Ty Walker, the Colorado Regional Manager and GOLFTEC Coach demonstrates wrist bends and how to use those bends properly to hit great golf shots.

Using your wrist like a fish tale and flipping it early in your swing is a common flaw. By Ryan Gager DIVOT Contributing Writer

How Do My Wrist Bends Effect My Golf Swing? Ty says this the number one question he gets from Students is, how can I have a more consistent swing? Everyone wants consistency in their golf game and, of course, a tip to help them achieve it. According to Ty it comes down to your wrists, and understanding their function can help you play better golf. Wrists work in three different ways. As a fish tail, a karate chop or like a screwdriver. The most common problem Ty sees in golf is when a golfer flips their wrist early (like a fish tale) and tries to help the ball into the air.

The Cure For More Consistency

To maintain proper wrist bends through impact, you have to start slow. It’s process we take all Students through at GOLFTEC. First, you want to practice getting into the backwards K position at impact. To do this, imitate impact without hitting a ball, stop at this position and take note of your wrist position. The next step is to introduce a ball and hit half swing punch shots, again ensuring your wrists don’t flip at impact. The shot should fly low and your follow through shouldn’t go above your shoulders. For great tips like this and more, visit your nearest GOLFTEC and get started with a local Coach. They will have you making the proper wrist bends in your swing to help you make more consistent contact, which will help you play your best golf! For more information please visit www.golftec.com D

Local high school golfer competes at Augusta National

It may seem like a fairy tale. Local high school golfer competing in Drive, Chip and Putt at Augusta National. But for this Columbine High School sophomore, Matai Naqica, and his golf coach Cory Olsen, it’s the reward after years of hard work and many hours on the course. I caught up with Naqica and Olsen at Augusta National, when the thrill of walking in the footsteps of many leg-

8

ends, like Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus, was still fresh. But it wasn’t an easy journey. Naqica said, “Golf is not like other sports. My family and I sacrificed a lot, and I had to put in a lot of time and energy. I missed a lot of things, choosing golf practice over attending homecoming. I’d put in 12-15 hour days in the summer, on the golf course. People think I exaggerated, but I would be at the golf course at 5:30

Matai Naqica

when the sun came up, and often not leave until 9 at night.” And that hard work paid off for Naqica on Sunday, April 3rd. While he reported that he didn’t do as well as he wanted, his coach Olsen said, “He almost won the putt completion, finishing as a runner up. But I told him when he first qualified that he’d already won. Only ten out of 43,000 in his age group make it to Augusta. He was one of them who succeeded at just 15

years old, something that is on every golfers’ bucket list.” Naqica said, “It was so exciting to wander around the Augusta club house. Eat lunch where champions had. It was close to an out-of-body experience, so surreal to actually be there. Cool to represent Columbine High School and Colorado, bring my friends and family along, and fly the Columbine colors in Augusta.” D

Colorado PGA Announces New CEO/Executive Director: Steven Bartkowski

The Colorado Section of the PGA of America welcomes their sixth CEO/Executive Director: Steven Bartkowski. A proven industry leader with over 14 years of experience in golf administration and not-for-profit businesses, Bartkowski joins the Colorado Section after five successful years at the helm of the Western New York Section. Bartkowski remarks, "It is an honor and a privilege to join the Colorado PGA team and lead such a remarkable PGA of America Section. Like many, I share a passion for the game of golf that has given so much back to me in both my personal and professional life. The opportunity to serve the PGA Professionals and work with the many partners of the Section to give back and continue to enhance our sport is humbling, to say the least." Bartkowski got his start in the industry from the prestigious USGA Boatwright Internship program working with the Buffalo District Golf Association. A Bachelor of Science in Sport Management graduate

Steven Bartkowski

of SUNY Cortland in New York, Bartkowski served as the Tournament Director of the Western New York Section. During his three years in the role, he initiated and taught the first PGA H.O.P.E. (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) pro-

gram in the section and created a new event, the Children’s Hospital Pro-Am, which had the largest individual professional purse for a Pro-Am to date. Subsequently, Bartkowski represented the New Jersey Section as the Director of Tournaments and Championships, managing a $800,000 budget and maintaining a strong relationship with the NJ State Golf Association through the co-conducted NJ Senior Open. In 2017, Bartkowski relocated back to his home in Western New York to continue his tenure with the section. As the current Executive Director of the Western New York Section and PGA REACH WNY Foundation, Bartkowski increased section event participation by 13% and increased the total purse amount by 24%. Among many other standout accomplishments, Bartkowski created the PGA Member Growth of the Game Grant Program in collaboration with Allied Golf Associations in 2019 that distributes close to $13,000 annually to PGA Pros serving youth, military and diverse populations.

Pure One Golf forces the brain and eyes to focus at higher levels

Pure One Golf was created out of pure frustration. People are tired of hitting the ball all over the club face and all over the place. There has to be a better way of hitting the ball in the middle of the face other than hitting 1000 balls every week on the driving range. The answer came to the owner of Pure One Golf after asking a senior gentleman in his eighties for advice on how to become a better ball striker. The goal is to hit the ball consistently in the sweet spot...! He stated that a lot of PGA tour players back in the forties and fifties used to cut their club face in half with a hacksaw and beat balls with only half a club face. So why not giving his advice a try?

14

DIVOTMagazine.com l

Pure One Golf used an old 7 iron and grinded it down to half a club face and proceeded to the driving range to hit balls. At first it was difficult, but after hitting a bucket of balls, the ball striking became solid. “The smaller face forces golfers to focus only on a small area of the club face,” commented Dan Bonomo, Founder and CEO of Pure One Golf. He continued, “This allows for golfers to only hit the ball on the sweet spot and ball striking instantly became better.” Transitioning back to hitting his regular clubs to play golf was extremely exciting as the Pure One Golf product made his clubs look so big! Hitting it dead center became much easier! The reduced size, sweet spot only club makes it more consistent to hit the ball solid! This club gets you “hooked” quickly. Distance and consistency improved, and he lowered his handicap from 12 to a 9 in less than 4 months. Pure One Golf has attracted thousands of golfers including amateurs, Jr's, coaches, and hundreds of Tour players worldwide using their products. Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Ian Polter, JB Homes, Charlie Hoffman, and Jim Furyk

Spring/Summer Issue 2022

are pros using the Pro One Golf Clubs. Why? Their club heads are the smallest in the world and are for warmup and practice. They have been proven to force the eyes/brain to focus and concentrate at higher levels. The new P120 52° PW, 36° Midi and 10° Driver make the task more challenging during practice. Transitioning back to your personal clubs allows you to play consistently in the sweet spot. Pure One Golf

users provide feedback that they are hitting more fairways, greens with improved accuracy and consistency. After 12 years Pure One Golf users have also said they saw improvement in ball striking, tempo & distance. In addition, Butch Harmon, Sean Foley, Pete Cowen also have been seen on the driving range using products from Pure One Golf. For more information please visit their website at www.pureonegolf.com. Fiery Resilience

The opening of Coal Creek GC on March 26 gave Greg Ressler reason to smile.

Paul Foley takes a moment to look at the remains of his home just off the 1st tee. By Chris Wheeler DIVOT Contributing Writer As he stepped onto the #1 tee on a perfect spring morning, Paul Foley looked to his left and fixed his eyes upon a scene of complete and utter devastation. “My house was right there,” said the 73year old Louisville resident. “Looking over there is kind of upsetting.” The remains of the home where Foley has lived for the past two decades is just a 9-iron from the 1st tee of Coal Creek Golf Course. It was one of over 1000 Boulder County homes destroyed in the Marshall Fire. In the early afternoon on December 30th the massive blaze, fueled by 100 mph winds, leapt the Boulder Turnpike and stormed into the Louisville golf course. The south section of the Coal Creek Ranch, which lines the first two holes, did not stand a chance. By the end of the day, over 140 homes were destroyed in that subdivision. On a typical morning, Paul is the first golfer to play Coal Creek. But this day is 18

anything but typical. The last time Paul stepped onto this tee box was December 30th, the morning of the fire. Three months later, he is fittingly, the first to play all 18 holes at Coal Creek since the fire. On March 26, the course opened for the first time in nearly three months. “I can’t wait to get off this tee,” said an anxious Foley. Seconds later, a deep swoosh followed by a sharp crack echoed through Coal Creek. Foley’s drive split the fairway of Hole 1. “Nice hit, Paul!” cheered his partners.

Muirfield and St. Andrews. Now, all that remains at Coal Creek Ranch are charred remains of homes and broken dreams. Miraculously, Coal Creek Golf Course was largely spared. Superintendent David Dean said there was minimal damage to the playing surfaces. “There wasn’t a lot of flammable material in the short grass,” Dean said. “Everything was moving so fast, so if it wasn’t easily ignitable, it didn’t burn.” But the native grasses and many of trees surrounding holes 1-5 could not escape the firestorm.

Playing in the foursome with Paul was 75-year old Greg Ressler. The retired home-builder constructed 27 homes in Coal Creek Ranch. Twenty of the homes Ressler built were destroyed by the Marshall Fire. “Who would have thought?” said Ressler as he surveyed the destruction along the first fairway. “We live in the suburbs.” ••••••••••

Last December was not the first time fire burned through a suburban course along the Front Range. Just ten months earlier,

Any golfer will tell you there are few things better that opening your round with a perfect drive. On this day for Paul Foley, hitting the sweet spot took on special meaning. “it’s a return to normalcy,” Paul said. Since the Marshall Fire, life in Louisville has been anything but normal. Coal Creek Ranch was once a golfer’s paradise. Beautiful suburban homes with mountain views were laid out on meandering streets named Turnberry, Troon,

Feature “We’re done with the ‘sorry,’” said Ressler. “It’s time to move on.”

One of the 40 trees that had to be taken down following the fire at Fox Hollow GC. a grass fire swept through Fox Hollow Golf Course in Lakewood. The blaze was an eerie prelude to the inferno that would sweep through Boulder County later in the year. It was February 7, 2021 – Super Bowl Sunday. Head Golf Professional Craig Paryzbok remembers it as a day when Fox Hollow was “bone dry.” Early in the afternoon, a fire began west of the course in Bear Creek State Park. Fueled by 40-50 mph winds, the blaze raced down the Bear Creek Dam spillway toward Fox Hollow. “I could see nothing but smoke and dust,” remembered Craig. “I thought: ‘We’re not going to have a golf course tomorrow.’” Within minutes, Holes 5-9 of the Canyon course were surrounded by flames. The trees and native grasses along the holes became quickly engulfed. But the tee boxes, fairways and greens were spared. “We were lucky,” said Craig. He believes the moisture stored in the soil in the irrigated areas kept the Canyon holes from completely burning. By the time Tampa Bay had won Super Bowl LV, the fire at Fox Hollow had run out of fuel. Paryzbok said 600 acres burned and about 40 trees had to be cut down. “We really got lucky,” said Craig. It was bad, but Craig now knows it could have been worse. Thinking of the Marshall Fire, Paryzbok bluntly says: “It makes me sick to my stomach.” ••••••••••

Thirty-two miles to the north of Fox Hollow, Coal Creek’s Superintendent David Dean also feels lucky. The Marshall Fire largely spared holes 6-18. The clubhouse was smoke-damaged but did not burn. Some of irrigation lines were damaged, but have since been fixed. “We dodged a bullet,” Dean said. “Fortunate for the golf course. Not good for everyone else.” The day after the Marshall Fire, Coal Creek received about 8 inches of snow. And the winter weather kept coming. The months of January and February were the first time in course history that winter conditions kept Coal Creek closed during those months. “It gave us time to assess and repair,” said Head Golf Professional David Baril. Over 150 stately trees on the first five holes were killed. The winter weather gave Maintenance crews time to remove the dead growth.

Though there were warning signs at places like Fox Hollow, no one could have expected the disaster of The Marshall Fire. “It’s in your face. You can’t block it out,” said builder Greg Ressler of the scene along Coal Creek’s 1st hole. “I know a lot of these people.” ••••••••••

On a warm and sunny March morning, it was not a day for sadness, but rather a day for golf. For the first time in nearly three months, golfers could play all 18 holes at Coal Creek. A smile broke out on the face of Greg Ressler.

At Coal Creek, it was a day for playing the sport they love, on the course that gives them hope for better days ahead. For four hours, Ressler, Paul Foley and other Coal Creek golfers could forget about the devastation, the clean-up, the insurance claims and the rebuild. Their only worry this day was the tricky tee shot on Hole 5, the water on Hole 6, and the trees guarding the green on 14. Golf as “therapy” has never been more true than on this sublime morning at Coal Creek. The resiliency of the human spirit is often on full display in the face of tragedy and disaster. So is the resiliency of nature. Just off the green of Hole 2, tiny blades of grass have begun to emerge from the charred soil. “We have survived the 500-year flood, a pandemic and a once-in-a-lifetime fire. We are still here,” said David Baril, Coal Creek’s Head Golf Professional. “I can’t of think of anything that will make us go away.” Chris Wheeler is a photojournalist and documentary producer. He is also a resident of Louisville. D

The Marshall fire is not the first time a natural disaster has swept over Coal Creek Golf Course. In 2013, torrential rains turned the normally placid Coal Creek into a raging river of silt, sediment and trash. The Boulder County course was flooded, cart paths were splintered and irrigation pump stations were destroyed. What is now referred to as a 500-year weather event would keep Coal Creek closed for nearly two years. “One of the things that the golf business teaches you, is you are always going to be impacted by weather,”Baril said. “This fire was weather-related. You are always dealing with things you don’t expect.”

You Don’t Have To Be Good To Be Good To Play With By Jerry Walters DIVOT Contributing Writer

How many have times have you gone to play golf with an incomplete group? The starter sends out a single and immediately his response is, "I'm not very good. I hope you can put up with me." You need to understand this; that part is inconsequential. What does matter is that you're enjoyable to be with for the next 5 hours? So, as your congenial golf host and veteran savvy consultant, here are a few tips for the novices and beginners to assist you in ascertaining golf etiquette, even when you're inept and are truly terrible at golf. After all, if you're playing as a single, you WANT to be included and this primer will aid in searching out other golfers just like yourself.

• Don't be bashful about conceding putts, even on the first green. Since there is obviously no cash being played for in this quickly assembled group, make yourself out to be very generous. Any putt within, oh let's say, 6 feet, might be acceptable to concede for starters. Take it upon yourself

to observe the others in your group. If they're struggling with their putting skills, focus your generosity there. Almost immediately, you'll witness reciprocity from the others in your group which will in turn create a bonding effect.

• If you have some very expensive new golf balls, ask the rest of the foursome if they've tried them. If the answer comes back negative, offer to let them have one or an entire sleeve to sample. Golfers love to try new equipment. Nothing endears you to strangers as generosity, especially when it comes to golf equipment.

• Refrain from jingling the change in your pocket when one of the group is over a crucial putt. The rest of the group can quickly determine that you have enough money to buy the course, but let everyone play without being disturbed by you. Save your change to tip the cart girl.

• Speaking of the beverage cart, offer to buy every time the rolling bar comes around. Nothing adheres you to new

PUTT BETTER, PLAY BETTER! Even if you aren’t able to hit booming drives, you can still compete by putting better. golfers like the willingness to buy a round of cool beverages on a hot day while on the course. And, everyone enjoys those imported beers, but can't always spring for them. Be the bigger person and order up. In fact, check with the attendant to see if she has enough on board to quench your group's thirst until she comes back around.

• Here's another common mistake that all beginners seem to fall victim to. Refrain from using the "early call." Being complimentary about shots hit by the others in your group is a necessity and displays inordinate courtesy, but delay your comments until the ball can be seen in the clear blue sky before belting out your commendation.

• Honors! Many times the tee box is all I play for. Forget the pace of play here. Always be mindful of a special accomplishment on the previous hole, and reward accordingly by stepping aside for the person with the lowest score. Your new-found friends wil take notice and smile with acceptance.

• No one wants to hear how dreadfully you played the previous hole. We were all witness to the errant tee shot that ended up in the lake, the unfair drop you gave yourself, the deplorable conditions in the bunker and the unattended pitch marks and slow green speed that affected your 4 putts. Don't feel obligated to gain approval from the group just because your golf game needs improvement. We all have our own issues.

• Golf course maintenance. Take it upon yourself to notice where the other three in your group land on the green. It's always good manners to volunteer to fix their pitch marks without bringing undo attention to yourself for assisting the group. The same applies for using the sand and seed mixture provided by the maintenance staff. When your playing partners accidentally unearth a divot that you could re-sod our yard with. be sure to pour the compound into the cavernous exposed earth. They will appreciate the kind effort.

• And, after the round is complete, while sitting around with your brand new buddies, here's an important tip. Don't go through each shot that occurred during your round Rather, after you've bought the plate of extreme nachos, filled everyone with more cold foamy expensive beverages, and generously tipped the server, offer to arrange next week's outing. Prepare to use your credit card to secure the tee time, and don't be a pest about asking to be repaid. Be secure in knowing that you've made new friends and that you don't have to be good to be good to play with. Second Golf Course Underway for Quivira Los Cabos Following the incredible success of its first Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, Quivira to expand and elevate golf experience at Land’s End on the Baja Peninsula

Quivira Golf Club #5 & #6 Los Cabos, Mexico (Jan. 11, 2022) –Situated at the tip of the Baja Peninsula and just 10 minutes from downtown Cabo San Lucas—in a dramatic setting marked by windswept dunes, sheer cliffs and lush desert foothills—Jack Nicklaus, golf’s greatest champion and globally acclaimed golf course designer, crafted a world-class layout that redefined the Cabo golf experience when the Quivira’s Golf Club opened in 2014. With Quivira Golf Club having garnered nearly every design accolade the golf and travel industry has to offer, Nicklaus has returned to create a second course at Quivira Los Cabos—the destination’s finest luxury development. Groundbreaking for the Club’s second Jack Nicklaus Signature Course is expected

to take place by fourth quarter 2022. Quivira’s second course will expand the resort and residential community’s golf offering to accommodate the increased demand, resulting from the growth of the development, including ultra-exclusive, recently launched projects such as the St. Regis Resort & Residences; the exclusive new real estate community, Old Lighthouse Golf & Ocean Club; and the Alvar hillside condominiums. “The first golf course at Quivira is a spectacular layout playing across a remarkable piece of property,” Nicklaus said. “Now, I am excited that design is well underway on the second course at Quivira, which should be stunning and equally as spectacular. I hope golfers who

play the second course will enjoy the views, the quality of golf, and the challenge.” While the routing plan for Quivira’s second course is in its final stages, it is anticipated that Mr. Nicklaus and his design team will create another world-class layout on this exceptional piece of land. Situated in the northwest area of the 1,850-acre development, several of the holes on the new course will meander through rolling desert foothills and expansive valleys, interlaced by winding arroyos. Quivira’s second Jack Nicklaus Signature Course will provide a different challenge but one that should mirror the high quality associated with the existing golf experience. The southern portion of the new layout will feature panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the westernmost point of the Sea of Cortez, which swells with breaching whales during the winter months. On the interior side, tall distant peaks will serve as dramatic backdrops for several holes. For additional information, resort reservations, or tee times access the web site at www.quiviraloscabos.com/golf or call 1800-990-8250.

Grassroots program proves that golf is more than just a game

It’s 2005 and Jack F (he wants no recognition) has just returned from a visit with family and friends living on the Pine Ridge Reservation, in South Dakota. He was saddened to see the overwhelming poverty and lack of things to keep young minds and bodies active. He felt compelled to DO SOMETHING! DO SOMETHING, indeed! Jack’s love of golf and desire to help these impoverished kiddos created one of Saddleback Golf Course’s greatest grassroots programs in the country. Jack, armed with $10,000 of his own money, approached Lanna and Whitey O’Malley (owners of Saddleback) to purchase junior golf club sets for children ranging from ages 6-16 years old. Lanna and Whitey were so moved by this kind gesture that they offered all the sets at their cost. Since then, Jack has been organizing a ‘club drive’ once or twice every year. The clubs are collected at Saddleback and sent to the reservation by the truckload. The last club drive in 2021 filled a large truck and a 2-car enclosed trailer. “There wasn’t room for even one more ball in the trailer when they shoved the doors shut” said Jack F. In 2021, the club drive expanded to another

Reservation in Oklahoma. Jack refuses to take cash donations, saying “it muddies the water when you take cash”. Jack continued, “The club drives are a call to golfers to clean out their unwanted and unused golf equipment and donate them to a great cause.” The donations also include balls, push carts, golf shoes, gloves, and the like. The donations received over the years have been truly heartwarming and in many cases included newly purchased items that had never been used. Many of the junior sets donated were still in their boxes, waiting to be open.

A little background... the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation has the lowest per capita income in the country and ranks as THE POOREST county in the United States. The children are horribly forgotten. “With a school dropout rate of over 70%, these kiddos need a reason to finish, at the very least, high school. If they get into golf, it may be a catalyst to keep them in school.” said Jack. Other really sad facts about the Pine Ridge Nation is that they have a 150% higher teen suicide rate than the U.S. as a whole, 58% of grandparents are raising grandchildren, 85% of Lakota families are

affected by alcoholism, and 50% of their adult population (over 40) have diabetes. On a positive note and one of the favorite stories from the program is from one young girl who would write by hand a letter every month. Her letters began with a simple thank-you. The next couple letters outlined the love/hate relationship she had with the game. “At that point you knew you had a golf convert.” commented Jack. The next several letters were all about the little golf course she carved out on her desolate bit of prairie and that she was frustrated that the boys were better than her. The letters following that described how she was starting to beat the boys and she was the best ‘chipper’ in her group of friends. Her final letters reflected that she had become better than her male counterparts and would probably enjoy this game for the rest of her life. It should make golfers rejoice that this girl may have been saved because of one small act of kindness from a fellow golfer. In 2020, this little grassroots program produced a state champion golfer from the reservation. The first in its history. If you needed any further proof as to the value of this game we love and play, let this feel good story serve that purpose. D

Folsom Field to Host Topgolf Live Event This Summer Topgolf Live Stadium Tour To Come To Boulder June 29 -July 2 The University of Colorado’s Folsom Field will host one of the more unique events in its 98-year history, as it will be home to the Topgolf Live Stadium Tour for four days this summer, school officials announced Tuesday. The immersive Topgolf Live experience will come to Folsom for four days, June 29 through July 2. The stadium tour allows players to enjoy a one-of-a-kind opportunity to tee it up inside some of the country’s most iconic stadiums, hitting golf balls at on-field targets placed between 60 and 140 yards from the tee box. Toptracer technology accurately traces the flight path of the golf balls, instantly scoring every shot in an interactive, in-stadium game, designed for all skill levels. “We’re extremely excited to be able to host this unique event in Folsom Field,” CU athletic director Rick George said. “Folsom has hosted games, concerts, graduations and even beach volleyball in its history, but this will definitely be a new experience, one I think our fans of all ages can enjoy.” Tickets go on sale on Monday, April 25 on http://topgolflive.com/. Tee times are reserved in one-hour increments. Prices start at $80 for player tickets and $40 for students. With the initial on sale date, only full bay reservations will be made available. Experience tickets, which are available for $175, include a locker room tour, Folsom Field sideline picture opportunity, ac-

cess to drink tickets, a limited-edition Topgolf Live hat provided by Black Clover, a complimentary Topgolf Lifetime Membership and a game play voucher, redeemable at any U.S. Topgolf location, excluding

Topgolf Las Vegas. Other venues currently scheduled to host a stop on the Topgolf Live Stadium Tour in 2022 lineup include Jordan-Hare Stadium (Auburn University) and Beaver

Stadium (Penn State). Twelve stadiums hosted a Topgolf Live event in 2021. For more information regarding the Topgolf Live Stadium Tour, please visit https://topgolflive.com. D

Have You Been Working On Your Fitness During the Winter Months?

By Dee Tidwell DIVOT Contributing Writer

B) Single leg lift- lift one leg at a time making sure to stay in balance and keep hips still

Well, there is one thing I know about you and this last winter, you probably didn’t get to play much golf. I also know that you probably haven’t been working on your game much like you should over the off season.

Knowing that, my question to you is, “have you been working on your fitness during the winter months? I hope the answer to that is “yes,” but unfortunately that doesn’t seems to be the norm for most golfers.

One major theme I stress during the off season for golfers is Mobility, which is defined as, “optimal joint range of motion combined with proper muscle flexibility.” This means that mobility allows for the generation of elastic energy and therefore establishes a base for efficient power production!

Now, since most of you go to work and sit at a desk all day, you will automatically become “mobility challenged!’ I see it show up everyday while assessing golfers and it is one of the biggest power leaks and contributors to pain!

So here a few different mobility-based exercises that you can use to help you gain mobility in the thorax (rib cage) and hips, as well as stability in the core. These would also be a great warm up prior to practicing or playing.

Caution: Please be careful in executing these moves.

Perform 1 to 3 sets of these exercises, every other day and if ANYTHING is painful at all…stop immediately!

Overhead Deep Squat (6-15 reps per set) Place your heels on top of a dowel rod/ Overhead Deep Squat

C) Butt ups- lift hips up to ceiling, then down to ground and repeat. Standing Arm Turns with Tubing

broom stick or two small dumbbells, (be careful not to stand to far back on the stick or it will roll out from under you!). Grab a golf club or a dowel rod and place it on top of your head and create 90-degree angles in your elbows, then press the bar straight over your head. Draw your belly button toward your spine without changing your spinal angle and slowly begin to lower yourself into the deep squat. Try to get as deep as you can without your torso or stick moving forward. If it does, stop at the point you begin to change your form from my picture, and make that your stopping point. Keep working on achieving what I am showing you till you get it!

Swiss Ball Trio’s

Standing Arm Turns with Tubing (8-15 each arm, each set) (Squat Position) Attach a band about chest high to a door or something stationary (or better yet, use a cable machine). Hold both handles straight out in front of you (if you use a cable machine, it will be with just one handle) with both elbows locked and get into a good stable golf posture. Stabilizing your lower body, begin to pull the tubing back with your right arm. Make a full shoulder turn and try to get the tubing back behind you as far as possible, keeping the arm straight and turning the hips and torso. Return and repeat with the other arm.

Swiss Ball Trio’s Lay on your back on the floor and place lower legs on top of the ball and arms out

You’ve got new clubs, now get your body moving better for your best game yet! Our members experience:

• Longer Drives • Greatly reduced handicaps • Greater accuracy in their game • Better consistency in their swing • A loss of 20-30 pounds • Playing without pain

The History of Golf Lakewood... Fox Hollow and Homestead Golf Courses

Image: Homestead Golf Course The City of Lakewood’s City Council approved the Fox Hollow golf course project in late 1989 and commissioned renowned course designer Dennis Griffiths to create something special for the city. But the path to completing the city’s first public golf course was complicated. At a public meeting, members of the local equestrian community expressed concerns about the compatibility of horseback riding and golf. To address these concerns, Griffiths relocated bridle paths to the perimeter of the new golf course. During the permitting review and approval process, three groups expressed strong opposition to the proposed golf course. The grassroots organization composed of local residents, Friends of Bear Creek, plus the Sierra Club and Denver Audubon Society protested the plan based upon environmental concerns and filed a lawsuit in federal court under the National Environmental Policy Act. After a court hearing in January 1992, a federal judge ruled in favor of the city, allowing Lakewood to proceed with its plan for Fox Hollow Golf Course. The course features three nine-hole options: “the Meadow” located along Bear Creek; “the Canyon” constructed along a ridge and into a gulch surrounded by native plants; and “the Links” situated on higher elevation grasslands. Given the public’s concerns, Griffiths and the city made every effort to maintain and to enhance the environmental integrity of the park. It was also one of the first courses in the nation designed to be

completely accessible to golfers with disabilities. Fox Hollow Golf Course opened in August 1993. Taking in the natural beauty of the finished product, Head Golf Professional Craig Parzybok remarked, "I don't think getting golfers here is going to be hard.” Project Manager Bill Jewell added, “We’re really pleased the way things turned out. Obviously, we went through a heck of a lot to get it done, and I think we've got a great end product.” He was pleased the city had “satisfied the golf demand and the environmental concerns." In 1994, Golf Digest named Fox Hollow Golf Course the 2nd best new golf course in the nation, and it has been recognized nationally as a top public golf course. Designed to complement the Fox Hollow Golf Course, Homestead Golf Course broke ground in October 2000 and opened in 2002. Located on land once part of the Fehringer Ranch, it was designed to resemble a working cattle ranch. This includes rustic tee markers, log fencing and a cart “barn.” A windmill was also placed on the 18-hole, Par 65 course. It was designed as a championship short course and has an elevation change of over 200 feet. Homestead has received recognition of its own and has been named a top course for women and a top short course in the country. Over the years, both golf courses have won several awards for environmental efforts including the Environmental Leaders in Golf Award and Audubon Cooperative

Sanctuary Program awards for providing a sanctuary for wildlife. Despite the pandemic that has affected so many lives around the world, Fox Hollow and Homestead Golf Courses turned challenging years into their most successful to date in 2020 and 2021 with the support of a growing golf community that came outside to enjoy the great outdoors and the game of golf they love. Fox Hollow Golf Course offers three nine-hole configurations, each with its own unique character, delivering 27 championship holes full of vistas, water challenges, wildlife and a protected natural environment. Five sets of tees challenge golfers of every ability on the nationally

recognized course that was one of the first in the nation designed to be completely accessible to golfers of all abilities. Fox Hollow is located at 13410 W. Morrison Road., Lakewood, CO 80228 As a short championship golf course, Homestead Golf Course creates an accessible bridge between championship-style play and a shorter overall course length. This links-style course, with four sets of tees and two unique nine-hole personalities, can create memorable challenges for even the most seasoned golfers. Homestead Golf Course is located at 11500 W. Hampden Ave., Lakewood, CO 80227 For more information and to book a tee time, visit the new GolfLakewood.com. D

City of Lakewood launches a new golf website Just in time for the 2022 golf season, the City of Lakewood is thrilled to announce the launch of its new golf website, GolfLakewood.com, to provide an improved visitor experience for golfers looking to take a swing at Lakewood’s popular Fox Hollow and Homestead golf courses. The new site showcases the beauty of Lakewood’s two courses with a clean, uncluttered design and improved functionality to make it easier for golfers from around the region to access the golf courses and book tee times. Interactive features of the site include course flyover and drone footage to highlight the spectacular
