UNITY STAR Summer 2009 Training Edition The Office of Diversity Initiatives provides a variety of FREE workshops and training experiences for the UCF faculty, staff, and students. Workshop: ABCs of Diversity (DIV008) Facilitator: Barbara Thompson Date: Thursday 06/04/2009 Time: 1:30-4:30 PM Location: Research Pavilion, Suite 169 Description: Human diversity impacts each of us on a daily basis. Gaining an understanding of differences and similarities is essential for effective functioning in today’s work environment. This workshop focuses on how stereotypes and biases can get in the way when creating a diverse and inclusive space for all employees. Participants develop ABC action plans for enhancing awareness and appreciation for diversity.

Description: What is sexism? How has the role of women changed over the last three generations? Can a woman truly balance the requirements of career and motherhood? Is that the real Motherlode? What about women who are not married or have no children?

Do their colleagues view and treat them differently? This guided facilitation will explore the challenges and possible solutions in the workplace facing women and exactly what happens when Superwoman forgets her superhero cape.

Workshop: Mind Your Mouth & Fix Your Face (DIV043) Facilitator: Michael Freeman Date: Thursday 06/11/2009 Time: 2:30-4:30 PM Location: Student Union, Room 221 Description: Sometimes we not only say things that get us in trouble, but our non-verbal expressions, especially those carried all over our faces, leave little doubt as to what we are thinking. This humorous workshop examines both verbal and non-verbal communication we observe and use when we are “communicating for understanding.” The workshop will help participants to recognize some of their own needs around “minding and fixing” in developing a plan to help manage how they communicate.

This four-part program focuses on the legal, ethical, and practical issues organizations face in this dynamic new environment while demonstrating how we can use human diversity to maximize competence and performance.

Workshop: Allies Advance (DIV033) Facilitator: Michael Freeman Date: Thursday 06/18/2009 Time: 9:30 AM-12:00 Noon Location: Rosen Campus, Library Instruction Room 120F Description: Learn about issues affecting GLBT people, homophobia, and heterosexism, and the benefits and responsibilities of being an Ally.

Workshop: DOTS: Understanding Your “Hidden” Biases (DIV031) Facilitator: Barbara Thompson Date: Friday 06/19/2009 Time: 2:30-4:30 PM Location: Research Pavilion, Suite 169 Description: In order to appreciate, respect, and value others, it is important to recognize that our life experiences and the individuals in our lives have influenced our thoughts and feelings regarding the people present in our worlds. In this workshop, participants are guided through an activity that allows them to discover biases that may exist “in their heads.” Further, the session facilitates understanding of how these views impact the ways in which we relate to one another.

Workshop: Facilitating Difficult Discussions (DIV017) Facilitator: Michael Freeman Date: Wednesday 06/24/2009 Time: 2:30-4:30 PM Location: Research Pavilion, Suite 169 Description: When bigoted comments are made in the classroom, their impact can be significantly detrimental to the ongoing educational process. Additionally, faculty may have to cover topics and subjects, such as race or sexual orientation, which may trigger remarks that others may find offensive. This workshop examines some strategies and perspectives on how to conduct these difficult discussions in the classroom.

Workshop: Illusion of Inclusion (DIV021) Facilitator: Michael Freeman Date: Tuesday 07/07/2009 Time: 2:30-4:30 PM Location: Student Union, Room 221 Description: What does it mean to be inclusive? Is it something you can feel, or does it exist when certain diversity objectives have been met? This workshop explores the critical elements in building organizational inclusion and discusses how to determine whether their implementation creates real and sustainable change or merely reflects “the illusion of inclusion.”

Workshop: Inclusive Communication (DIV053) Facilitator: Barbara Thompson Date: Friday 07/17/2009 Time: 1:30-4:30 PM Location: Research Pavilion, Suite 169 Description: This workshop identifies some common mistakes made when communicating about age, class, disabilities, ethnicity, gender, language, looks, race, religion, and sexual orientation. It also highlights words, phrases, and behaviors that can enhance the process of communicating about and across various dimensions of influence.

Workshop: Interrupting Bigotry (DIV004) Facilitator: Michael Freeman Date: Monday 07/20/2009 Time: 10:00 AM-12:00 Noon Location: Research Pavilion, Suite 169 Description: We all have had the experience of not knowing what to do when someone makes a joke or comment that is offensive.

Do we confront them? Ignore them? What should we do? How do we challenge ourselves on our own hidden prejudices? This workshop offers suggestions about what to do in such circumstances. It also includes role-playing of some common, everyday situations.

Workshop: Communicating Across Cultures (DIV044) Facilitator: Barbara Thompson Date: Friday 07/31/2009 Time: 1:30-4:30 PM Location: Research Pavilion, Suite 169 Description: The ability to prevent misunderstandings through effective cross-cultural communication is an important skill in today’s world. This session introduces the three basic components of any communication. Further, it dramatically illustrates 12 common causes of verbal miscommunication across cultures including conventions for courtesy, degree of assertiveness, accents, and hot buttons. Finally, the crucial role of body language in communication is discussed. NOTE: This session combines material from Open Heart Dialogue and More Than Mere Words. If these sessions have been attended, this workshop will be redundant.
