Introduction

Diversify and The Block are a collaborative community interest company specialising in social inclusion, awareness and prevention workshops across the uk.

About us

We deliver a wide range of topics tackling issues identified by education professionals, Ofsted and the DfE as current concerns within schools and our wider society.

Our specially selected advocates bring first-hand knowledge and personal perspective. Speaking of their own experiences they offer insight and conversation into a world that may initially alienate the audience. Through this open interaction, students can converse with the advocate and ask those awkward questions in an open environment without fear. Our Advocates subsequently break down misguided perceptions and prejudices within society.

DIVERSIFY LGBTQ+ WORKSHOP

As pupils enter puberty, and sometimes before this stage, they may discover that their sexuality and their gender identity are different from the majority of their peers. This workshop focuses on the history surrounding the LGBTQ+ community and the journey they have been on. We will also cover different types of families and changes in the law.

By the end of the workshops, non-LGBTQ+ pupils will have gained an understanding of the difficult journey that their LGBTQ+ peers are navigating, helping to reduce the incidence of homophobic bullying. At the same time, LGBTQ+ pupils will be given valuable skills to help them to avoid and respond to instances of bullying.

DIVERSIFY HOMOPHOBIC BULLYING & DISCIMINATION WORKSHOP

Even before they are aware of their sexuality, children can be exposed to homophobic attitudes. If a pupil does go on to identify themselves as homosexual, the world can become a very frightening place, full of fears of not being accepted, surrounded by verbal abuse and inappropriate jokes, with violence and harassment an ever-present threat.

The fear of homophobic discrimination can even prevent young people from seeking help for bullying, increasing their isolation and the depth of their suffering.

Diversify’s Homophobic Bullying & Discrimination workshops describe what homophobia is, how it arises and the effects on those targeted. Our workshop advocates are experienced and skilled in designing age-appropriate role-plays and discussion groups which effectively tackle the themes involved to promote greater tolerance and understanding.

DIVERSIFY DISABILITY WORKSHOP

Our Disability workshops are designed to engage children and young people into thinking more imaginatively about the world they live in and the diversity of the people within it. This workshop challenges students to rethink the way they might view disability and change their perceptions of what the disabled community can do.

The workshops are created by disabled adults who are specifically trained to contribute to the social and emotional education of young people.

DIVERSIFY Racial discrimination and cultural awareness workshop

Are you keen to develop integration within your multi-ethnic community or do you want to increase the understanding of your pupils who are growing up in a primarily monocultural environment? Or do you simply want to help children to grow up with a healthy respect for difference – as required by Ofsted?

Information about the relationships between different cultures is often delivered via the media which tends to focus on the differences between us and the problems this creates rather than how we share a common humanity. On the other hand, some cultural awareness programmes ignore the tensions and focus only on the benefits of diversity. Diversify’s Racial Discrimination and Cultural Awareness workshops strike a balance between celebrating differences and taking action to reduce cultural discrimination in our schools and institutions rather than pretend that tensions do not occur. We provide pupils with effective tools, including role-play scenarios and open discussion forums to understand the real issues that lead to cultural discrimination and develop workable solutions for improving the relationships between us all.

DIVERSIFY BULLYING & CONFLICT RESOLUTION WORKSHOP

Bullying is one of society’s most enduring and pervasive ills and tackling it requires a combination of zero-tolerance and effective Anti-Bullying programmes. Diversify can take care of the latter with our interactive Bullying & Conflict Resolution workshops. Our roleplay activities present realistic but non-threatening scenarios to help keep pupils interested and allow them to practise the skills that will benefit them in all aspects of their lives. Our open forum discussions are ideal for debating strategies that can be used for tackling bullying and resolving the inevitable conflicts which occur as part of growing up.

DIVERSIFY Cyber Bullying Workshop

We all rely on the Internet every day of our lives and it is easy to get lulled into a false sense of security when sharing private information. Once it is ‘out there’, it is almost impossible to control and can be used in cyberbullying campaigns, particularly when it involves sexual content (e.g. ‘sex text’ messages or explicit videos/images). Interactive role-plays ground the information delivered in real-life scenarios, while open forum discussions stimulate debate and allow pupils to air their concerns. Diversify’s Online/Cyber-Bullying workshops help our young people to understand the implications of seemingly innocent exchanges while highlighting the emotional trauma caused by cyber-bullying. By the end of the workshops, pupils will be much more Internet savvy and able to enjoy the benefits of technology while avoiding many of the pitfalls.

DIVERSIFY EMPOWERMENT AND MINDFULNESS WORKSHOP

Our empowerment and mindfulness workshop explores different coping mechanisms children can implement to help deal with the growing stresses they encounter. This workshop enables pupils to become aware of their feelings, stay calm, concentrate and manage their stress to perform to the best of their ability. It includes meditation, role play, sensory aspects, and drama exercises. These exercises can be included easily into a class routine to help the children in their everyday learning. In this workshop, we look at what the word ‘empowerment’ means and what makes us feel empowered. Using special techniques students will learn how to communicate what makes them feel happy and confident. We will also talk about which aspects of ourselves we are happy with and which we are not.

Students will look at how we are stereotyped by the media and what expectations these stereotypes create, particularly in terms of our gender roles. Finally, we look at what makes a positive and negative role model.

Diversify Islamophobia, Antisemitism & Religious Discrimination

Regardless of their background, there will be few school-age pupils in the UK who have failed to pick up on the current tensions involving the religion of Islam. Islamophobia is a recently adopted term that is used specifically to describe the aversion to or fear of the religion of Islam and Muslims; however, just like antiSemitism, Islamophobia is related to a much broader problem of discrimination on the grounds of religion, ‘race’ and/or culture. This workshop seeks to introduce young people to the concepts of prejudice, bigotry and discrimination and to build awareness of the destructive and hurtful effect of those actions – such as bullying. The workshop is both educational and practical and is designed to help pupils understand and practise acceptance of those who have different backgrounds, opinions and beliefs. The workshops are skillfully designed to be thoughtprovoking and stimulating, incorporating role-play exercises, which encourage creative thinking and empathy in open discussion forums. Through this pupils have the chance to explore complex subjects such as religious discrimination in a safe and supportive context. Pupils are also encouraged to share their own experiences and to discuss possible solutions.

The Block Gun and Knife Crime Session

Guns & knives ruin lives! But all too often, pupils associate these deadly weapons with the fun experiences of, the glamorous illusions peddled by the film industry or the macho lyrics of the gangsta rap star and playing ever more realistic video games.

To ensure pupils understand the gravity of the decision to use or carry guns or knives, they need to be introduced to the reality of weapons and the law, the real implications of making poor decisions involving weapons and how conflict can be avoided without the need of a dangerous deterrent.

Age-appropriate role-plays and open discussion forums are used to fully engage with pupils and understand their perspectives on gun and knife crime.

The Block County Lines Session

County lines are deeply ingrained into the fabric of the street gang way of life. It begins with the grooming of teens, even primary school children. Lured by gifts and attention from gang elders, they are sent on trains with packets of drugs and burner phones.

Many youths from deprived areas see drug dealing as the only way to make a life for themselves and escape the neighbourhood.

County lines concern the communities in the target areas and the predominately young drug carriers being put at risk who are sucked into a whirlpool of crime and violence. As well as reinforcing local drug problems, county lines commonly lead to violence and sexual exploitation. In these sessions, the students will have the opportunity to speak with exgang members and learn through their lived experiences.

The Block Drugs and Alcohol Session

It’s a fact of life that school-age pupils are almost certainly going to be pressured into trying drugs and alcohol, with some exposed while they are still in Primary Education. These substances must be stripped of their glamour and pupils presented with the sobering reality of the effects of misuse before they become tempted into habits that could lead them on a pathway to addiction, poor health and potentially criminal behaviour. Our Drugs & Alcohol workshops present the facts, in an age-appropriate way, and invite pupils to share their concerns and questions. Workshops also include sensible interactive role-play scenarios to act out common social situations involving drugs and alcohol.

The Block Gender Equality Session

This session challenges issues of gender inequality in society and in the media through discussion, debate and drama. We aim to empower young people to speak out against injustices in society when it comes to inequality between the sexes, giving young people ownership over these issues and the confidence to speak out. Our workshops are perfect for enhancing SMSC development.

Our Gender Equality workshops are adaptable to different key stages and can explore a range of issues:

- Gender stereotypes

- Unconscious bias

- The history of women's equality

- Women in the workplace

- Sexualisation and objectification in the media

- Harassment and #MeToo

The Block

Sexual Bullying & Inappropriate

Behaviour

session

Sexual harassment, verbal as well as physical, is no laughing matter but many people, including children and young people, think it is acceptable to behave disrespectfully towards members of the opposite sex.

Sexual bullying and inappropriate touching not only have a devastating impact on the victim but can also have far-reaching effects on the perpetrators, affecting future work prospects or putting them at risk of being arrested for sexual offences. this workshop educates pupils about what is and is not deemed appropriate physical contact, and what language is considered disrespectful. The attitude of the law to sexual offences, including harassment and bullying, is made very clear as are the potential implications. As with all Diversify’s workshops, pupils will engage in suitable, ageappropriate interactive activities and get involved in a constructive debate where they can raise any concerns or questions.

The Block Consent Session

Consent workshops are educational sessions designed to teach students about the importance of consent and boundaries in sexual relationships. The purpose of these workshops is to help students develop a clear understanding of what consent means and how to communicate their boundaries in sexual situations. This can help reduce the incidence of sexual assault and promote healthy, respectful relationships. This session covers the following topics: What is consent? Understanding boundaries. Power dynamics and consent. The importance of communication. How the law defines and deals with rape, sexual assault, and harassment.
