In The Know Your indispensable guide to what’s going on where you live Tea With Betty At The Minster And We’re All Invited To Come Along!

T

he Art In The Minster programme has brought us some of our favourite cultural highlights of the last couple of years (remember the Chandelier Of Lost Earrings and the amazing Deities At The Bottom Of The Garden?) so it’s a real pleasure to learn that organisers Our Big Picture have announced a new series of events, beginning with Betty’s Windows, a commissioned exhibition of the work of local textile artist and tutor Jo Smith. It’s an embroidered narrative using stitch, found windows, belongings and little histories and offers the chance to look into the lives of a previous generation. Jo has won prestigious awards and prizes for her work. She’s a member of contemporary textile groups including internationally regarded Prism, new contemporaries Eleven and Louth Textile Group. She’s also resident artist at Grimsby Institute. The exhibition runs from June 13th to July 11th and is open Tuesday to Friday 9.30am to 2.30pm and Saturday 9.30am to 1pm. There’s also a fascinating programme of events to support the exhibition including the evening opening event on Wednesday 13th June from 6pm to 8pm where visitors can meet the artist and a series of workshops at which participants will have the chance to create a piece of textile art incorporating personal photographs, memorable items, fabrics, jewellery, clothing and found treasures. The cost of the workshops is £30. On July 7th there’s a special event – Tea With Betty – which will feature local history, family art workshops, a walking tour of Top Town with historian Emma Lingard. It looks like being a fantastic day and great value so do go along and enjoy! For further information on all these events or to book workshop places go to www.ourbigpicture.co.uk

oh what a circus oh what a show Evita Grimsby Auditorium Tuesday 29th May Saturday 2nd June 2018 Reviewed by Josie Moon

E

vita began life as a rock opera concept album in 1976, became a West End and Broadway smash hit in 1978 and has established itself as one of the most popular and successful British musicals in history. Politically charged and centring on the complex character of Eva Peron, it seems curiously appropriate to our times when corruption, excess, populism, the cult of personality and the dark threat of fascism pervade the global political climate just as they did under the Peron regime in Argentina. It’s the right show at the right time and although this touring production got off to a slightly hesitant start it soon hit its stride and leapt from the stage with energy that was intense and mesmerising. This production is fresh from a successful run at the Dominion Theatre and it’s a slick spectacle with a set featuring a balcony from which Eva both ejects her various lovers and declares herself first lady of Argentina, stunning in a white gown with slicked back platinum blonde hair. Madalena Alberto as Eva Peron owned the balcony, the stage and the audience from the moment she delivered the first almost whispered line of the iconic Don’t Cry For Me Argentina. The audience held its collective breath as the song built and grew to a climax that was deeply moving and understated. With songs as huge as this one, the temptation to belt it bigger than Elaine Paige must be compelling but Alberto held back and was all the better for it. If sound problems made the first half a little shaky in places, the second was a stunning tour de force. Alberto owned every moment and dazzled as brightly as the song and dance number Rainbow High. What could be a mawkish and protracted final section in which Eva’s death is depicted in painful detail was tender, moving and compelling. I have never known an audience at the Auditorium to be so hushed and reverential. And it’ wasn’t just Alberto who shone brightly. Her supporting men were equally compelling. Gian Marco Schiaretti as Che cut a dashing and charismatic figure in the familiar red vest and beret of the doomed revolutionary. Peron (Jeremy Secomb) was commanding with a fine voice and the supporting cast, including children from Grimsby’s Stagecoach under the tutelage of Diana Whitworth were outstanding. Evita runs until Saturday 2nd June and is well worth a visit.

£3.7 Million Pound Boost To The Local Economy From Dockside Regeration

P

lans have been revealed for a cash injection of almost £4 million for the Greater Grimsby Heritage Action Zone as part of the ‘Town Deal’, a package of plans for investment by government and local agencies. The Heritage Action Zone will see premises in the Kasbah, docks and town centre given a new lease of life for business and community use. The Kasbah was designated as a Conservation Area in 2017. Owners ABP, together with North East Lincolnshire Council and Historic England, are looking to exploit a living local tradition of producing smoked fish, and develop the area as a centre for artisan food, arts and media. Historic England will provide support and advice to the Great Grimsby Ice Factory Trust and partners to look at possibilities for the creative re-use of the Ice Factory, an important building at risk which stands at the gateway to the Kasbah. The scheme will also involve work on Victoria Mills, the Cooperage, West Haven Maltings and Haven Mill, and creating space for events and activities around the Minster. As a result of the scheme local residents and businesses will find new opportunities to benefit from their local heritage, and visitors will discover a warmer welcome and a rewarding experience in Grimsby. Left: Councillors and representatives from ABP and Historic England welcome the announcement at The Kasbah

The Lincolnshire Show 2018 to feature an RAF100 theme There’s lots to look forward to at the Lincolnshire Show this year including several special exhibits marking the centenary of the Royal Air Force. Among the hundreds of exhibitors, performances and attractions will be an array of RAF themed activities and stands, including a Dakota flypast, a Spitfire flypast, a replica Red Arrow, mini tank driving for children and a special aviation themed treasure hunt trail. The event, which takes place on Wednesday 20th and Thursday 21st June, will also be recognising 100 years since the end of World War I and celebrating the best of rural Lincolnshire with a mixture of entertainment, food, shopping, music and agriculture.

The show will host a number of exciting animal displays, daring stunts and lively music in the main ring, and visitors will be able to satisfy their shopping habit by visiting more than 600 trade stands offering everything from clothes, jewellery and shoes to cars, lawnmowers and hot tubs as well as take home beautiful floral displays from the flower show. For foodies, Lincolnshire producers will showcase the very best of their wares, and there will be inspirational live cookery demonstrations from top local chefs in The Lincolnshire Kitchen. All in all it sounds like another fun packed day. We’ll see you there!

murder weapon

Caxton Theatre from Saturday 2nd June to Saturday 9th June

T

here’s a real treat in store this week for anybody who loves a good thriller when the Caxtons present Murder Weapon, a psychological thriller from the illustrious pen of the great Brian Clemens, the man responsible for some of the most iconic television of the 1970s and 80s including The Avengers, The Professionals and of course Thriller, which used to have us all hiding behind the cushions on a Saturday night. The action takes place over the course of a weekend in a prosperous country house when newly appointed Chief Constable Jessica Bligh (played with great style by Pamela Whalley, who manages to combine authority and tenacity without straying into martinet territory), stumbles upon the immediate aftermath of a shooting. The murder weapon, a .22 pistol, is quickly discovered as is a prime suspect, in the shape of Charlie, a psychologically damaged ex-convict, recently released after serving ten years for the murder of his wife and children. Charlie’s a complex character, confessing and denying his own guilt by turns, and John Flint delivers a performance of hugely impressive sympathy and subtlety, bringing his confusion, anger and self loathing to the fore. The staging is elegantly simple and director Debra West keeps things moving at pace, bringing the atmosphere and style of a 1970’s teleplay, (great twangy music between scenes by the way), and never letting the complexity of the flashback structure get in the way. Although some of the parts are relatively small every member of the cast brings their very best to the performance, particularly Mike Wilson as by the book Detective Freemont and Kieron James as George. It’s not a whodunnit exactly but there are plenty of twists along the way and clues to be found if you’re one of those people like to play along but even if you don’t pick the killer you’re sure to have an excellent night. Murder Weapon is at the Caxton Theatre until Saturday 9th June.

follow your dreams and don’t let the brassicas get you down Gangsta Granny Grimsby Auditorium from Wednesday 6th June to Saturday 9th June

B

en is bored. His parents have gone to their regular Friday night ballroom dancing and he’s stuck at his Granny’s house, playing Scrabble and trying to avoid eating any of the range of delicious cabbage based delicacies set before him. He’d rather be reading his plumbing magazines, following his dream of a lifetime of ballcocks and pipework. Little does he suspect that his apparently tedious granny has a secret identity as the Black Cat, a master jewel thief with a lifetime of swag in a biscuit tin on a shelf in the kitchen but when her hidden life is revealed then things start to get really wild as ben and his granny embark on an adventure which will end up with them both smelling of poo and meeting Her Majesty the Queen in The Tower Of London. Welcome to the wonderful world of Gangsta Granny, brought to Grimsby Auditorium by the Birmingham Stage Company. It’s an extraordinary and exhilarating comedy adventure based on the book by David Walliams (image left) filled with comedy and colour and featuring a rotating set that’s almost a character in its own right, a corner shop, a dance competition, some elephants, a dancing bear, a good deal of juvenile humour frequently involving flatulence and excellent performances by the whole cast. Put at its simplest - we can’t recommend this one enough. There’s plenty of laughs for the kids, enough sophistication to keep the adults entertained and of course there’s a moral - follow your dreams and don’t diss your gran. Gangsta Granny is at Grimsby Auditorium from Wednesday 6th to Saturday 9th June. Don’t you dare miss it!

another great show from Jockey Club Live .....

Plan B

at Market Rasen Racecourse Friday 1st June review by Matty Gray images by Hetty McCarthy

A

mid roars of appreciation, Plan B takes to the stage in the scorching heat as the latest big name artist to headline Jockey Club Live at Market Rasen Racecourse. Jockey Club Live events have become well known for bringing chart topping stars to the county with their summer shows, and tonight’s headliner is no exception. Plan B emerged onto the UK hip hop scene back in 2006 with his acclaimed debut album Who Needs Actions When You Got Words. Since then he has achieved phenomenal mainstream success with quadruple platinum selling The Defamation of Strickland Banks and made directional debut Ill Manors. Now he’s marking a new phase in his career, revamping his image and sound for his latest release: Heaven Before All Hell Breaks Loose. Slicked back silver hair causes a stir amongst the crowd as he makes his entrance. Jumping straight in with a new track, Grateful, he has a mesmerising presence on stage. The 90 minute set is a mix of soulful throwbacks and new material influenced by reggae and dancehall. Protest song Ill Manors (from the film of the same name) is an anthemic stand out moment, uniting fans as they dance together and rap along to every lyric. Backed by an excellent band, the fierce intensity of Plan B’s performance builds as the show goes on. Pounding bass lines in Mercy get the crowd jumping for the encore, then comes a shift in tone with a raw acoustic version of End Credits - originally a collaboration with drum and bass duo Chase & Status, this proves to be another fan favourite of the night. The racecourse is buzzing with energy for the final track - Motowndriven smash hit Stay Too Long. After a five year hiatus, it’s safe to say Plan B is in his element here.

And don’t forget that there’s another great Jockey Club show on the way to the racecourse because Paloma Faith will be bringing hits old and new to the course for a stunning headline performance on Saturday 18th August! For more details and to purchase tickets go to www.marketrasen.thejockeyclub.co.uk. It’s going to be a great show so we’ll see you there!

WORLD CHOCOLATE DAY

Go on treat yourself If there’s one thing that unites the world it’s the belief that the most delicious thing in the world is definitely, almost certainly, probably ..... CHOCOLATE. Nothing else comes close really and it’s high time that chocolate had some recognition in the form of a special day all of its own. Well now it does. So happy world chocolate day to you and make sure you get plenty of the good stuff.

W

ho’d have thought that the humble seed of an unremarkable looking tree could have such an impact on the world? Cocoa has been cultivated for thousands of years and was first encountered by Europeans when Columbus seized a canoeful on his fourth voyage to the Americas in 1502. Nowadays the average Briton eats nearly 20lbs of the sweet stuff every year and you can even buy chocolate coated crisps! Why do we love it so much? Some scientists believe that chocolate consumption triggers brain waves which cause us to relax. Others think it just tastes good. Most of the world’s chocolate now comes from West Africa and they need to produce a lot because it takes four hundred beans to make one pound of finished product. So make sure you treat yourself to a nibble or two on World Chocolate Day and if you’re looking for a special treat then remember that our friends at Sweet Indulgence have a huge selection on offer, including sugar and dairy free varieties, and of course lots of other classic sweets to really make your day.

A New Couch For Honeysuckle Ward Promises A Better Experience For New Mums At Grimsby Hospital

A

new couch on Honeysuckle Ward at Grimsby Hospital promises to improve patient experience of maternity services. The Health Tree Foundation (HTF), official charity of Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust, purchased the new equipment and Midwife Lynn Jefferson, who runs the ward, explained how the it would benefit mothers: “The couch has a unique shape will help mums to obtain the most comfortable position during birthing, and provide a relaxing place for those precious first moments together after birth.” The charity used money from its Little Lives fund, which aims

to provide those little extras for children and their parents when they visit Grimsby, Scunthorpe and Goole hospitals and staff on Honeysuckle fundraised half of the £511cost of the couch by taking part in the Glow in the Park Fundraiser in 2017. HTF community champion, Laura Gooderham, said: “It’s great to see the money we have raised being put to good use helping expectant mothers who are due to have their child at Grimsby hospital. We are extremely grateful to everyone who braved the cold and took part in Glow in the Park. Their effort and hard earned fundraising has helped us to fund an important piece of equipment. We can’t thank everyone enough.”

CYCLING

TOUR DE YORKSHIRE 2018

AND A VISIT FROM THE SPANISH VUELTA ON THE CARDS? ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR!

The 2018 Tour de Yorkshire was officially the biggest and best yet with 2.6 million fans lining the route over the four days of racing. No less than 900,000 roadside spectators witnessed a gripping conclusion on Sunday with Greg Van Avermaet (BMC Racing) wrapping up the overall victory after Stéphane Rossetto (Cofidis, Solutions Credits) had secured a sensational stage win. Rossetto’s ride will go down in Yorkshire folklore after the Frenchman launched an audacious solo attack with 120km of the brutally tough ‘Yorkshire Terrier’ remaining, and evaded a vastly reduced peloton to seal the biggest stage win of his career.

Van Avermaet sprinted home 37 seconds behind Rossetto in second place to tie up the race leader’s blue jersey, nine seconds ahead of Spaniard Eduard Prades Reverter (Euskadi Basque Country-Murias). Last year’s race winner Serge Pauwels (Team Dimension Data) rounded out the podium, five seconds further adrift. More exciting news came with the announcement that talks are underway to bring the opening stages of the Vuelta, the Spanish grand tour, to Yorkshire. That promises to be a really exciting event and we’ll be keeping our fingers crossed!

ARTS

There’s a lot going on at New Projects Include Poetry, Song, Books, Artwork And Much More!

T

here are exciting times ahead at La Luna with new publications in the offing, social singing, music and poetry and a major new project funded by the Arts Council and bringing some outstanding creative talent to the town to work with local writers and performers. Best Words is a year long programme of poetry and music set to begin in the autumn of 2018. It follows on from last year’s hugely successful Young Voices project which gave young writers the opportunity to work with established writers and editors to produce work for a brand new anthology. Best Words takes this idea to the next level with Emerging Voices, a programme for young writers aged between 18-25. La Luna are also working with Lincs Inspire to bring a number of exciting poetry events to the area including a series of poetry workshops and performances at Cleethorpes Library and regular poetry cafe events at Riverhead Coffee in Grimsby. It’s not just poetry that’s on offer however. The Great Grimsby Community Choir will be producing two brand

new pieces for performance in the autumn, working with professional composers and writers on a suite of music to commemorate the end of the First World War and another to celebrate Christmas. Raising Funds To Help Students In Uganda’s Kyenjogo District Our good friend Mark from Garden Aid (that’s him in the rather smart orange hat on the opposite page) is a man well known for his fundraising activities and at present he’s looking to raise £250 to make adaptations to a schoolhouse in Western Ugands so that Hannah, who uses a wheelchair since recovering from polio some years ago), can continue her education. The money is already in the bank for school fees and books, it’s just the necessary improvements to amenities that are required so if you feel like helping out why not give Mark a call on 07742 638423.

It would be awfully easy to assume that everything you need to know about what’s happening in our area is centred on our three major urban areas - Grimsby, Cleethorpes and Immingham - but in fact there’s always lots going on in the villages of North East Lincolnshire and some of our strongest communities and most vibrant businesses are to be found in our most rural settings, including superb quality hospitality and dining at Stallingborough Grange, educational excellence at Kumon in Healing, and the very best in holiday homes for your best four legged friend at Barking Mad, who are based in Holton le Clay. It’s businesses like these that make the villages of North East Lincolnshire such exciting and vibrant places to live!

COULD YOU OFFER A DOG A LOVING HOME WHILE THE OWNER IS AWAY? It’s great fun, all of the benefits of dog ownership without the emotional or financial commitment. We carefully match dogs to your home to ensure that both you and your guest have a wonderful barking mad experience.

My boys love their Barking Mad holidays! As soon as Claire arrives they know that they are going. Its lovely to see how excited they are because it gives me such peace of mind that they are getting the same love and care whilst they are away as they do at home. Kennels just wouldn't suit them and finding a service like Claire offers is brilliant, she is so caring and professional we wouldn't even consider going anywhere else.
