2014 Diversity Week Student Poster Contest Rules and Specifications Theme: “Remember and Reflect – The Civil Rights Act of 1964” The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was signed into law on July 2, 1964 by President Lyndon Johnson.

The Act bans discrimination based on “color, race, religion, sex and national origin” in employment practices and public accommodations. The Act is one of the major legislative achievements of the African-American Civil Rights Movement, a social movement characterized by campaigns of civil resistance and nonviolent protest. Forms of protest included boycotts such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955-1956), “sit-ins” such as the Greensboro sit-ins (1960), marches such as the Selma to Montgomery marches in Alabama (1965), and a wide range of other nonviolent activities.

The UCF Office of Diversity Initiatives (ODI) invites you to be part of the activities commemorating 50 years since the signing of the Civil Rights Act by designing a poster for Diversity Week 2014. Submissions must be original creations that represent a combination of the events of the Civil Rights Movement and the signing of the Civil Rights Act. Submissions will be reviewed for originality by a panel comprised of UCF Faculty and Central Florida design experts. Decisions of the contest judges are final. To participate, please review the required specifications, and complete the attached form. For examples of prior years’ posters, please visit the Diversity Week page on the Office of Diversity Initiatives’ website at www.diversity.ucf.edu/diversity_week.asp, and click on the Posters Display icon.

Awards and Recognitions: • First Place - $500, mass reproduction and distribution of the poster in the UCF and Central Florida communities, recognition on the ODI website and in the Diversity Breakfast Program • Top three runners-up - recognition on the ODI website and in the Diversity Breakfast Program Top 15 posters - exhibited on the display wall on the second (main) floor of the John C. Hitt Library during October 2014.

• The Office of Diversity Initiatives will announce the awards and recognition via our website (www.diversity.ucf.edu) on April 15, 2014.

Required Specifications: • Color poster, final size 18” x 24” • High Resolution Jpg, or Print-ready PDF file • A combination of images, type/text reflective of the Civil Rights Movement and the Civil Rights Act • Must include (to be provided by the Office of Diversity Initiatives): • The Office of Diversity Initiatives’ Unit Identifier • The Diversity Week 2014 Theme – see above • The Diversity Week dates (save the space) • Participating students must be the sole creator and copyright owner of the work/poster they are submitting or, if anything is incorporated into the work/poster by the participating student that is owned by a third party (including copyright ownership to such materials), a Third Party Permission Form, signed by the copyright owner MUST accompany the submitted poster.

• If a participating student infringes on someone else’s copyright by incorporating work that someone else owns the copyright to without obtaining the owner’s permission first, the student will be disqualified from the contest and also hereby indemnifies and holds harmless UCF, including its Office of Diversity Initiatives, the UCF Board of Trustees, the State of Florida and the Florida Board of Governors and their respective employees, agents, officers, volunteers and servants from any and all liabilities, responsibilities, claims, damages, causes of action and/or losses arising out of or related to the student’s infringement.

• This contest is subject to all applicable federal, state, and municipal laws.

• The UCF Office of Diversity Initiatives also reserves the right to disqualify submissions that are deemed inappropriate or offensive by the UCF Office of Diversity Initiatives, at its sole discretion.

• UCF and the UCF Office of Diversity Initiatives reserve the right to withdraw or terminate this contest at any time without prior notice.
