A Warm Welcome

We are excited to present a first issue of our newsletter. We are going to communicate here news and updates and other significant information related to the DITE project.

Today you can read about the premise of the DITE project as well as have a sneak peek of our Report on the status quo of internationalisation of teacher education. Have a good read!

DITE - Diverse Internationalisation of Teacher Education

WHAT?

Teacher Education in universities has remained one of the least internationalised subjects in higher education Yet, teachers are expected to educate future generations to become global citizens

WHY?

HOW?

DITE focuses on the element of internationalisation to increase capabilities of future teachers by sensitising TE students to international perspectives. DITE relies on internationalisation at home to develop a model of globalised teacher education through diverse internationalisation with a focus on students becoming teachers in upper secondary education

We have gathered information about internationalisation of teacher education in our universities It is a basis for the report and series of trainings for the teacher educators and for the students We are going to present a model and guidelines for implementing DITE in other insitutions Our DITE network will build on dissemination efforts.

Report on internationalisation of teacher education

What is a diverse internationalisation of teacher education?

What is internationalisation of teacher education at all?

We have prepared a report that aims at answering that questions. That it is the first step towards discovering and designing a universal model and guidelines for implementing international components into education of the future teachers.

Our report consists of 3 sections:

review of the literature on internationalisation of teacher education with a special focus on internationalisation at home; description of the national systems of teacher education in Poland, Portugal, and Spain that are very often mentioned as a main barrier to internationalisation;

our research that was carried out at four universities depicting the current state of internationalisation teacher education at each of the institutions

and it shows a truly diverse landscape of concepts, conditions and people who navigate in this complex environment

The most common first reaction of the respondents to a question about the definition of internationalisation of teacher education was mobility. But when we go deeper, the attitude changes and internationalisation at home comes up Even if this term is not used specifically, we can see that respondents intrinsically feel that IaH is the solution.

C o o p e r a t i o n p a r t n e r s h i p s i n h i g h e r e d u c a t i o n 2 0 2 11P L 0 1K A 2 2 0H E D0 0 0 0 3 1 1 2 9 newsletter

Internationalisation of teacher educ generally has positive connotations. The only negative aspect mentioned risk of indoctrination. This is interestin the context of de-Westernisa mentioned in the literature review proves that people involved in tea education are aware of potential risks understand the responsibilities education carries

Internationalisation is described often in the context of cooperation and that is why they share some characteristics Apart from abstract qualities such us cultural sharing, inclusion and respect for diversity or freedom, personal and professional development is mentioned as well Our respondents understand that those values although very often spoken of, are hard to adhere to and require an effort

The most prominent indicated issue is a rigid national system of teacher education Each university is required to educate future teachers according to specific requirements that are set out in the national legislation Students are prepared to become teachers in their home country and teach in their mother tongue.

A next concern very much connected to the education system is the labour market. Since countries operate within their national systems, students who take up teacher education plan their professional career in their home countries only. They know that their credentials are not transferable and they see little encouragement to engage in international undertakings.

Despite all that, all respondents listed quite a lot of methods and elements that they experience while teaching and studying TE Teacher educators underlined that those initiatives are usually bottom-up ideas and that a lot depends on drive and persistence of the individuals.

This is why institutional support is indicated as one of the most important enablers of internationalisation of teacher education Institutional plan for internationalisation and a specific study programme will help to inform and engage students and teacher educators.

The full report on the status quo of internationalisation of teacher education will be available in February 2023

Spring has come ...

... to Jasne Błonia, a city park where Institute of Pedagogy of the University of Szczecin is located.

DITE activities are budding like fresh green leaves. But we didn't snooze during the winter time. We have been quite busy with online sessions of the DITE training and then in March we met all together in Tarragona (URV) for the final on-site training.

We are ready to speak about the outcomes during the DITE conference in June 2023.

TRAIN - the - TRAINER module

DITE TTT module started on 24 January 2023 with four online sessions. We completed the task on 15 - 17 March 2023 at Rovira i Virgili University in Tarragona where the final 3-day-long training took place.

We have selected over 20 participants from 4 universities that are academic teachers who on a daily basis teach students of TE. The participants were required to have a good command of English, be ready to go on with DITE activities and prepare in-house trainings for students at their local universities.

The DITE TTT modules were led by specialists from the University of Szczecin, Adam Mickiewicz University, Rovira i Virgili University and Global Impact Institute We call them our master trainers

The online modules were focused on different aspects of internationalisation:

Internationalisation of Teacher Education

Intercultural communication

Intercultural classroom management

Internationalisation of teaching and learning

Inclusive internationalisation

The onsite part of the training was mainly dedicated to hands-on experience. Our participants learnt and discussed different ways and strategies that may be later used during the in-house trainings for TE students.

All information; theoretical background and practical activities are being gathered now by our master trainers. Very soon we will make our DITE manual available to public.

The TTT partcipants are now working within their universities in order to prepare for in-house trainings for the students of TE. Since organization of teacher education is different in each university, the in-house trainings will have various forms but will be meet the following critieria:

it is organised in the local language;

at least 15 students of TE will partcipate in every HEI; training last between 8 and 10 hours;

on-site format of the training; training sessions are completed by the end of December 2023 on-line focus group of the participating students takes place in January 2024

Each of the local in-house training will be sumed up by the DITE inhouse manual - a local version of the DITE manual that is focused more on the country-specific aspects and is written in a local language.

The DITE in-house trainings

The purpose of the DITE in-house course is to empower future secondary education teachers and give them knowledge and tools that will make them become ambassadors of internationalisation and agents of social change in their environments

The in-house trainings are delivered by the academic teachers who took part in the trainthe-trainer sessions

Each University structures their course into various sessions depending on whether they are delivered online or in a classroom and depending on the local context and circumstances.

To maintain the nature of the training, every session should include interactive activities, building up to a final student project or presentation.

This presentation or student project, delivered by all participants at the end of the course, will be a way for students to commit to including internationalisation and the intercultural component into their future teaching at secondary schools.

The actual timetable of the course can be moulded around each institution. But a typical distribution of the sessions could be as follows:

Session 1: Introduction of objectives + presentations of participants & ice-breaking activity

Sessions 2: What is internationalisation and what are its global trends (present and future)?

Session 3: What is intercultural communication?

Session 4: What is inclusive internationalisation?

Session 5: Internationalisation of teaching and learning

Session 6: Presentation by participants on their future vision to implement international and intercultural components into their future teaching.

The DITE in-house trainings will be delivered between October 2023 and February 2024 at all partner Universities, They will be followed by the focus group that will provide feedback necessary for creating guidelines and general model of the training.
