Apart from the occasional major storm it’s not been too bad a summer and our garden is looking lovely, even if we do say so ourselves. There are some words of wisdom about how to use grasses in a garden design that we may well take on board and we’re also thinking about going for the contemporary classic look in the living room which may lead to some interesting design decisions. Some terrific local events on the way, including a visit to the Auditorium by Texas, one of our very favourite bands. We’ll see you again in October - have a happy autumn!

uyers can secure a brand new home with just a 5% deposit at Westleigh Homes’ popular Humberston Meadows development in Humberston, thanks to the government-backed Help to Buy Equity Loan scheme.

Help to Buy Equity Loans at Humberston Meadows

The scheme is designed to help make a mortgage more achievable for those who are looking for a new home, from first-time buyers to existing homeowners looking to upsize. Any home up to the value of £600,000 can be purchased with a Help to Buy Equity Loan, provided the buyer will be living in it and does not own a second property. The loan will cover up to 20% of the home’s value, allowing the buyer to reduce the size of the mortgage they require to as little as 75% with a 5% deposit. No repayments are due on the Equity Loan within five years of completing your purchase. Exclusive rates are often available to those using the scheme from banks and building societies. The smart three bedroom Mayne style home at Humberston Meadows is on the market from £174,950 – but with a Help to Buy Equity Loan, is available with a £8,748 deposit and just a £131,212 mortgage. Robert Orr, Sales Director at Westleigh, said: “If you’re ready to make your next move and trying to find a way to pay for it, the Help to Buy Equity Loan scheme could be the lifeline you need. “At Humberston Meadows we have a range of three and four bedroom designs, providing fantastic options for couples and growing families alike. “Only a few homes on the first phase of the development remain available, so if you’d like to explore the possibility

of making your move with a Help to Buy Equity Loan, now is as good a time as any. “Our friendly advisers are on hand at the Humberston Meadows marketing suite from 10:00 – 17:00 daily to talk you through the process.” For the latest updates on prices and availability at Humberston Meadows, visit www.westleigh.co.uk/

HELP TO BUY EQUITY LOANS It’s tough getting a foot on the property ladder so the Government has created the Help to Buy schemes including Help to Buy: Shared Ownership and Help to Buy: Equity Loan to help hard working people like you take steps to buy your own home. The Help to Buy ISA pays first time buyers a government bonus. For example, save £200 a month and they’ll add £50, up to a maximum of £3,000, boosting your ISA savings of £12,000 to £15,000. With a Help to Buy Equity Loan the Government lends you up to 20% of the cost of your newly built home, so you’ll only need a 5% cash deposit and a 75% mortgage to make up the rest. You won’t be charged loan fees on the 20% loan for the first five years of owning your home. Equity loans are available to first time buyers as well as homeowners looking to move. The home you want to buy must be newly built with a price tag of up to £600,000.

KNIT YOURSELF SOME HIGH FASHION

L

et’s be honest, when we think about hand knitted garments we tend to think about baby cardigans and ill fitting sweaters that we got from our aunties when we were kids. High fashion? Well we love it of course but we just don’t associate it with home knitting. If that’s the way you think then it’s probably time you took yourself down to a really good contemporary wool shop, like A Good Yarn of Cambridge Street, Cleethorpes for example. They’ve got an amazing selection of yarns and patterns that will amaze you, from pretty delicate pastels to bold and striking colours for making hygge influenced sweaters. The only limit is your imagination (and your skill level of course) but there are plenty of courses and workshops available so that once you’ve mastered the basics the sky’s the limit! So get yourself some needles and get clicking and you can be super chic in hand knits. What could be nicer?

Legendary Glasgow britpop band coming to the Auditorium in September

T

exas are one of the most successful British bands of the past thirty years. They formed in Glasgow in 1986 and since then they’ve released a string of hit albums and singles. They’ve sold 40 million albums, have had thirteen UK top ten singles, three UK number one albums and eight UK top ten albums. Their debut album Southside, released in 1989, reached number three in the UK and number 88 in the US and in 1997 White On Blonde became their biggest success to date, entering the UK Albums Chart at number one. To date it has been certified six times platinum. Follow up The Hush (1999) was also successful, topping the album charts again and certified triple platinum. The band's Greatest Hits album, released in 2000, was another big seller, again debuting at number one and also being certified six times platinum. Singer Sharleen Spiteri has enjoyed a successful solo career, releasing her debut solo album, Melody, in 2008.

The band’s ninth studio album, Jump On Board was released in May this year. Written and produced by Texas stalwarts Johnny McElhone and Spiteri herself, it’s the first new Texas studio album since 2013’s The Conversation and has been acclaimed as a pop classic. The new single is Work It Out, with a great video featuring Thierry Henry and there’s another video to watch out for, for Tell That Girl, which features Rory McCann (who plays the Hound on TV’s Game Of Thrones) on drums. Texas play Grimsby Auditorium on September 20th. For more information on the tour and on Texas go to their website at www.texas. uk.com. For tickets go to www. grimsbyauditorium.org.uk.

CLASSICS

C

lassic or contemporary? Which do you prefer. It’s a question that can cause as much division in a family as City or United or brown sauce or ketchup. Are you the kind of person who likes their home to be an understated study in pure white minimalism? Or do you prefer loads of detail, Victorian opulence, and complex patterns. Of course it's possible that what you really like is a bit of both. Then you should look at what designers call transitional style. Transitional Style (also known as "updated classic", "classic with a contemporary twist", "new takes on old classics") in interior design and furniture design refers to a contemporary blend of traditional and modern styles, midway between old world traditional and the world of chrome and glass contemporary; incorporating lines that are less ornate than

traditional designs, but not as severely basic as contemporary lines. As a result, transitional furniture designs are classic, timeless, and clean. Curves combine with straight lines in a transitional style interior to deliver a look that balances both masculine and feminine attributes for a comfortable and relaxing, uncomplicated design. A lack of ornamentation and decoration with minimal accessories keeps the focus on the simplicity and sophistication of the design. Colour palettes are typically neutral and subtle and may be monochromatic, with colour in art and accents, not upholstery and floors. Unlike contemporary furniture, transitional style focuses on comfort and practicality to meet the lifestyle of an active household. The scale of furniture pieces is ample but not overwhelming. Goose feather and down fill is typically used for upholstered furniture, wood species (maple, mahogany, walnut) and wood finishing is typically warm tones but can range from a natural finish to a high-gloss lacquer. Texture is important, and a multitude of fabric selections can vary from durable materials to sophisticated, plush fabrics, with tone-on-tone or small scale graphics. A balanced mix of several textures is often used. So the moral is - don’t limit yourself by clinging to one style or another. Use your creativity to find the perfect balance of the old and the new and you’ll come up with something that’s uniquely you and simply stylish. Happy times!

GARDENS

Make the most of grasses for year round colour and structure

F

rom dainty Blue Fescue to majestic Miscanthus, ornamental grasses provide texture, character and form for any garden and as they develop through the seasons their bright and colourful foliage is often joined by graceful swaying flower heads that last well into winter. In large borders grasses can be planted in bold groups or striking drifts, but many varieties perform well in large patio pots, positioned where their individual shape and arching form can be fully appreciated. Popular grasses for pots include compact Blue Fescue Grass and Slender Sweet Flag ‘Ogon’, or taller varieties of Miscanthus such as the Zebra Grass. From green to gold, purple to a host of patterned and variegated forms, ornamental grasses come in a wide range of colours, sizes and growing habits. As well as selecting grasses to suit your colour scheme always consider their other qualities, positioning grasses close to paths and seating areas so you can run your hands over their feathery foliage and flowers as you pass. Popular grasses for tactile displays in sensory gardens include the Feathertop Grass (Pennisetum) or annual grasses like Bunny Tails. Taller grasses also add movement to otherwise static displays, catching a summer breeze to add interest and catch the eye. Growing to around two metres in height, the bold form of Golden Oats (Stipa gigantea) is a real showstopper! Or if space allows, try planting a statuesque clump of Pampas Grass, and enjoy their feathery plumes right into winter. Ornamental grasses offer great value and tproduce longlasting displays in any garden. Large individuals have a

real presence, taking pride of place in beds and borders, while colourful planting combinations can be created with flowering perennials like Black Eyed Susan, Coneflowers and Ice Plants. Some large potted grasses can be divided into two or three pieces at planting time, each with roots and shoots attached. Grasses grow well in patio pots, but make sure tall varieties are planted in large, heavy pots to prevent them blowing over in strong winds. Line terracotta pots with plastic from old compost bags to help conserve moisture. The tops of some perennial, like miscanthus, die over winter. Promptly cut away all old growth to avoid damaging new shoots that start emerging in early spring.

GAS SAFETY WEEK

national gas safety week 2017

28

Gas Safety Week is an annual event that aims to raise awareness of gas safety and the importance of taking care of your gas appliances. It’s co-ordinated by the Gas Safe Register, the official list of gas engineers who are legally allowed to work on gas.

GAS SAFETY MATTERS!

Badly fitted and poorly serviced gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning. Every year thousands of people across the UK are diagnosed with carbon monoxide poisoning. It is a highly poisonous gas. You can’t see it, taste it or smell it, but it can kill quickly with no warning. You can protect yourself from the dangers by following these simple steps: • Trust the Triangle - only use a Gas Safe registered engineer to fit, fix or service your appliances • Get your gas appliances regularly serviced and safety checked every year • All Gas Safe registered engineers carry a Gas Safe Register ID card. Before any gas work is carried out always

check the card and make sure the engineer is qualified for the work you need doing • Fit an audible carbon monoxide alarm • Know the six main signs and symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning – headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapse and loss of consciousness. • Check for warning signs such as lazy yellow flames or black marks and stains around the appliance.

Does your home meet the standard?

Putting gas safety at the heart of your home

So how much will a sweep cost? That’s one of those how long is a piece of string questions but prices start from about £35 to 40 for an open fire. If you need to have the integrity of your chimney seal tested, or any remedial work done, then your sweep will quote you a price.

Chimney maintenance: High standards required!

D

id you know that people with a flame effect gas fire in regular use should have their chimney swept once or twice a year? No nor did we but even with gas fires an unswept flue can sometimes create hazardous levels of carbon monoxide. Your chimney is the exhaust pipe for your home, getting rid of the toxic by products of combustion and it needs to be clear of blockages and obstructions. Soot build up, birds nests and debris from damaged brickwork can all stop your chimney from working properly and cause dangerous gases to leak back into your home. They also increase the risk of chimney fires and long term smoke damage to your furniture and to the fabric of your home. So how often should a chimney be swept? Usually once a year for light use and twice a year for fireplaces in regular use. A professional sweep will be able to advise you more exactly because some fuels, particularly wood and coal, burn dirtier than others.

How can we go about finding a reliable chimney sweep? That’s an easier question. There are two trades associations for the industry, The Guild Of Master Chimney Sweeps and The National Association Of Chimney Sweeps, and you can make a start by going to the websites of one or the other or both, and searching for their members in your area. In a spirit of fairness you’ll find one sweep from each organisation on the page opposite and we’d suggest that having a word with them would be a good place to start.

So there you go. Chimney sweeping - more important than you realise, cheaper than you think and if you give one of our sweeps a ring you can be Doesn’t it take ages and make a assured of first class service horrible mess? and minimal mess. LET’S HEAR IT FOR SMEs

f you watch the business news on telly you could be forgiven for thinking that it's only the big companies and mega corporations that make the world go round but in fact it's small and medium sized enterprises - SMEs - that really drive the economy. In the UK a company is defined as an SME if it meets two out of three criteria: it has a turnover of less than £25m, it has fewer than 250 employees or it has gross assets of less than £12.5m. The Department for Business Innovation and Skills estimates that 99.3% of UK private sector businesses are SMEs, with an annual turnover of £1.6 trillion 47% of UK total. Collectively they are sometimes referred to as the Mittelstand and in order to support these vital businesses the government has a target of 25% of government’s spending going to SMEs. What this means to us is that most of us will have jobs and livelihoods directly related to the success of SMEs and we ought to offer them our support whenever possible, so on the following pages we're glad to suggest a few of out local favourites. Which firms would you add to the list?

Two thirds of UK businesses are family owned - three million in total. They generate over a quarter of UK GDP and employ around nine and a half million people. Experts agree that senior citizens living alone should be involved in their own care as much as possible because it fosters a sense of purpose, facilitating a sense of accomplishment and agency. o matter how committed you are to the needs of the person you’re caring for, you also need to make time for yourself. At The Grove Care Home we fully understand how difficult caring for a loved one can be for families; it can be a full time job in itself on top of other work and family pressures that can leave carers exhausted. The summer holidays can be a particularly difficult time with additional pressures of childcare, whether you’re a parent or grandparent, you can end up looking after all the generations. Taking a break for yourself seems impossible! However, making time for yourself or younger members of your family is important too, a period of respite care for your relative could be just what your family needs. Respite care is a short term stay in a care home where a dedicated team of highly experienced carers will ensure your loved one receives the help and support they need, giving you peace of mind whilst you take a short break. It can also be a great opportunity to meet other residents, make friends and take part in activities that they may not have the opportunity to do at home. Respite care gives an insight into what life might be like should a loved one need to move to a care home full-time and help them to make the right choice for their new home later on. At The Grove Care Home we are currently offering a 14 night respite care break for the price of 10, saving up to £370 on the usual price until 30th September. Terms and conditions apply so please speak to Home Manager Amanda Griffiths for full details. Call 01472 821 127 or email info@countrycourtcare.com.

Each estate’s product has its own unique flavour spectrum and it’s reassuringly expensive. Not arm and a leg second mortgage expensive but expensive enough that you know you’re buying something special. This isn’t lunchbox chocolate, this is artisan chocolate, for treating someone special. Or for treating yourself. Duffy’s call themselves ‘bean to bar’ producers which means that they take delivery of raw beans and process everything in house until the finished product is complete. No shortcuts, no substitutes. The process starts with the roasting, shelling and sorting of the cocoa beans. Then they’re placed in large stainless steel vats where they are ground by rotating granite rollers. As the cocoa butter is released so the ground beans liquify. On the second day organic cane sugar is added and some cocoa butter for texture. At the end of the process a little sunflower lecithin is added to prevent the formation of bubbles. That’s all there is to it. It takes between two and three days to completely turn to chocolate and for all the complex flavours to come through and each batch of 30kg of beans produces only 300 bars of completed product. Of course they could buy machines to do a lot of the work and increase production massively but you just know from being here that that isn’t the point. The liquid chocolate is tempered on a granite slab and poured into moulds, cooled and then wrapped by hand ready to go out to specialist shops and enthusiasts all over the world. (If we’ve whetted your appetite for knowing more then there’s some fascinating background information and an excellent video on the Duffy’s website at www.duffyschocolate.co.uk.) And of course it tastes fantastic and it’s in high demand from chocolate enthusiasts all over the world. The factory only produces about 25,000 bars a year however so it doesn’t hang around. It’s available by mail order and via the Duffy’s website as well as from a select few retailers, including not only Deli-Licious in St Peter’s Avenue and Fortnum & Mason’s in Piccadilly but chocolate specialists all round the world. They have been awarded gold medals twice by the Academy of Chocolate. We’re visiting the factory on the occasion of its open day, celebrating the businesses extension into the unit next door, in which Lindsay Gardner of Louth’s very own Spire Chocolates will be making her famous chocolate products including boxes of chocolates, chocolate bark, polar bears and alpacas. It’s an ideal tie up - superb Lincolnshire chocolate and delicious Lincolnshire chocolates made on the same premises. They’ll be offering courses and experience days as well and if you’re a chocolate aficionado then a visit to Duffy’s, for a chocolate making and tasting session is something you won't want to miss. And then there’s the smell. Did I mention the smell?
