot scaring off the birds.

For the golfer’s scoring experience, taking two strokes off a hole is a massive change, especially since the hole’s handicap index changed from one of the course’s hardest to the easiest.

Expecting this amended hole to last the majority of the golf season, Broken Tee had the CGA rerate the course. While it hasn’t yet changed its print scorecards, Broken Tee’s new scorecard has been virtually altered via GolfGenius (for tournaments) and on the GHIN app (for recreational play).

Broken Tee has garnered quite the buzz because of the bald eagles, but politely reminds everyone that it remains an active public golf course and trespassing birders are prohibited. If you want to see the eagles, your best bet is to visit Englewood and play a round

One of my biggest frustrations with the golf industry today is its focus on instruction and equipment only. It has been drilled into our heads that if you don’t get the best clubs and a lot of instruction, then your game will never be as good as it can. I say phooey and believe the missing and most important component to success for an amateur golfer is an optimally functioning body. This, unfortunately, is also the least talked about part of the game that is discussed, and THE MOST IMPORTANT!

In my 24 years of individually assessing every client that walks in my door, my data says strongly that 98% of those tested have poor posture, a weak core and decreased body awareness. These problems can lead to decreased range of motion, decreased rotation ability, and pain.

So here we go… information gathered by PGA teaching professionals, and research done by Titleist Performance Institute, the three most common swing faults most golfers struggle with are:

“Early Extension”

When the hips and spine start into hip extension or straighten up to early in the downswing, it is termed Early Extension. This is where the hips and pelvis move closer to the ball on downswing “Loss of Posture”

Loss of posture is any significant alteration from your body’s original set up angles during your golf swing. This loss of posture can affect all aspects of the golf swing including timing, balance and rhythm.

“Over The Top”

Over the top is perhaps the most common swing fault among high handicap golfers. It usually occurs due to an overuse or over-dominance of the upper body on the downswing. As a result the club is thrown outside of the intended swing plane, with the club-head approaching the ball from the outside in. This creates a pull if the clubface is square or a slice if the clubface is open.

These three swing faults are characterized by the same bio-mechanical (body) deficiencies:

1) Stiffness of joints in lower body- hips, vertebrae, sacroiliac joints, knees, ankles

2) Can’t rotate around lead hip (internal rotation)- if the pelvis is unable to rotate around the lead hip due to joint or muscular restrictions then forward and lateral movements will dominate the pattern.

3) Inability to separate upper and lower body- allows the player to maintain a stable posture and a proper sequence of motion during the swing. Limited trunk to pelvis separation is usually caused by reduced spinal mobility and flexibility.

4) Inability to stabilize core- Abs/Glutesthe ability to stabilize the lower body is directly proportional to gluteal and abdominal strength. A stable neutral pelvic posture helps prevent thrusting toward the ball.

So in the end, the body is a main determining factor to the success and longevity to your game and can be changed and optimized by using specific exercise moves related to your body’s needs!

My Golfers Elbow Journey & Recovery

Golf is such an amazing sport. The highs, the lows and everything in between. I have played the game my entire life and have been a teacher for almost 20 years. About 5 years ago I noticed significant pain in my left forearm. It started out as mild irritation, but then it became chronic. It would hurt while I was teaching, playing, skiing, working out and even just holding a cup. I tried P.T., dry needling, massage and most other modalities but nothing seemed to last and the pain persisted. It was miserable!

At that time, I had only received shockwave therapy on my Achilles tendon and a bad sprained ankle. I was under the impression it was only for my lower extremity foot and ankle issues. I told my podiatrist about my golfer’s elbow and he said shockwave was great for healing golfers and tennis elbow and most tendon issues. I received 6 treatments over about 7 weeks. After my left forearm healed, I ended up with it on the other side about a year later. Back to shockwave I went and to my surprise both sides healed up and I have not had any issues since.

Shockwave therapy is not a type of electrical therapy, as it doesn't involve the direct application of electric currents to the body. Instead, shockwave therapy utilizes acoustic waves, which are high-energy sound waves, to treat various musculoskeletal conditions. These acoustic waves are applied to the affected area of the body, where they stimulate the body's natural healing processes, promote tissue regeneration, and alleviate pain. Exploring shockwave for injuries is worth looking into for anyone who is seeking effective non-invasive relief from acute and chronic conditions.

Why shockwave therapy stands out:

• Versatility for soft tissue issues

• Non-Invasive

• Minimal Downtime

• Long Lasting Results

• Over 80% success rate

• Cost-Effective

• Faster, easier healing and recovery

If you are suffering from chronic pain or recovering from a recent injury, I highly recommend you explore shockwave treatments. Shockwave therapy is the future of regenerative soft tissue repair and regeneration! Call Regen3 Therapeu-

Quivira Los Cabos: An Extraordinary Land’s End Community

Set along the Pacific beachfront at the southern tip of the Baja peninsula, Quivira Los Cabos is a 1,850-acre master-planned resort and residential resort community that has raised the bar for luxury living in Los Cabos.

Blending unparalleled natural beauty with sophisticated urban design and world-class infrastructure, this top-tier development offers luxurious living spaces, state-of-the-art amenities and direct access to one of the most desirable coastlines in the world.

Having scored major successes with Copala (condos, residences) and Coronado (single-story residences), Quivira Los Cabos will debut its new Alvar community in May. Fusing modern luxury with Mexico’s rich architectural heritage, Alvar offers an exclusive living experience in residences that incorporate contemporary aesthetics with traditional elements. Alvar will reinforce the development’s reputation as the finest lifestyle hideaway in Los Cabos.

The community’s striking, contemporary design was created by GVI, the same architectural group behind The Residences at The St. Regis at Quivira Los Cabos, Alvar’s neighbor. Conceived as an exclusive private community, Alvar consists of seven buildings divided in two low-rise towers with one, two, or three levels. Three- or four-bedroom apartments are offered, with one or two penthouses per building. All 68 units will offer splendid views of the ocean and the rolling fairways at Quivira Golf Club’s Jack Nicklaus Signature course.

The wide, spacious floor plans at Alvar start at 3,120 square feet. Interior design accents include generous terraces and common spaces ideal for easy living, especially for extended or multi-generational families as well as visiting friends.

The perfect complement to this exciting new project is Alvar’s multi-purpose Clubhouse, which owners can use year-round. The Clubhouse layout features different levels that give each area (roofed terrace, fullyequipped gym, swimming pools, etc.) an exclusive atmosphere. In addition, residents can enjoy private walking and cycling paths threaded through the desert, each offering panoramic views of the mountains and the sea.

Alvar community owners have access to residential services that provide comprehensive management, including 24/7 security,

maintenance, landscaping and housekeeping. Tailored property management solutions and a vacation rental program ensure that every aspect of home ownership is cared for, allowing residents to enjoy a worry-free lifestyle. This includes a personalized concierge service designed to simplify and enhance the stay for both owners and renters, making every visit seamless and enjoyable. Additionally, the rental program is structured to allow owners to maximize their investment potential through both short-term vacation rentals and long-term leasing options, providing flexibility and profitability in managing their property.

As for amenities, the community and its family of Pueblo Bonito Resorts offer access to ARMONIA Wellness Collection spa treatments as well as a bevy of restaurants featuring a variety of cuisines, with more than 20 dining outlets within the property. These venues provide a rich and diverse culinary experience, enhancing the luxury lifestyle available at Quivira.

Golfers can test their skills at Quivira Golf Club, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. An aesthetic tour de force and an unforgettable test from any set of tees, this 7,085-yard showstopper may be the most daring and eclectic that course designer Jack Nicklaus has ever built. Recently voted to Golf Digest’s roster of the “World’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses,” Quivira offers more oceanfront exposure—and more unforgettable thrills--than any other course in Los Cabos.

Grafted onto a stunning Land’s End site

marked by sheer granite cliffs, massive windswept dunes and rolling desert foothills, Quivira resembles one of those fantasy golf calendars with mind-boggling holes airbrushed onto canyon walls lapped by surging seas. It confronts players with twisting arroyos, acres of cactus, lots of rock, Saharalike expanses of sand…in sum, a little bit of everything that Cabo has to offer.

In the end, Quivira Golf Club is more than just a golf course. It’s a breathtaking journey through one of Cabo’s most dramatic landscapes, designed to offer an unrivaled golfing adventure with each round.

An all-inclusive facility, the Quivira Golf Club offers complimentary food and refreshments at four on-course comfort stations. Tops among them is the open-air ‘Oasis’ set high above the ninth hole, which offers stellar ocean views, superb regional fare and icecold refreshments. Before or after the round,

players can fine-tune their games at a double-ended practice facility and short-game area located a mere wedge shot away from the rolling surf.

There’s more. The Beach Club at Quivira Los Cabos, situated adjacent to the golf club’s open-air, thatched-roof clubhouse, serves as an exclusive seaside sanctuary. This private retreat is designed to blend luxury with the natural beauty of the Baja coastline.

Among The Beach Club’s amenities:

• Swimming Facilities: The club boasts a large swimming pool and a sun-drenched terrace perched right at the edge of the beach, offering panoramic views of the sea.

• Fitness & Recreation: A custom-designed, fully-equipped gym is available to residents, along with lush green areas designated for special events, providing a versatile outdoor venue.

• Unique Entertainment: One of the club’s most distinctive features is the “sailboat cinema,” an innovative entertainment option where movies are projected on canvas under the stars.

• Convenience: Comprehensive facilities include showers and dressing rooms to ensure comfort and functionality, enhancing the leisure experience for residents, their families and guests.

Quivira Los Cabos has blossomed into a spectacular, upscale, amenity-rich community that ranks among the very best in Mexico.
