In 2016 they produced one of their most popular and raucous albums to date - Twisted Love - which they followed up in 2017 with a well received collection of blues standards White Trash Blues. With loads of attitude and a determination to make every night a party night The Quireboys bring arena style showmanship to everywhere they play and it promises to be a night to remember! Could you run a Ron-a-thon? ALL SET FOR THE MAYOR’S CHALLENGE 2018

I

t’s all systems go at the Town Hall as they get ready for the Ron-a-thon event, part of the Mayor’s Charity Challenge for 2018. This year the Mayor, Councillor Ron Shepherd has chosen to host and take up the challenge of a 12 hour ‘Ron-a-thon’ of non-stop exercise to raise funds for his charities, Linkage and the Carers Support Service. Booking is now open for those who’d like to take part, with 15 minute slots on exercise bikes and rowing machines available. Teams are encouraged to join in and they’re not looking for top athletes, just people who

want to have fun and bring in a small donation for the Mayor’s two charities – Linkage and The Carers Support Service. Under 16s are accompanied by an over 18 year old. There will also be classes and demonstrations as well as local businesses championing local health and wellbeing services. The challenge will run from 7am to 7pm on Friday 20th April and is open to the public to spectate or join in. Councillor Shepherd appealed to local individuals and businesses to get behind the challenge, saying “I’m really looking forward to this year’s Mayor’s challenge – I

think it’ll be a tough one though. I hope that lots of people from all walks of life come along and get involved in any way they can – even if they can only do fifteen minutes or so on a treadmill. It’s all for two good local causes. All people have to do is gather sponsorship and commit to doing a length of time, and then turn up at Grimsby Town Hall on the day and complete their challenge.” To find out more about this year’s Mayor’s Challenge, contact Tracy Frisby or Paul Wisken on 01472 314101 or paul.wisken@nelincs.gov.uk.

Welcoming guests at the launch Cllr Matt Patrick, portfolio holder for tourism, explained how the work over the next few years will enhance Cleethorpes. “Exciting times are ahead for North East Lincolnshire and nowhere more so thanCleethorpes, which is the ‘jewel in the crown’ in terms of our local tourism offer. The resort’s potential is significant and things are moving in the right direction. Visitor numbers to North East Lincolnshire have topped 10m a year for the first time ever. The economic impact of tourism in North East Lincolnshire has seen a significant increase – up by more than £23m over the previous year to a record high of £560m.” Lawrence Brown, Chair of CoastNEL added, “The Coastal Communities Funding is a unique opportunity to help us grow the quality of life offer for our investors, existing businesses and residents as well as our tourists. We want to use this award to build on the wave of confidence in Cleethorpes and the existing planned development as well as getting the public and businesses engaged in supporting the regeneration of the area.” As part of the Coastal Communities Fund being delivered by North East Lincolnshire Council over the next two years, grants totalling £170,000 are available to community and voluntary groups, major events organisers and businesses to put on events and activities in the Cleethorpes area in the next two years. The launch event saw the announcement of the first of these awards with funding allocated to the Armed Forces Major Events Team to enhance the Armed Forces weekend this year with an airshow to mark the 100th

anniversary of the Royal Air Force. Alex Baxter from the Armed Forces Major Events Team said: “Lincolnshire is considered the spiritual home of military aviation and as such should be a key part of the celebrations. To mark this, we want to deliver a first class air show event off the coast of Cleethorpes. We already have major sponsorship already in place, but this fund will allow us to deliver a great experience for visitor and residents, and help cement an air show in the future calendar of events for the resort.” Also celebrating a successful bid was Ebb and Flo, a local business on North Promenade in Cleethorpes, for a new event, “The Endless Summer” which will help promote the North Prom watersports scene and beach cleaning and provide plastic pollution education. The event will allow the general public to take part in a SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard) and Kayaking taster experience. It also aims to provide a general awareness of beach cleaning and plastic pollution. Judging by the enthusiasm on display at the launch event this certainly looks to be the start of an exciting period in the development of the resort and of the wider local area and we look forward to seeing the new events, artwork and building improvements in the future.

MUSIC

17

“I love touring. When I’m out there I feel that I’m in the right place.” The Peoples talks to Paloma Faith

T

here’s sure to be a fantastic turnout on Saturday 18th August when acclaimed UK singer songwriter Paloma Faith brings her hits old and new to Market Rasen Racecourse for a stunning open air performance which will certainly be one of the highlights of the summer season. As well as releasing a number one album in 2017 Paloma has also become a parent, which is just about the biggest event in anyone’s lives and when we talked to her we started out by asking how she was combining her work as a musician with the responsibilities of motherhood. “I’m trying to juggle being a mother and a singer. I have no idea how I’m managing, but I am somehow,” she laughs, “and I’m loving it.” The 36 year old Londoner has enjoyed an enviable career over the past decade that has seen her become the only female artist other than Adele to have three double platinum recordings to her name and while it’s been a road requiring plenty of hard graft, her artfully soulful sound and quirky style have undoubtedly played their part in propelling the Hackney born star to success. Her latest offering, The Architect, follows in its predecessors’ footsteps, showcasing her distinctive powerful vocals that have earned comparisons with everyone from 60s icons such as Etta James and Billie Holiday, through to the late Amy Winehouse. As she admits, she’s hoping her latest work, partly recorded in America, might yet crack the elusive holy grail of top slot in the album charts. If the slick, yet lyrically reflective lead single Crybaby is anything to go by, then the signs are indeed looking promising.

AUG

18

MUSIC It seems the singer is enjoying a comparatively settled phase of her life living with French boyfriend Leyman Lahcine, and it’s apparent that starting a family has directly influenced her music. “I do feel my approach to music has changed since I’ve become a parent. With difficult things that are happening in the world, you feel protective and want to make things comfortable for your family. I think things are changing in our history and maybe not for the better, which is something I’m concerned about.” Like any other artist in the limelight, her rise has come with the burden of being followed around by the ever hungry paparazzi. “I value my privacy more so than ever now and I want my child to know itself first rather than everyone else feeling that they know all about them.” Such determination to do things on her own terms has proved a consistent theme throughout her career, and something that has helped her stand out from the crowd. When she speaks about her childhood in East London she says that she always had something of a creative streak. However, it was far from obvious that she was destined to become a singer, with her initial studies being at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance. “Growing up in Hackney, I was surrounded by lots of different types of music - from my mum, I remember listening to plenty of revolutionary music from the 60s such as Bob Dylan, while my dad was really into jazz, which is where my interest in all that comes from. Later, when I was studying, I got into R&B dancehall as well, and originally I wanted to be dancer. Then I did my musical theatre, and I think that music just chose me.” From her early CV that spanned everything from being a life model, cabaret dancer and bartender, to a gig as a magician’s assistant, her rich experiences have offered plenty of tales and adventures to fuel her songwriting. As if to underline her determination, she famously walked out on a deal for a record contract when the agent watching her refused to stop texting on his phone. Needless to say, it was very much his loss, and the wider music industry’s gain, for Paloma then secured a major deal that set in motion her strikingly memorable debut album. Do You Want The Truth Or Something Beautiful? blazed a trail into the top 10, and proceeded to lodge in the album charts for the next 100 weeks. But how does she look back on it now? “Well, that was nearly 10 years ago, and it was what it was. But I think it is great that I’ve managed to sustain a career as unfortunately not many people get to make more than one or two albums these days,” reflects the singer on what she feels is now an over-saturated market. By her own admission, trying to sustain a fanbase and avoiding the trap of merely recreating a formula for previous hits has offered plenty of challenges, but she is not one to rest on her laurels, and ‘likes to mix things up a bit’ which is

19

certainly the case with her latest material. While her vocal abilities have continued to earn comparisons to the late Amy Winehouse, it’s something Paloma is entirely at ease with. “I’m flattered by comparisons to Amy. It’s not something I am offended by, though I am quite different. When she met me once, she asked if I played an instrument, but I said no, and she said that was a shame as she would really have liked someone like me in her group. I was a massive fan of hers, and after watching the documentary about her life, I actually wrote a song for her, Price Of Fame, which is on the new album. Her death was such a tragedy.” Her down to earth manner is a breath of fresh air in an industry awash with egos, and her willingness to give something back was seen with her time on The Voice series. Beyond being a vocal mentor, she was determined to help those under her wing with additional songwriting classes. As for her own career, having been nominated several times for a Brit Award, persistence paid off two years ago as she

claimed a long awaited win in the best female solo artist category. Being in an industry that is often quick to cast judgment, she felt there was a real sense of vindication in claiming the coveted accolade. “It was amazing to win the Brit Award and to finally gain some acknowledgement. I come from a long line of people that haven’t really been acknowledged for what they did. I think there are a lot of people out there doing important work, like doctors and nurses who don’t get that recognition they should.” There’s a big tour on the way. Does she still enjoy live performance? “The only reason I do what I’m doing is because I love touring. When I’m out there I ‘m excited and feel that I’m in the right place. Paloma Faith is at Market Rasen Racourse on Saturday 18th August. For more information visit www.thejockeyclub.co.uk.

GRIMSBY FISHING HERITAGE CENTRE COMMEMORATES TRAWLER TRAGEDY 65 YEARS SINCE THE LOSS OF THE GRIMSBY TRAWLER LEICESTER CITY

O

n March 22nd 1953 the Leicester City, one of the famous Consols Football Fleet, was returning home from the Iceland and Faroe fishing grounds when she ran aground off the coast of Hoy, Orkney. Most of the crew managed to escape in the trawler’s lifeboat but were soon after flung into the sea by a huge wave. Seven of the eighteen men on board died from exposure. One of the men lost in the tragedy was William Henry Westerman, a 48 year old husband and father and fireman aboard the Leicester City. He was one of several men washed up on the beach and taken to a nearby farmhouse where he later died. The Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre is commemorating the Leicester City and those who lost their lives with a temporary display of a remarkable artefact from the tragedy: a letter, written by one of the women involved in the rescue operation, and sent to the wife of William Westerman. It is to be displayed alongside William’s death certificate and a life ring from the Leicester City. The letter was written by Mary Ritch, who, along with several others, helped guide men to shore with their lamps before leading them to safety in a nearby farmhouse. Speaking in local paper The Orcadian, Mary Ritch said: “The men all seemed to be in a daze and some were clinging to the boat, seemingly reluctant to leave. They did not seem to realise that they has reached safety. We helped them up the rocks as best as we could. My sister led the way with a Tilley lamp. It was quite dark then.” A month after the incident Mary wrote a heartfelt letter to Mrs Westerman, sending her condolences and shedding some light on her husband’s final moments.

Dear Mrs Westerman, I saw your note of thanks in our local paper the Orcadian today and I’d like to let you know that we – my brother, sister and myself did all we could for your late husband. I saw the Leicester City when she went ashore as its just about 2 to 300 yards from our farm. I can assure you we did everything possible to alleviate the men’s suffering. We helped them up to our place and though artificial respiration was carried out on Mr Westerman for nearly two hours life was found to be extinct. Please accept our sympathy and sorrow for your great loss as believe me I too felt deeply at his passing especially when it happened so near to us. Please convey to the others who have lost their loved ones on the Leicester City our deep sympathy and regret. Skipper Johansen was most concerned about his men and though in great pain himself tried to help me care for those who were carried in. Again I can assure you your late husband died in careful and tender hands and all along was treated respectfully and reverently. Our sympathies and thoughts are with you and yours and all those who are bereaved. I am sincerely yours (Miss) Mary Ritch The letter and certificate were kindly donated by William Westerman’s son Peter (photograph left) in 2016. Louise Bowen, Collections Officer for North East Lincolnshire Museum Service said: “We were thrilled when Mr Westerman brought the letter and certificate to the museum for donation. This is just one of many tragic stories from our local fishing heritage and we are pleased to contribute to preserving the memory of those brave men who were lost.” The letter and other documents will be on display at the Fishing Heritage Centre from 22nd March to 29th April.

RINGS, WINGS AND SPINDLE WHORLS ARCHAEOLOGICAL TREASURES AND THE STORIES THEY TELL

V presenter and archaeologist Mary-Ann Ochota and storyteller Jason Buck will be presenting a fascinating event for history buffs on Sunday 22nd April at The Lawn in Lincoln featuring a unique journey through Britain’s history, telling stories inspired by historical artefacts from the iron age to World War 2. Weaving together fact, fiction and myth, Mary-Ann and Jason will reveal the intriguing, exciting and occasionally bizarre stories behind archaeological treasures from Lincolnshire and beyond, both famous and forgotten. So get ready for an evening of warriors and witches, love and loss, treasures hidden from the Nazis, Viking gods in

Saltfleetby, and a hungry cow in Navenby. There is also an opportunity to join Mary-Ann and Jason for an afternoon workshop Heritage Lincolnshire, a local charity based in Heckington, has organised the event to help celebrate their Layers of History project’s first birthday. During its first year, project staff and expert tutors have been showing volunteers how to appreciate and understand the historic landscapes around them and teaching them about landscape archaeology. Volunteers have enjoyed workshops from historic cookery to how to create an illuminated manuscript and have been taught how to undertake measured and geophysical surveys at Revesby’s Cistercian Abbey site and Freiston Shore’s military structures. The evening performance and afternoon workshop will take place at The Blue Room which is part of The Lawn complex in uphill Lincoln. Tickets are available from www.heritagelincolnshire.org

GRIMSBY ICE RINK ANNOUNCED AS FIRST STRONGER COMMUNITIES FUNDING RECIPIENTS

t doesn’t seem that long ago that the imminent closure of Grimsby Ice Rink was announced but thanks to the hard work and dedication of a group of volunteers who came together to take over the running of the venue it has gone strength to strength, with packed public sessions and thriving figure skating and hockey clubs. Now the group behind the success of rink have been unveiled as the first recipients of funding from the new Stronger Communities Fund which was established last year to replace Councillors ward funding, offering community groups and organisations the chance to bid for up to £10,000. The funding will be used to cover

some of the costs of installing a fire resistant barrier on the first floor of the building, meeting one of the stipulations of the original lease. Cllr Matthew Patrick, portfolio holder for finance, community assets, governance and tourism, said: “I was very impressed with the hard work and determination of the group when they originally secured the ice rink last August. Since then, they have begun to work on making the ice rink the huge success that it deserves to be, and hopefully this funding will help make that a reality. The Stronger Communities Fund has really come into its own here, and the ice rink is a very deserving recipient. They offer a huge range of sports

29

for people across the borough and have worked tremendously hard. Congratulations to the team at the Ice Rink.” Joanne Routh, Chair of the Board of Directors at Grimsby Ice Rink, said: “We’re really thrilled to receive this grant. This money is going to be spent on segregation works, which will help us to secure the license. We’ve been very busy over the last few months. We have three adult hockey teams that use the ice rink, along with a great big youth hockey club which is one of the oldest in the UK. Alongside that, we have a figure skating academy, and plenty of regular users.” from left: Councillor Matthew Patrick, portfolio holder for finance and community assets, Joanne Routh, Chair of the Board of Directors at Grimsby Ice Rink and Councillor Jane Hyldon-King, portfolio holder for health and wellbeing

REMEMBER ME? A NEW SUE STONE RETROSPECTIVE OPENS AT THE HERITAGE CENTRE

T

24 15 TO

FROM

here’s a fascinating new exhibition at the Heritage Centre that will enthral visitors with a love of Grimsby and its fishing traditions, textile enthusiasts and anyone who loves great pictures that tell complex stories. Remember Me? is a retrospective view of the work of textile artist and 62 Group member Sue Stone. Sue studied Fashion Design at St Martin’s School of Art and then Textiles and Embroidery at Goldsmiths College, London and spent her career as a clothing designer before returning to work as a figurative artist in 2006. Her work is created with a combination of hand and free machine stitch, appliqué, needle weaving and some paint and the pieces on display are a fascinating cross-section of her work over the past ten years. Many feature family portraits or scenes from the docks and other areas of town linked to the fishing industry and although the gaze of the subjects is remarkably frank and direct there are frequent elements in the images that imbue them with an intriguingly dark surreality. Woman cradle fish in their laps, stroking them like children or house cats. Or they wear the fish as a belt. Or hang them from the washing line. A pair of newlyweds (actually it’s Sue and her husband) gaze out of the frame like Grant Wood characters. Smartly dressed women from the 1930s walk the dystopian streets of East London, striding purposefully past high walls of graffiti in Grimsby Street. Wherever you look you’ll find more tiny details to amuse and fascinate and if you’re planning to attend then you’d better set aside plenty of time because this is an exhibition you’ll want to MAR JUL take your time viewing. Remember Me? is at the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre from 24th March to 15th July 2018. Admission is free.

“blistering fretwork and some soulful blues passion” The Kris Barras Band & Blackwater Conspiracy at The Yardbirds

I

f there’s a style of music where the UK has the most strength in depth it’s probably blues rock and down at The Yardbirds there’s proof of the genre’s enduring vitality and popularity as a full house turns out for County Tyrone’s Blackwater Conspiracy and The Kris Barras Band, all the way from sunny Devon. Blackwater Conspiracy were formerly known as Million Dollar Reload but changed their name and style of music halfway through a gig. Their style of southern blues has elements of country and recalls the early days of The Black Crowes, The Quireboys or Main Street Stones and last year they delivered highly regarded slots at Download and Ramblin’ Man so their star is definitely on the rise. They’ve got a big, swaggering sound, with a great rhythm section, raspy vocals from Phil Conalane, all underpinned by Kevin Brennan’s swirling keyboards. Picking favourites is difficult but President Joe is a fine slow burner, and A Penny For Your Dirty mind is a fantastic wig out material. The set ends on a high with 85 Rockstar, an invocation to “Live fast and leave something beautiful” which seems like as rock and roll a motto as I’ve heard in a long time. Barras has one of the most relaxed stage demeanours you’ve seen, a hugely muscled and inked frame that gives a clue to his former profession as a Mixed Martial arts fighter and a guitar technique that evokes memories of the great Gary Moore as well as greats including The Stones and Led Zeppelin and Howlin’ Wolf and contemporary bands

like Black Stone Cherry. Barras took up the guitar at the age of nine, with the encouragement of his bass player father and one of the most affecting songs on the night is Watching Over Me is a moving and heartfelt tribute to Barras’ late father, who set him on the road to the blues and played in the band for many years. The setlist is drawn from all three of the band’s albums but particularly from this year’s The Divine And Dirty which is at number 3 in the official Blues charts at the time of writing. It’s a great piece of work by the way, with some fine songwriting and featuring some of the most stylish guitar licks you’ve heard in a long time. Highlights include a gospel infused Hail Mary, the southern blues inflected Kick Me Down and a cover of All Along The Watchtower which manages to shrug off all the baggage with which the song is burdened as Barras makes it his own. On the subject of covers, the band’s reworking of T-Bone Walker’s Stormy Monday is something to treasure, proving it was needed that barras isn’t just a fine guitarist, he’s also got a powerful and expressive set of pipes on him too with more than a hint of Bon Jovi rasp about them.

Blackwater Conspiracy and The Kris Barras Band are on tour until April 8th and if you get the chance and you love the blues then you should go make sure you’re there.

he bank holiday Weekend may have been a washout but there was at least one place in Cleethorpes that was full to the proverbial gunwales on Saturday and that was Cleethorpes Leisure Centre which played host to the GEEKS Comic-Con. Possibly the bad weather helped drag a few extra people in but the number and standard of costumes on parade was anything to go by not many people had turned up by accident. There were superheroes and anime characters, more Dr Whos than you can shake a sonic screwdriver at, TV personalities including Shawn from The Chase and Nasty Nick from Stenders plus a fantastic range of stalls selling everything from character models to some pretty authentic looking swords, demonstrations of virtual reality gaming and the chance to have your photo taken with some of your favourite characters. Great for fantasy fans of all ages and we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for the next one!

“timeless music, a masterclass in classic rock and roll The Quireboys at The Yardbirds

MUSIC

T

he Quireboys don’t do subtle. What they do is full on in your face rock and roll and they do it bloody well. Their reputation as a live band is second to none but they’ve also released a couple of well received albums in the last couple of years with White Trash Blues, a collection of standards from the repertoires of the likes of Chuck Berry and John Lee Hooker being a particular favourite in our house. They’re regular visitors to Grimsby and their set at The Yardbirds opens with one of my personal favourites - Too Much Of A Good Thing, from 2013’s Beautiful Curse which sets the scene for the evening, plenty of classics, a few new ones and surprisingly few from White Trash, considering that this is listed as the album’s European Tour. It doesn’t matter too much though because the truth is that The Quireboys haven’t changed their sound a whole lot over the past thirty or so years and songs from their 1990 debut A Bit Of What You Fancy sit seamlessly alongside more recent material and it all sounds like it was ripped by main force from the 1970s heyday of British rock music. This is timeless music. If you were determined to be mardy about it you could say that they’re a band who haven’t developed much in three decades but you could also say that if you’re that good at what you do why change things around? Spike is on fine form, the celebrated whispering rasp is as good as ever and we are reminded early on that we are in the presence of one of the all time great microphone stand jugglers but what’s a little bit of false ceiling damage among friends? It’ll fix easy enough. He’s a force of nature, roaming the stage, playing the crowd, dancing on his own or with the band, bandannaed as always, the piratical effect accentuated by a long scarf and one velcro sea boot. Curiously enough the last time I photographed The Quireboys he had a broken leg as well, on that occasion caused by a heavy tackle in a game of football (that’s soccer to some of you) against giants of British metal, Saxon. He’s not the only one set for a good time - the whole band look like they’re ready for a party. Guy Griffin’s guitar is the

45

perfect foil as always, particularly on Going Down and This Is Rock And Roll which feels like a stadium filler in need of a stadium and sets the walls and furniture buzzing. They’re the just the band for a proper dark and sweaty rock club like the Yardbirds. Highlights include a raucous 7 O’Clock and I Don’t Love You Any More (obviously) but also a gorgeously sleazy cover of Slim Harpo’s King Bee, with Keith Weir’s honky tonk piano a driving force and Sleepy John Estes’ Leavin’ Trunk. They round things up with Sweet Mary Ann and Sex Party which is about as good a singalong finale as you could wish for and we’ll be keeping an eye on the website to check that they’re making their annual visit again next year.

ARTS

THE PLAY WITHIN A PLAY’S THE THING The play within a play is a device beloved of writers from Shakespeare onwards and seldom has it been used to such marvellously humourous effect as in Play On, Rick Abbotts 1980s love letter to the world of amateur theatre. As the company assemble to rehearse their new murder mystery Murder Most Foul it seems that everything that can go wrong will go wrong - from an unfinished script to unlearned lines and worse. The show is hilariously amateurish, the ‘murder mystery’ plot doesn’t really have a murder, and when the author decides to give a speech on the state of the modern theatre during the curtain calls, the audience is treated to a madcap climax and a thoroughly hilarious romp. Even the sound effects reap their share of laughter.

iovanni Pernice first came to our attention in 2015 when he joined the professional team on Strictly, reaching the final in his first year on the show. Since then he’s become a firm favourite with the fans and one of the UK’s most popular dancers, performing in the Strictly arena tour and taking his own annual dance spectacular on the road. He’s at Grimsby Auditorium on April 30th with this year’s show, entitled Born To Win. We got to talk to him during a break from rehearsals. The Peoples: Good afternoon. You’re appearing at Grimsby Auditorium on the 30th April and I can tell you that we’re all looking forward to the show. We came to Dance Is Life last year and we had some prize winners in the audience and we all thought it was fantastic. GP: That’s good. It’s always nice to hear that the audience is happy with our performance. That’s what keeps us going from show to show. It makes it all worthwhile. You were born in Sicily but moved to Bologna to pursue a career in dance and nowadays you spend a lot of time in the United Kingdom.

Yes. I moved to England three years ago although I like to go back to Italy sometimes for a visit. I love living here though but I was in Italy for Christmas which was very nice too.

around. I’ve won for the last two years and it would be nice to make it three.

You joined Strictly in 2015 - that must have been an exciting time. Since then you’ve partnered That sounds good. I think perhaps Georgia May Foote, and Laura we should all spend Christmas in Whitmore in 2016 and of course in 2017 you danced with Debbie Italy. You made your name as a latin dance specialist. What’s the McGee. Are you allowed to tell me who was your favourite? special appeal of latin dance? I studied latin and ballroom but I won the Italian championship as a latin dancer. I was drawn in that direction because it’s more fun, more cheeky. It suits my personality. You’re also the world champion at jive kicks and flicks and Charleston swivels. Do you have any more record attempts planned? Not at the moment. There’s a championship once every year and we’ll be ready when that comes

so when it came to the Saturday night performances. Lots of us expected you to win. Did you expect to win?

Well once we were in the final then of course you put everything into winning - all four couples feel that way - but arriving in the final is already a big achievement. By staying in the competition until the final it means that you have danced all of the dances Well it’s really nice to have a different and that’s what it’s all about. It’s about having the chance to make the public partner each year. everything worked. The music, the lighting, the choreography, the costumes. It all came together. The atmosphere in the studio was great. It all made for a real good dance. Has planning already started for the 2018 show? Not yet. We find out in June if we’re back. You’ve been on the Strictly tour. Is it hard work? It’s not hard. We perform a full two hour show in the arena, in front of 14 thousand people, so it’s always a fantastically exciting event. There are thousands of people chanting your name. The atmosphere and the adrenaline carry you through. You brought your show dance Is Life to Grimsby last year and it was hugely popular. It’s always a good night in Grimsby and the Auditorium is a really nice place. Before I was doing my own show I used to come to Grimsby to appear in Kevin and Karen Clifton’s shows. And what can we expect from the new show? Well it’s a brand new show called Born To Win. Last year was about the differences and similarities between the UK and Italy, this year it’s more about the story of my life, right back to Sicily and Bologna and then coming to England and joining Strictly. I have Luba Mushtuk with me, she’s a fantastic dancer and choreographer and an excellent cast. And our choreographer and director is Jason Gilkison, who has the same role on Kevin and Karen’s show. That sounds like a guarantee of quality - we’ll look forward to seeing the show in April. Thank you for being nice to interview and have a great tour. Thank you and we’ll see Grimsby soon.

TOP TOWN .... new cinema, bars and restaurants and lots of new retail - things are looking up for

TOP TOWN

Not so long ago you could have been forgiven for thinking that Top Town was on it's way out. Shop closures, especially those of major chains like Woolies and BHS had sucked the colour and vitality out of he area and it was looking generally run down and a bit tatty. In the past couple of years things have definitely changed for the better however, with new retail outlets opening up, smart new bars and restaurants and of course the prospect of a major new entertainment and nine screen cinema complex on the old bus station. It’s a project that promises to bring families back into the town centre and the saving of the Barge means that the area will have the best of both worlds - new and traditional right next to each other.

MUSIC

Lisa Stansfield delivers a seamless blend of classic 90’s soul and new songs at Scunthorpe Baths She hasn’t always had the easiest of relationships with the music industry but with a new album, Deeper, arriving to critical acclaim and the first single, Billionaire getting plenty of airplay, Lisa Stansfield is back in style and judging by the quality of her show at Scunthorpe Baths Hall on April 14th she’s back to stay. Support comes from Israeli singer songwriter Irit and her band. Her style is a mixture of folk, jazz and middle eastern harmonies and while she may be a Marmite artist I’m definitely won over. Her own songs are a tumble of lyrics and imagery so that you have to concentrate hard first time around, but Shoes is a particular highlight as is her cover of The Bee Gees’ To Love Somebody.

Just as Deeper sticks to tried and trusted 90s soul styles, Lisa Stansfield’s set is a mix of classics and new stuff and they all sit together seamlessly because Stansfield, the foremost British soul voice of her generation knows just what she’s best at and makes the most of it. She’s not big on chit chat, apart from a few endearingly self-deprecating gags but let’s be honest we didn’t come to hear her talk. Her voice is as powerful, emotionally true and distinctively northern as ever, strong and sweet and subtle by turns and if the crowd at this show are anything to go by she probably has as large and dedicated a following as she did in her heyday. It’s pretty much a full house and corny as it might sound, it’s difficult to overstate the

MUSIC

amount of love in the room. Before she has even taken to the darkened stage there’s a shout of Happy Birthday Lisa and it’s only a couple of songs later that things pause for a community singalong of the full version. Then there are the shouts of “We love you Lisa”, not unique to this show I’ll grant you, but what’s surprising is the sheer number of them and I don’t think I’ve ever heard things get competitive with shouts of “But we love you more!” With a top quality nine piece band behind her there’s a huge range of musical styles on display from the deft melodrama of Hole In My Heart to rock and roll torch song Hercules, and when called upon for solos they deliver in style, particularly with a blistering saxophone break on Butterflies.

The show opens with two from the new album, Everything and the title track, and an early highlight is a fantastic cover of Barry White’s Never Ever Gonna Let You Go. She’s quick to insist that whatever the house rules on the subject might be this is a night for dancing and nobody needs telling twice. There aren’t many moments after that where most are people are seated. Of course All Around The World has everybody up and dancing and the show winds up with Live Together, which slides neatly into a cover of Candi Staton’s Young Hearts Run free which ensure that everybody leaves singing.

HOMES

Is your home a money pit or a nice little earner?

Time was that people mostly climbed the property ladder by moving from house to house but nowadays there’s a tendency to stay put and improve what you’ve got. But if you’re going to turn your property into a building site you need to do some serious research before you commit. What will it cost? What value will it add? Where do I start? Step one is to sort out any existing problems. Fix any leaks in the roof, damp, structural cracks to walls, dry rot, missing or broken roof tiles, and any chimney problems. And don’t overlook the small things either. Sort out any peeling paint, squeaking doors, jammed or damaged windows, broken door latches, dripping taps, loose tiles. Give walls a lick of paint, sand floors, reseal baths and showers, declutter. If you need more space then consider all your options - expanding up, down and sideways! Loft conversions are one of the best value home projects you can choose to invest in and they’re the easiest way to add a bedroom or a bathroom. Garages and basements are ripe for conversion too and if you love your garden but want more indoor space, consider building a conservatory on to the back of the house, blurring the lines between outdoors and

HOMES indoors and creating a versatile and bright space for all the family to use. If you’re planning to sell then it’s worth smartening up the exteriors and garden because they’re the first things that potential purchasers will see when they arrive and although it might be unfair, first impressions do count for a lot. Tidying up your grey looking drive or patio may well pay dividends when it comes to making a sale.

If you’ve got money to spend then remember that a new kitchen or bathroom is important to many buyers but there’s no need to spend thousands. Keep it simple with new doors, handles and surfaces or a good quality plain suite. There’s no point in putting in something that you love if the buyers are just going to rip it out as soon as they move in.

motoring DON’T DROP YOUR GUARD! STAY READY FOR MORE BEASTS FROM THE EAST!

W

ell as we go to print the beast from the east is slinking away to the west and storm Emma is petering out and all in all it seems like we got off fairly easy here on the south bank. But of course that doesn’t mean that the winter is done with us yet - there’ll be more cold weather before summer comes striding in looking all suntanned and eating choc ices. And that means more driving in terrible conditions with all its attendant risks, so it’s a good time for a quick refresher on the key elements of safe winter driving. First of all make sure your car is in good order. Have it serviced, make sure levels are good, check your tread depth. If there are any problems with your motor this is the time of the year that will expose them. Second important point - anticipation. Look well ahead for potential hazards

– including, of course, patches of ice – and keep your speed well down. Accelerate, brake, steer and change gear as smoothly as possible to reduce the risk of a skid. Using a higher gear may aid grip on packed ice because it makes it easier to get traction. In a manual vehicle, you might need to slip the clutch a little to prevent the car from stalling. Many automatics will let you select second gear at a standstill to pull away in which avoids wheel spin. Braking distances can increase tenfold on ice compared with a dry road so you should leave up to 10 times the normal recommended gap between you and the car in front. Remember that tyres grip less efficiently in cold conditions. So even if the temperature is above zero and there’s no ice on the road, you should take extra care. Winter tyres offer more grip and can significantly increase performance in icy conditions

AND OF COURSE KEEP AN EYE OPEN FOR BLACK ICE!

Black ice is a thin layer of ice on the road surface. Because it is smooth and transparent, it appears the same colour as the road below. It can be almost invisible to drivers, which makes it particularly dangerous. So if the temperature is low and the road surface looks wet, be careful and drive with extra caution. You may see it glinting in the sunlight, or spot cars ahead swerving for no obvious reason. However, it’s likely you won’t see black ice at all, so be particularly cautious on shaded stretches of road, bridges, flyovers and tunnels – anywhere the surface temperature may be lower, in fact. Quiet roads are also more likely to be affected so try sticking to major highways as far as possible.
