May Bank Holiday is drawing near and that means the arrival of trainloads of musicians, instruments and apple juice at the Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway for the Folk and Cider Festival. This year will be the 8th running of the event and there’s a

terrific line up of artists in place plus Morris dancing all weekend. It all takes place from 28th to 30th May and there’ll be music from the likes of Paul Liddell, Beverley singer songwriter Katie Spencer, Sheffield’s very own Jack’s Rake and Sunday headliners The Band From County Hell. With more than a hundred ciders to try there’ll be plenty to raise the spirits even of people who hate music so for a great weekend head down to the Light Railway station near Meridian Park. There’s something new on the way for animal lovers and parents with the development of a new series of nature themed stories for kids from the pen of godfather of Grimsby punk James Elliot. Isaac And The Newt wasdeveloped from James’ own love of wildlife and his regular visits to local nature reserves with his son, (also called Isaac by coincidence) and he has teamed up with illustrator Damian Quinn to create what is hoped to be the first of a series of stories that will help young people discover and appreciate nature. LOCAL HISTORY

In the summer of 1904 one of the most famous showmen in the world camped with his huge travelling show on the edge of town. Nearby a party was getting underway to celebrate the opening of the new Grant Thorold park. It was a windy day and what happened next is one of the strangest incidents in the history of the town.

When Buffalo Bill came to the rescue in The Wild East Marsh

magine the astonishment on the face of Mr. S Revell, the proprietor of the Dock Dining Rooms on Cleethorpe Road, Grimsby, on one particular morning in the year of 1891, when several real Wild West Indians and a few Mexicans came walking through the door of his business, sat down and then asked what was on the menu? And the reason for this amazing event is situated somewhere out in the middle of the River Humber. After a successful tour of the Continent, The Buffalo Bill Wild West Show is now lying at anchor very close to the Grimsby Dock but because of the strict quarantine laws of the day they need permission to come ashore. So Mr. Loft, the quarantine officer of the day was rowed out to the waiting ship in order to survey the situation. In particular there was concern as to one of the Bison on board the vessel, which had not only recently given birth to its young but, it was also mentioned, had killed three men. It looked like Mr. Loft was going to have his work cut out but to his great satisfaction, Mr William Cody, or Buffalo Bill as he was known, was given permission to bring his entourage ashore. As soon as the ship docked the task of unloading a Wild West Extravaganza began, at Tower Island (close to the Dock Tower). There was an almost uncountable amount of animals and more than one Stagecoach and they were loaded onto more than forty five wagons supplied by the Manchester, Sheffield

and Lincolnshire Railway. The destination for the show was Leeds, so while the animals and a couple of

the docks hoping to catch William 'Buffalo Bill' Cody or a look at a real life ‘red indian’ and many people were heard to say how “Quite magnificent they looked in their dress.” The show was soon thundering its way through the East Marsh and out of town but not before the Wild West Show’s management gave their thanks to the local workforce who had helped to bring the show on shore. At the end of June 1904 Buffalo Bill returned to Grimsby once more only this time he was here to entertain the people of the town. Five special trains, made up of more than sixty long American style carriages were shunted into the West Marsh sidings, sixteen of which were for sleeping. It was said that the combined length of the trains was almost a mile. By five the unloading had begun starting with some two hundred heavy horses and just Stagecoaches were being unloaded before six o’clock an Indian was seen more than a few of the Red Indians emerging from his sleeping quarters decided to go and take a look around wrapped in a blanket. dining tent to accommodate more than 500 people was erected and ten cooks set to work. Within two hours two more tents and stabling for five hundred horses had been erected and a mad scramble for tickets had begun. There was just one minor snag. Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show was going to coincide with another major

event, the opening of Grant Thorold Park. It seemed like bad luck but as it turned out it was serendipity itself. On the day of the opening a large marquee was erected in the park but during the course of the day the wind got up and it soon became clear that the structure was about to blow away. Word reached the Wild West Show and they immediately sent Fred Hutchinson, one of Buffalo Bill’s managers and some canvas men to the rescue. In the interests of safety it was soon decided to take down the Marquee and take the luncheon in the open air and within minutes the canvas men had very quickly and expertly stored the whole Marquee away. The Wild West show was a roaring success, covering a staggering one and a half acres, the audience went on to witness a show which contained more than 300 people on horseback, sharp shooting and lasso displays and, to great applause, Buffalo Bill himself, giving a riding and a shooting display. Nobody could have imagined however that a surprise treat that came with the show would stir up the whole country

… that treat was popcorn, and it was so popular that in the year after the show came to the country more than three tons were sold! The Deadwood Stage coming under attack was also very well received feature, as was the spectacular recreation of the fall of General Custer, at The Battle of the Little Big Horn, with Sitting Bull’s real life son, Willie, playing the part of his Father. Almost as soon as the show had ended, everything was quickly packed away and very soon the memory of Buffalo Bill’s appearance in Grimsby would begin to fade into the mists of time, as would the setting for this amazing spectacular all of which took place on a bare looking corner at Wellington Street and Park Street at a place called Fiveways. ...and almost 130 years later Care4All aim

to commemorate the events of 1891 with a new Wild West themed pocket park!

hen Grant Thorold Library closed its doors last year it looked like another important community facility would be lost for good but instead the premises were taken over by Care4All and Your Community Hub who have not only kept the library running (and signed up nearly 300 new users in the process) but have added a clothing boutique, a cyber cafe and a display area for local crafters to sell their wares. Computers are available to use free for the first half hour and for 50p per hour after that and there’s a direct link to the Job Centre so people can check on vacancies quickly and easily. There’s also a wide range of activity groups including a senior citizens IT club on Tuesday mornings, Family History (every Friday morning - £2 per session) and a kids story group on Tuesdays between 10am and 11am. Future plans include new cafe premises at the back of the building with an ice cream stall for those long, hot summer days and in addition to all their good work indoors Care4All have also been awarded £15,000 of government funding for the creation of a pocket park in which will feature flowers, trees and a pond and will provide a focal point for children and adults looking to enjoy proximity to nature in an urban environment. The park will be named after Buffalo Bill in honour of the all American hero who saved the day all those years ago. Care4All also provide services such as Meals On Wheels, delivering hundreds of hot meals to people all over the town every day, Personal Assistant Support Solutions and the catering for the new Strand Court Extra Care Housing facility. If you’d like to get involved with Care4All as a volunteer you can contact them through their website or on Facebook. You’ll be made very welcome and maybe you can do your bit to help commemorate the day Buffalo Bill rode to the rescue on the East Marsh.

Deities At The Bottom Of The Garden

uring April and May, Grimsby Minster will be hosting the first of a series of free exhibitions as part of the Art In The Minster programme, supported by Arts Council England.

The first exhibition Deities At The Bottom Of The Garden features the work of artist Richard Bartle and is brought to the town by ‘our big picture ltd’ in partnership with Grimsby Minster and 20-21 Visual Arts Centre, Scunthorpe. Richard Bartle is a contemporary artist living in Sheffield who makes

sculptures, installations, videos and paintings about society, current affairs, religion and politics. Originally created to respond to the former church building housing 20-21 Visual Arts Centre in Scunthorpe, the piece consists of twelve scale model garden sheds, each with an interior modelled on the worship place of a different world religion. Each sculpture has been extensively researched and is lovingly hand crafted, wherever possible using the same materials that would be used in their life size counterparts. Details include hand woven rugs, painted ceilings, hand turned furniture and glass light fittings. The work reduces the usually grand architecture of churches to a more private space, inviting the viewer to make their own minds up about what it is to have faith and the differences and similarities between differing beliefs and cultures. Deities at the Bottom of the Garden runs until 21st May, Tuesday to Saturday 9.30am to 2.30pm in the Lady Chapel in Grimsby Minster. Admission free.

December 2016 to January 2017 THE CHANDELIER OF LOST EARRINGS by the artists Sagar and Campbell The chandelier stands 2.5m tall a sculpture made from over 3,000 single earrings donated by owners who have lost the other half of the pair. The women who contributed items to the project also shared, via letters, the story attached to it, revealing why the earrings were so meaningful to them and these stories have become part of the artwork’s legacy.

Ordinalia is a film triptych shown in three large maritime lanterns surrounded by seven smaller film loops on a variety of boat and train lamps.

7. BE PERCEPTIVE Learn to read your customers. Body language is important here but you won’t always be face to face. Look and listen for subtle clues about their current mood, patience level, personality and you’ll go far in keeping your customer interactions positive.

2. LISTEN This doesn’t just mean look as though you’re listening. It means actually listen to what the customer is saying. Follow their cues and pay attention to their body language as well. Is there something they’re not saying that you need to know? 3. COMMUNICATE CLEARLY Concentrate on getting across the information that customer needs to make an informed decision. Don’t hold back on anything essential but bear in mind that they don’t necessarily need your opinions. 4. EXPERTISE Whatever it is that you’re selling, know it inside out and back to front so you can answer any questions the customer might have. You don’t have to be able to build it from scratch – just be able to answer questions that a user might ask. 5. POSITIVITY The way you express yourself, the vocabulary you use, your overall

HOMES AND GARDENS The concept of the lawn originated in Europe where the mild and wet climate is particularly suited to grass growing and seems to have derived from the mediaeval habit of cutting down all the trees around a castle or other fortification so as to remove hiding places for attackers to use. By the 16th century their use had become almost exclusively ornamental although they were more commonly planted with chamamile or thyme than with grass. It took another hundred years for turf to become popular and having large well kept lawns was a sign of great wealth because of numbers of gardeners required to keep them trimmed. Paintings from the European Renaissance of the 15th century show private ornamental lawns and by the 16th century, elaborate formal gardens were an essential feature of the homes of the elite. The impulse that made the lawn popular for smaller and less grand homes was probably the Victorian fashion for outdoor games, particularly golf, cricket, bowls, croquet, badminton and of course tennis, all of which require a smooth

surface, hard wearing enough to be played on but forgiving enough that contact with the ground does not inevitably lead to bloodshed. The first mechanical lawn mower was invented by Edwin Beard Budding in 1830, allowing extensive use of mowed grass for less affluent people and by 1890 mass production of mechanical mowers made them available to the public at an affordable price. And so the lawn spread into suburbia and twentieth century inventions such as weed free grass seed and selective weed killers helped to make them viable in small sizes and with much less work than had formally been required. By the 1950s a patch of grass was an essential part of any garden. The new inventions also helped redefine what was lawn and what was a weed. Clover, for example, had always been a welcome part of the lawn because it put nitrogen into the soil, which benefitted the grass. With the invention of selective weed killers (which killed clover because of its leaf area) the plant was redefined as a weed and its elimination as a benefit. Of course nowadays with robot

f you’re looking for the perfect plant to create a focal point in your garden then you should take a look at the Japanese Maple.

They’re the perfect choice of tree for any small, compact or courtyard garden and will put on a show throughout the year, starting as soon as foliage unfurls in spring and continuing until their autumn transformation, when they shimmer in shades of gold and bronze before their leaves eventually fall. There are lots of varieties of Japanese Maple including members of the species Acer japonicum, Acer palmatum, Acer shirasawanum and others but what they all have in common is a natural shape and growing habit that makes them an ideal choice of small tree for gardens or growing in large patio pots. Their leaf shapes, sizes and colours vary immensely. Many have a broad palm shape, but these are often divided and dissected into the most delicate and intricate of forms. Add to this their wide range of colours, from deep greens to yellow, gold, purple or even variegated patterns and you have huge variety to choose from. And once you’ve started with Japanese maples you’ll find that you’ll want to add new varieties to your collection until you have an acer arboretum of your very own. Top maples for any garden include Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood', Acer palmatum ‘Osakazuki', Acer palmatum ‘Sango-Kaku' and Golden Shirasawanum maple (Acer shirasawanum ‘Aureum') but you’ll find your own favourite. Maples prefer a sheltered site where trees are protected from late spring frosts, cold winds and scorching summer sun and well drained soil containing plenty of compost to lock in moisture and ensure the ground never dries out. For growing in containers choose large and stable terracotta pots with several drainage holes in their base. Line the pots with a sheet of plastic before filling with compost to reduce water loss through the sides. They need space to flourish and are frequently planted in combination with azalea, ferns, flowering cherries and plums, hydrangeas and wisteria.

irst opened in 1936, Grimsby Central Hall is the oldest surviving continuously in use concert venue in North East Lincolnshire and yet, for many, remains an undiscovered gem. Step through the somewhat featureless doors in Duncombe Street and, like crossing the threshold of the Tardis, an expanded world unravels before you. You’ll encounter a 700 seat auditorium that retains original art deco features and offers the finest acoustics in the area. If you place your ear to the wall, you may just hear the lingering echoes of some legendary performers. During its 75 year history, the Central Hall has hosted concerts by an amazing array of world class artists, reflecting a diversity of entertainment - from swing bands to brass bands, rock groups to classical recitals, jazz, choral, orchestral and stage musicals. he AA have warned drivers to be aware of the rise of a new kind of road hazard - the pedestrian who is so intent on their mobile phone conversation they simply step out into the road, regardless of traffic - the Smombie (see what they did there?). According to their research most drivers have had experience of a smombie near miss and the creatures are thought be responsible for between 15 and 20 accidents a day, as insurers increasingly see explanations such as - ‘Person on phone stepped out, wasn’t looking’ and ‘He walked into the side of the car’ Experts are advising caution but suggest that using a sharpened spike to destroy the creatures brains is probably going too far. The smombie phenomenon is just part of a wider trend towards the use of communication technology while on the move. A Dazzling Coat Of Many Colours Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Grimsby Auditorium April 12th 2016

t was a splendid night at the Auditorium on Tuesday as a new revival of Joseph, directed and produced by Bill Kenwright, came to town, bursting with energy and full of great tunes, holding the audience spellbound and building to a terrific climax with almost the whole Auditorium up and dancing. The first Lloyd Webber and Rice musical to be performed publicly Joseph isn’t a perfect piece of work but it had enough original melodies among the pastiche, and sufficient dry wit to show that the fledgling team had the potential to be something special. In a show whose main schtick is wilful anachronism Rice cracks some great jokes, not just with an Elvis Pharaoh and calypso Canaanites but also with sharp wordplay like Joseph’s explanation of the fat cows thin cows dream “All these things you saw in your pyjamas, Were a long range forecast for your farmers.” Got to love that. Joe McElderry approached the role of Joseph with huge enthusiasm and if anyone had any doubts about the vocal qualities of TV talent show contestants they were settled right from the start, both by his opening rendition of Any Dream Will Do and by the arrival of Lucy Kay as the narrator. (Note for those who don’t watch McElderry won the X-Factor in 2009, seeing off Olly Murs and Stacey Solomon in the final while Kay is a classically trained singer who was runner up in last year’s Britain’s Got Talent.)

Special mention too to Emilianos Stamatakis who made the most of his scene stealing role as The Pharaoh and to Henry Metcalfe who doubled up as Jacob and Potiphar. Staging, costumes and choreography were all excellent and a special mention should go to the sixty or so young performers from Stagecoach Theatre School who had worked hard for three months under the direction of Diana Whitworth to be ready for a show whose set they didn’t see until the afternoon of the showday! How did it feel to be on the stage with Joe McElderry? Fantastic seemed to be the universal response. “It’s been great” said Maisie Bebbington, 14, “and it’s made me much more confident. It’s something I shall remember forever.” It’s not the longest musical in the world but that was more than made up for by the willingness of the cast to perform a high energy reprise which seemed to include most of the songs from the show and had the entire audience up and dancing. Great fun all round and if you didn’t make it to the Auditorium for this one, well you missed out on a real treat!
