Time To Unite Art In The Market Against Dementia To Bring A Wide At The Humber Range of Art and Bridge Memory Performance To Walk Top Town

P

eople across the generations in our area are being called on to unite against dementia by signing up for the Humber Bridge Memory Walk which takes place on Sunday 30th September The aim is to turn the bridge into a ribbon of blue as walkers tackle a 6km route across the Humber and back. Many people walk because a family member or has dementia, to raise awareness and money for a great cause but no matter your reason for wanting to be part of a brilliant event, it’s a great opportunity to turn your thoughts into action and sign up at memorywalk.org.uk Margaret McHugh, Alzheimer’s Society services manager told us: “Dementia is now the UK’s biggest killer, with someone developing it every three minutes. Every pound raised through the Memory Walk will help us provide vital information and support, improve care, fund research and create lasting change for people affected by the condition. We’re calling on individuals and teams from across the area join us this autumn. Walk with us at Humber Bridge Memory Walk to help defeat dementia.”

here’s an exciting new two year programme of public art on its way to town, launching in August. Art In The Market will be based in Market Central, a newly created indoor market stall space, on Grimsby’s Top Town Market. This unique venue will become a focal point for an original high quality

arts and makers programme and with plans ranging from exhibitions to pop up participation installations, craft demonstrations and workshops to vintage fairs, from busking to music ensembles it looks like there should be something lined up to suit everyone. Our Big Picture are working with the NEL Music Hub, Franklin College and Grimsby Institute, to create a varied programme including Art in the Cart – using a large wooden cart for commissioned art installations, Makers Bays – display bays within entrances of the market and specialist fairs and markets. Grimsby’s own Terry Clarke will be artist in residence so keep your eye on the OurBigPicture website and social media for more details.

halloween at Twinkles

Let’s Carry On Screaming

Halloween brings together strands of folklore and magic from a wide range of cultures to create a festival which celebrates saints, martyrs and the memory of those who have passed away. In many countries it is the Dia Del Muerte - the Day of the Dead - and in Europe it takes it’s name from being the day before All Hallow’s (or All Saints Day). There are a wide range of traditions associated with the festival but mostly it’s a day for getting dressed up in your best and scariest costumes and strutting your stuff. RECOVERY SONGS

POET RALPH DARTFORD PULLS NO PUNCHES WITH HIS ONE MAN SHOW AT THE ALBERT ROOM

T

hursday was National Poetry Day and to mark the occasion La Luna and Lincs Inspire played host to poet Ralph Dartford who led a workshop for the Emerging Voices poetry project in the afternoon and in the evening performed his one man show, Recovery Songs, in the Albert Room at Cleethorpes Library. It’s a hard hitting piece, offering an account of Dartford’s own life and career, whose trajectory saw him rise to be a producer and director at some of the most prestigious theatres in the

country and then fall from grace as his drug and alcohol habits snatched his success away. That he found the strength of will to fight back against his addictions is a tribute to his resilience and determination but of course the road to recovery was not smooth and for every step of progress there was an almost inevitable stumble. Dartford’s account of his journey is frank and engaging, funny at times, at others profoundly sad and shocking. It’s remarkable stuff that at times makes the audience feel distinctly

uncomfortable but Dartford manages to find positives wherever possible and, while accepting the blame for his own predicament, does not allow himself to get bogged down in self pity. If you weren’t there you missed something rather special. Congratulations too to the members of the Emerging Voices project who read their own work at the start of the evening. It will be interesting to watch their progress over the next few months under the guidance of Josie Moon and her colleagues at La Luna.

IN THE KNOW

WELCOME TO THE BIRTHDAY PARTY FROM HELL! Come and help us celebrate our

EST 1943

Recently widowed Joan Merrifield is preparing to turn seventy five. And what better way to celebrate her special day than with a visit from the whole family, reunited after many years of estrangement? Surely she could not have asked for a better birthday present? What could possibly be nicer than being surrounded by her nearest and dearest? Well, as it turns out, just about anything‌ The festivities get off to a disastrous start when Joan finds herself in bed with her sleazy ex-husband. Things only go downhill from there and, as the gin starts to flow and the social niceties subside, it soon becomes clear why this family have nothing to do with one another. With long buried secrets and resentments running chasm deep, who needs party games? Bold and brutal, SMOTHER is a savage, scathing black comedy in which blood really is thicker than water. AND LOTS MORE GREAT SHOWS ON THE WAY IN THE NEW YEAR! CHECK THE CAXTONS WEBSITE FOR UPDATES

The Caxtons were founded during the early days of the Second World War and over 75 years later they’re still going strong, offering eight varied productions a year in their own 180 seat theatre and running an extremely successful Youth Theatre group. They hold a regular once a month get together called Keep In Touch Thursdays (or KITT nights for short). New members are always welcome and KITT nights can be a great way to find out if Caxtons is for you. Check the website or social media for further details. To celebrate their anniversary they have commissioned an original play by local author Ben Parfrement Parkes, whose first play, Dead And Breakfast, enjoyed great success in 2016 and we asked him to give us some idea what to expect.

HOBBIES

Hobbies & Interests Most of us have hobbies, and whatever floats your boat, whether it’s knitting or fishing, cycling or singing they’re an important part of our lives, essential to our happiness and well being. So why are hobbies so important? Well first of all they bring us pleasure and enrich our lives and in a world that can sometimes seem to have lots of sharp edges that’s got to be a good thing. By introducing fun into our lives, especially for those of us for whom work and other responsibilities can take up most of our time, they help lighten our loads, relieve stress, make us more patient and allow us to acquire new skills. The upshot of all of that is that hobbies make us happier and more interesting people. For some a hobby may be a solitary pass time but the large number of clubs and associations that we see around town indicates that for many people hobbies are an important part of their social lives, bringing people together to share the things they enjoy.

Sing for pleasure and let the music out! Humber Belles meet on Thursdays at Wendover Hall from 7.15pm to 9.30pm and from November 1st we are holding a series of five open rehearsals to learn two new songs for Christmas. Interested? You just need enthusiasm and the ability to sing in tune, as learning materials will be provided. Visit our website, email humberbelles25@gmail.com or call 01472 695836 to arrange a visit to one of our rehearsals - it’s time to let all that music out for everyone to hear! Hope to see you soon!

XANDER AND THE PEACE PIRATES BRINGING MUSIC AND INSPIRATION TO SIGNHILLS ACADEMY

SEPT

25

I

f you love the blues then there’s a great show in prospect for you at Signhills Academy on Tuesday 25th September when the school plays host to Xander And The Peace Pirates. Having spent five years as house band at Liverpool’s Cavern Club Xander and the Peace Pirates have established a reputation as one of the best Britiah bands around and their combination of rock, blues and soul has seen them share stages with the likes of Joe Bonamassa, Buddy Guy, Bon Jovi, Eric Bibb, Robben Ford, and Manfred Mann, establishing themselves as one of the most exciting bands on the circuit. Lead singer and guitarist Keith Xander was born without a right arm below the elbow and plays

guitar using a prosthesis and hook with a pick attached at the end but he hasn’t let that stop him from becoming a virtuoso musician. The band will be visiting the school during the day of the gig to work with pupils and explain to them how important it is to not be held back by disabilities. With haunting riffs, genius melodies, and an irrepressibly infectious charisma, Xander and the Peace Pirates are a band not to be missed, sharing their musical passion to standing ovations, while spreading a universal message of peace, love and harmony and Tuesday’s show promises to be quite an event. Tickets are available from Eventbrite for the ridiculously good value price of £4. See you there.

THIRTY FIVE YEARS SINCE THE RELEASE OF GRAPES OF WRATH

SPEAR OF

DESTINY

AT THE MOON ON THE WATER

I

t's thirty five years since Kirk Brandon got together with Stan Stammers to form Spear Of Destiny and their new album Tontine is the band's fourteenth. It has drawn high praise from fans and critics alike, regarded by many as a return to their very best form and certainly if the band’s show at Moon On The Water in Cleethorpes is anything to go by the band are on the crest of a wave. The set list is made up of plenty of classics and lots of the new stuff and its striking how well the two sets of songs fits together, full of emotional and anger and dark humour. The line up has always been a changeable thing but the present A team, with ex-Sister of Mercy bassist Craig Adams and New Model Army guitarist Adrian Portas on board is one of the strongest in ages with Portas’ guitar blending particularly well with Steve Allen-Jones’ keys to underpin the melodies and provide an stylish counterpoint to the full force of Brandon’s vocal. Phil Martini on drums completes the set up. Brandon is on great form - his vocals full of anger and irony - but he’s still one of the best singers of his generation, not just one of the traditional punk shouters. There’s always something faintly operatic - ecclesiastical even - about his delivery. Fact is there are no small Spear Of Destiny songs. Put him behind a pulpit and Brandon would be a fine fire and brimstone preacher. A cheerful one though - he certainly looks like he’s enjoying himself tonight.

“.... there are no small Spear Of Destiny songs. Put him behind a pulpit and Brandon would be a fine fire and brimstone preacher .... ”

The fans are happy too. There’s a good crowd in at The Moon - not packed out, but getting to be a tight fit for this up and coming venue which is increasingly coming to be the natural home of live music in the town - and there’s plenty of energetic dancing and even one of the most age inappropriate mosh pits I’ve seen in a long time. Tontine is packed with excellent story songs, like Brighton, which references the mods and rockers shenanigans, Enigma (about Brandon’s father’s life in post war London) and Mr Livingston stand seamlessly alongside the classics, in particular an explosive Liberator which brings the pit to crisis point. Great stuff - if you get the chance you should catch the band while their on tour - and add a copy of Tontine to your record collection and if you’re in Cleethorpes or thereabouts and you’re looking for some great music to wrap your lugs around you can find the Moon On The Water on the seafront near the big wheel or at www.moononthewater.co.uk

Enhance, Modify, Improve Even experts in finance and economics struggle sometimes to say exactly what our homes will be worth in the next 5 or 10 years but what we do know for is that some changes made to your home will improve its relative value more than others. So how do we get the space we need and maximise added value?

Top of the list has to be a loft conversion. They’re not cheap of course, you’re looking at potential costs of up to £20,000 but they’re usually reckoned to add 12% to the value of your house. WITH SCHULLER AT KITCHEN DISCOUNT

O

nce upon a time kitchens were just kitchens. Places to cook in and do the laundry and that was about in recent years they have become so much more - they’re the beating heart of the modern home, a place to for sharing time and making memories. With the increasing trend towards open plan living lots of us nowadays like to watch TV or other media in the kitchen, play games, read a book or learn the guitar. Many kitchens accommodate a small home office space and the kitchen can become a hub of arts and crafts activity. All you need is a newspaper to spread on the table, lots of great ideas, paper, glue and paints and you’re away. The kitchen is no longer just a room for adults – it’s a space for the whole family. With so much going on it makes sense to spend as much time planning your perfect kitchen as you would your living room. And that’s where Kitchen Discount can help. A powerful new exhibition by young local photographers explores issues around child exploitation

from Tuesday 9th October 2018 to Sunday 13th January 2019 Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre in the Café Gallery

A

new photography exhibition exploring local experiences of child criminal exploitation and showing photos created by children who have been victims has opened in the Cafe Gallery at the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre. The images on display explore the impact of violence and exploitation and were created by a group of local young people sharing their own experience of serious organised crime and exploitation through county lines. The exhibition is being organised in partnership with North East Lincolnshire Council’s youth offending service. The striking images draw on the children’s own life experiences. With the support of Jamie Bubb Photography, they created a series of photographs depicting a young person’s view of being exploited through organised crime. The photographs are presented alongside quotes from the individuals involved in the project and they have attracted significant praise from local authorities across the country for their honest approach to the topic. Speaking of the importance of the exhibition and how it can raise local awareness of the pressure on local young people from serious criminals Councillor Kathryn Wheatley, Portfolio Holder for Children and Young People, said: “These youngsters have had horrific experiences, including brushes with gangs, drugs, violence and organised crime. We work with Humberside Police to help young people that get caught up in that lifestyle and support them as they break away to try to resume the normal life of a young person. These children are the victims, and these images tell their story.” The exhibition is free and will run from Tuesday 9th October 2018 until Sunday 13th January 2019. PALOMA FAITH AT MARKET RASEN RACECOURSE The Jockey Club Live programme at Market Rasen racecourse has given us some of the local musical highlights of the last couple of years, with visits from the likes of Tom Jones, Jess Glynne and the Kaiser Chiefs and it was packed again on August 18th for Paloma Faith, who brought a show which featured her classic hits plus new material from her most recent album, The Architect. On a stage set up to resemble a heap of glowing crystals and dressed in a classic 1960s dress Paloma wowed a packed house and we’ll be waiting with bated breath to find out who might be on the bill for next year’s shows.

AUGMENTED REALITY ART ON THE MARKET AS

BRAVE BOY BILLY COMES TO TOP TOWN

There’ll be added colour amongst the cabbages over the next few days as the Art In The Market project brings an exciting piece of sculpture to Top Town Market with the arrival of Brave Boy Billy, by digital artist Jason Wilsher-Mills. Wilsher-Mills is well known for his life-affirming works which explore his experiences as a disabled artist. In recent years, he has embraced the possibilities of digital technology, including augmented reality and 3D-printing. The exhibition will include the interactive Brave Boy Billy sculpture, which has previously been displayed at the Tate Modern in London. Visitors are welcome to interact with the artwork with a tablet or smartphone, revealing hidden augmented reality features. You can see this unusual and ingenious artwork at Market Central at Grimsby Top Town Market on market days from Thursday 11th October to Tuesday 16th October from 9am-5pm. In addition to exhibiting his work, Jason will also be hosting drop-in workshops on Market Central on Saturday 13th October from 10am-3pm, catering to both children (8 years+) and adults. Tablets will be available on Saturday 13th October when Jason is on site, so there’s no need to bring your own gadgets on the day. Smartphone users, however, will be able to access the art for the duration of the exhibition. .

Case study Council compulsory purchase of an empty property in Welholme Rd, Grimsby A property on Welholme Road, Grimsby sat empty until recently due to the previous owner passing away in 2001. The property remained in probate and with no family members taking responsibility the property fell into disrepair. It became a regular target for break-ins, fly tipping and anti-social behaviour with the council regularly being called out to attend to secure the property. In 2012 the council’s cabinet approved for the property to be a served a Compulsory Purchase Order and the council to take possession. This process was completed in January 2015 and works were then carried out to clear the property and put it on the market. The property was bought from the council in April 2017 by a local developer who has completely renovated the property, bringing it back up to a decent standard. The property is now on the market looking for a new owner.

ccording to the campaigning charity Empty Homes there are more than 200,000 homes in the UK that have been empty for over six months. Some of these may not stay empty (if they are on the market, or are being renovated). But others are stuck empty, perhaps because of inheritance issues or because their owners are holding on to the property hoping for a rise in its value before selling it. More than a thousand of those empty properties are in North East Lincolnshire. A further 800 which have been empty for more than two years, according to council figures. When so many people are unable to get on the property

Could you transform an empty house into a home sweet home?

ladder it’s obviously an issue that needs addressing and now North East Lincolnshire Council, working in partnership with ENGIE, is supporting national Empty Homes Week and will be hosting two drop in sessions for both developers and residents to discuss or report empty homes. The sessions will take place at the ENGIE offices New Oxford House on George Street in Grimsby on Monday 15th October between 1pm and 4pm and Friday 19th October between 9am and 12 noon Empty properties can be the cause of a range of problems, attracting vandalism, fly-tipping and antisocial behaviour often and the Council has a range of solutions available

for dealing with them including in some cases the use of powers to compulsory purchase properties and find ways to bring them back into use. If an empty property is causing problems to your local community, report it online at www.nelincs. gov.uk or call the Home Improvement Team on (01472) 324727. Alternatively, if you are the owner of an empty property or a developer who would be interested in purchasing one please email the Home Improvement Team on homeimprovementteam@ nelincs.gov.uk or call (01472) 324727.

A new play by Ben Parfrement-Parkes to celebrate the Caxtons seventy fifth anniversary .....

eventy five years ago, with the Second World War raging across Europe, a group of enthusiastic amateurs, based at the Grimsby Evening Telegraph, got together to do their bit for local morale by staging theatrical productions and they’ve been cheering us up at roughly six weekly intervals ever since. To mark their anniversary the Caxtons commissioned local author Ben Parfrement-Parkes to write a new play for the company and the result is Smother, a black comedy on a white stage about the doubtful joys of family life. The play starts with a bang just as the curtain opens to reveal Joan, widow, matriarch and dispenser of a viciously caustic wit, clad in a red dress like an open wound, who is less than pleased to find that her family are about to descend on her for a celebration dinner. They’re a motley crew of chancers, ne’er do wells and bewildered victims of family politics and if Joan’s antipathy to her offspring seems a little cruel at first, when we’ve met them all and spent a little time with them our sympathies are back with their mother. If you like your comedies darker than dark then this one will suit you down to the ground and when the atmosphere becomes chillier and the dramatic elements take precedence then you can just sit back and enjoy the relish with which the author skewers his characters before vivisecting them mercilessly for our entertainment. It’s not always a comfortable watch either. Be prepared to laugh a lot but be ready for some heartbreak along the way as Joan’s life falls apart before your very eyes. Throwing a group of mismatched characters together at a celebration has been a staple of British comedy drama for even longer than the Caxtons have been around and there are hints here of Harold Pinter, TS Eliot and Mike Leigh but also nods to the likes of Galton and Simpson, the Carry Ons and the Farrelly Brothers. The dialogue is excellent, fast moving and laced with venom and it’s delivered with a chilling precision which attests to the skill of director Joseph Parfrement-Parkes in bringing the best out of his cast. Christine Thomas is outstanding as Joan, bitter, twisted and filled with self-pity and self-loathing in equal measure, while Graham Turner as Malcolm, Gary Fox as Jeremy and Barbara Lidgard as Claudia and Reese Harris as Gordon all deliver excellent performances as her damaged (and damaging) family members. Special mention too for Della Maylan whose socially inept Rebecca, possessor of one of the most spectacularly gravity defying baby bumps in history gives the play some of its best laughs but also provides its moral centre. Congratulations all round - this is definitely one to see! Smother is at the Caxton Theatre until Saturday 20th October. Tickets are available from www.caxtontheatre.com or from local Tourist Information Centres.

Make a date with your chimney sweep!

Y

our chimney is the exhaust pipe for your home, getting rid of the toxic by products of combustion and it needs to be clear of blockages and obstructions. Soot build up, birds nests and debris from damaged brickwork can all stop your chimney from working properly and cause dangerous gases to leak back into your home. They also increase the risk of chimney fires and long term smoke damage to your furniture and to the fabric of your home. And did you know that even people with a flame effect gas fire in regular use should have their chimney swept once or twice a year? No nor did we but even with gas fires an unswept flue can sometimes create hazardous levels of carbon monoxide. So how often should a chimney be swept? Usually once a year for light use and twice a year for fireplaces in regular use. A professional sweep will be able to advise you more exactly because some fuels, particularly wood and coal, burn dirtier than others. Doesn’t it take ages and make a horrible mess? Probably much less of either than you think. Most professional sweeps work quickly and with minimal mess.

So how much will a sweep cost? That’s one of those how long is a piece of string questions but prices start from about £35 to £40 for an open fire. If you need to have the integrity of your chimney seal tested, or any remedial work done, then your sweep will quote you a price. So there you go. Chimney sweeping - more important than you realise, cheaper than you think and if you give one of our sweeps a ring you can be assured of first class service and minimal mess. So why not give your chimney a bit of TLC soon, because a healthy chimney makes for a healthy home!

AUTUMN’S ON THE WAY SO DON’T FORGET THESE VITAL CHECKS Antifreeze

Check coolant level regularly and, if required, top up with a mixture of the correct type of antifreeze. Your garage should check concentration to ensure adequate cold temperature protection.

Battery

The most common cause of winter breakdowns. A battery more than five years old may struggle in the cold - get it checked and replaced if necessary to avoid the inconvenience of an unplanned failure.

Fuel

Keep at least a quarter of a tank in case of unexpected delay.

Lights

Check and clean all lights regularly and carry spare bulbs.

Tyres

Should have at least 3mm of tread for winter motoring. Consider winter tyres for improved safety. Check pressures at least every fortnight.

Windscreen

Reduce dazzle from the low sun by keeping the screen clean inside and out. Now is a good time to renew worn wiper blades.

Screen Wash

Use a 50% mix of a good quality screen wash to reduce the chance of freezing in frosty weather.

Locks

Stop doors freezing shut with a thin coat of polish or Vaseline on rubber door seals.

and don’t forget to carry a shovel!

Look after your battery this winter and it’ll look after you in return!

T

here’s a change in the weather predicted, with a cold snap and plenty of rain on the way and that can be tough on auto electrics. When your car won’t start it’s usually an issue with your battery. Cold and damp weather plays havoc with batteries because electrical systems have to work a lot harder and starter motors require all the current they can get to turn over the engine on colder mornings. Older, weaker batteries will often already have reduced performance and cold temperatures will reduce this further, to the point where the battery will go flat very quickly. To avoid trouble remember to switch off lights, wipers and heater before stopping your engine at the end of your journey. This prevents any unnecessary drain on the battery the next time you start up but still check again that everything is switched off before turning that key. Avoid using heaters, heated screens and heated seats for longer than you have to as they all put high demands on the vehicle’s battery. Check that no interior lights, including boot lights are left on and no accessories such as phone chargers have been left connected. Some SatNavs, DVD players and iPods can also drain the battery if left

connected. Park your vehicle in a garage whenever possible and get your battery tested, particularly if it is over three years old. And make sure you have some jump leads in the boot, just in case the worst happens. Maybe some bus fare too just to be on the safe side.
