Maybe. In this issue we have features on the new Sue Stone textiles exhibition at the Fishing Heritage Centre, news about how to get involved with the Race For Life, some great competitions for tickets to gigs and a selection of our favourite pictures from the recent GEEKS Comic-Con. Grimsby Sewing & Knitting We’ve pointed out before that Grimsby Sewing and Knitting is one of those TARDIS-like shops that seem to be bigger inside than out – well now it’s even more true because proprietors Paul and Linda Haynes have expanded their empire to include the shop next door – giving them four shop widths of space to fill with top quality haberdashery. The new shop is exclusively devoted to woolcrafts and stocks a fantastic range of yarns from top names like King Cole, Stylecraft, Woolcraft, Cygnet and Sirdar plus needles, hooks, patterns and everything you might need to get the most out of your craft. They’re always happy to give advice too, so if you’re new to the world of woolcraft just drop in one day for a chat and they’ll sort you out with all you need to get started on a project that’s affordable and achievable too!

Is your workplace all set for Cycle To Work Day 2018? So why should we cycle to work? What are the benefits for us? Well first of all it’ll make you feel fitter, look trimmer and boost your happiness levels by getting you out in the sunshine. What more could you ask? How about the boost to your confidence that all of this is going to give you? Yes. That too. And the fitness benefits don’t stop when you park up because the boost to your metabolic rate can last for hours and help you burn extra calories even if you’re sitting at your desk. Not forgetting of course that you’ll probably be around to enjoy all this confidence and happiness for a

lot longer, because there’s a good chance that the knock on benefits from the exercise will include the fact that you’ll live longer. And you’ll probably have more money in your pocket to spend because cycling to work is cheaper too and with car ownership costs skyrocketting and public transport costs not far behind commuting by bike has never made more sense. And lastly, but possibly most importantly it’s good for the planet. While you’re cycling to work you’re not contributing to congestion, burning fossil fuels or creating greenhouse gases. Probably). If you are you should change your breakfast cereal. You can find out more at www.cycletoworkday.org or on Facebook.

building confidence, aiding achievement

At Kumon they believe that the key to learning is confidence and one of the most rewarding things about being a part of as Kumon programme is helping young people to grow in assurance and to develop new skills. We spoke to instructor Sarah Prior of Kumon Grimsby about what makes her job so satisfying. “As an instructor I have had the pleasure of working with many young people and I share the joy and pride of their parents as their children improve their English and maths, gaining self confidence and independence and acquiring valuable study skills. Brother and sisters Ruth, (12), Rebecca (9) and Richie(5) (pictured right) have really impressed me with their success.” Their mother agreed, saying "My children have benefited a lot from studying with Kumon. As they all started from an early age the system is part of their study routine. They do their work every day and look forward to completing each level eagerly. Kumon understands the needs of the learner and through repetition makes it perfect.

I am extremely grateful to Sarah and her team for encouraging the children and making it fun with rewards to ensure the maximum result.” “Kumon is definitely good value and one of the best things you can do to help your children to reach their full potential!”

The Peoples meets top local magician Tom Wright

t’s a complex business interviewing Grimsby’s very own master of magic Tom Wright. One moment you’re asking a question, next you’re picking a card, making sure it’s hidden in the pack and then finding it stuck to the man’s forehead. And don’t get me started on the mind reading dice. You just know that half the people in Freshney Place are watching and laughing at you as you’re being baffled. Tom’s a close up magician who, as well as working at weddings and corporate events, has performed for the likes of Ronan Keating, the cast of Coronation Street and Rod Stewart and has a hugely successful YouTube Channel. He’s also an associate of the Inner Magic Circle and offers training to would be magicians on how to perfect their skills. Tom got his start in magic thanks to his Grandad who taught him lots of tricks he’d picked up during the war and he became fascinated with the reactions that he could get by baffling friends and family and although his performances are more sophisticated these days it’s clear that he is still fascinated by his craft. He’s got great comedy chops too and along with fellow local magicians Steve Greenwood, John Morton, Arron Jones and David Burns he presents and performs at regular Magic Showcases at Lucarly’s Club but you have to be quick off the mark because tickets sell out fast. You can find out more about Tom and the magic showcase at /www.tommymagic.co.uk.

FRESH FRUIT AND VEG ON THE MENU AT THE GROVE FOR NUTRITION AND HYDRATION WEEK Older people who have been unwell or suffer with dementia often lose their appetite or become unable to eat so it’s particularly important that they are supported in as many ways as possible to maximise their nutritional and fluid intake. With this in mind The Grove Care Home in Waltham recently took part in Nutrition and Hydration Week 2018. The catering team at the home included three different fruits at each meal plus daily fresh vegetable soups and smoothies and drinks including water, juice and fruit teas were available at a hydration station throughout the day. The event drew praise from residents, staff and visitors and many of the changes were so successful have been incorporated into the Grove system on a permanent basis.

REMEMBER ME? A NEW SUE STONE RETROSPECTIVE OPENS AT THE HERITAGE CENTRE

T

here’s a fascinating new exhibition at the Heritage Centre that will enthral visitors with a love of Grimsby and its fishing traditions, textile enthusiasts and anyone who loves great pictures that tell complex stories. Remember Me? is a retrospective view of the work of textile artist and 62 Group member Sue Stone. Sue studied Fashion Design at St Martin’s School of Art and then Textiles and Embroidery at Goldsmiths College, London and spent her career as a clothing designer before returning to work as a figurative artist in 2006. Her work is created with a combination of hand and free machine stitch, appliqué, needle weaving and some paint and the pieces on display are a fascinating cross-section of her work over the past ten years. Many feature family portraits or scenes from the docks and other areas of town linked to the fishing industry and although the gaze of the subjects is remarkably frank and direct there are frequent elements in the images that imbue them with an intriguingly dark surreality. Woman cradle fish in their laps, stroking them like children or house cats. Or they wear the fish as a belt. Or hang them from the washing line. A pair of newlyweds (actually it’s Sue and her husband) gaze out of the frame like Grant Wood characters. Smartly dressed women from the 1930s walk the dystopian streets of East London, striding purposefully past high walls of graffiti in Grimsby Street. Wherever you look you’ll find more tiny details to amuse and fascinate and if you’re planning to attend then you’d better set aside plenty of time because this is an exhibition MAR JUL you’ll want to take your time viewing.

MAPLES!

J

apanese maples are the perfect choice of tree for any small, compact or courtyard garden. Their character and appeal makes them ideal for creating a focal point, brightening a shaded corner, or elegantly overhanging a pool or water feature. With their Eastern origins in Japan, Korea and China, these small trees are suitable for developing gardens with Oriental themes and designs, choosing other suitable planting partners for them, like ferns, hostas, bamboo, azaleas, camellias, and more. Their natural shape and growing habit of branches make Japanese maples an ideal choice of small tree for gardens or growing in large patio pots. Their leaf shapes, sizes and colours vary immensely. Many have a broad palm shape, but these are often divided and dissected into the most delicate and intricate forms. Add to this their wide range of colours, from deep greens to yellow, gold, purple or even variegated patterns and you have immense variety to choose from. Japanese maples put on a show right through the year, starting as soon as foliage unfurls in spring and continuing until their autumn transformation into shades of gold, bronze, red and orange before they eventually

fall and with dozens of marvellous varieties available from nurseries and garden centres you’ll be spoilt for choice when picking one to add a little maple magic to your garden.

There’s a tardis effect in operation because the building (it’s the purple one) doesn’t look big from the outside but when you step through the door it just seems to keep on going - fifteen full kitchens on display over two floors and these are not just any kitchens.

“Some things don’t change. People still want quality, attention to detail and personal service”

So how do they compete against the multiples who dominate the market? “Most of our business is repeat business and personal recommendations” Paul explains. “People know Kitchen Discount specialise in Schuller (Kitchens for us and trust us. In the time we’ve been here we’ve Life), famous for their superb German design, style and seen Freeman Street change beyond recognition and engineering. They also provide a full design and project fashions in kitchens have changed too.” management service, taking care of everything from “When I started working with my dad the farmhouse style was all the rage but nowadays it’s all about clean lines plumbing and electrics to plastering and tiling. and minimalism. CUSTOMER SERVICE

CUSTOMER SERVICE We all love a bargain but price isn’t everything. We also like to feel that we’ve been treated in a way that makes us feel valued. After all we’re handing over our hard earned cash - we deserve to be treated properly. Don’t we? So here are some of our good friends in the local business community who we know will always offer great customer service and excellent value!

And because great customer service is one of those things that we all recognise but find hard to define, here are a few suggested ground rules for what makes it a pleasure doing business with companies that offer first class service. 1. BE PATIENT Even if customers seem to take forever over the smallest decision just bear in mind that you’re being paid to be there. Great service will beat fast service every time so let things progress at the customers’ pace or they’ll be out that door quick as the proverbial flash. 2. LISTEN This doesn’t just mean look as though you’re listening. It means actually listen to what the customer is saying. Follow their cues and pay attention to their body language as well. Is there something they’re not saying that you need to know? 3. COMMUNICATE CLEARLY Concentrate on getting across the information that customer needs to make an informed decision. Don’t hold back on anything essential but bear in mind that they don’t necessarily need your opinions.

4. EXPERTISE Whatever it is that you’re selling, know it inside out and back to front so you can answer any questions the customer might have. You don’t have to be able to build it from scratch – just be able to answer questions that a user might ask.

5. POSITIVITY The way you express yourself, the vocabulary you use, your overall demeanour – make a huge difference to your interactions with your customers. Be upbeat – try to make the decision process into something you can all feel good about.

THEATRE

A NIGHT OF MYSTERY PERFECT FOR ALL THRILLER FANS! When Chief Constable Jessica Bligh accompanies her friend Diane Tulliver home to Dysart Hall after a night at the opera they arrive to a horrifying scene. Diane’s husband Paul has been shot dead and ex-convict Charley Mirren is standing over him bearing a gun. It appears to be an open and shut case for Jessica Bligh, but as she probes further she discovers all is not what it seems and we soon find it is not just the murderer’s identity that is in question. Murder Weapon is an ingeniously plotted, highly tense thriller from Brian Clemens, creator of The Avengers and author of Inside Job, Without Trace and Strictly Murder.

CYCLING

TOP CYCLISTS GATHER TO COMPETE IN

TOUR DE YORKSHIRE 2018 LINCOLN FESTIVAL OF CYCLING

EIGHTEEN TEAMS RACE FOR YELLOW JERSEY

R

oad Racing season is fast approaching and there are two excellent events on the way that will bring some of the top riders in the sport to Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire over the next few weeks. The excitement kicks off with the Tour de Yorkshire which has been extended to a 4 day event, running from Thursday 3rd May to Sunday 6th May. The first stage, which is the easiest to attend for those of us on the south bank, starts in Beverley marketplace and heads off to the coast in Hornsea. The riders then head west again to tackle some of the most famous climbs on the Wolds before heading for the finish line in Doncaster. All in all that’s 182km or just under 114 miles in English money. There should be plenty of excitement because this year with reigning champion Serge Pauwels returning to God’s Own County to defend his title while 2016 victor Thomas Voeckler will also be present in an ambassadorial role. Pauwels wowed the crowd in 2017 with a successful attack on the concluding loop into Fox

Valley and took the victory by six seconds from his teammate Omar Fraile. There’s barely time for the excitement to settle down before we’re back in the saddle for the Lincoln Festival of Cycling, four days of exciting cycling events, including the Criteriums, Sportive, Uphill Dash, and the Men’s and Women’s Lincoln Grand Prix. This will be the 63rd annual running of the Grand Prix which for some years has been the oldest single day classic in the UK and the race starts and finishes in the Cathedral Square with the riders making 13 circuits of the 8 mile course. There are lots of excellent viewing places on the route and it should be a great day out. While we’re on the subject we thought we should point out that our good friend Steve Ettridge (see the page opposite) is a former winner of the Grand Prix, his victory coming in 1971 when the course covered 52 miles around South Common and Branston.

POWDER CHECK your vehicle for perfect peace of mind!

P O W D E R

What’s the dumbest thing you can do when setting out on a long journey? Believe it or not last summer over 2000 drivers had to be rescued because they had run out of fuel on the motorway! So before you set off a few basic checks – POWDER checks – are in order to make sure you arrive safely and on time. And if you’re not feeling confident you’ll find some excellent mechanics on these pages who’ll be glad to help.

Petrol: Make sure that you have enough for the journey and plan refuelling stops along the way to avoid mishaps. Oil: Check it when the engine is cold and the vehicle is level. Also check clutch, brake, and power steering fluids. Water: Radiator and windscreen washer bottles should be checked while parked on a level surface. Damage: Check bodywork, wheels and fixtures, including the mirrors. Ensure windows are clean inside and out. Electrics: Check all lights, indicators and hazards are in good working order and clean. Also test the horn. Rubber: Check tyre pressures and tread depth, and look for damage to the tyres and wheels and wiper blades.

IN THE KNOW

T

he bank holiday Weekend may have been a bit of a washout but there was at least one place in Cleethorpes that was full to the proverbial gunwales and that was Cleethorpes Leisure Centre which played host to the GEEKS Comic-Con. There were superheroes and anime characters, more Dr Whos than you can shake a sonic screwdriver at, TV personalities including Shawn from The Chase and Nasty Nick from Stenders plus a fantastic range of stalls selling everything from character models to some pretty authentic looking swords, demonstrations of virtual reality gaming and the chance to have your photo taken with some of your favourite characters. Great for fantasy fans of all ages and we’ll be getting our cape and tights pressed ready for next time.
