At last count, Frederick County has a population of nearly 300.000 people and an estimated 1.9 million tourists a year, according to statistics. That boils down to a lot of people to feed, something the area’s restaurants, pubs and cafes provide in spectacular fashion. Pictured above is Modern Asia, 1306 W. Patrick St., Frederick.
Sushi Nomu, 4969 Westview Drive, showcases a blend of traditional sushi and innovative sushi rolls, prepared with attention to detail. Also a menu highlight are the restaurant’s ramen dishes and small plates for diners to share the deliciousness.
We continue our tradition of presenting the top food and drink offerings in Frederick county. Whether it’s a quick lunch or a special occasion dinner, you’ll find plenty of suggestions on these pages.
It’s no secret that if you want great food, come to Frederick, whether it’s grabbing a quick lunch, lingering over brunch on the weekend or having a night out on the town with dinner created by a celebrity chef.
The current success of the culinary scene comes on the heels of some unforgettable eateries from the past, starting with the dining room of the former Francis Scott Key Hotel at the corner of Court and West Patrick streets in Downtown Frederick.
In its prime, the hotel was the place for high society occasions as well as family meals, offering dishes that reflected American tastes at the time, such as cream of chicken soup, parsley potatoes, fruit cocktail and Waldorf salad. A menu for a special New Year’s dinner featured consume, roasted Maryland turkey with oyster dressing, French peas, mashed turnips, creamed hominy and hearts of lettuce with Russian dressing. Desserts were nothing like what we have on today’s menus, with offerings of mince pie, plum pudding and Charlotte Russe, a creamy concoction of mousse and either cake or lady fingers and a splash of whiskey.
Today, The FSK Hotel has been transformed into apartments, but the first floor still offers food and beverages with The Perfect Blend coffee shop, usually filled with clientele from the courthouse across
the street or those residing on the upper floors. The café even has a piano for anyone feeling the urge to sit down and play.
Having a Downtown hotel with a spectacular restaurant was resurrected with the recent opening of the Wye Oak Tavern in the Visitation Hotel, 211 E. Church St. The kitchen is helmed by celebrity chefs and brothers Bryan and Michael Voltaggio and features Mid-Atlantic fare including dry-aged steaks, handmade pasta, fresh seafood and local game meats.
Bryan Voltaggio first came on the Frederick restaurant scene with the opening of VOLT, 228 N. Market St., a place that was decidedly different from other local restaurants with its multiple courses
and innovative food pairings. Thatcher & Rye replaced VOLT and was followed by the Ordinary Hen. The restaurant is now 7th Sister Restaurant, the name referring to the sisters who once occupied the 1890s house that still maintains its historic charm.
Turning Point Inn, Urbana, a popular destination spanning 20 years before closing in 2002, also took advantage of its beautiful surroundings inside of a historic home, rivaled only by the kitchen’s fabulous lobster bisque.
And speaking of charming buildings, local restaurant history wouldn’t be complete without the mention of the former Gabriel’s French Provincial Inn, Ijamsville. Gabriel’s closed in 2010 after a run that started in 1968 when Guy Gabriel bought the property, later selling it in 1998 to the DeLawder family.
In addition to fine dining, the inn was noted for its beautiful location in the country with gardens and a building that was once a sanitarium, opened in 1896 “for the care and treatment of nervous and mental disease of women.” We’re suggesting that it could have all been solved by sitting down to a fabulous meal, and a glass of wine, gazing out at the flowers.
Frederick is fortunate to be close enough to the Chesapeake Bay to take advantage of the availability of fresh seafood. Favorite seafood places include Liberty Road Seafood and Steak, 10524 Liberty Road, operating for more than 40 years, JB Seafood, 308 Main St., Myersville, with its motto, “from the shore to your door,” and Ragin’ Reef, 506 E. Church St., a Maryland seafood place with a slightly Southern twist.
Avery’s Maryland Grille, 9009 Baltimore Road, has daily and all-you-can-eat specials and strives to “serve it up Maryland style.” They are located in
the spot where the landmark Jug Bridge Seafood operated for many years, including during the first George Bush administration when the president and his entourage stopped in for dinner.
Frederick’s First Pizza
Ernest “Ernie” Nasher, who owned and operated Ernie’s Italian Kitchen at 1818 Rosemont Ave. for 40 years and lived to be 101, is credited with bringing pizza to Frederick. According to The Frederick News-Post
a native of Austria, came to the United States on vacation with his family in 1913 and was forced to stay when World War I broke out.
Nasher moved from New York to Frederick in 1938 and worked in a dress shop. But dining became his calling, and he opened the Pizza Shop on East Patrick Street, thought to be Frederick’s first pizza restaurant. Thanks in large part to Hood College students, it took off. In 1967, Nasher opened Ernie’s Italian Kitchen with he and his daughter, Rosalind, running it until it was sold in 1995. The restaurant is now home to Fetch Thrift Shop.
With a fried chicken reputation second to none, and a finely chopped coleslaw with the perfect combination of celery salt, vinegar and mayonnaise on the side, Watson’s Carry Out on West Patrick
Watson family moved the business a number of years ago to 4000 Jefferson Pike, Jefferson, where everything tastes just like you remember.
At 489 W. Patrick St., near the old Watson’s, is another Frederick landmark, Gladchuk Brothers, where you can enjoy classics including homestyle pot roast, pork schnitzel and deep-fried Chesapeake Bay oysters that come in an order large enough to take leftovers home for lunch the next day. Gladchuk’s is also known for its house-made desserts, from lemon meringue pie to bread pudding.
While we’re in the neighborhood, let’s stop at China Garden, 506 W. Patrick St., located in a spot once occupied by everything from a burger joint to an ice cream parlor. It wasn’t until China Garden moved in that the location stopped being a game of revolving restaurants. It has been operating for 37 years, curtailed several years ago by a fire, but back better than ever.
tional Frederick favorite with steaks that are handcut and trimmed daily, and a chef that uses fresh produce from the restaurant garden. The owners are involved in a green initiative including recycling, food composting and using electricity produced 100 percent by wind energy.
As West Patrick becomes better known as the Golden Mile, the Barbara Fritchie Restaurant, home of taste-tempters such as turkey dinners, country ham and a revolving case with chocolate custard and banana cream to a variety of fruit pies—all homemade—is still being lamented after closing on Jan. 1, 2018, after 107 years. It was turned into a used car business.
The Premier Food Truck
With Frederick’s proliferation in recent years of breweries, distilleries and vineyards, a natural off-
Further up West Patrick Street, at 996, you can’t miss the Red Horse Steakhouse with its iconic horse statue standing out front.
Locally owned and operated since 1968, the current owners are brothers Ken and Roy Bromfield, who started out at the restaurant when they were in high school. The restaurant continues to be a tradi-
from lobster rolls to grilled cheese sandwiches, barbecue and burgers, as well as ethnic fare. But before all those trucks, there was a converted school bus, painted brown, with a tiny kitchen inside and a few seats, known as Scotty’s Bus. No sign was plastered on the side; the bus was that well known.
Raymond Scott, who died in 2020 at the age of 84, started his cooking career in the late 1950s working
with others, but in 1961 went out on his own, equipped with a hot dog sauce that was the stuff of legends. According to local lore, a Fort Detrick scientist once tested a smear of it in the lab to try and unlock the recipe because Scotty refused to give it out. He did give out advice, however, saying, “Good food is not cheap. Cheap food is not good.”
To many long-time residents, the former Province Restaurant, 131 N. Market St., stands out for its seafood salad, well-crafted entrees and a dessert tray passed around by the staff that was impossible to ignore. The best seats were at the back of the house where a beautiful garden could be enjoyed through floor-to-ceiling windows.
Downtown, especially the Market Street corridor, has had a series of various restaurants over the decades. Cacique, 26 N. Market, home to a Spanish and Mexican menu, once served Italian food as DiFrancesco’s and before that was a French restaurant, Chez Maggie. The Tasting Room, 101 N. Market St., with its European cuisine, was once Kyoko’s, a Japanese restaurant and at one time there was a Cajun place called the Louisiana Purchase dishing out gumbo and jambalaya.
Mainstays on that stretch of street include Brewer’s Alley, 124 N. Market St., Frederick County’s original brewpub, serving distinctive brews and culinary creations. Snagging a table on the patio guarantees amazing people watching.
Turn the corner off of Market Street to 111 E. Patrick St. and Cucina Massi, where embellishments over the years include a bar worthy of any gathering after work, as well as a back patio that makes you think you’re in Italy. Well-made cocktails and rave-inducing food are standard in this restaurant that for years was previously known as Nido’s.
The pubs in the neighborhood are all reminiscent of the classic TV show Cheers, “where everyone knows your name.” Wags, 24 S. Market St., located in a cozy basement space, has won so many accolades for serving the best burger in town that they’ve stopped counting. A classic Irish pub can be found at both Magoo’s Pub & Eatery, 1-A W. 2nd St., or Bushwaller’s, 209 N. Market St. But don’t wait for St. Patrick’s Day; there’s fun, good food, drink and sometimes an Irish band, to be had at any time. And the staff at Magoo’s even wears kilts.
A nod to the Irish also needs to be paid to the former Shamrock Restaurant in Thurmont that closed in December 2018 after 57 years. It was a favorite for locals as well as travelers on U.S. 15, causing streams of tears when the owners retired.
Sunny Side Up
Breakfast is said to be the most important meal of the day and through the years local cooks and chefs have
obliged. When you were especially ravenous, you might have headed to Thurmont’s Cozy Restaurant’s buffet with all manner of deliciousness, including the crispiest scrapple around. The Cozy embraced its proximity to the presidential retreat, Camp David, entertaining journalists and government folks and putting together a museum at the site. It closed in 2014 after 85 years in
business, but there’s still the nearby Mountain Gate Family Restaurant that serves breakfast anytime.
The Village Restaurant, a Downtown landmark since the 1940s, operated on North Market Street, famous for its light and fluffy pancakes, omelets and other breakfast foods, as well as a friendly waitstaff. The Village relocated to East Patrick Street in a spot now occupied by Café Nola, a charming bistro with breakfast and lunch options.
Breakfast starts at 7:30 a.m. at the Airways Inn at Frederick Municipal Airport, 310 Aviation Way, with a bevy of egg selections, home fries, pancakes and waffles, plus eggs benedict. Just as good as the food and friendly service is the location on the edge of the tarmac where you can watch planes take off and land.
If trains are more to your liking, there’s Beans in the Belfry, 122 W. Potomac St., in the railroad city of Brunswick. Located in a 1910 former church building, the café serves organic fair-trade coffee along with its freshly prepared breakfast, lunch and dinner. They are
towpath along the Potomac River.
Time Marches On
The Frederick food scene over the past few decades has undergone a dramatic shift, welcoming new foods from around the world. We now have several
restaurants serving African dishes, including Jollof on Point, 452 Prospect Blvd., and countless sources for Thai food as well as other Asian eateries. We have Hinzi’s Kitchen 503 N. East St., a Pakistani restaurant, and Gogi Go Korean BBQ at 1003 W. Patrick St. We have Indian restaurants and vegetarian restaurants such as Hippy Chick Hummus, 237 N. Market St. Middle Eastern fare is available for local enjoyment and even our smaller communities have places for Italian, Asian and Mexican food.
As we celebrate this abundance, we continue to fondly recall the unique places of the past, like the Peter Pan Inn in Urbana with its peacocks roaming the property and its art-deco furnishings. Folks would drive up from Washington, D.C., for the famous Sunday dinners at the restaurant that graced us from the 1920s to the 1980s.
The Dan-Dee Restaurant, located on old U.S. 40 at the edge of Frederick, was a throw back to a time when family style was all the rage. The Dan-Dee is especially remembered for its relish tray that was presented prior to the main course, complete with pickled beets and other goodies to whet your appetite. Across the county in New Market was Mealey’s Restaurant, another landmark to history as well as the go-to spot for special occasions.
Perhaps winning the award for the best name was the former Chat and Chew restaurant on East Patrick Street with its stuffed pork chops, meatloaf and mashed potatoes, along with a Christmas tree that stood lighted in the dining room all year long.

IL FORNO PIZZERIA
Best Thing to Come Out of a 900-Degree Oven
Voted BOF Pizza 9 years in a row! With more than a quarter of a century of making people happy with their pizza, Il Forno is definitely doing it right with a constantly evolving menu and consistently friendly service. Using wood-burning ovens—they had to add a second one when demand went through the roof—Il Forno uses a tangy, slightly sweet tomato sauce made in-house paired with a hand-tossed crust that emerges from the oven light and crispy with just the proper amount of char. Gluten-free and cauliflower crusts are also an option, as well as individual-sized pies. Toppings run the gamut from Hawaiian to vegetarian to “Carnivore’s Dream,” a blend of pepperoni, sausage ham, and meatballs on that amazing crust.
In addition to pizza that consistently wins Frederick
Magazine’s annual “Best of Frederick” contest, the restaurant also has an array of soups, salads, pasta, pounded chicken tenders and wings, sandwiches, wraps and subs. Pasta dishes include pasta calamari, cheese ravioli and shrimp scampi. Sandwiches, most served on a ciabatta roll, include pesto chicken salad and Italian cold cut. “You Name It” is the title for one of the subs, with diners calling the shots with the filling choices.
On nice days the restaurant’s patio is filled with customers and in addition to enjoying your food in the large dining room there is also delivery to home and workplace.
We have expanded AGAIN. This time we have added a brand new taproom featuring Vanish Farmwoods Brewery craft beers. The perfect space for large groups, events and parties.
