We’ve had a lot of fun redesigning and we think we’ve made room for lots of extra content, so have a leaf through and see if we’ve managed to include something to interest you. In this issue we’ve got news of some exciting events on the way, plus the announcement of more than £3 million of government funding for arts projects in and around Grimsby. RACE FOR LIFE 5k AND 10k WILL BE OPEN TO ALL THE FAMILY THIS YEAR

EOPLE in Cleethorpes are being encouraged to get the year off to a great start by making a date to join Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life. This year, for the first time, Cancer Research UK is inviting everyone in the area – women, men and children - to join the Race for Life. There are events for people of all ages and abilities taking place at Meridian Park Showground on Sunday 18th May and whatever your fitness level there’s an event to suit you. We spoke to Kay Patchett, Cancer Research UK’s Cleethorpes Event Manager about what makes the Race for Life so special and she said: “Race for Life events are fun, colourful, emotional and uplifting. They help people with cancer by raising money for research, including clinical trials which give patients access to the latest treatments. And you don’t have to be sporty or superfit to take part. You don’t need to train or compete against anyone else. All you need to do is go to the Race for Life website, pick an event, sign up and then have fun raising money in whatever way you like.” The Race for Life is a powerful, inspirational movement which unites participants in Cleethorpes with people across North Lincolnshire and the whole of the UK and raises millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer by funding crucial research. Taking part in our Race for Life events enables people to get together and remember loved ones lost to cancer or celebrate the lives of those who have survived. At the same time, they are helping to make a difference to people with cancer, right now. Race for Life events have been women only since they started, over 25 years ago but from this year onwards they will be open to men and children which means that anyone who has experienced the effects of the disease will be able to join in. Thanks to everyone who raises money, Cancer Research UK is able to fund research to fight 200 types of cancer. The good news is more people are surviving the disease than ever before. Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress. here’s a fine line up of artists scheduled for the Cleethorpes Blues Festival which takes place on Sunday 16th June at The Moon On The Water. Headlining is Mungo Jerry, best known for the classic British pop blues hit In The Summertime, officially the most popular summertime song ever and estimated to have sold over 6 million copies. Mungo Jerry has shared stages with the likes of Jim Hendrix and Elton John and he’s certain to make sure the festival closes in fine style. Europe’s largest Viking Festival returns to York from Wednesday 20th27th February, telling the stories of Viking women through the voices of seers, queens and shield maidens – women whose influence was as great as any mighty warrior. The Caxtons were founded during the early days of the Second World War and over 75 years later they’re still going strong, offering eight varied productions a year in their own 180 seat theatre and running an extremely successful Youth Theatre group. They hold a regular once a month get together called Keep In Touch Thursdays (or KITT nights for short). EXCITING TIMES IN PROSPECT AS GRIMSBY IS AWARDED £3.2 MILLION IN ARTS FUNDING
T
he last year has seen a wide variety of exciting and innovative arts events in and around Grimsby town centre with events taking place in the Minster and the market, (some of which are illustrated here), and there’ll be plenty more on the way following the announcement by the secretary for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport that Grimsby has been awarded over £3million for a programme of culture works. The money will be matched by further public and private sector funding from the Humber LEP and other partners. The town is one of five locations in the UK to receive the funding for cultural related activities, following a bid for the money by North East Lincolnshire Council. The funding will go towards building a programme of new international events to be hosted in our area, attracting new visitors and investment and creating new public art and cultural spaces to help regenerate historic parts of the town. Support will be on offer to local businesses in the cultural sector and for individuals with a business idea wanting to start their own venture, ensuring that no creative industry initiative is left out. It is hoped that the funding will boost the town over coming years, generating new jobs, new businesses and increasing town centre footfall. Announcing the funding Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Jeremy Wright MP said: “Creativity, arts and heritage make our towns and cities unique and our communities better places to live. With clear plans in place, this funding provides an incredible opportunity for Grimsby to fully realise the potential of its local heritage and history to create a programme of events to engage the local population, while also creating a sustainable future for local creative businesses.” Councillor Gaynor Rogers, portfolio holder for Tourism, Heritage and Culture at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: “We’re thrilled to have been awarded this money. We’re on the cusp of a very exciting time for our area, with the pioneering Great Grimsby Town Deal looking to regenerate our area. Combined with this funding, the potential of our heritage and culture can finally be realised. This funding will help us attract more people to our area, increasing audience and community involvement in cultural activities, creating new major international events, new art and more creative spaces for people to enjoy.”
GRAHAM FIRTH: CAPTURING THE LIFE AND PEOPLE OF THE MARKET The Art On The Market initiative gave us some really exciting events last year (check out the images opposite if you’ve forgotten) so it’s good to know that there are more in the pipeline including, from late January through to May, artist Graham Firth who will be working on Top Town Market to capture the routine of market life and uncovering the characters of the market - the stallholders and customers who make it our favourite place to do our shopping. Graham, who spent most of his career as a lecturer at Doncaster College, specialises in printmaking, including lithography, etching, screen printing and lino printing and he will be working on the Market most Thursdays and Saturdays using his own homemade press and there will also be a programme of workshops, demonstrations and a final exhibition in May.

In Lincolnshire, we have more than 83 nurses and this is thanks to the general public helping us to fund them each year”, she explains. Your Marie Curie trek place will include training guides to help you get going, a fundraising pack, a Marie Curie T-shirt and access to a private Facebook group
just for your trek so you can chat with fellow trekkers beforehand, sharing tips and training stories along the way. Registration is only £299.00 with a minimum fundraising target of £3,400. A VERY HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR TO YOU! Chinese New Year’s Day, also known as the Spring Festival, is an important date in the traditional Chinese calendar. The date varies but this year it falls on February 5th. It is the high point of a celebration which lasts for fifteen days, from New Year’s Eve to the Lantern Festival and by tradition it is a day for families and will often feature a reunion dinner. Houses will be cleaned and decorated with red paper cutouts and scrolls of poetry and after the meal is done firecrackers will be set off and gifts of money exchanged in red envelopes. The years of the calendar are named after the twelve animals who make up the Chinese zodiac and their order is drawn from the legend of the Jade Emperor’s great race. This year is the year of the pig. The pig came last in the race and it’s year is therefore twelfth in the calendar cycle. In Chinese tradition the pig represents luck, wealth and honesty. Those born in the year of the pig are believed to be hard working, truthful and sociable with a great sense of humour and quick wittedness.

Since Dave Hemingway left the group at the end of 2016, Gaz has moved across to front the band with Alison and taken on vocal duties. ONE FOR THE BOOKS: THE HAUNTING DELIVERS SOME GENUINELY CREEPY VICTORIAN HORROR AT THE CAXTON THEATRE
A
stranger arrives at a tumbledown mansion on a wild and windswept moor. As night falls a storm sets in and lightning fills the night with strange and disturbing shadows. Doors slam for no reason. Inanimate objects seem to have taken on lives of their own. Birds assault the french windows. Strange voices and the sound of bells fill the air. Welcome to The Haunting, a classic antiquarian ghost story in the style of Dickens (who gets a credit) or MR James, which tells a sombre and at times genuinely creepy tale of the visit of a London bookseller to the home of a long standing client of the family firm and of the strange events which occur. At first the atmosphere is merely uncomfortable, with the present owner of the estate, a younger son who has no love of the house or his deceased father’s library, brusque and unwelcoming but as time passes events grow stranger and the tension builds to almost unbearable levels. It’s a brave thing to do, putting horror live on stage. Whatever makes us scream also has the potential to make us laugh and there’s nothing more depressing for actors and directors than hearing an outbreak of sniggering in the stalls at what is supposed to be a moment of terror. No danger of that here though because director Nigel Stolworthy and his cast of Keiron James and Ruairidh Greig succeed in investing the piece with a sense of dread and foreboding that has the audience on the edge of their seats and builds to a riveting climax that is triumphantly terrifying. With a combination of excellent staging, lighting and sound effect and first class performances from both members of the cast the production hits exactly the right note and is pretty much guaranteed to draw you in. In the preview that I saw a relatively small audience managed several small shrieks, plenty of sharp intakes of breath and a heartfelt expletive which was testament to the level of tension that had been established and thee hard work and talent of all concerned. The Haunting runs from Saturday 19th to Saturday 26th January and if you love a great ghost story then this is a show definitely not to be missed! Finding food, shelter and clothing is a constant struggle. Even basic medicines like paracetamol are beyond the reach of most people and an education is all but impossible for children who do not have the money to pay school fees. Our good friend Mark Howarth of Garden Aid donates 10% of his profit to funding projects aimed at helping the residents of Myukuntu, helping to provide much needed medicines, food, hospital equipment and school books which means that he really is helping two communities.

Age was no barrier to the residents who were keen to get their New Year’s resolutions to stay fit off to a great start. NELC PILOTS NEW WEEKLY RECYCLING SYSTEM NELC is trying out a new system for weekly recycling collections at more than 1500 homes across the borough. In the pilot each home will have a new wheelie bin for cans and plastic bottles and a large orange recycling bag for paper and card. The pilot will start the week beginning 28th January and will run until the week ending 19th April. Recycling will be taken every week during the trial. There is no change to green bin collections for general household waste. Green boxes will still be used to collect glass and green wheelie bins will still be used for general waste. We’ve been pretty lucky up to now but according to the forecasts things are about to change so if you haven’t taken cold weather precautions yet then now’s the time to do so. Best advice? Stay at home. Don’t unless you have to. Buy a box set and hibernate. But if you’ve got no choice but to drive? Well take some basic precautions to keep you as safe as possible. Check your lights, mirrors and windows are completely clear before you set off. Top your screen wash up and use a proper additive. Check your tyres for tread and pressures. Ensure that your radiator has the right anti freeze levels. Keep at least a quarter of a tank of fuel at all times to avoid running out if caught in long delays in bad weather. Take care, stay warm and just try to remember that it’s only for six months or so and then we’ll see the sun again.

Hi Kevin. First things first - congratulations on winning Strictly! What is it like switching from Strictly Come Dancing training sessions, and the high of winning the show with Stacey Dooley, to taking on the role of Stacee Jaxx in Rock of Ages? It’s really exciting because I’ve wanted to do musical theatre for so long. I’ve talked about it quite a lot over the last couple of years, but everything has been very dance and Strictly focused, so when this opportunity came up I wanted to grab it with both hands. What made you want to be involved with Rock of Ages? I first saw the show in 2009 on Broadway, when I was in New York with Burn The Floor, and Rock of Ages was on the next street over. I just loved it and went back and saw it two or three more times on Broadway and then saw it again when it came to the West End. I’m a big fan! I’ve always been a massive rock fan anyway, and before I was on Strictly I used to fancy myself a bit of a rock star. I used to have long black hair and eye makeup and black fingernails and used to swan about thinking I was the Jim Morrison of the ballroom! How was the audition? I think it went well! It was a bit daunting to be auditioning as a musical theatre performer, rather than as a singer. I was in Dirty Dancing The Musical before but that was primarily a dancing role. However, the director and choreographer, Nick, has an amazing ability to make you feel immediately comfortable. I didn’t feel like I was being judged so I just went for it! Could you tell us a little about the show?

It’s the story of two wannabes that have headed to California to make it as stars, with the help of amazing 80s power rock songs. Drew wants to become a rock star, and Sherrie wants to become an actress. They both end up working at this bar, waiting tables and falling in love. However, in walks this guy Stacee Jaxx who is the front man of a rock band. He’s the over the top, flamboyant megastar that all the girls want to be with and all the men want to be but at the same time he’s a bit of a villain – he’s pretentious and self obsessed, thinking he’s God’s gift to everything and ultimately he disrupts everyone else’s lives!
Rock Of Ages opens at the Auditorium from Tuesday 5th February to Saturday 9 February and it promises to be a great show! We got to talk with the star of the show and winner of Strictly 2018 - the one and only ....

Oh yeah. I can definitely tap into the pretentious nature of him – I think I used to be a bit like that, thinking I was a rock star when I was just a ballroom dancer, everyone goes through that sort of phase a bit though! I used to think I was really rock’n’roll when I am the least rock’n’roll person in the world!
What was your first experience of musical theatre?
What are you doing to prepare for the role? I’m taking singing lessons to make sure my voice is strong enough to sing the role, particularly to be able to maintain it. It’s one thing to be able to sing in an audition but it’s another to do eight shows a week and belt out these amazing 80s tracks. Do you have a favourite song you look forward to performing? My first big song is Bon Jovi’s Dead or Alive, that’s Stacee’s big moment and I love that song. It’s his big opening in the show and you’ve really got to come on and make a massive impact with the audience, really get them going and show what kind of character Stacee is. It should be fun! What are the challenges of performing this style of music? I’ve spent a lot of time learning how to breathe differently as a singer than I do as a dancer actually. As dancers we take shallow, short bursts of air as we move, whereas when you’re singing and hitting these big notes you want to take in
Do you have a go-to karaoke tune? My karaoke song is Are You Gonna Be My Girl? by Jet. I love doing that at karaoke but I used to really scream it out and not be able to talk afterwards!
One of my earliest memories is me and my sister sat in front of the TV watching Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. We used to get the fire guard from the fireplace and put it in front of us, pretending it was the car. We would sit there one behind the other singing! We used to get my Dad’s snooker cue out of the garage and do Me Ol’ Bamboo! When we were really young we came down to London to watch Cats and I remember being so blown away by the whole spectacle of it all. I remember sitting there and thinking this is amazing. Mum and Dad bought us the soundtrack on cassette, and I used to sit and listen to it all the time.
Have you ever been given a piece of advice, or some words of wisdom that have stuck with you?
You’ve toured before with various shows, is it something you enjoy, or do you find it a challenge?
Finally, what can audiences expect when they come to see you in Rock of Ages?
I love it actually. I don’t have a problem with tour life, I quite enjoy it and find it exciting. When you’re on tour with a cast you really get to know them and you build a sense of family. It all feels like a bit of adventure. Do you have any ‘must-have’ items you take with you? My podcast app on my phone, I’m constantly listening to podcasts on my phone, lots of motivational ones. My iPad too, so I can catch up on Match of the Day and stuff!
I can’t remember who said it to me, but I took it on board, “it’s not about doing nothing wrong, it’s about doing something magical”. I think people make the mistake of thinking to do a good performance they’ve got to be technically perfect, but there are some brilliant performers who can hold a crowd in the palm of their hands but they’re not always necessarily the best dancers, singers or actors. However, they can create magic and make people feel something.
Don’t expect ‘Kevin from Grimsby’ as they call me on Strictly Come Dancing! It’s me in a completely different light, probably being a bit raunchier than you’re used to! I’m going to look completely different, but it will be a lot of fun and you should expect to have an amazing time. It certainly sounds like it. We’re looking forward to it already. See you there!
