A TOWN CALLED HOME: EXHIBITION TELLS THE STORIES OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE COME TO MAKE THEIR LIVES IN NE LINCOLNSHIRE

A

new exhibition at the Fishing Heritage Centre paints a fascinating portrait of the lives and experiences of people who have moved to the Grimsby since the 1950s. A Town Called Home is organised by Jill Wilson and Tracy Todd of The Equality Practice Ltd with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The exhibition is the culmination of eight months working with members of a wide range of cultural minorities who shared their stories of otherness, of triumph over adversity, of hope, and of the belief that a better future for themselves and their families could be and has been found in our community. Many speak of the warmth and good nature of the people of the town, how beautiful this part of the world is and how much it has to offer and how their impression of their new home town changed as they came to know it better. There are always plenty of negative stories about migration to be found in the media but the stories behind this exhibition offer a powerful counter narrative of hope and industry and of people who arrived in our area with a range of experiences and skills, from welders, engineers, teachers, doctors, business owners, fish factory operatives, carers and more. The stories on display, alongside cultural artefacts and original artwork, are fascinatingly diverse and present the memories of local residents who came to the town from areas as diverse as Zimbabwe, India, Turkey, Cyprus and many others. We went along to the opening on Friday night to meet many of the subjects of the exhibition and to enjoy some fantastic food and dancing. Opening the exhibition, local entrepreneur Andy Green stressed the importance of migration for economic prosperity and looked forward to the contents of the exhibition becoming a vital part of the local history archive. It’s certainly an illuminating collection of personal histories, particularly in a town which has its roots in the story of Grim and Havelok the Dane and definitely well worth a visit and an hour or two of your time. A Town Called Home launched to the public on Saturday 2nd February from 10am-4pm in the Muriel Barker Gallery at the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre and runs every day except Mondays until Sunday 30th June. Admission is free.

CANNIBALISM ON THE WARDS: AN EVENING OF ABSURDITY AT THE CAXTONS The Woman in the Safari Outfit, the Woman in Armour (aka Joan Of Arc) and the Woman with the Gavel, have called a meeting. The business at hand is how to attack the men’s ward before they attack the women and eat them. A ruse is needed so they decide to kill another of their number, an Aviatrix named Amelia Earhart. This is a classic piece of theatre of the absurd by one of the originators of the genre and it promises to be a fascinating evening, the like of which you’ve never seen before. Chamber Music is in the Studio Bar from Thursday 4th April to Saturday 6th April and all tickets are £5.

THE GAME’S AFOOT AT THE CAXTON THEATRE FOR HOLMES AND THE RIPPER One of our highlights of 2018 was the Caxton’s production of Murder Weapon, a stylish thriller from the pen of Avengers screenwriter Brian Clemens, so it’s good to see that they’ve found room in this year’s schedule for another Clemens effort. Based on the book Jack the Ripper, the Final Solution by Stephen Knight, Holmes & The Ripper has the world’s greatest consulting detective and his stalwart

companion Dr Watson becoming embroiled in the famous series of grisly murders in fog wreathed Whitechapel in 1888. It’s a fast moving and thrilling show, based on one of the most popular theories about the identity of the Ripper, and it’s guaranteed to have you on the edge of your seats.

KEEP IN TOUCH THURSDAYS or KITT nights for short are informal social nights, held most months, in the Studio Bar. All are welcome - members old and new, friends, family and those thinking of joining. It’s a good chance to meet, catch up and chat. The next KITT night is scheduled for 21st March. Why not pay a visit and see if the Caxtons is for you.

Women in Business I

nternational Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It’s celebrated on March 8th every year and offers an opportunity for celebrating women and their achievements all around the world as well as making a call to action for accelerating gender parity. This year’s theme is Balance For Better, which means acknowledging that what the world needs right now is a better balance between genders across all walks of life and that everyone - women and men - can pledge to take a concrete step to help achieve gender balance - whether to help women and girls achieve their ambitions, call for gender balanced leadership, respect and value difference, develop more inclusive and flexible cultures or root out workplace bias. It also means that each of us can be a leader within our own spheres of influence and commit to taking action to accelerate gender parity. Here at The Peoples we’re aware that many of the local businesses who advertise with us are led by women and we think it’s a perfect occasion for celebrating their achievements. So here are just a few of the amazing women who make such an important contribution to our local economy – each with a piece of good advice for young women (and men since it’s about balance this year) seeking to emulate their successes. You can find out more about International Women’s Day at www. internationalwomensday.com

very parent wants their child to do well at school but sometimes it can feel like we just pack them off to school each day and hope for the best. It’s difficult to know what practical help you can give them to ensure that they reach their full potential but one practical step that can work wonders is to enrol them in the Kumon programme. Kumon originated in Japan and is now a wordwide educational phenomenon. The Grimsby Centre is at Healing Village Hall and is run by Sarah Prior. The aim of the programme is to help students become advanced learners with positive attitudes to study by boosting their self-confidence as they work out how to overcome challenges and problems by themselves. Check out the Kumon website at www.kumon.co.uk for more information.

Kumon is an independent study programme, but students are never alone. Sarah provides the guidance and encouragement that students need to take their learning into their own hands, increasing their motivation to succeed and achieve. Of course Kumon are aware that every child is different and their programme is not a one size fits all system, nor is it a quick fix. Their individualised programmes allow students to progress at their own pace and in addition to developing academic ability, Kumon study fosters in students the mind set and skills for learning. Sessions take place between 3.30pm and 5.30pm with students dropping in for about twenty minutes, once or twice a week. If you’d like to help your child reach their full potential give Sarah a call on 01472 884104

PEOPLES We’ve been hearing for years that the big superstores, (with a bit of help from the internet), have been killing off the traditional high street retailers, but this year there have been hints that perhaps the out of town bubble is about to burst. It seems that many people have grown bored with doing a huge once a week out of town shopping run and prefer to shop local and daily or every other day.

#propersh In recent weeks the major stores have announced that they’re making huge losses on their delicatessen and fresh food counters and they’re planning to start a programme of closures. Many retail analysts are now predicting a resurgence of the kind of niche retailers that made the high street a great place to shop. So in our next issue we’re planning a celebration of proper shops and we’re looking for butchers, bakers, candlestick makers, fishmongers (they don’t just sell fish, they mong it), greengrocers, toy shops and hardware stores, plus lots of others, to come on board and join us in a feature celebrating the best of specialist shops.

T

here was an excited buzz at the Central Hall on Friday 15th February when the Roy Kemp Hall was the venue for the first performance of A Requiem, a new collaboration between Alan Barnes, Pat McCarthy and poet Josie Moon Subtitled ‘A suite of music and poetry to commemorate a century of war and to call for peace in our time’, it’s powerful stuff, with Josie Moon’s storytelling more confident and emotional than ever. She’s not afraid of taking on a big theme and telling it her way and she deals with the causes, nature and history of the century or so since the Great War, via the Second World War and up the present day with the proxy wars of Southeast Asia and the Middle East, and coming right up to date with the carnage of Aleppo, Baghdad and Basra. The battle between war and peace, light and dark, is played out over changing landscapes and in shifting light, but there are always those who seek to gain advantage from the hostilities, appearing in the text as crow men, carrion eaters who derive their wealth and sustenance from carnage. The Alan Barnes Octet were on excellent form as ever and with a line up including some of the best of contemporary British scene, including Mark Nightingale and Neil Yateson on horns, Gilad Atzmon and Robert Fowler on reeds, Pat McCarthy on guitar, Dave Green on bass and

Seb DeKrom on percussion and of course Alan Barnes himself there was some virtuoso playing and excellent composition on display. What was particularly nice to hear, for those of us who can’t help approaching the whole event like an essay and who sit there trying to follow the argument, was that there was a much stronger connection made between the music and the words than was the case with their previous collaboration, A Fish Tale, making both words and music easier to follow and much more compelling. Alan Barnes and Pat McCarthy have created a set of pieces of chamber jazz, infused with elements of cool jazz and bebop, with a breadth of imagination and colour to match the range of the poetry. The overall effect is not just sadness but also a righteous and bright burning anger. A recording of the work will soon be forthcoming and there’s an extensive tour planned for later in the year. The Alan Barnes Octet will return to this area for another performance of A Requiem on July 8th at the auditorium as part of a special summer concert with MAPAS.

GARDEN AID CARING FOR TWO COMMUNITIES Age Care Development is a local charity which has built strong links with the Kyenjojo District of western Uganda, and especially with the community of Mukunyu. The village provides shelter and care for those who are too old, (or too young), to work in the local tea plantations. Life in Mukunyu can be hard. Finding food, shelter and clothing is a constant struggle. Even basic medicines like paracetemol are beyond the reach of most people and an education is all but impossible for children who do not have the money to pay school fees. Our good friend Mark Howarth of Garden Aid donates 10% of his profit to funding projects aimed at helping the residents of Myukuntu, helping to provide much needed medicines, food, hospital equipment and school books which means that he really is helping two communities.

ROSS CASTLE GLOWS RED TO HELP RAISE AWARENESS OF CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE

O

ne of Cleethorpes’ best known landmarks was bathed in red light on Friday 1st February to mark Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) Awareness Day. The display was the result of a campaign by local mother Michelle Aslin whose son Reggie, (pictured left), was born with half a heart. He had to endure open heart surgery at just four days old and although he survived these initial problems he is not expected to live beyond eighteen years of age. Because of the surgery Reggie has already had and will continue to have in the future, he may not qualify for a transplant because his heart is so damaged. “It was heartbreaking, something no parent should have to go through,” Michelle says of Reggie’s treatment. “You do have to kiss your baby goodbye because you don’t know if they’ll be coming back out.” She tries not to think the worst but fears she may never get to see Reggie at his prom, getting married or having children, but the Grimsby mum says she is overjoyed Ross Castle will be lighting up red for Congenital Heart Disease Awareness Day. “There are more children living in North East Lincolnshire with CHD than people realise,” she explains. “Lighting up Ross Castle raises awareness that people need to ask questions during pregnancy to see if their baby is affected by the disease so that plans can be in place at birth.” Councillor Kath Wheatley, portfolio holder for children commented, “We’re always keen to support awareness days such as these. My heart goes out to the families who are affected by congenital heart disease and to those whose lives may be cut short because of it.” To find out more and to keep up to date with Reggie’s story go to his Facebook page at REGGIE’S HALF A HEART JOURNEY HLHS.

FIVE GOOD REASONS FOR HAVING YOUR CHIMNEY SWEPT REGULARLY 1. AVOIDING CHIMNEY FIRES At this time of year the fire service responds to large numbers of domestic chimney fires. Don't become another statistic. Regular sweeping drastically cuts down the risk of chimney fire. 2. AVOIDING SOOT FALLS Even a small amount of soot can create a whole load of mess resulting in big cleaning bills for carpets and upholstery. And if the opening of a stove door and the disturbance to airflow causes such a fall the result can be flames shooting out into the operators face. Better safe than sorry.

3. PROTECTING YOUR INVESTMENT Many modern solid fuel installations use flexible stainless steel liners within the existing brick chimney. Warranties on these liners are normally state which fuels you can use and how often you must have it swept. A typical liner that is not swept regularly burning smokeless fuel will have a life expectancy of as little as 3 to 5 years. Check your warranty to find your sweeping interval and what types of fuel your liner is suitable for. 4. TROUBLE SHOOTING A qualified Sweep will assess all aspects of your appliance and chimney system. He will be able to inform you of any problems and potential dangers, usually long before they become a major issue. 5. PEACE OF MIND Should you be unfortunate enough to suffer damage because of a chimney fire your insurance company will almost certainly want to know that you have taken precautions to avoid the chimney fire in the first place. A certified chimney sweep will issue you with a sweeping certificate that insurance companies recognise as proof that your chimney has been swept to the national standard. So there you go. Look after your chimney and it will look after you in return. It’s got to be good value!

SUMMER BECKONS BUT STAY READY FOR THE COLD SNAP! Well we’ve just had the warmest February ever but of course that doesn’t mean that the winter is done with us yet - there’ll be more cold weather before summer comes striding in looking all suntanned and eating choc ices. And that means more driving in terrible conditions with all its attendant risks, so it’s a good time for a quick refresher on the key elements of safe winter driving. First of all make sure your car is in good order. Have it ser viced, (the garages on these pages come highly recommended), make sure fluid levels are good, check your tread depth. If there are any problems with your motor this is the time of the year that will expose them. Second important point - anticipation. Did you see that coming? Look well ahead for potential hazards – including, of

course, patches of ice – and keep your speed well down. Accelerate, brake, steer and change gear as smoothly as possible to reduce the risk of a skid. Using a higher gear may aid grip on packed ice because it makes it easier to get traction. In a manual vehicle, you might need to slip the clutch a little to prevent the car from stalling. Many automatics will let you select second gear at a standstill to pull away in which avoids wheel spin. Braking distances can increase tenfold on ice compared with a dry road so you should leave up to 10 times the normal recommended gap between you and the car in front. Remember that tyres grip less efficiently in cold conditions. So even if the temperature is above zero and there’s no ice on the road, you should take extra care.

FRIDAY 19th – SUNDAY 21st JULY HILLSBOROUGH PARK, SHEFFIELD

T

his year Sheffield’s biggest party, the Tramlines Festival will be at Hillsborough Park again, this time from Friday 19th to Sunday 21st July and after a fantastic 10th edition in 2018, with Stereophonics, Noel Gallagher and Craig David topping the bill on the main stage this year promises to match that standard or even go better. At Tramlines 2019, crowds will be in indie, rock and disco heaven when the festival welcomes three heavy hitting headliners: Two Door Cinema Club, Courteeners, and Nile Rodgers & Chic. Other highlight performances will come from Wales’ finest, the Manic Street Preachers and Rag’n’Bone Man who recently topped the charts with Giant with Calvin Harris. There’ll also be the highly anticipated return of indie outfit Doves after a nine year hiatus, Madchester scene leaders Happy Mondays, Sheffield favourites Reverend and The Makers, co-frontman of the Last Shadow Puppets Miles Kane, Circa Waves who are back with third album What’s It Like Over There, Brits Critics’ Choice Award nominee Lewis Capaldi, hedonistic south London four piece Shame, and Peter Hook & The Light who’ll be performing their own material as well as tunes from the New Order and Joy Division back catalogues. This comes alongside some of the finest UK emerging talents: the BBC Sound Of 2019 nominated Sea Girls; Liverpool four piece Clean Cut Kid; Sports Team whose new track ‘M5’ was premiered by Annie Mac on Radio 1 only last week, and Easy Life who made it into Radio X’s Best New Bands for 2019 list. The breaking talent list continues with when young, Another Sky, Anteros, Bloxx, Hey Charlie, Bedroom High Club, and flying the flag for Sheffield and South Yorkshire, Casey Lowry, Oddity Road, The Reytons, The Wired, The Seamonsters, Cora Pearl, and Children Of The State.

More than just a quality music festival, Tramlines 2019 will feature a side-splitting comedy line up programmed by the Leadmill, and its Into The Trees familyfriendly area will return with even more activities and entertainment than before. Whilst the Tramlines line up gets bigger each year, it remains seriously good value for money. Tickets are now on third tier and priced from £65.50 plus booking fee for all three days with VIP upgrade tickets are available for an additional £50. Under 12s go for free. For all the latest news and updates go to www. tramlines.org.uk. or follow them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
