MeichenisaChinesear�stcurrentlypursuinganMAinceramicsattheRoyalCollegeof ArtinLondon,withplanstograduateinJulyofthisyear.Shepreviouslystudiedceramics duringherBAattheHubeiIns�tuteofFineArtsinChina,whereshegraduatedwith dis�nc�onandwasawardedtheOutstandingGradua�onWorkAward.Hercurrent worksexplorethevitalityofmarginalizednon-humanbeingsfromtheconsequences a�ertransgenesis.Meichencreatesmutatedshapesthatallowviewerstoexperiencea senseofunfamiliaritywithfamiliarlivingbeings.Drawingonherchildhoodexperiences withnature,Meichenbelievesthatnatureisnotwhathumansthinkandshouldnotbe controlled.Yet,especiallywhensheapproachesthecoastandhearstheloudsoundof wavescrashing,shefeelsoverwhelmed.Andsheclimbsamountainandcannotseethe base;shefeelsasthoughshecouldbeswallowedbyanabyssinthenextsecond. Meichen'sapproachtomakingisexperimental,involvingthecombina�onofdifferent fragmentsthroughoutherworks.Shefirstcreatesabstractformsofplantsandcreatures separatelywhentheclayiswet,thencombinesthemintonewformsa�ertheyhave dried.A�erfiring,sheplacesallthefragmentsaroundher.Meichenalsoaimstocombine herceramicpartswithdifferentconcrete,conveyingasenseofthepowerofmutated beingstobreakthroughhumanlivingspace.
