What is a PPO, or Personal Protection Order in Singapore?

Part VII of the Women's Charter allows for the issuance of a Personal Protection Order in Singapore (PPO). The Expedited Order (EO) and the Domestic Exclusion Order (DEO) enhance it (DEO). The PPO, EO, and DEO are all designed to be used as court orders to stop family violence.

Two elements must be proven in order to successfully apply for a PPO: A family member has been subjected to or is likely to be subjected to family violence, and a PPO is required to safeguard that family member.

What constitutes domestic violence?

"Family violence" is defined as any of the following acts, as described in section 64 of the Women's Charter: • Intentionally or knowingly putting, or attempting to put, a family member in danger; • Injuring a family member by an act that is known or should have been known will result in injury.

• Wrongfully confining or restraining a family member without his will, or persistently harassing a family member with the intent to cause or knowing that it is likely to cause suffering.

What is the procedure for obtaining a Personal Protection Order in Singapore?

Your attorney will file a petition with the family court to stop further occurrences of domestic violence. If the court determines that family violence has occurred or is likely to occur on the balance of probabilities, an order to protect the complainant will be issued.

Who is eligible for a Personal Protection Order in Singapore?

Singapore residents, all persons in Singapore, and all persons domiciled in Singapore are eligible for the PPO, EO, and DEO. Members of Muslim families in Singapore are included.

If you are at least 21 years old, you can file a PPO application to protect yourself, your minor children, or an incapacitated family member from familial violence.

You can also apply if you are under 21 and married or have previously been married (for example, if the abuser is your former spouse).

How Long Does a PPO Take to Get? If the respondent agrees with the complaint, obtaining a PPO could take as little as two months.

Otherwise, it could take 3 to 6 months for the case to be heard in court and a PPO granted.
